The race for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat was won last night by Republican Scott Brown. This is a huge win for President Obama and progressives.

Call Earl Blumenauer’s office and ask him if he intends to vote no on any health care bill that does not have a public option like he said he would. Let him know that 90% of our readers think he should return the money if he doesn’t (or perhaps, as some have suggested, give it to Hatian relief).

In the wake of the failed underpants bombing attempt, new airport security rules have been added, and discussion has ramped up of the use of full-body scanners and other invasive technologies. We ask Liliana Segura of AlterNet and Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent if we can scan ourselves to safety, or if this is just more security theater designed to get us to give up our civil liberties.

Since adding the public option or expanding Medicare in reconciliation is one of the only viable ways to pay for the deal on the excise tax without raising taxes, something that the White House and Congress have agreed to, its popularity in this close district is a positive sign for those who still hope to see health care reform passed.

Ezra Klein says that “a Democratic Party that would abandon their central initiative this quickly isn’t a Democratic Party that deserves to hold power.” I would add that if they don’t stand up to the lobbyists they’ve kowtowed to from the start, “holding power” won’t be anything they have to worry about.

Let me put this as simply as possible. Democrats control everything in Washington right now. They control the White House. They have a huge margins in the House and in the Senate. Democrats have larger margins in both chambers than any party has had for decades. They have zero excuses for failing to deliver. Americans will not find some nonsense about having only 59 Senate seats as an acceptable excuse for failing to accomplish anything. If Democrats think they can win in 2010 by running against Republican obstructionism, they will lose badly.
