So that’s it? The Republicans can’t govern, and the Democrats don’t want to govern? The worst is that I can’t help but feel like the main emotion people in the caucus are feeling is relief at this turn of events. Now they have a ready excuse for not getting anything done. While I always thought [...]

Suicide or Murder: US Clandestine Services Play the Oldies |
| By: Jeff Kaye Wednesday January 20, 2010 5:13 pm |
On Monday, Scott Horton blew a hole straight through the government’s lies when Harpers Magazine published the results of his investigation into the supposed suicides of three Guantanamo prisoners in June 2006. It’s clear now that the men were murdered — possibly tortured to death — at a secret heretofore undisclosed black site at Guantanamo, and then made to look as if they killed themselves, while other evidence to the contrary was ignored or suppressed or destroyed.
But this is not the first time that murders have been cooked up to look like suicide.

Outside the Prop 8 Courtroom: “Sassy Parody” and Cindy McCain Against Hate |
| By: emptywheel Wednesday January 20, 2010 4:00 pm |
Two updates on the Prop 8 fight happening outside the courtroom. First, Protect Marriage has just sued the Courage Campaign for what it says is trademark infringement. At issue is the logo (on the left) Courage Campaign is using for its trial tracker–depicting two women and their children–which is a clear parody of the logo ProtectMarriage uses (to the right), depicting a mommy and daddy and two kids. In other news, Cindy McCain has signed up for the No H8 campaign, adding yet another prominent Republican voice to the growing list that opposes the discrimination of Prop 8 (this picture is from advocate.com via HuffPo).
How to Pay for Excise Tax Fix: Savings from Public Option, or New Taxes? |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday January 20, 2010 3:00 pm |
Now that Martha Coakley has lost, it seems that there are only two paths to passing health care reform–and both use reconciliation. One path would be a new, redesigned bill passed using reconciliation. The other would be to force the House to pass the Senate bill as is. Given that the Senate bill is unlikely to gain majority support in the House, the only way House Democrats would accept passing the Senate bill without changes is with a promise to fix the bill using a separate piece of legislation passed through budget reconciliation.

TSA Nominee Surrenders to Jim DeMint |
| By: Michael Whitney Wednesday January 20, 2010 2:01 pm |
Erroll Southers, Obama’s nominee to run the Transportation Security Administration has withdrawn his name because he has become a “lightning rod for those with a political agenda.” Read: Jim DeMint doesn’t like unions, so I’m going to just run and hide. This is ludicrous.
Penny-Wise and a Pound of Lies: Lanny Davis Spins Coakley’s Loss to Service Corporatist Goals |
| By: emptywheel Wednesday January 20, 2010 1:05 pm |
I don’t blame Lanny for staying up all night to try to spin Coakley’s loss as a call to move to the center. The more logical lesson to draw from it is that Americans are sick of corporatists like Lanny Davis (he rather amusingly adopted the label “liberal” for himself in this piece, though I suspect WSJ may have just stripped the “Neo-” that came before it). Which is precisely what Lanny’s extensive parsing tries to deny.
