Despite all the negative press and sternly worded (though anemically delivered) admonitions generated by the West Wing, the Barons of Excess are still flipping the bird at the American people and plundering the company coffers. This time, the culprit is Lazard Ltd. (formerly Lazard Frères), the investment house that’s been around even longer than the Giant Vampire Squid Goldman Sachs. Lazard, to its credit, had refused to be bailed out by the American taxpayers and managed to avoid being consumed by J.P. Morgan or BoA during their feeding frenzy in 2008, but such fiscal discipline hasn’t carried over into 2010:
What should have been a profitable quarter a Lazard Ltd. turned into a surprising loss due to the investment bank paying its people big bonuses.
The firm doled out $616 million in compensation and benefits to about 2,300 employees last quarter, or more than triple the amount handed out in the same period in 2008. It was a consequence, Lazard said, of a decision to pay more bonuses in cash and accelerate some deferred cash awards from a prior year. But so great was the firm’s generosity that compensation costs overwhelmed quarterly revenues and resulted in a net loss of about $55 million for the fourth quarter. The charges also almost wiped out full-year profits.
Trés impressive, no? Seems the average bonus at Lazard was a measly $565,000. Pshaw, that’s chicken scratch! You have to hand it to this country – where else is “talent” defined as rapaciousness and greed?
Someone needs to remind Lazard’s board of directors that the company was taken public in 2005, and that they have a whole host of presumably angry shareholders to explain this grotesque loss to. And gentlemen, this hardly qualifies as an “explanation”:
“[Our compensation policies] should enhance our competitiveness and drive shareholder value,” Mr. Jacobs said, in a prepared statement. “Our goal is to grow annual compensation expense at a slower rate than revenues.”
Get the fuck outta here! It’s the company’s goal to ensure that it takes in more than it pays out? What kind of crazy accounting practice is that?
Does anyone else get the feeling that this country is quickly approaching a tipping point? This is no longer a matter of retaining the best talent, a canard so overused that it needs a hip replacement. It is simply unfettered gluttony, and the main players are starting to cannibalize each other.
And someone needs to point out to the sanctimonious D.C. remoras like John Boehner, once he’s done fellating the Wall Street fat cat donors for campaign cash, that gluttony is a sin.

watertiger!
Is this gluttony or greed? Maybe both. It’s at least one of the Seven Deadly any way you count it.
Zed?
yeah, i lose count.
Can’t you explode from those conditions?
And I thought the company I work for paid big bonuses (taxed and with all the other usual deductions taken out before we see it). But ours don’t run anywhere near that much, and the amount depends on performance at all levels. (None of this ‘give everyone six figures’ sh*t.)
i think they think too big to fail means they are too big to stop
Could throw in some lust (for money) and make it a threefer. Or…and here’s a pleasant evening thought…maybe the bastards could all just go to hell.
Gosh, the stock price for LAZ dropped 6.5% today.
Oops.
Not even.
pride is also included. and lust.
somebody needs to get Kevin Spacey on this, STAT.
de Boner, heez tooz bizy smoking the french cigar on his knees to noteece anything but the aide du toilette counting the money dat goes eento de suitcase.
We could only hope.
How is everyone?
Seems to me like they are pillaging their shareholders, who should (though after the Reagan-Bush-Bush pogrom may not) have legal recourse against them.
*cough*shareholderlawsuit*cough*
They have found a way to consume all they want and have the rest of the country explode for them.
That’s a scary kitty…
Great catch in self-mockery WT.
We are all Mr. Creosote now.
The banksters are Mr. Creosote?
What are you drinking WT?
As WT says at 20.
Except that we don’t get the wafer-thin mint…
Now, now, watertiger.
The
peonsshareholders simply do not understand the nuances that lie behind this strategic positioning in the market. Fortunately, the Lords of Finance (h/t masaccio!) understand these things just fine, and have matters well in hand.LOL! GMTA, BCT!
BYOB, ASAP.
Let’s face it, we’re all fucked. Except the banksters and politicians.
Or the bucket.
[Our compensation policies] should enhance our competitiveness and drive shareholder value, down into the toilet.
Fixed for clarity.
Our compensation policies] should enhance our competitiveness and drive shareholder value off a cliff…”
His omission of those last three words must have been inadvertent, no?
I believe I owe you the beverage of your choice. Might I recommend a nice malt liquor? I particularly enjoy the convenient screw cap…
He was trying hard not to snigger.
You’re right, as usual, peterr. We should just don our sackcloth tunics and head back out into the fields to work. Serfs have no place questioning the business practices of the MOTUs.
A 40 would do nicely, unless you have a little Thunderbird.
Josh reports,Arianna aggregates, Senator Shelby places blanket hold on all Obama nominations.
To which I say, once again a Republican Dick justifies his name.
And whenthehell are the Democrats going to stop this b.s.? Second largest majority in history, remember?
Actually, mixing the two might be provocative, if not entirely explosive.
Extortion. It’s what’s for breakfast.
Agua Tigre…!
“Does anyone else get the feeling that this country is quickly approaching a tipping point?”
We’ve already tippled…! ;-)
At least there’s one senator who appears to be acting responsibly…
Perhaps we should spike the banksters’ water coolers. 8-)
An excellent suggestion.
Probably tippled, not tipped.
Al Franken for President!
WT’s had enough folks…
Natch. I wonder if he’s figuring, “What the hell? If I get reelected, I do. If I don’t, I don’t…”
We need more of that. Way more.
Franken could do a helluva SOTU. “The State of the Union is…oy…”
Counting how long before he betraus, 5, 4, 3, 2 …
E, that’s what I typed…! ;-) *smooch*

“The State of the Union is…
oy… farblondjet…”Suggested edit.
Actually, I think he figured out that he has a better chance of getting re-elected if he actually does what they elected him to do (which is what he said he would do). A few more elected officials would do well to remember that.
tsk tsk tsk i really thought you would last longer after all that training ya did in the corner
A friend sent me this youtube link.
Hitler Finds Out the Massachusetts Senate Seat Was Won by Republican Scott Brown
It made me laugh, although I’m a little conflicted because it kind of reinforces the wingnut meme about liberal fascism but the subtitles sum up the failed Obama Administration quite well.
P.S. – it will probably be less amusing to those possessing good comprehension of German
Good for Franken. A man of his word.
Very cool…
Yup.
ha!
Not relevant to the discussion, just thought it was information pups would appreciate:
The following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation.
Annals of Congress, 5th Congress
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

That’s what we should be electing them to do. Go to DC, represent us. The buck from this district stops in your office, vote in the way you believe best.
If you get re-elected, you get re-elected. If you don’t, you don’t. I hope you had a great ride and learned something.
There have been various stories that Wall Street players are cashing in their chips because they see the stock bubble bursting sometime soon. This is one way of looking at the Lazard bonuses. I would point out that the stock market has lost more than 700 points since January 19.
It is always hard to predict when a bubble will burst but increased jitteriness is a tell.
the subtitles sum up the failed Obama Administration quite well.
Most definitely.
Yup, Treaty of Tripoli. Like the Constitution, it’s just a goddamned piece of paper to our corporatist overlords.
Reread my 37…! ;-)
i burned out nagging bmaz not to hog all the chips.
aiiight, i’m outty for the night. be good, y’all.
Franken voted for cloture on the Bernanke nomination and then voted against him. The Senate is quite easy to analyze. There are no progressives in it. OK, there’s Bernie Sanders but he always caves so he really doesn’t count.
hahahaha g’nite aquakitty
Nighters!
Ha! Liza Minnelli made me paint my fingernails yellow and blue when I was a youngster! She forced it!
Hi there Humans! I manage to not have a bad attitude tonight, so there you go!
Nitey Nite…
Jenny Sanford used to be VP of M&A at Lazard.
That is all.
Aloha, M’dear…!
I actually agree with that vote. The fillibuster is profoundly anti-democratic and ought to be abolished.
incestuous!
Hey there! How’s tricks down in the southern Rockies?
Lot’s of funny lines, too hard to pick a favorite but here are a couple contenders.
“Rush Limbaugh made a pact with the Devil, he knew Obama would fail. True story.”
and
“Should have stuck with Hillary.”
g’nite to all those departing
Heh!
If there were tricks to turn, you KNOW I’d be doing ‘em.
Sadly, I’m just mild-to-wild, honey.
Think I will call it an early night. Take care all.
g’nite dr (pause) dick
Stand and SMOOCH me before you leave!
Aloha, Dr. D…!
Strictly speaking, that’s not what he said. Rather, I think he’s hoping to get things under control so it won’t get to that point…
Things just a little snowy up here in the northern Rockies. We are at about 70% of snowpack now. Not good for summer and fire season.
Suz, I’m hot to trot, tonite…! *g*
yup — you’ve been on quite a roll — glad to see it dood
Yeah, you got some probs, but HEY! I’m Smoocing on ya,’K?
Smoochy smoochy smooch!
Actually, Hugh, I think that Franken did exactly the honorable thing. The President is entitled to make his nominations, and the Senate can disapprove the nomination if 51 members don’t agree.
Occasionally there might be a nomination so odious that a filibuster is called for. Clarence Thomas comes to mind, but the evidence against him should have been sufficient to deny him confirmation.
Twenty-three Senators voted against cloture. I can’t blame Franken very much, under the circumstances. If there’d been 60 yea votes, then I’d blame him, but he’s a first-termer who won by a few hundred votes after the recount.
Did you at least rec it…? ;-)
of course i did dood — i rec all the diaries i like
But it isn’t being abolished and in the meantime it is being used by Senators like Franken to have it both ways on votes that do great damage to the country.
I recommended it, now if I can only learn to read…
Sorry I am that I have to agree with you. Have we ever signed a treaty that we weren’t ready to break? You know, grass growing, streams flowing, wind blowing …
Hello, can someone please catch me up, at least on the outrage du jour?
I just don’t have much blog time, so a precis of today would be great if there was a kind soul to advise me….
Except that Richard Shelby put a hold all ALL of Obama’s nominees till he gets his marbles.
rahm had to apologize again for the r word and rush didn’t (i think) glenn beck said it a bunch too (and it’s on video)
Turns out our gummint sucks and not in the good way.
Seriously, I shall bang my head against a hard surface again…! Make the Repugs Filibuster… D’uh…!! Roll out the cots…! I know… Preaching to the choir and all…! ;-)
100?
I thought it had been confirmed Rush was just referring to getting new tires on his limo?
You win, CTuttle, and congrats on the 100!
Paul Krugman’s charts don’t make sense.
Oh, wait, you said du jour …
Missed by THAT much! :-)
HA!
congrats on the 100
Shelby is taking obstructionism to a new level.
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/
I guess that’s what happens when ya start preaching and all…! *g*
Back in a mo -must change PCs!
forker — that’s forking extortion
IIRC only 6 Democrats voted against cloture. I can not think of a more important vote. Bernanke is one of the primary architects of a financial and economic disaster whose costs easily exceed $10 trillion, will result in millions of American families losing their homes, and tens of millions losing their jobs or unable to find full time employment. Rather than fix the system he bailed out the worst of the worst in it, no strings attached, and there is a strong likelihood of depression in 2011 as further fallout from his actions. So for me, this was a make or break vote and Franken failed it massively.
That average figure might be misleading. At 9/30/09, the company had 1,085 people classified as professionals and support staff, against 1,200 people classified as directors and business professionals. I’m guessing that support staff group isn’t getting a big part of the bonuses.
Luck of the preach?
OK, one other irrelevant thought, but you pups might find interesting. “Retardation” is still in the diagnostic nomenclature of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychological Association.
WT, when yer right (always) yer right . . . great read, thanks.
Now to catch up with the snark and its holiness from Pups, after Queen Snark has delivered the carcass to gnaw on.
*G*
Cheers! Clink with my 97!
as a diagnosis — not a term used to demean and insult
And that’s another bit of Senate habit that needs to be changed. It’s one thing for a senator to put a hold on the nomination of a US attorney in her State.
It’s something entirely different to allow them to put holds on any nomination at all because the President is near, you know.
Market bottomed at a 3 month low.
Anamoly?
I don’t THINK so, homie . . . ;-)
Try here. I think the proper response to this one is “Hell will freeze over before you get an earmark or an amendment”. Too bad we don’t have a Senate Majority Leader in the Democratic Party, eh?
hey masaccio — i saw this video and thought of your art post this week.
hope ya do another one soon
That doesn’t make much sense.
The real shame is that the Republicans now seem to hold a de facto majority in the Senate.
Too bad we don’t have a
Senate MajorityLeader in the Democratic Party, eh?Fixed it for ya.
You don’t recall correctly. Here’s the vote, which was in the article I linked to, BTW. In any case, there weren’t anywhere near enough to matter.
Heh. I am back. You shall now suffer.
Thanks. I get too wordy sometimes.
Context, aardie.
Under the Constitution ratified treaties are the law of the land. So the Treaty of Tripoli legally sets the precedent that the United States of America is not a Christian nation.
was missing a snark tag
With Dr. Puma, don’t we need a “no, seriously” tag more than a snark tag?
One of the best actors of all time, from the advent of DW Griffith’s Birth Of A Nation.
With it being currently called into question… The veritable double dip… With the unexpected revision downward in the jobs report, and, that only followed the initial whammy of an European market meltdown, spearheaded by Portugal…! 8-(
Well, I’m off to bed. Hasta la later, folks.
I can’t even believe that one senator would be able to put a hold on all nominees. WTF kind of a democracy would allow such corruption? Where do I live?
Since this thread is all over the place, there’s one thing I want you all to know.
Gay People are winning.
We’re winning our rights. all the time, despite the PropHate shit, and BTW, there’s nothing better that could happen for you.
All of the sudden, you’ll dance better and your salsa will be TO DIE FOR!
Just saying!
g’nite bct
When the Democrats don’t want to hang together and the GOP does, that’s kinda how it is. In fact, look at the difference in how I made Democrats plural and the Republican Party singular.
This is a lesson I keep trying to drill into progressives’ heads. If the largest voting block is a minority, it still has lots of power if it hangs together. Sadly, that’s not what the progressives in Congress do. At least, not often enough or long enough to matter. For an idea what I’m talking about, see Jay Inslee today. Does it looks like progressives are banding together and saying “no PO, no bill”? If they were, there either would be a PO or there wouldn’t be a bill.
Of course; but to hear Palin et. al talk, the term “retardation” in itself is objectionable. I mean, I really don’t care if they want to use the term developmentally disabled. It all means the same thing of having an abnormally low level of intelligence.
Some GREAT Thunderbird!
(starts slow, bear with it)
It’s a good point about that graph of Krugman. I saw that earlier today and had the same reaction that I knew the point being conveyed but couldn’t figure out what the graph was actually saying.
true — just pointing out the difference between the two uses
g’nite BC
Think I’ll head out too. Big snow storm headed this way, gotta rest up for a busy day making snow devils. Splendid evening to all.
Thanks for making clear the point I was trying to make.
a great tune dood — better audio
g’nite ratty
I’ve always believed Cindy Lou McCain! /s
Good LARD, am I the only homo on this thread?
TEDDY!
Yeah, that and my 401k is tanking to shit, too, again.

Teddy Wan Kenobi, Help me!
kelly — you traveling or home this week?
sekrit travel!
Home today, thank DOG!
Well, Kelly, I understand how it might make a difference to you, but, I think you know by now, it doesn’t make a damn to the rest of us.
agree completely.
Hey I know, let’s boycott Alabama! No more expensive junkets to…never mind.
X
Actually my memory is correct. I wrote about it recently as an addition to my Obama scandals list:
My cut and paste doesn’t transfer the links but is the same one to the Senate vote you cite.
Can we get a summary of WHY you like this?
I read your diary, I don’t see why what Gates is saying is good for we the people, eliminating interventionist policies, costly contracting, overseas military failures, etc, etc, etc.
Where’s the pony you are promising, hoss?
*G*
Excellent point, Margot!!!
I’m so huffing your snark!
Otherwise, meet me out back and I’ll kick your ass. Heh.
hey gw — how’s your neighbors kid?
I looked at his lessons for WWS 543, or whatever his course is called. Couldn’t figure out any of the charts.
Don’t know if I can pass for sapiens but maybe erectus, well semi-erectus at least… been a long day.
Move Redstone Labs to Washington. I could go for that.
and huntsville (aka rocket city)?
Sadly, that’s a bingo, and a winner.
Me neither. Not friendly charts.
Wow. I meant what I said; don’t see how you saw a snark.
i took it as high praise aardvark
Including CT, massachio has been on a HUGE roll past month or so . . across the board.
Hell of a group at this pond . . . just incredible, day after day . . .
Ah, Democrats. Yes, you’re right. Still, nowhere near enough of anyone to prevent cloture. Where are all those obstructionists when you need them?
Dear Straight Liberal People –
What you have managed to ignore is something a bunch of us silly queens have done. En Masse.
See, we just PRETEND that we are equal. And we are getting there by just being, you know, ourselves.
Be Your Liberal Selves!
Franken voted for closure, letting Bernanke be appointed after.
What part of that is good, in any way, shape or form???????????
Picky-picky, eh…? Dayam…! ;-)
Leave Huntsville where it is, just give us the labs.
It was.
works for me :)
New to me, thanks Cujo. So that’s how to get to them, by threatening to close or move bases and arsenals etc.?
Well if us gay people don’t mean dime’s worth of difference to you, I say, and offer you, a hail and hearty
***
(MOD NOTE: no insulting folks like that)
He didn’t piss off his leadership for no good reason. If it had been a close vote, then I’d be upset, but it wasn’t. I suspect the word went out that everyone was supposed to vote for cloture on Bernanke. In any event, almost everyone did.
You mean I don’t have to pretend to be a Queen?
Damn, THAT’S pressure off of the old codpiece!!!
Good to see yas, sorry works got you all tied up, and unable to romp with us all.
Make money, hoss, take care of self and family (Belch) and others in yer fold.
So far, your snark edge is still sharp as a blade . . . . ;-)
kelly that is uncalled for. go back and read it again. it was a compliment
Yeah, picky, but I didn’t understand all your happy . . . honest, I’d NOT snark ya about this kind of thing, not my style . . . always like your diaries!
That explains a lot actually. Maybe it’s something he learned from Bernanke.
Btw, Larue, besides Tex telling me I’m too serious… The Beach House got it’s 100,000 visitor today…! ;-)
It’s leverage. I don’t know if it’s really practical, given how the base closure thing works these days. But that’s the sort of thing you need to do. That’s what the earmarks thing is about – it’s just divvying up the money that’s appropriated. If less goes to AL and more to WA, then that’s less that Sen. Shelby can brag about in his letters to his constituents.
It’s clear that the GOP thinks they can do this without any repercussions. Reid needs to prove to them that’s wrong, or he won’t get anything done.
hi girl,
he’s home and got a long road of recovery ahead. the prognosis is ultimately good. we’ll just see how it goes.
You know, you need to get off your high horse. With all due respect, I am the only psychologist who has publicly supported gay and lesbian rights, as well as abortion rights in Kansas. Not a single female colleague has been willing to put themselves on the line as I have. As I have stipulated on other threads, I was willing to go before the joint house and senate committee and defend the practices of Dr. Tiller, one of the most compassionate physicians I have ever known. Tell me, Kelly, have you put yourself out there as I have?
I want to put a hurt on him he won’t ever forget. Parliamentarily speaking, of course.
I ain’t seeing a compliment. I’m not getting it.
Somebody show me my error. I’ll be happy to admit blogwrongess.
Always irascible, always delighting, always a delight.
*G*
I’m agreeing, and hoping for the 200.
There ya go, the full song, too . . thanks . . *G*
We’re all homo’s Kelly, some of us are erectus some of the time, some of us are erectus all of the time, others of our species can’t be erectus, other than upright . . . . it’s a gender thang.
Yer not alone, yer among friends, yer safe with us.
Trust me.
*G*
When I first read it, I was really shocked. Then I looked at it some more and thought he was trying to say we’re all just people and it doesn’t make a difference who’s gay, who’s straight, who’s black, who’s hispanic, who’s white, who’s male, female, etc.
I find NO good in any of what you just commented upon.
It’s why we’re fucked, cuz the progs STILL go along with the status quo, no matter WHAT they belch, spew or preach.
I miss that place . . .
200?
I haven’t taken a look at the QDR yet. Certain questions immediately come to mind.
1. Making quagmires like Iraq and Afghanistan the central focus is a bad idea. We shouldn’t be in either country.
2. Gates intends to keep expanding the DOD budget as far as the eye can see.
3. Has the DOD’s stance on contractors changed?
4. Gates continues to want to waste big bucks on missile defenses. The spending is actually higher for this than under Bush.
5. Do we need new weapons systems like the $80+ million F-35? Who do we plan to use this plane against?
6. Taibbi had a piece not so long ago suggesting that, in fact, Obama was planning on cutting the budget for support of servicepeople. Which is it? More or less?
I will leave this as a comment at your thread as well.
200 too..?
Again?
200
Alas, to Hugh go the spoils, deservedly so, too.
congrats hugh
Good questions, Hugh, the kind that nagged me when I read the diary but didn’t have the capacity to ask outright as you do . . I mean, a military man trying to spin reduction in forces?
A dedicated Pentagon member?
I don’t think so, ergo, why I wondered where CT was getting the happy . . . . and he’s VERY insightful about military, always, so I was really confused with the happy . .
CT, again, NOT chastising or lambasting, honestly curious about the happy in Gates, or any other such, when they say this kind of stuff (cuz we KNOW they don’t mean it, right?)
Tomorrow morning Shelby should be greeted with this.
Senator Shelby, Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
I am sorry if I was a dick earlier. I didn’t mean to be.
Hugh wins!! (BTW Hugh, whenever I’m skimming I read your comments.)
Of the Democrats who voted against cloture, all are either not up for re-election this year, or they’re in safe districts. And there were only six of them. My irritation is a lot more general than to be directed at the just-barely elected junior Senator from Minnesota. Look at those asterisks. There’s one in particular who won’t have any re-election issues. Plus, as we’ve noted, even in the actual confirmation vote, there were only eleven Democrats who voted against confirmation, and nineteen Republicans. There’s a lot more problem there. By any reasonable standard, Bernanke should have been voted down in a landslide.
Hmm, not sure what happened . . . don’t really care . . . anything you might have done, should be excused per your standing in the community . . . we all fuck up. Lord knows I have . . *G*
*smooches*
The Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices
There you have it, straight from wikipedia.
huggies and lovies kelly
I read it to mean everyone here knows we are all equal in fact, even if the law of the land is slow catching up.
Hope all is well in your world, greenwarrior.
Had to get Bob’s dishes caught up before turning in. Going for real now.
g’nite for realsies rat
Thank you hunny. You make a world of difference to me.
You can spell it out any way you want, I can’t fault your intended logic.
Other than to repeat what I said.
Any vote for CLOTURE to bring Bernanke to full appointment was a vote against progressivism, a vote against we the people.
We must punish for this, we must NOT let this slide, regardless of the politics involved.
Letting it slide cuz it’s procedure or part of appealing to a constituent base at home, is how we got INTO this.
I don’t think Franken was elected, however narrow, to rep his constituents by supporting glaringly failed and proven failed policies that screw we the people, or supporting the people who brought these failures to we the people and his constituents.
so go grab that zed on my lln thread upstairs
Well, Kelly, if that was a sort-of apology to me, I will accept it. My best friend in high school, one of the toughest men I have ever known, was gay. He was a small college all American offensive tackle. My oldest son, soon to be seventeen was named after him. He died of AIDs, but he live long enough that I have a picture of him and my oldest as a one year-old sitting on his lap.
In order:
1. Agreed. Unfortunately, they’re the wars we’re in at the moment. They occupy a substantial portion of the Army and the Marines. That’s a problem that’s above Gates’ level.
2. No one’s saying no, either. Expecting a department head to do anything but ask for the Moon when he can get it is like asking for a unicorn on your birthday. What’s really needed is for someone above his level to say “Your budget’s going to be cut by XX percent by FY 2014. Here are our defense concerns. Figure out how to do this.”
3. Another problem that, practically speaking, is above his level. Congress has to want to change things, and so does the President. Neither seems willing, since it’s part of what keeps their gravy trains going.
4. Yes, this makes no sense to me. I suspect part of the issue is Congress, but in this case I don’t see why that is a problem. BMD isn’t that important a program yet.
5. We wouldn’t if we had a sane procurement system. We’re flying thirty year old tactical aircraft. Sooner or later, age alone is going to be a problem, even if they’re not obsolete. Gates could help this by recommending changes, but beyond that I’m not sure what he can do. And the F-35 probably does have a big constituency in Congress.
The rot in the military industrial complex is pretty deep. It really is going to take determined effort, not to mention some sacrifice by politicians, to change that.
6. I’ve seen no such thing. What little I’ve read indicates that’s either going to stay the same or get bigger, depending on what we’re actually talking about…
Thought about this for a bit, and I want to know, Kelly, how you have put your butt out there on the line for gay and lesbian rights, as well as abortion rights as I have? I think that is a fair and reasonable question, given you snipes at me.
hey aardvak — folks are upstairs on the late late nite thread now
That’s a fine tribute on your part. And I’m glad you have done so.
However, I shall not be shamed by you. In the least.
Your experience is yours, my experience is mine.
Where in the world do you get the idea that in any way I have tried to shame you? Please, I would really like to understand how you can construe anything I have said as trying to shame you. Shame is a powerful word.
aardvark — this is probably where that came from.
Franken also voted for the senate health insurance CEO golden parachute funding requirement that Obama wanted all along bill.
Find some balls, Al.
Found one, looks like. More, please, Al.
“Sen. Al Franken ripped into White House senior adviser David Axelrod this week during a tense, closed-door session with Senate Democrats.”

Please don’t refer to barbarians at the gate in a pejorative sense. As a trained medieval history scholar, I would argue that the barbarians were the solution to an earlier fat-cat problem.
The German barbarians were greeted as liberators by the suffering workers and tax-payers of the Roman Empire. Not so much by the banksters and aristocrats inside “the gates”. The Germans were honest, down-to-earth looters who preyed on the big estates, the wealthy temples, and the palaces of financiers and tax-farmers. Not perfect perhaps. But pretty darn good by coparison.
So now that Wall Street has had its fling, I say, let the real, honest, old-fashioned kind of looting begin! To the gated communities!
