Some in the military still trying to deny the overturning of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’.

Deep Thoughts on Prop 8 Trial |
| By: Teddy Partridge Wednesday January 13, 2010 9:00 pm |
[Teddy will be on Air America tonight at 9:30pm pacific - livestream here] Freed from liveblogging by the very able Marcy Wheeler today at noontime, I took some time to decompress in the main courtroom this afternoon. That gave me a chance to think through some questions I’ve been asked by my FDL peers as [...]
Late Night: I Heartily Endorse Harold Ford to Keep Running for the Senate in New York, Because These Days We All Need a Good Laugh |
| By: Thers Wednesday January 13, 2010 8:13 pm |
A lot of folks have been making fun of Harold Ford’s New York Times interview today. Spencer says he comes across like “a carpetbagger and a pussy”; Steve M. says “those cries of ‘Run, Harold, run!’ you hear in the distance are coming from Gillibrand’s office.” Fez-Boy says “I should add, it’s not just that [...]
Senate Revenue Plan is a Teacher Tax, Not a “Cadillac” Tax |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday January 13, 2010 7:30 pm |
The so called “Cadillac” tax is, in reality, a teacher tax. It taxes plans based on their cost, but not their generosity. As anyone who has bought health insurance will tell you, the biggest factor in determining the cost of insurance is not how generous the coverage is, but the sex, age, and health status of the buyer. As a result professions that tend to employer older, less healthy females–like teaching–will bare the brunt of this excise tax, regardless of how generous or bare bones the policies.
Timeline: Follow the AIG Emails |
| By: Cynthia Kouril Wednesday January 13, 2010 7:01 pm |
This is a timeline based on the emails released by Federal Reserve Bank in response to a letter request from Rep. Darrell Issa. These emails show AIG trying to do plain vanilla disclosures, and initially involving the Fed to make sure they were disclosing enough. But the disclosures were inadequate and the Fed did not ensure AIG did make adequate disclosure. The emails released thus far are sufficiently damning and raise a host of suspicions;we have a right to know the full story. Further, because of the push back and forth, it is hardly wild speculation to think there is a smoking gun document out here.
Banksters Caught in Election-Year Crossfire, Besieged by Populist Assaults |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday January 13, 2010 6:20 pm |
Between the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission’s launch, the FDIC risk-based fee and the Obama “bank tax,” now is really not a good time to be a bankster. Populism has finally reached Washington, and anything seen as harmful to the banks is suddenly good politics.
US Response Muted on Acquittal of UAE Royal Shown Torturing on Tape |
| By: Jeff Kaye Wednesday January 13, 2010 5:20 pm |
The U.S. military and industrial alliances can’t be made to bother themselves with Sheikh Issa’s self-made how-to tape on torture and mayhem, nor the fact that their erstwhile allies can get away with horrific crimes. Should justice stand in the way of the billions of dollars in profits to be made? I only ask one thing: Watch the tapes, and consider how far down you, as a citizen of the United States, really wish this country to fall.
