Last December 9th, when temps in the upper midwest were in the negative teens (or worse), when the winds were howling along at hurricane strength in some places, when the snowfall was being measured in feet, and when all of Iowa and large parts of Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan were under a blizzard warning, Chuck Todd was not impressed.
Attaturk had a rather pointed reply: You can go to hell, Chuck Todd.
Fast forward eight weeks . . .
I think Chuck may be arriving at that destination, Attaturk. He’s a Miami native, after all, and something tells me that the “not news” event like the one DC is having right now is a Miami native’s worst nightmare.
From the Washington Post’s update page on the storm:
The pounding continues; No more Dulles flights
10:17 a.m. ROUNDUP: Dulles airport joins Reagan National in ending flight operations. We’re still facing about 8 more hours of accumulating snow, with some especially heavy bands this morning. Power outages are widespread and growing, with heavy snow weighing on power lines and winds kicking up. Latest reports have more than 210,000 without power in the region. . . .
There were white-out conditions everywhere. Cameras showed I-270 south of Clarksburg was invisible in the snow, a condition prevalent throughout the region.
9:50 a.m. — Bethesda streets lose power . . .
9:30 a.m. — Hangar roof at Dulles collapses . . .
8:45 a.m. — Postal Service surrenders . . .
8:33 — The Smithsonian is closed.
That almost never happens. . . .
Blizzards are news where ever they happen. Events are canceled and businesses closed. Emergency services are desperately needed, but hard to deliver or reach. People with homes are stuck in them, and people without homes die.
Chuck, the next time you pop off about “not news” events, I hope you remember all the “not news” you’re getting today.
[UPDATE: Chuck waves the white flag.]

About Firedoglake
Chuck Todd is an idiot.
Silly Peterr. It’s only “news” when MOTUs experience it.
Yesterday high of 60 degrees in February in Seattle while the rest of the country freezes my Neighbors are saying new plants are blooming out of the ground, buds on trees forming. This is not normal for Seattle I’m not sure it has ever happened in February.
Global Warming says we on average get warmer however more heat is means more energy or wind.
More wind from the north seems to be freezing the east coast, midwest etc taking cold further than it normally does.
However is this world wide a cold winter like the 70′s was or is the cold localized? I’m stating for seattle at least this is very warm.
And That might be the real story.
The entire NBC Washington bureau is an excellent example of the Peter principle in action.
But not the Peterr principle.
Now don’t hold back – let us know how you really feel.
(for the record, I don’t think Chuck Todd would know a legitimate news story if it walked up to him in the middle of the street)
Ahem.
Maybe you could find another phrase to describe that?
;)
I tried to make the distinction at 5.
I’m hanging out until the panel on the wars on cspan2 ends.
Well, there are the Peter Parkinson Principles, offering evidence that people can be promoted well beyond their level of incompetence, which might be more applicable in the case of NBC News.
Chuckie’s latest tweet
Actually more like the Dilbert Principle
Think of Venus heavy atmosphere green house gasses huge differences in temperture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus
My bold Our future won’t get this bad but Venus is an example of what too much Carbon Dioxide (a green house gas ) can do notice Venus is hotter than Mercury even though Mercury is closer to the sun its also as you may note very cold on Venus.
Thanks, that is the one I actually had in mind but my brain apparently didn’t get out of bed this morning.
I appreciate it.
you know full well that Chuck Todd was pushing little old ladies out of the way at the supermarket yesterday in his panicked frenzy to stock up on supplies.
I’m thinking Chuck’s NBC Masters don’t want people to focus on the weather otherwise they might start asking in Florida why Seattle is so warm and then its only a few steps to start thinking about the green house effect and the temperature Venus a Global Warming planet if there ever was one.
Because normally bad weather is a story.
We know Chuck is capable of prodigious shoveling although this might be the first time it has involved moving snow.
I’m really OK with Chuck Todd and the rest of cable not reporting on this. Not only are DC Metro denizens held hostage in our homes by the snowstorm, but we are also held hostage by ALL local stations reporting on the snowstorm inside our homes. All we are seeing and hearing about is SNOW, SNOW, and more SNOW. It’s like that scene from National Lampoon’s European Vacation where the kids are in the hotel room in London: “What do you want to watch? Cheese or snow?” Except we don’t even get the cheese option. Thank GOD for cable.
lol
your brain is getting in gear
Poor Chuck he doesn’t think snow is a story until it happens to him. No power means pipes freeze even with power pipes creak as they freeze if Chuck listened to snow stories he would know to run water from the sink until his power goes out or the weather changes running water doesn’t freeze as fast.
Going out and running your car for a half hour two or three times a day might be a good idea why because I bet Chuck never had his car winterized and his engine coolant adjusted. Engine blocks crack in cold weather as the water freezes engine blocks are expensive.
Also Chuck do you have any idea how many people have heart attacks shoveling snow every year?
I just read that the best of the DC weather persons, Bob Ryan @ WRC, is being hired away to the ABC station. One contributing factor: they won’t put Ryan’s local weather stuff up on the WRC web page, but force the page to host stuff from the network “parent” in NYC, which is . . . wait for it . . . NBC.
Yeah,I bet he went through the express lane with more than 10 items.Such a DWEEB!
As the financial crisis worsened toward the end of 2008, chief executive Jeffrey Immelt and other leaders at General Electric repeatedly assured the public there was no need to worry about the company’s ability to access credit markets and refinance its massive debts as they came due.
But in private conversations that alarmed then-Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr., Immelt laid out a different picture of GE’s credit situation, according to Paulson’s new book about the crisis.
Instead, Paulson writes, Immelt on at least four occasions expressed worries about GE’s short-term debt, known as commercial paper, and eventually lobbied for access to special government guarantees for such debt.

OT Former CEO Jack Welch’s reputation as a business genius is about to go up in smoke. Obama’s call for more Nuclear Reactors in light of this news looks like a stealth government bailout of General Electric (they make Nuclear Reactors).
Nobody’s books seem to have real numbers investors can trust.
Dam TCU my Strawberries plants are already showing fruit??? In February dam it is early even for down here in the bay area.
By his same logic, when Chuck Todd tweets like a douchebag, it’s not news.
Well that fucker should have been impressed, because that same storm brought 15″ or so of snow to the DC area.
With the storm we had last weekend, plus the current BLIZZARD, this season’s area snowfall will exceed 40″ — greater than Boston.
I’m snowed in in No. VA, and it’s still snowing. Not scheduled to end ’til late tonight, and they keep revising re strengthening snow. Headline you hate to see:
There’s about 20″ – 24″ currently on the ground. When I shoveled a portion of the walk this morning, the snow was above my knees.
More updates from the Post (see link in the main text above):
Chuck, you might want to give it a try. Here’s a hint for folks not accustomed to dealing with “not news”: it’s generally much easier to shovel off twelve inches of “not news” twice than twenty-four inches of “not news” once.
On the other hand, sometimes the neighbors lend a hand, even when they didn’t mean to. Again from the Post:
You know you’re having a bad day when you dig out the wrong mound of “not news”.
Good God! The Smithsonian has closed! What’s a Todd to do? Must tweet!
Nahant unequal heat distribution I think is the real story strawberries in February while Florida freezes should make people wonder about Global Warming.
Also this news would help California home prices. Right now weather patterns are in flux but what if this year becomes the trend? If we lose Florida’s winter crops California might have to increase food production.
Irrigation and desalinization then become the new building projects for California.
Yep to that. You wind up spending roughly the same amount of time total in doing so and you get to spread the pain a bit.
News flash: Economist discovers ‘not news’ can be shoveled! Alert the media! Sorry I just can’t take this seriously as I live in the Midwest.
As someone near Seattle, let’s keep our Winter good fotrune to ourselves, at least not broadcast to Floridians. We do not really want them invading our very blue state.
People from FL bring chads w/them. It’s worse than snow.
But With Arrnold and the minority Pukes in charge nothing will get done… The Rich might have to pay more taxes, OMG not that, the Rich here have it made, I pay more in taxes than most of them do and I only get SS.
Xargaw many of the Retirees in Florida are from Blue States, they are ok. But do you really think the GOPers want to live on the Godless West Coast they would worry about being corrupted by organic food, pot clubs, bike trails and Vegans.
I say we corrupt them if they come here:)
Ya mean you don’t want any of our obstructionist Puke to move in next to you?? You are showing your bigotry xargaw……/s
You forgot they are also Liberuls
My brother in-law(he is devoted to Darth & Beck) won’t visit the West Coast just because of the Liberuls & where are they spending the Winter… Yup in the heart of Puke land the Texas coast… I really feel bad for my sister having to put up with him…
Nahant any chance of getting a Real Dem as Governor now? Any chance California will raise taxes or will they default on their debt?
Greece, Ireland etc are in the news people are worried they might default on their debt I’m thinking California is closer to home, our financial markets and a bigger economy.
But the Media can’t talk about that story because then it would look like they were pressuring a Republican to raise taxes.
This is a lot like down playing snow stories nationally because when you talk about national weather you have to mention our freakishly warm west coast weather.
I think Jerry Brown can win over any of the Pukes down here… Especially Poizner.. he is a jerk, I once threw him off my property when he was just getting started trying to unseat Eshoo(even though she lost my vote for her Cancer Drug patent extensions.. more patients will die because of this amendment). I told him straight to his face I could never ever vote for a puke… I asked him to cite one thing the Pukes have ever done for the middle class except to rip them off.. As for the other two Puke candidates Carly really blew it with her sheep ad…
Maybe tell your brother in Law that our warm weather and his cold weather is a sign from God that God is displeased with the Red States!
Yes I just talked to God the West Coast is being rewarded.
“That which you do onto the least of my brothers is that which you do onto me” JC
That lawyer who fell asleep in the Texas Death Penalty case, Bush Laughing and Joking about executing that woman, Gov Goodhair canceling that report that showed he flipped the switch on an innocent man.
Texas must repent Repent I say or face the Lake of Fire!
Ignoring your brother in need is the same as causing the need in the Eyes of God its a crime!
Who says the Left can’t have fire breathing Preachers lecturing the Right for their Godless ways:)
I’d like Hollywood to do a film about John Brown.
You better hold off on that until after the next round of fires.
Fine:)
Looks like Chuck and the rest of the WH Press Corps are learning about the dangers of “not news” in a very up-close-and-personal way:
but but the fire area is where most of the Pukes live here in California… I say let em burn in the Lake of Fire (is that located somewhere within Fire Dog Lake) for their SINS!!
[modnote: Even if rhetorical, let's not go further down this path. thank you.]
God has a wicked sense of humor, doesn’t she?
There was a whole lot of not news between Louisville and Indianapolis, made the drive north verrrry interesting.
By Grabthar’s Hammer!!!!!
(sorry everyone else)
Does he know to keep at least a half tank of gas in his car so his fuel line doesn’t freeze?
My son just went over and shoveled out our 80+ year old neighbor’s front steps. We’re on a Yellow Snow Emergency. LOL. Red means no driving unless you’re emergency responders, yellow means caution.
I hope She spares the neighbor’s pine tree which is leaning very much in the direction of our roof. It’s a heavy wet snow.
Isn’t that the most hysterical and frighteningly crazy thing you have ever seen?
If anyone held a sliver of a belief that Carly was in any way competent, that should blow it away.
Gawd! This state is heading for doom
On the one hand, Carly single-handedly tried to drive HP off a cliff … and almost succeeded; and eMeg is just as batty. And on the other, former Gov Moonbeam is trying to find his inner wingnut
No wonder DiFi is making noises like she wants to run again
Game, set and match to Peterr!
With the extreme weather striking Red States harder than Blue States and even hitting skeptical reporters’ SUVs and causing Chuck Todd to heel, I’d say karma was at work.
