New videos from The Devil Makes Three and Laura Marling.
What’s on your mind tonight?
Aloha, ES…! ;-)
Evening CT.. heard from a friend who is considering moving off of the big island due to toxic fumes. You having trouble in your neck of the beach too?
Is this where everybody went? Hey, ES.
Interesting group of “related posts” tonight. Those are automated, aren’t they? What on earth is in your post that brought up the “boys who rape” piece?
Sometimes it can be brutal when the trades aren’t blowing…! Your friend lives on the Kona side…?
Hi tej, I have no idea how that works. But I sure am glad that title pops up to remind folks.
Don’t know… on some Buddhist type of retreat / monastery I think. Friend of a friend saw him in the grocery store here this week.. so it’s second hand info for me.
Probably Wood Valley in Ka’u…! I met the Dalai Lama(awhile ago)there when he visited the Tibetan Lama that resides there…!
Folks…
Wow I would love that.
hi ES, thanks for the music.
Obama is doing all he can. Who has a suggestion for him to go further?
ES!
“The Devil Spoke”? on SOTU night?
what are you trying to say? :)
Evening Margot… glad you liked it. Couple of really good ones tonight…)
LOL
It’s amazing how many devil songs are being penned these days. I’ve noticed it for several months.
McJoan agrees.
Love the Laura Marling, ES!
Yeah.
Hi emerson. I need to listen to more of her work for sure.
Loo Hoo, I liked the part about getting equal pay for women, too.
Guess I disagree. He can stop blowing off his friends and the progressives and the people who voted for him and stop sucking up to the buttheads we’re angry with. For starters.
O can withdraw Bernacke and appoint STiglitz…
He can drive the health care reform bill with a public option and/or single payer…
He can stop rubberstamping odious Bush policies…
Channeling Hugo Chavez and his remarks after Shrub left the UN podium…! ;-)
They will need it in order to buy insurance which might actually cover their medical needs.
Hey, I don’t mean to argue with ya, but while the piece McJoan quotes is all well and good, part of what we agree is Obama’s skill at the “soaring rhetoric,” I can’t help thinking, well, yeah, and when are you going to break with the Bush policies on detention and presidential power, like, to declare somebody an enemy combatant, or “okay to kill” (see earlier posts today, EW, I think).
If he would talk about that, and take some real action on that, I’d feel a lot better about him.
Especially, if he would actually make some effort to get Dawn Johnsen cnfirmed, like making phone calls and twisting arms.
My biggest disappointment has been his passivity on every issue, except the bad ones (like the Pharma deal); his failure to call up the Blue Dogs and the other obstructionists and insist that they do the right thing.
Seems like the rare occasions when he does that are for exactly the wrong issues, and then I just want to cry in frustration.
So, no, I respect your right to your opinion, but I really don’t think he is doiing all he can. Sad, but that’s where I am now.
Ahhhhh, so we’re taken this party upstairs, have we?

Dayam, The ‘Who-Dat-gate’ is resembling Watergate with each passing day…!
Evening PPDCUS
Ha! I figured if they didn’t they would soon be recruited.
Sharkbabe spoke for me – days ago and minutes after the speech tonight.
hey ES
Well, he can blow off people…but how can he blow off people who voted for him? I thought he did a pretty good job tonight.
Ouch. That’s a little harsher than I might have put it…
But then, Sharkbabe is nothing if not direct.
for Loo Hoo again – at 32, honest, the fact that he has been blowing off the people who voted for him for the whole year is exactly why we’re all so frustrated with him. Blowing off his own base seems to be precisely his game plan.
Do you really not think that’s true?
Highlight of this evening is Tavis Smiley’s hour long interview with Hillary Clinton in her role as Secretary of State.
The first comment outta the gates: “Well, if this is illustrative of how the CIA trains and recruits future spies, is it any wonder the US is in the state it is in?”
Certain irony that Dai was being groomed by the FDD/PNAC crew…!
Those are the real individuals whom should already be behind bars…! 8-(
Yeah, what you said.
I posted earlier tonight, to go on record before SOTU, that I think he’s a frickin’ idiot. His political strategies for getting the mandates through aren’t working, and perhaps they aren’t supposed to. Either way, it sucks.
I so agree. The economic issues are altogether different than the torture issues. He has not been true to American values on torture, and this needs to be addressed. If not by the WH, at least by the press.
Hi loo hoo. I didn’t watch. Because, by now, it didn’t matter to me if he gave a great speech. Time to walk the walk. But that’s just me.
I agree, dosi
These guys are being fast-tracked ala Rehnquist, Atwater and Rove. It would be nice if they were prosecuted.
Exactly…! No amount of lipstick will cover up the fact it’s still a pig…!
I did see one snippet when the goopers stood to applaud when O said he was open to new ideas on health care. I think they were applauding another opportunity to rake in lobbyist dough.
It’s all a much more corrupt system than I could have believed was possible in America.
I’m so blown away.
My post — end of the previous thread lays out four distinctions essential for the republic’s survival. Obama, his closest advisors, and biggest campaign contributors are absolutely blind and deaf to them.
It was pretty tame for sharkbabe.
gtg pups. love you all.
More like ‘The stupidest man’ Feith, Perle, etal…!
be well, dosido
Watched both vids.
LEFT COAST! Devil Makes Three! Love them, love them, love them.
Marling! Wow, a whole lot of Dylan’s ‘Masters Of War’ in that song.
Great music! Thanks ES!!!!
Wassup Puppers, any Disgruntleds in here? *G*
Aloha, dosido…!
I hope you don’t still feel bashed on, Loo Hoo. We arrange ourselves along quite a spectrum from lib to rad to extremely rad here at FDL, but we can usually debate and disagree on issues, because we start from a similar base.
I was personally disheartened this evening, as a new Facebook user, when visiting the pages of my favorite cousin and her husband, to find my worst fears confirmed – they are not just Republican, they identify as “Christian,” (we were raised “Lutheran,” I fear “Christian” means something different today); my cousin’s favorite books listed were 3 out of 5 sillly “Christian” books like “The Shack,” and her husband’s associations/organizations list began with “Stop Obamacare Now.”
Sigh. I was happier not knowing, just avoiding talking politics with family. Now I know, and I’m not sure it’s a good thing that they have access to my page. They may learn things they would rather not know, from their point of view.
So, my substitute family is right here, and I’m so glad it exists, and we can “talk.” And disagree sometimes.
What’s so strange to me.. is Landreiu is a republicans best friend in that Lieberman way.
Why mess with her at all? It’s just so stupid on every level.
LOL. True, true.
Hello you half fascist appeaser. /s
Thought you would like the tunz.
Isn’t it? That’s the biggest part of the mystery of these weirdos.
I’m guessing they have no idea what her positions are, just that she has a ‘D” after her name.
Much like the SOTU responder who apparently mentioned several things that Obama/Congress oughta do, that they’ve already done. They are impervious to fact or reality.
Further? He could steer left for a year and STILL not get us back to center!
I’m not against him, given what the Pugs would offer . . . but I’m not FOR him, and want pressure on him to move increasingly left on ALL issues and fronts.
Antiwar, bring them ALL home, NOW!
Jobs, CREATE WPA, NOW!
Reforms, HCR, fully single payer! Now! (I’ll take vibrant PO)
Reforms, Glass Steagall, end Anti Trust exemptions, regulate banking finance, break up too big to fail.
Fire Rahm, Geithner, Summers, and entrenched fucks who support corporate interests.
Hire and promote Liz Warren.
Get Black Swan and Dr. Doom into his admin, NOW!
That’s just a START of a prog wish list . . . ;-)
Well said.
I voted for Barack Obama, not Barack W Bush, which is what we’ve gotten so far.
I think that the corproate DEMS rule and that the presidential candidate that won was not a big concern as long as they were coporatist. They knew what we would be getting more of the same.
Hi ES and CT the Colunbian escalation is probably a violatiion of the “Monroe Doctrine” somehow. Any case that is Shock Doctrine.
Oh, heavens. Hope all is well with your family! But even those of us on the left have different opinions. I thought Obama did a great job tonight, and many here thought he was a flop. Where to go???
Columbia, Honduras, Yemen… Iran rhetoric. The Priest article on US Soldiers killing American citizens today!
I am soooo appalled.
Aw, thanks. I like it here. ;)
ES and I are fellow Naderites… I suppose that puts us at the extremely rad side of the spectrum…! Or maybe not…! Thoughts, ES…? ;-)
I agree on all count except this:
Only cuz I don’t get it.
Aloha, bb…! Did you watch the SOTU…?
Wow, take that linkage and use it with the fuck vid loon and his work AGAINST ACORN!
Talk about buried moles from BushCo.
But as I said elsewhere today, the dude thought too much of himself, post ACORN, and got his ass on the line for a ten year fed prison sentence!
I love it!!
Great linky, CT, thanks so much!
Nah, stay. Where to go, indeed? We really are quite a spectrum here. Not everybody thought he was a flop – but lots of specific disagreements.
The big issue for most of us who are unhappy, I think, is that we no longer can be made happy just with the lovely speeches. We’ve been waiting for action, and not getting it. That’s the big disconnect.
If he would live up to his speeches, most of us here would be reasonably happy with him. IMO.
It is a diverse spectrum of opinion here.
Nader?……Eeeewwww….
Sorry, I admired the man for years, but he lost me completelly a few years ago, and not just because of the run for Pres.
Okay, suppose, hypothetically, Obama could accomplish everything he wanted to.
How would it be at variance from the reactionary agenda that is embodied by and encompassed in his economic team?
Liberal intellectuals want Obama to embrace the world…liberally. But in his heart of heart he strikes me as a conservative…a solid contender [like Bill Clinton] to be a lifelong advocate of the Bilderberg agenda.
Which is to say he will generally embrace liberal [and libertarian] positions regarding most social policies…and with respect to individual liberty…but with respect to meat and potato economic and foreign policy he is a champion of both Wall Street and the military industrial complex.
Them too. Another unmistakeable thug twist is provided by the son of the acting DA in Louisiana being one of the four
No really, I am not. I am thankful he was on the ballot in order for me to be able to vote No to the rest of the choices over the years. But I was always a registered Democrat until a year ago.
Frankly i wish Socialists would get their act together… we must swing the overton window real far, real hard, as soon as humanly possible.
The conservative economics in the O speech tonight horrified me. I used to just find it disturbing.
I sure would be happy if Obama were able to accomplish his goals. I blame the senate though. They’re fuckers of the first degree.
Well, that’s where I was a few months ago – now I don’t think his goals are what we thought they were.
And I’m not at all sure I want him to accomplish his actual goals.
See ES’s post above yours; conservative economics? Yeeesh. I know this “cut the deficit” crap in the midst of a recession, when what’s needed is MORE government spending, is pretty horrifying to me, too.
I’d love to be thrilled by him again, but not expecting it.
You can’t THINK too far ahead for your FULL efforts.
You DO think past, present, and future to plan for the worst and hope for the best.
But dumping out now, on anything, means you let the GOP take over again, now, and in ’10 and ’12.
I’m assuming, ES you don’t REALLY want THAT!
So, we deal with what we have, we hold feet to fires daily (yeah I know hard work ain’t it) and we look for other ways to fight this beast of corporate facism that owns our country top to bottom.
A progressive convention, was mentioned in my recent rant What Do We Do . . . I really liked that, a convention of all progs and prog leaders to discuss, WHAT to do . . . and build a framework, a position statement, and start working to implement it, be it political, social, or a combo of both.
Doing nothing is not an answer, trading Obama for Palin or worse is not an answer, trading our dem’s for pubs in ’10 is not an answer I want to live with.
Finding progs to run, and hope they don’t get corrupted, that’s a start. Rid ourselves of BlueDogs, that’s a start.
But a better start, a MUCH better start, would be to rouse the masses and demand their action in the streets in opposition to the corporate facism at hand. In a peaceful, manner, of course.
And use THAT to pressure dem’s, and as a springboard for a convention, a third party, and bringing along more prog candidates . . . . and legislation, and Supreme Appointments.
Hard work, hoss, hard work, that goes long beyond our lifetime, but if done right, sets the tone for KNOWING this is bigger than NOW, or us, our our lives . . . and that shit’s a hard sell to folks, now.
Except for the fact that, folks are fucked and screwed any way but loose and free and happy.
And THAT’S what we have going for us . . . people are pissed. Time to bring them to the fold!
Well, I did caucus for Obama…! ;-)
Obama has distinguished himself in one respect — as the fastest presidential descent into lame duck status with the highest popular approval rating in American history.
The former measures the gap between his rhetoric and his actual accomplishments. The latter is a function of the huge block of independent voters who saw him as saviour from a third Cheney/Bush term.
This is an abject failure on two levels:
1) It is so insufficient in the face of the nation’s challenges as to threaten the entire system.
2) It is the fool’s errand to build the Emperor’s New Re-election Campaign on how much worse it would have been if Palin was changing McCain’s diapers while running the country behind the scenes.
I refuse to let the fear of republicans play any role in my decision making. Fear is not the place to work from.
I accept you differ with me on that, but I long passed negotiating my opinion on that point.
But you should sympathize because no matter how I vote the corporatist neo fascists have always won.
Well, this has been lovely catharsis tonight – truly time to get myself to bed. Good night, all.
Read all the blogs on it here…did not watch but wanted to know what is posing he keeps coming up with worse policies. He thinks he can deal to the Rethugs for their support. They hammer him and take what he gives them.
I see Obama as a very shallow man. Read Bob Heberts kast tow editorials. Obama is not looking out for the black community let alone the rst of the unemployed. It is always the economy the the consumers need to get some financial daylight before they will drive the econ. As long as banks won’t lend no actuon Jackson.
The bit about Regional Bank won’t work either they are tapped ans strapped with balance sheet requirements. I wish FDL would invite Ian back for snapshot of the next two years. Obama is such a carney.
Every now and then I reread the Federalist Papers just to reassure myself that the Founding Fathers did actually know what our Republic should really look like…! ;-)
Yeah, I have some serious questions about that.
As a pal of mine says, is she lyin low, to run for ’12?
Depsite the grand protestations?
Loo Hoo, masaccio’s post here is why, imo, Bernake must go.
He has no plan at all… and it’s his primary job description.
I agree with Ian. Also the commenter on Taibbi’s blog after Brown’s MA senate win last Tuesday.
Aloha, tj…!
And I agree. Not calling out torture is unforgivable. It’s just a matter of what is possible all at once, I guess.
I really should read them (not just bits and pieces) sometime.
tell you what else should be read… The D party platform.
She was absolutely unequivocal about that. She’s not running for president after completing her four year post as secretary of state. Obama will be the fatally flawed 2012 democratic nominee.
You can read Ian’s blog…! ;-)
I appease NO one but myself!
Yeah, love the music . . *G*
Fire those I named, and all other like them who serve at the corporate interest.
You don’t know it’s impossible when they are intent on making things worse.
Did you read EW’s post today, or Greenwald?
That shit is worse than Cheney.
So true. Talk is talk. Action is action.
And what… Get splinters from all those broken planks…? Thanks, but, No Thanks…! ;-)
I was concerned the election might be tampered with (again.) and was glad there weren’t many reports of tampering in comparison to 2000 and 2004. Why do you think that was? Were the Dems that successful in their preventative strategy? Was the outrage over the Bush regime so pronounced that the thugs simply couldn’t fix that many machines? Or did the MOTU know they could win with either candidate?
Heh… just shows how far away these guys are from the will of we the party people.
Hence my short and long term plans and goals I outlined . . . which eerily parallel FDL’s.
*G*
Bingo… We have a winner…! (taking off the tinfoil hat now) ;-)
You know that’s not going to happen.
Those same corporatist interests will never surrender any of their power. Same with Elizabeth Warren type & scale reforms in finance, credit/debit card, insurance, etc. — anything that really protects consumers, workers and taxpayers.
What? Politicians don’t lie?
Please . . . what she says and what she does, are ALWAYS two different things based on her ability to gain, profit, or get revenge, she’s a politician.
I’ll believe she won’t run when the filing window passes . . *G*
My brother and sis-in-law had to give up on my cousins too. We all went to Big Bear to bond, but the opposite happened.
These are tough times, beyond the economic troubles. Families are being torn apart.
Who and what are you responding to?
Hope you’re right, CT. I used to only have two choices.
Unless Obama pulls an LBJ in the run up to 2012, she won’t challenge him – just my prediction.
Sorry, Larue – My reply button isn’t working tonight. Responding to the comment on Hillary’s future plans after secretary of state stint.
I don’t think she’ll run for office. Maybe she’s push for nomination to the SCOTUS. That would make Pat Robertson join Oral Roberts & James Falwell in purgatory.
I’m with you on all of that!
You’re right, Loo Hoo. Same thing happened when an uncle and a cousin visited from the East Coast.
I bet she doesn’t even want it now. Plus she knows her DLC rhetoric is just as conservative as O’s… she can’t magically pop up suddenly sane enough and still be remotely convincing.
Of course i sit here amazed at how many people are convinced of anything from o tonight. So who knows?
Thanks for the link read his recent post on the Freeze lunacy and the SCOTUS political donation.
I think we need a plan to withstand this depression so we can have the basic needs covered. That may mean some community bonding to establish neighborhood food banks and other services maybe trade boards that have services for trade. Brain storming a little as I do not expect much from the corporatist…we may be on ouur own.
I pray you are right . . . *G* And I get it with the reply button . . . thanks for your comments.
Doesn’t it bother anybody that Obama turned his back on the progressives that elected him? And channeled Ronnie Reagan-omics for an hour? And was all about boosting his poll numbers, at the expense of our children’s future? Excuse me while I throw up in my mouth…
The Corporations own the Supremes, and now we know they own – via the DLC – the White House.
More nuclear plants – oh, baby!!!
I wonder if you’re right, though after tonight’s speech. Could be Obama’s just speechifieng, but it could be that he means it. We’ll see.
A neighbor just bought a milk cow.. we all get our milk on our own now. More and more steps like that around these parts all the time.
It the best milk for 3.00 a week. I was buying half the amount for more than twice the price at the store each week.
Welcome Auduboner, You would love it around my house these days, Can’t count all the eagles filling the sky.
IF she ran, the PUMA’S would be out in force for revenge for her loss to Obama . . . corporate sponsors would have a FIELD day milking that constituency.
And some triangulations could deliver her unto us, once again . . . for more Dem Lite.
Until the day to file passes, I fear her return.
Here’s a great read, with a great ending…!
Sure it bothers me, it all bothers me.
What’s the reality to deal with, when it comes time to vote?
Bad, or worst?
Till progs create a NEW reality, that’s the reality we have for now, for ’10, and likely, ’12.
Till we CREATE a new reality, we work the present reality for all we can, but we DON’T give it up to the Pugs.
Hey ES! Lovin’ your stuff on the “Top Screen” recently! I was lucky to see the Fruit Bats (who’m you showed two nights ago) last night right here in Sacramento. They kick “behind” LIVE, too! Funny that they are a “Sub-Pop” band…grunge is dead…long live the queen!
I actually went ’cause they were recommended by the folks in Two Sheds, who opened for them. Check out their videos…a bit of Cowboy Junkies cum Mazzy Starr. Fantastic show overall!
The Devil Makes Three are also a Sacto’wn group. We have a thriving scene here thanks to a cool radio station out in Davis (KDVS) and enough venues willing to support alternative and non-mainstream acts.
If you get a chance also look into Anton Barbeau and “Bag O’ Kittens” Allyson Second’s new project. Anton is becoming biggish in Europe (he resides in Cambridge) and his domicile acts as a flop-pad for a lot of itinerant Americans on tour o’er there. Allyson has had a lot of collaborations with her husband ex-punk rock icon Kevin Seconds. This is her first time branching out and her stuff is surprisingly different, sort of Sandy Dennyesque with a sprinkle of country. And very “regretful for the Schadenfreude” lyrics.
Families can no longer support pooer sick family members. The financial stresses are not limited to the low income community which is used to going without. Your milk model is a good example of how small neighborhoods can become more sustainable and green. that is where we are heading in the future. Good jobs for elite college grads are hard to find outside the MIC. GOON NIGHT ANd TAKE CARE
Two lines I was thinking of Rahm . . . only he’s hustling for AIPAC and endless war.
Nice hit, Lang is always good for a rebel service members read . . . *G*
Aloha, C’ape… It’s been awhile since I’ve seen ya…! ;-)
Devil Makes Three are from Santa Cruz.
Didn’t know you were here in Sactown . . .
Where did you see Fruit Bats at?
Do you pick? Like the grassy acoustic side of life?
5th String Music Store, Thursday nights, 7-10pm, jam city.
Be prepared to bring a song and lead one . . . *G*
I’ll be there, tomorrow night.
Cinderella Man
Aloha, BB…! Sleep tight…!
*heh* Ya liked that, eh…? ;-)
Oh man, thanks for the breaking tips I will check them all out.. I really appreciate hearing good things are happening out your way. It’s been kind of quiet on the California new music front lately. At least it seems so from my net searching.
I’m not expecting any major shift in Obama’s actual executive branch policies or tactics, or Rahm’s DLC blue dog whoring with the republicans. Emmanuel’s angling for co-chairmanship of one of the five bailed out mega-banks after leaves WH COS to cash in his chips. Like Phil “the destroyer of real wealth” Graham to UBS after deregulating the entire U.S. financial system.
Who knows about Obama’s activities in the next year? Guess we’ll see.
Crashing.
Me too.
Good night everyone.
Hey – the reply button magically worked!
I also think Hillary can see Ian’s prediction that the entire system is going down for regular people. The Clintons will shuttle back and forth from their place in Westchester County, NY to Martha’s Vineyard in between their jet setting lifestyle. She’s too smart to stick her head into this grizzly bear’s open jaws. I could see her as UN high commissioner for women’s and children’s issues, as well.
night all – be well
Aloha, ES and Loo Hoo…!
I wonder how many independents and progressives received this email tonight after the SOTU, and thought — isn’t that special!
===================================
Heh, Yeppers, just checked my inbox and viola there it is…! ;-)
lol
No not a picker…Fruit Bats played at Luigi’s Fun Garden down near where they had the ice rink set up. Lot’s of good shows put on by the “Cool As Folk” guy from Davis.
OT ….Very sad loss Howard Zinn R.I.P.
Holy Fuck. That is Plouffe: on the job!
Excuse me ~ I have to run out for more popcorn.
