David Dayen already wrote this morning about how Sen. Richard Shelby’s attempt to block 70 Obama administration nominees over a couple of earmarks “does amount to what you would call a ‘teachable moment’ about the dysfunctional Senate.”
In his initial reaction overnight, Josh Marshall went a bit further, noting that Shelby’s hostage-taking attempt showed “gallons more audacity than Obama ever could have hoped for”:
… I wonder if this story might not end up amounting to much more than the sum of its parts because it brings together three or four of the issues roiling American politics today in a bundle of smack-you-in-the-face arrogance that’s too much to ignore.
For Republicans and the Tea Party set you’ve got pork-barrel spending and earmarks… for Democrats, there’s the outrage at archaic Senate obstructionism.
Perhaps more important, it crystallizes the essential pettiness and hubris of the Republican in such a vivid way that even Democrats should be able to sell the image of GOP selfishness to a generally inattentive public.
It’s happened before, back in 1995 when Newt Gingrich led the newly Republican-controlled Congress in forcing a shutdown of the federal government, trying to force President Clinton to capitulate on budget issues. Thanks to an inopportune remark by Gingrich about a personal snub he had received from Clinton, the White House successfully embarrassed the GOP into ending the standoff.
That Shelby would try such a stunt barely a couple of weeks after the Republicans snagged their coveted 41st Senate seat shows that his party hasn’t outgrown Gingrich’s penchant for overreach. But, as D-Day also wrote today, President Obama and the Democratic leadership can’t let themselves be even less willing to stand up for their own interests than the famed triangulator, Clinton.
Perhaps Obama should make a high-profile visit to various GOP senators’ home states, asking locals if they’re as fond of Shelby’s earmarks as Massachusetts voters were of Ben Nelson’s “Cornhusker kickback.” Or maybe there’s a better attention-getting maneuver.
But hell, they need to do something. Don’t let this teachable moment pass.

Conservatives Hope Larry Kudlow Will Take On Schumer In NY
…oh pretty please yes
That would be an interstinng thing to watch – Kudrow will land in a mudhole.
All Richard Shelby wants is some respect.
Just think of how the White House has dissed other Republican senators over the last year:
Charles Grassley, Mike Enzi, Olympia Snowe.
Shelby is simply asking that Obama stop kowtowing to the radical left
and start paying atention to Real Americans.
Like Airbus.
Thanks for this Swopa.
I keep saying this over and over: We reeled in Newt when we were able to demonstrate the extent of his obstruction.
Let’s hope the Democrats do get that.
Name the last one that the Ds took advantage of.
Hell, the last one they “recognized” …
I’m hoping that Schumer becomes the new majority leader (assuming the Ds still have one in the senate after Nov) because the rule is that D majority leaders in the senate lose their seats in the next election. I hate Schumer, a Wall St, Israel whore (with apologies to whores who earn their livings more honestly).
Dumbocrats.
Really! Maybe, Obama should just let the Gopers take over now and save us all the angst of watching him cave to these assholes over and over again. He’s either getting really bad political advice daily or he’s so deep in the bubble now he has no idea of what he really looks like lately?
The path of least resistence would just be for O to switch parties.
*sigh* Ain’t that the truth…! 8-(
It might even be the honest thing to do.
Then, he could sell “bipartisanship” the other way, and maybe point out the need for a third party ….
Multi-Dimensional, B-plus kindda guy that he is …
DW
Swopa and David are right, the Democrats couldn’t ask for a better example of GOP worthlessness: petty, earmarxist obstruction of national security hires in departments responsible for Americans’ safety.
But if Obama couldn’t make it work for his TSA nominee, and decided to make GSA the example instead, doesn’t that show the Democrats still believe the GOP lies about Democrats being soft on defense and terror?
Time for Obama to slam Shelby hard. He deserves it, and he’s very exposed.
Might?
I love Ed’s question du jour…
“Do you think the Dems have shown enough guts this year…?”
Yes or No…? Hrmmm… Let me see some, nay, any sort of intestinal fortitude, period…!
Heya! CTut.
How is Paradise?
I’ve got fourteen inches of snow on the way …
But, as you know, I can really shovel it.
So, I’m prepared.
DW
Just sent him an email. Subject line said: Switch parties. Body of email said: please.
Aloha, It’s actually dark and gloomy today, but, at a comfortable 70 degrees…! ;-)
Yeah “might”…
Kindda like the meaning of “is”. (From the Clinton daze)
Situational. (Given to subtle, or not so nuanced … calculation)
(Wink!Wink! — Nod … Nod …)
DW
I hope FDL gives awards for illustrations….the above Newt gets a very big star….of course, that’s fitting.
I think “pretty” please is appropriate to a President.
Don’t you?
I mean, give him his due … he’s still foolin’ a lot of the people.
Give him another year and send the letter again.
Maybe ya better say “pretty please with sugar on it”, or something more saccharine, he likes sweet-talk ya know.
;~DW
This is some serious BS…
Personally, I find the “The GOP sucks more than we do” message to be less than compelling, but it’s one of the few the Democrats have at the moment. It also might increase public pressure on Senate Republicans to not obstruct what few positive things the Democrats actually are trying to do, like run a government.
One can hope anyway.
Clinton daze. I resemble that. How naive. However, I did have the sense to wonder what the consequences of eliminating Glass-Steagall would be. And not favorably.
Oh shit. I should have checked it with you before sending. Next time. I could have been so much more snarky.
When I administered networks, keeping information like this around was one of the last things I wanted to do. There are so many privacy concerns, including a few written into federal law, that back then no sensible person would do it.
How times have changed.
707
Seventy degrees.
Have you any idea how long it has been since there have even been rumors of such a sweltering heat wave? Have you.
Okay, so ya don’t have to shovel snow.
‘Course volcanoes ain’t a particular problem hereabouts …
Still, I just dun know …
Y’all is closer to heaven, there ain’t no doubts.
DW
from the article…
With a real Democratic president, one year into his term, the Republican Party could have been politically interred for the next 40 years because of the damage they and their ideology inflicted on the republic.
Instead, the Republicans have been blessed with a president with a Rodney King philosophy of “Why can’t we all get along?” and an Mahatma Ghandi-like love of his enemy.
Obama’s ego allows him to think he can win friends and influence enemies by being Christ like. We all know where Jesus ended up. Obama surely thinks he is smarter and more skillful than that.
Another good one, eCAHN!
I wuz bein’ serious (well, as much as I am able).
Frankly I imagine SNARK would be wasted on Barack.
He seems so earnest, ya know.
I hope you will find these thoughts of some small value when next you send missives to our one and only President.
term
Hmm, the word “term” fell right out of some sentence …
Must have been thinking about terminology, or sumthing ….?
;~DW
I think it’s more like: “instead the Republicans have been blessed with a ‘stealth’ Republican President.”
Seriously, what has BHO done, ever, to really stick his neck out for Dems (as in, we the voters)?? What? Can you think of anything?
All I see BHO doing is talking about being bipartisan and working with his “friends,” who all seem to be mostly Republican, or, failing that, Blue Dog Dems (aka, same thing).
Rahm calls the left “retarded.”
So, uh, what conclusions should I draw from that? BHO’s just not that into “real” Democrats, and he’s especially not into progessives. Period.
But we’ve discussed this ad nauseum here. To be redundant, we only have a one party system, and it’s for the sole benefit of the corporations and the Oligarchs. Your vote is pretty worthless, and BHO don’t care about you.
Well, maybe we should send Obama birthday cards for Xmas?
He’d prolly think we were just confused, Shadow. He already does. So it wouldn’t be a great leap for an intellectual acrobat and true fabulist like Obama.
And Rahm and Cass could help him figure it out, maybe.
:~b
Robbed.
Blankfein’s bonus is only $9 million.
And do you know how little is left after taxes?
Oh, I believe that! /s
I feel so for Blankfein.
One of Obama’s chief mentors who is not Joe Lieberman is Cass Sunstein. Sunstein authored a book entitled “Nudge”.
Obama thinks that just a little more nudging to get half a loaf will nudge a few lockstep Republicans to go his way for that half a loaf. Politics being the art of the possible.
Don’t go for the brass ring when you might still be able to get “half a loaf”. More like half a turd.
At least when the Republicans clean our clocks in the mid-terms we can say I told you so.
Too bad about the reality of the terribleness of bad policy like the health care ponzi scheme, mountaintop removal, lack of climate change legislation, home mortgage crisis – no cramdowns, and the guarantee that the derrivatives market ponzi scheme will cause another crash and bailout for too big to fail banksters.
Nudge. We need more nudge.
*heh* I’m just citing ‘em…! ;-)
Yeah, that is SO demeaning.
He should just give it back and tell ‘em where to stick it.
That’s what someone really doing Gawd’s work would do.
DW
I know a few places I’d like to “nudge” them.
I know. No intention to punish the messinger.
Clearly, this guy hackworth knows nothing about the awesome power of “Nudge”. He should buy my book.
- Cass Sunstein
I go out to Google every couple of hours and type into the search line:
“the NSA are a bunch of nosy jerks”
I don’t know if it will show up in any of their snooper-scopes, but I can always hope.
Someone doing God’s work would donate that to charity. Which would also eliminate the income tax problem.
Now we’re hanging on the edge of our seats to see how much Jamie Dimon gets.
Careful. You can be banned for sock puppeting. *g*
Let us know when they show up at your door. If you can keep the SWAT team out long enough to type a comment, that is.
Ah yes, Cass Sunstein and the nudgie pumpers.
(You can also say; “Rubber baby buggy bumpers”, real fast, ten times, and the “OFFICIAL (and only) US HISTORY” by Cass Sunstein will magically appear before your eyes and you will understand EVERYTHING since forever.)
Your observation about Obama being a Kenyan Candidate (by way of Manchuria) was something I was “debating” whether to place at the end of the post. But I wanted a simple message for the ages – sort of Christ-like myself, dontcha know.
But, really, our governing system is like a two-flavor soft-serve custard machine. You can order vanilla, or you can order chocolate, but regardless, you will still get the same corporate sticky cream on your face.
Luv it when you talk dirty.
The problem with the Obama administration is they don’t have any attack dogs to go after the Repubs when they step on it and the media sure isn’t going to do their job. What this administration needs to do is grow some cajones and start fighting back. They need to keep this story in the news, not just comment on it and let it go. Whatever happened to when you do something wrong I am going to call you out on it.
A Capitol-Capital Idea. A Christmas Birthday card to President Obama. I WILL do it, and I will keep an eye out for a card that strikes the exact, precise intonation of Saviorhood resident in the White House 2009-2011.
It’s a story of Biblical mettle already. Savior Obama leads the Republicans out a possible 40 years of bondage.
That is gospel, Shadow.
I am awaiting the burning bu$h …
(Moving Backwards, ever backwards … to Olde Testament tyme)
:~D
I figure if the bush is burning, it was either very good, or very bad, but too late for me in either case.
You, Shadow, are simply ahead of your times.
All of them.
That is why you know …
;~DW
A Strange Shadow in a Strange Place, at a Strange Time. That pretty much sums it up. Thanks for the On-Star orientatation. I needed it. ;-)
Yeah. Obama is such a coward I can’t see him hammering Shelby on this.
Wouldn’t be “bi-partisan,” don’t ya know.
Really too bad, because it’s a perfect opportunity, and all Democrats have to do is tell the truth and let the American public make up its mind.
BTW, Nelson’s health care/Medicaid blackmail has apparently really tanked him in NE — despite the $500,000 worth of “what a great guy he is” ads paid for by the DNC.
The Dems could do the same to Shelby, if only they had the courage to do so.
Let’s see, Daschle, then Reid. What a bunch of winners.
Yep, let’s add Schumer to that group — although there are so many Dems I’d love to kiss good-bye to as well.
Weenie. We’re looking at 24″ -30,” and they’ve just issued a blizzard warning.
[I'm in DC caring for friends' house full of rescue dogs -- while they're in Hawaii.]
I dunno. He responds pretty well to the “fuck you” he’s always getting from the Republicans: keeps going back to try to “win them over.”
Well I hope you have your camera, dogs and a couple feet of snow always makes good pictures.
Weren’t they touting Rahm as the “attack dog”?
Yeah, I went to Micro Center last week and got the cheapest of the small video cameras, to take videos of my dogs at home to send to my kids on the Mainland.
Guess I’ll get to try it out a little earlier than I’d planned.
Nb: MicroCenter will not ship to Hawaii. Ditto re many other manufacturers/sites.
I see that’s going over like a lead balloon.
Mueller clearly doesn’t remember what happened the last time he suggested that.
The problem is Obama doesn’t know there isn’t such a species as a thing as a Republican with the ability to use reason and logic. He needs to give up on this fairy tale of bipartisanship.
If they don’t take advantage of this gift from Shelby the Dems are a lost cause. How many more opportunies are they going to let slip through their fingers?
Let the darn Republicans filibuster a jobs bill. That is not going to fly with the unemployed and their families. A filibuster of a jobs bill would be another golden opportunity to demonize the wicked Republicans.
The Dems definitely need to produce more attack dogs.
Non.
Haw haw haw.
I hear that after taxes $9 million really isn’t a lot of money.
Going out to Michael Steel for that joke. Heh.
