My favorite moment of the State of the Union address, as noted and captured by John Aravosis at AmericaBlog, was Justice Samuel Alito’s reaction to being mildly criticized.
One of the sillier customs of the SOTU Address (don’t call it a “speech”) along with the ritualistic, half-hearted, rapturous standing ovations is that the Supreme Court comes to sit there and do their impression of the Sphinx. They don’t stand, they don’t applaud, the just sit there. But it is a custom and it is to be rigorously observed.
But when Obama criticized the recent Citizens United vs. FEC decision as ignorning precedent and opening the floodgates to profligate special interests (especially corporate) spending…Alito, who next year will be there in his “Quaker State, NAPA Autoparts, Viagra, Black Velvet Whisky Robe“, was not amused:
Alito has now spoken more in the House Chamber than Clarence Thomas has in the Supreme Court.
Of course, the post-speech reaction of Chris Matthews, is always a “special” uh, thing, he claimed to have liked the speech so much that for at least an hour, he almost forgot Obama was a black guy. Tell you what Chris, next year he’ll enter the House Chamber with the musical accompaniment of “Sweet Georgia Brown” to help you out.

About Firedoglake
It was so good, I knew after about five words that one of the first right wing remarks would be about Pres.O’s rhetorical talents. Wasn’t disappointed.
I didn’t watch the pep talk simply because I’ve given up on Obama. When he starts fulfilling his campaign promises, maybe I’ll listen again. Afterwards David Brooks said he liked it and Al Hunt said liberals would have to swallow hard, so I know it was filled with center-right bullshit. I wish one of the old bastards on the SCOTUS would keel over, one of the 5 that are clueless about living breathing people.
Off topic.
Did I hear correctly on CBS morning news that we are now paying the Taliban not to fight? If we’re going to pay everyone not to fight can’t we cut defense spending?
Sad news this morning. The great Howard Zinn passed away last night.
Obama should go with this can you imagine what his poll numbers would do if he criticized Bush vs Gore?
I submit this respectfully as my resume to the Obama PR team:)
Yep, me too. I slept through the whole mendacious, rambling blowfest.
Howard Zinn was destined to live forever, what the hell happened. Another voice of reason silenced. Shit.
Just imagine Alito’s reaction, Scalia would turn all red and start swearing, Clarence might actually talk in public on the record in front of a non hand picked for loyalty audience to respond!
The GOP would have to defend a law for which no Precedent can be Established the media would have to explain just what that means to the voters!
Its not a game changer but its one hell of a distraction and I think Obama needs it now.
Howard Zinn the history writer what happened?
He died, he was 88 years old.
The GOP loved reagan as the Great Communicator now after 12 years of Bushes they are reduced to Newt and rush being their Stars and Sarah being the one we all talk about.
I smell jealousy:)
Funny, Bill Moyers Friday talked about how many times Newt has been on MTP, as if you should listen to the former speaker, tho never the real speaker.

The Man was a Great Writer. If we could have had him at the Lake for a book club….we would have had a Historical Thread everyone would brag about having been on the thread, extra time would be needed for questions.
Which reminds me maybe some of the book club authors could hire a typist so they could keep up better with all the questions at the book clubs.
just a thought
Frankly we do not need any more bloody preachers we want someone in the WH that will actually do what the fuck he says he will.
A Memory of Howard
by Daniel Ellsberg
For those of us that remember those times on the Boston Common
You are assuming I don’t know who he was?
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/01222010/transcript1.html
We need our people in the media its that simple just imagine what kind of poll numbers we could get on issues if we actually had real Lefties and not paid to take a dive media Liberals on tv and yes that includes you Nancy.
Oh a little prickly this morning are we?
I think McCain has been on the Sunday talkers 19 times in the past year.
Edit: Steve Benen has been counting.
Pretty straight forward question.
There are other readers here besides you Raven at least I hope there is:) When we write to an audience we must consider including the whole audience in the experience when we can.
That explains why the News has such low ratings:)
Agreed.
From the Guardian
Indeed, in America, Fox is the standard bearer for MSM.
Here’s my mantra: Results in year 2.
Thanks for that linky…
good morning nomolos
when zinn was 80+ he came here to give a talk. sharp as a tack and funning as hell. especially great in the q&a.
daniel elsberg, i think it was in his book, secrets, tells of going to anti-vietnam war protests with his affinity group which included zinn and chomsky. what a team they made (didn’t zinn also help elsberg hide out while he was getting copies of the pentagon papers to various places while on the lam?).
r.i.p. howard and thank you for all you did.
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/01/28-0
My bold with words like these any blogger would be proud no wonder the media keeps us off tv!
thank you so much for the link,
How stupid of me to respond to a response sent to me.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Kristof today. In “United We Rant” Ms. Collins says seldom has a presidential address been delivered when so many Americans are so angry for so many different reasons. In “Kids in Crisis (Behind Bars)” Mr. Kristof says a good starting point to rehabilitate young offenders is to stop the criminal abuse many of them endure in correctional facilities.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got blueberry muffins this morning. It was gratifying to see The Supremes spanked. Here endeth my discussion of the speech. Have a great day.
FDL should have Ellsberg come. He’s no spring chicken either. However, it looks like he hasn’t written any books recently, which would not be in keeping with book salon. Maybe FDL could start a prominent progressive person salon.
Howard Zinn, r.i.p. Now I must really read his book that I bought awhile back.
Good morning everyone.
Stop incarcerating them and start educating them would be good.
Never fear. O has just the educational plan. He spoke about it last night. /s
maybe ellsberg could come to talk about the movie that was based on his book. would that suit you?
I handed my burning draft card to an “undercover” FBI person on the common. He took it and politely said thank you……It had become quite friendly at the demonstrations by then as the undercovers, in the main, had no intention of arresting us. Way too much paper work and, frankly a lot of the undercover guys were sympathizers.
I saw Chomsky at MIT a couple of years ago and was mesmerized.
I have never thought your stupid Raven quite the opposite and I like that you and not me seems to be a voice of moral authority here. Sometimes I worry that I try the patience of you and everyone here.
Seconded! that and I want a classics book club:) We have to save the classics from being misinterpreted by George Will!
Ellsberg here under any circumstances would suit me. But yes, I forgot about the movie, too early for fully limber brain. That would be perfect.
Did he push his Charter Schools idiocy or did he mention paying teachers a living salary and giving kids books, pens, satchels etc? My wife and I, although never having kids, pay a lot of tax money for schools (no problem with that as we are socialists!) but we also go and buy back packs, pens, books and other school supplies for kids that should be getting these things through the school system but are not.
Thought Jon Stewart was the most trusted newscaster in America.
Classic book club. I second that. Though on fiction, I’m a moron, so I sure would like a moderator who can guide me through all the stuff I miss when I read good novels on my own.
Moral authority, that is funny.
We got no class
We got no principles!
It doesn’t matter what O said. It won’t be done. As for teachers’ living wage, dontcha know that state & local govt employees are responsible for all the ills of the U.S.?
OMG, looking at this coming weekend’s book-tv schedule, here’s a must-miss one (unless you’re a masochist).
Ok from my perspective your a moral authority:) I know I’m not as good as I can be. But still even people like me have to say something about the Torture Bush did.
When even the Sinners feel Morally Outraged you know the Devil is in the House.
Can I be Mod if we do a Sci Fi book club of Dune? please please please!
I won’t be there. SciFi is sooo not me. But enjoy.
i was bummed to have to miss stiglitz last weekend, but saw that you made it (haven’t read the thread yet, just glanced at it).
The Mars series from Edgar Rice Burroughs is about the only scifi I have enjoyed. I am still missing book 11 in case anyone has an extra!
In ancient China writers criticizing the government who wanted to get past the censors and keep their heads would often set tales of government misdeeds on paper and just say the previous dynasty did this.
Think of some Sci Fi the same way, the Spice is oil. The Harkonens us? The various Nobel houses warring in the book are our own inbred Elites, The Bene Gesserit a Female religious order the Catholic Church, Paul the hero as Lawerence of Arabia.
The book is old but its truth remains we must posses the Spice/Oil.
old little gray cells need morning coffee. off to make some…..
Where were the rest of the SC justices? I know ONE has to stay behind, in case of … something. But were there only 5 there? Where was Clarence? Scalia? And the others missing? Never mind — I don’t wanna know.
Not saying there isn’t a lot of good content in scifi, and interesting to read your take on it. For me, though, it’s so opaque that I just can’t get through it.
Listen to an African American Democrat speak? That would be funny.
Agreed we all prefer what we prefer for our own reasons.
The Hororable Clarence Thomas was following Major Garrett’s bit.ly links. And I’m suckling snide syrup.
Wondered where you were.
Unlike some one else, Stiglizt worked his way thru every question he could get to (was behind about 20 or 30 comments when it ended, but can’t help that). Very diligent. I enjoyed it very much.
Sorry dawg, the religious stuff doesn’t resonate over here. . .but you go ahead.
I would love to see Alito’s reaction when he sees how history will describe this ruling. Good rulings make news this however will be torn apart if we win and if the GOP wins you just know they won’t mention it all:)
Much like race relations used to be or class relations now things you are ashamed about do not get mentioned.
And no matter which side wins Morals are the same some things are never talked about in society because they can’t handle the truth.
Some things are talked about by one group while the other group lies and forms constantly shifting justifications.
The Lake is all about tolerance:)
I did not listen to the speech. He was not going to offer much, anyway. He shot his wad in the first year and all he really came to say was, “we’re going to tough this out together. Me, in the White House. You, in the Out House.”
Except for those “we” disagree with.
And Josh Marshall says that Chris Matthews’ comment is why he likes the guy so much. And to think, I really used to like that site.
We still let them talk we just argue with them…. nobody ever said we were a peaceful group.
Alito obviously thought the brilliant reasoning of the Roberts court, seen here beginning at 6:41, was being unfairly characterized.
WETSU
Judge Ginsberg looks awfully frail. When Obama does nominate someone to replace her or the pissed-off Stevens, we will be subjected to endless sermons from Republicans about “judicial activism”.
I am praying that Roberts, who seems so put out about his paycheck, decides to take up one of the many lucrative job offers he must have at prestigious DC law firms. In the meantime, don’t give this SOB a raise.
I think of us arguing as the Socratic Method in action…the Socratic Method as Practiced by Moe, Larry and Curly.
Selective Enron accounting used to justify why the boss gets more money than the worker. Accounting based on Imaginary profits.
I did too.
What happened?
Also, you get one free speech for being a person; one free speech for being a person running a corporation; one 1/1000th free speech for being a shareholder in another corporation; etc.
It did occur to me that, if they ever reinstitute the draft, this ruling should allow us to draft Halliburton and others, rather than award huge non-competitive contracts.:)
Why would we want to? They got paid beaucoup bucks and still fucked up everything they touched.
The cost of their fucking up would be much less.
We already know A is not an honest man….sorry.
Those so called “liberals” in the corporate media are willing to take the dive at the expesnse of the American people for the fame and riches they are promised. They are every bit, if not more, a problem for the lack of the U.S. moving forward than reactionary Republicans.
excellent! except that it doesn’t give me the opportunity to form opinions based on the questions not answered *g*. i’m glad you liked it and selfishly am glad you were there to ask questions. i’ll read the thread through soon.
So when do corporations get the vote?
Taxation without representation!
Actually, I hthnk the entire SCOTUS is present.
The “one stays away” is a member of the cabinet does not go to the SOTU in case if something bad happens, there is someone remaining to “head up” the government.
(With an acknowledgement to West Wing for the reminder)
American corporations are full of non-American citizens(foreigners) in positions of influence such as the board of trustees, shareholders and high ranking executive positions. Does anyone seriously think these companies will not take advantage of this opportunity and start buying elections to serve their interests?
Apparently Justice Alito and his crew are smarter than all the other justices of the past 85 years. What an arrogant old man.
Anyone know who the blond bob in the right hand corner is sitting by the SCJ’s?
It would be interesting to know just who that happens to be.
Wasn’t that just a stunning and childish display by Alito?? So glad FDL brought attention to it.
The Roberts Court will now rightly, and deservedly, have a special place in the Youtube Hall of Shame.
Well done Obama! That’s the fearless guy I voted for.
OMG. In a nutshell, what’s wrong with BookTv.
When I didn’t have cable for several years, one of the things I missedmost was BookTV. When I started it again, eagerly waited for the weekend — and was stunned by the proportion of RW books and RW authors and sessions at RW locations. Even bookfairs seemed to concentrate on booths of publishers like Regnery.
So when my cable co. moved CSPAN2 off basic cable to a higher tier, I wasnt as disappointed.
Agree. It could be both will be replaced this year and it scares the hell out of me who Obama will nominate and how much the Dems would fight for a Progressives if they are even nominated.
Thank you for the link. Here’s one for you. See especially around the 39:00 mark
