The Known Universe. From the American Museum of Natural History‘s YouTube page:
The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010.

About Firedoglake
Aloha, Suz…!
aloha ct how’s paradise tonight?
OMG I thought that I’d NEVER get here — I feel like I’ve been lost in space for the last hour.
hey ce — the lake was down for maintenance but is perking right along now — how’s ohio tonight?
G’evening, Suze & Pups!
hey ndfg — how ya doing tonight?
Hello Suzanne (starting video now)
i’m cold. Howsabout you?
hey teddy — hope ya enjoy it as much as i did
Hiya Suzanne,
I knew the Lake was down, but I just got stuck in a loop with earlier posts…and then logging in and out, yadda, yadda…
we stayed in all day, cooking and watching movies. A totally wasted day, but very satisfying!
tis 43 outside. rain forecast for tomorrow
ooooo whatcha watch? and whatcha cook?
Oh shit, what am I doing in Tibet?
i found when that happens to hit control f5 (on a pc) — i guess it clears out the old page that is stuck and forces the new to reload
hey ofg — hope ya don’t get air sickness :) how ya doing dood?
it’s 5 here. But no wind, so no wind chill. I have turned into a huge wimp when it comes to the cold.
Ain’t it cool that she’s amongst us again… Bum eye and all…! *g*
That is so peaceful to watch, Suz. Goes nicely with Masaccio’s post earlier tonight about Van Gogh…doesn’t the swirled Milky Way look like the whorls in his Starry Night painting?
Uum, roast chicken with lemon, garlic and butter under the skin. Potato salad with tiny gold potatoes and egg, sour cream and mayo (Trader Joe’s is so PIQUANT)… Cousin Bette, PBS Emma tonight, and last night Crimson Rivers…
Very cool, thank you!
hey margot — i had not noticed that — totally cool — indeed our very own starry starry night
how ya doing tonight?
ofg!
le sigh
le tummy rumbling
glad ya enjoyed it dood
I normally fly at an altitude of seventy inches. That was some serious long haul truckin’. My force field is just a lame-assed cow catcher bumper guard.
Excellent video, Suz. Most academic!!! I guess I’m used to music or fantastic cartoons, so this was a nice surprise.
Hey, NDFG! How’re the peepers?
hahahaha always a pleasure to have ya visit late late nite — how’s your shoulder?
No such thing as a wasted day, Christine!
thanks loohoo — figured to give some eye and brain candy tonight — i try to do something special when i’m hosting sunday night’s lln.
Like some our Facebook friends — we barely got out of our pjs all weekend, just enough to shower and go to the grocery. God, it is cold here!
You tell us!!!
Sister!
Oh, please OFG — what are you dong?
Arrr! *adjusts eye patch*
Hey Teddy, been keeping up with your prop h8 trial. Seems judicial activism is back in vogue these days, thanks to John “ballsnstrikes” Roberts, Scalito, Kennedy “coin toss,” and Clarence “horndog” Thomas.
I don’t blame you for being freaked out about the cold. I take it as a major factor in real estate prices here in the San Diego area.
That’s where the video put me down. Suzanne, my wing is weak but not too much pain. I suspect I will carry it with me to the dirt nap.
Great catch, Margot. Really good.
That was such a wonderful post by Masaccio — could we get him to do one every week? Love his posts on art.
be sure to leave that suggestion on his post — that he make art a weekly post
kinda like my back and fake knee — i hear ya dood.
i think they chose that because it is the tallest place on earth to start the journey
Suzanne,
The two he did this month were like sunsets … lovely and reflective.
All that video needs is a better soundtrack.
Best recovery vibes.
i totally agree — looking at art through his eyes is wonderful. he is so descriptive and evocative in the art posts — completely different that his usual financial stuff
riding the music of memory lane back to my youth… ah thank you ofg
So wonderful to read after a week of battle.
it was the 3rd of september
Isn’t it cool how people have begun their own passion? Art, corruption, gardening, torture, cooking, etc. Crazy wild crowd here, no?
I used that song as a theme for a play I wrote once. Don’t tell the band because I didn’t pay royalties, although they did get a program credit.
OFG, I had to do exercises (big thick rubber band attached to a door, had to pull it various ways) when I had a hurt shoulder. They really helped. Mine was rotator cuff injury, sorry I can’t recall right now if that is what’s wrong with your wing too.
would not have it any other way :)
wonderful idea … i should trot back downstairs and do the same. I was back online today for the first serious length of time in over a week, what a lovely post to greet my eye!
Howard Zinn…” The best thing we can do for Obama is make him better than he is.”
Regarding we need to push on him.
Masachio’s Van Gogh post was a humdinger. Nice change of pace. Did not know he had it in him. His description were inciteful into Vincent’s painting expression. I really enjoyed Masachio’s expression an art in itself then embellished by Rayne and Christine. Like having an Italian ice something you won’t forget. And good evening after a hot Bikram Yoga session. And a lazy Sunday day.
hey bb — some of the finest sunday’s i’ve had were lazy days. how’s your weather down there?
Hey y’all, does Taylor Swift need autotune or what?
hey thatguy — i’ve refused to watch the grammy’s for a couple years now. seems to me they feature the crap and not what was good. blergh
how ya doing dood?
Ayup, torn rotator cuff. Since it is after midnight here, technically it is Monday morning.
tuesday’s just as bad
*heh* Watch out, Colbert is really gonna be insufferable now that he has a comedy Grammy…! ;-)
Hey Suze, it’s sunday night so I’m anxious – as usual. But the ativan settles things out. Still gotta take the trash out.
evening suz. Loading the universe in another window… for later. Still not fast enough here.
Only about 6 weeks to daylight savings time!
did jonny lang and the fisk jubilee singers win?
don’t wanna forget that one. monday night’s the night trash has to be out for me.
Not sure… Taylor Swift is now on… I agree, outta tune indeed…!
hey sunny — its worth the wait :) sunsets are moving north at a fast rate — pretty soon they will be hidden by the grove of trees and i won’t be able to see them from my deck again until late fall. you still freezing?
Ooh, she’s giving Stevie Nicks a run for the money….!
Sunny cool breezy ala pleasant. Got some chores done in a lazy sort of way. Feelin kinda here and now not worried so much about much ado about nothing. Just breathing in the energy and breathing out the negative.
The yoga students are such a nice bunch it is a treat to be around them. Some I know some I am meeting but most are there and gone. Bikram pushes really hard and I tend to lesten to what my body says. But all say I am making excellent for such a short time. (around 6 weeks).
a white winged dove
better version
Nice – a cheery winter thing for you.
I think I’d go with this one.
i do miss them in the summer. i love winters here on the coast — so raw and so much energy.

They do reduce it down …Because the sky is blue it mskes me smile…because the the wrold is round it turns me on. How funny in a happy way.
Like existense knowledge bliss

Now wait a minute
Mighty cool!
That just can’t be beat. I’m hanging up my YouTube hat right now.
crap realized i was hogging the jukebox. sorry
nooooo save me from myself margot — otherwise i’ll be here until all hours of the morning.
again.
Thanks Loo Hoo!
That was a trip
I saw that Roy Orbison finally got his star in Hollywood. He’s a classic.
from the movie about the temptations … i think its one of the best scenes…..
Thank YOU!
oh i’ve not heard that in ages… wonderful
This was amazing!

hey emerson — how ya doing?
That raw power and energy may be why I’m hooked on sailing. Otherwise, I’m not noted for fearlessness ;-)
wow emerson
yes
As Craig Ferguson would say, “I Knooow?”
holy moly wow dood
I didn’t know you were into sailing! It does sound like a peaceful pastime.
i’ve been a pink fan for years — back before dear mr president when she was doing her younger thang.
this is just on a whole nuther level. gobsmacked, i’m just gobsmacked emerson
i would love to sail. and live on a houseboat
have you ever…
ah crap i forgot to try to not get the 100 and got it on accident
Didn’t know you liked Climax Blues Band? One of my all-time favorites! Here’s another
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEBsU-qjqx8
Heh!
Thanks, Emerson. I am going to have to buy a couple songs of theirs. Really like Brief Case but can’t find on utubes.
youtubes, Margot.
Actually, http://www.youtube.com/.
Sometimes it is peaceful. But sometimes it’s wild and exhilarating… and that’s a-ok with me. I love water.
oh hell loohoo i spell it wrong 3/4 of the time myself. tis my most common error here at the lake
OK, the trash is out, I can relax.
feels so good to be feeling good again
Do you know who is a cousin to Robert Earl?
thought that would perk ya up dood :)
Lee Roy!
Ur rite I’m doin it rong :)
I mean, Yes’m.
totally cool that guy — didn’t know that
Lee Roy texted me to agree Taylor Swift had “Out-of Tune” running tonight…
I can’t find it either. But I had 3 albums-Sense of Direction, Stamp Album (my favorite) and FM Live. They were all great. That band was 20 years ahead of their time. Peter Haycock on guitar and Colin Cooper (who just passed away) on sax played simultaneous leads. Blew me away.
I’ll let you know if I find it.
that is so cool dood
Congrats!
Cheers, Margot!
’bout time for me to head out
thanks for the music tonight (and liking this change of pace video tonight)
g’nite all — see ya tuesday
Good night, Suz. Thanks.
Thanks Emerson.
