No, you CAN'T have pastrami on white.
Harold Ford’s “I can’t believe it’s not a campaign!” campaign is rapidly becoming a caricature of itself:
During the roughly half-hour interview, Ford turned on the full Southern charm, repeatedly referring to the Post’s Fred Dicker as “Mr. Dicker” despite repeated requests that he drop the formality.
The two bantered about the difference between New York and Tennessee, with Dicker poking fun at Ford for pronouncing “smear” (as in: “I’ve been the victim of a smear campaign on my position on choice”) as “schmear”, prompting this exchange:
Dicker: “I think schmear is something you put on a bagel.”
Ford: “I’m a little country. I apologize…It’s “smear”, s-m-e-a-r. Y’all talk funny.”
Well-played, Harold! It’s not every ophidian, carpetbagging politician who can apologize to a group of potential constituents by insulting them. Besides, I’m sure some of your best friends are Jews bankers New Yorkers.
In the short time since Ford decided to take a territorial piss on this political tree (as a proxy for his BFFs on Wall Street), we New Yorkers have come to delight in the special kind of tone deaf gaffe-a-liciousness from the Joe Lieberman wannabe from Tennessee.
Take Ford’s latest moronic op-ed in the overly accommodating New York Times, in which he performs the most credible impression of an Underpants Gnome this side of Ben Bernanke. At first blush, you’d swear you were reading The Onion:
First, cut taxes for businesses — big and small — and find innovative ways to get Americans back to work. We can start by giving any companies that are less than five years old an exemption from payroll taxes for six months; extending the current capital gains and dividend tax rates through 2012; giving permanent tax credits for businesses that invest in research and development; and reducing the top corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent.
…
Finally, we need to address budget deficits now rather than waiting for some ideal future economic situation. It’s a good sign that the Obama administration is following the advice of Senators Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Evan Bayh of Indiana and other Democratic fiscal pragmatists who embrace the idea of a bipartisan commission to recommend spending cuts to rein in deficit growth. But we must be sure that the administration and Congress heed the commission’s advice.
Rainbow-colored unicorns and leftover Hanukkah gelt for everyone! Remind me again what this meshuggenah (accent is on the second syllable, Harold) is doing to earn a million dollars a year at Merrill LynchBoA? Cutting deficit spending and taxes equals job growth? I may be easily confused by sudoku puzzles, but even I can see that Ford’s math and logic skills are nothing more than nareshkeit (I’ll let you fend for yourself on that one, buddy). As Yglesias puts it: “To make the deficit smaller, you can’t also make revenues smaller.”
Come on, Harold, we all know that the New York Times is providing you a megaphone with which to whistle to the dogs of Wall Street. What do you take us for — shnooks?
Harold Ford is “a little country”. And Goldmine Sacks’ Lloyd Blankfein, that gonif, is running a credit union.

Ford! A Lieberman type but dumber.
Watertiger!
Harold almost makes me glad I only have to deal with Montana politicians. Almost.
Can we just call him Hal?
Dude makes Harold Hill look like a piker.
I can’t believe you are schmearing him, wt
Chopper Harold is nothing if not a putz.
Yoo Hoo! Harold, call me.
He’s toast.
Right down the GOoPer party line: cutting taxes increases revenues. (In theory; they’ve never been able to demonstrate it in practice.)
I bet he doesn’t like lox.
Heh.
I can’t believe this little pissher has gotten as far as he already has, he’s so stupid.
Chopper Harold thinks lox are what city folk put on doors.
and sadly, Obama seems to agree with him.
I think they are just getting ahead of the wave when the SCOTUS approved corporate takeover of America begins.
Post-Citizens, greet your new senator from Wall St.
Doesn’t matter. Corporations will still shelter their money overseas until they can browbeat congress into a tax holiday and bring it back a five percent.
Actually, I believe he is properly the Senator from BoA.
And just wait to see the senator from Insurance and Hegde Funds from CT.
Why quibble? Because it is the only thing left to do?
“Y’all who live north of Wall Street talk funny.”
Wall Street is an ethnicity now? Hmmm. I may have to reexamine my position on bigotry.
I expect that all the other TBTF banks will also want their own senators.
He’s schmerely trying to explain himself.
Or south of Wall St. Gotta redo that NYer cover map of the U.S. Wall St. is ALL of it. There is no place else.
i keep coming back to Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
“There’s some lovely filth over here, Dennis!”
Oh, I pretty sure that there is a place for Exxon and Boeing in there somewhere.
So I get this straight in my mind:
Is Ford a schlemiel, a schlimazel, a schmuck, or just a straight-up putz?
Heh. Or you see the silhouette of the Cayman Islands to the south.
Don’t think there’s a bit of a problem with that. Will merely appropriate taxpayers’ dollars to elect ‘em.
Nah, he’s not a schlemiel – those are are generally hapless loser types.
Definitely a schmuck.
“I love the smell of numbered accounts in the morning…”
I’m all for “putz” because it’s faster to type.
Thank you for the clarification.
I really am beginning to feel like we have been transported back to the early 1930s. Sadly, I doubt we will see the same rise of socialist outrage that scared the elites enough to enact FDR’s programs.
Kinda like my malformed mind picture. Hard to work out all the ramifications PDQ.
All I know is that take advantage of the internet while ye may. It’ll be priced out of your range as soon as corps’ pols eliminate net neutrality.
the economist types are pointing directly to FDR’s 1937 budget freeze that led to the double-dip recession.
And here I thought BUSH was Hoover incarnate.
The supposed elites of today are so stupid they misinterpret the outrage and take a sharp right turn making things exponentially worse.
As I understand it, the schlemiel is the guy who always spills the soup, and the schlimazel is the guy who’s under the soup when it lands. (But I could so easily have it backwards.)
Won’t matter since we will all be working 12 hours a day 6 days a week for $1 and hour after they gut the worker protection laws.
Bush wasn’t that bright.
“Lieberman wannabe…” That’s a phrase that might as well be our epitaph.
“Vote Putz. Vote Ford.”
Has a nice ring to it. Catchy on a bumper sticker.
The corporate wars as they all try to cut the others out should be interesting ….
(But definitely not fun. Except when we get to take on the weakened survivors.)
I really am afraid that we will go the way of Germany in the 1930s if it happens here now.
I admit it — I had to look up ‘ophidian‘
Nice one, WT. Good luck with Harold! And you thought when Laura left DC you’d have nothing to write about anymore! Did you and the WakeUpWorld crew invent the Ford candidacy just for laughs?
bingo.
I presume that you are using “interesting” in the Chinese sense.
That too. Raise the price of the internet while lowering wages. A winning combination.
I’ve never been able to figure out if he’s naturally that dim or if it’s the result of all the partying he did when he was younger.
Corps will collude. No need to worry on their account.
Yes.
How was your day?
He really is tailor-made for it, no? Maybe a new show: Gaffe-ing Out Loud?
Never seems to occur to them to ask who will buy their shit if they cut all our wages the way they want to.
Oh, and DrDick, I didn’t get a chance to send you my condolences.
:-(
I think you’ve got it right, actually. My understanding is that schlemiel is more pitying than schlimazel and more affectionate (by far) than schmuck. Putz, on the other hand, trumps them all for downright offensiveness.
I’m going with Putz.
Howdy pups.
I don’t know but I am really worried. I have a child who was born disabled, have almost gone broke trying to keep him alive, and now the only safety net that exists for him will be gone long before he gets it. (even though we are going broke buying meds we don’t qualify for help because we make too much money)
Yes, AFAIK schmuck and putz are never used in a friendly way.
Ford could be a dork, but I don’t think he’s that smart.
It’s beginning to look like we’re heading in that direction, although the packaging will likely be much more glossy…well…the “on camera” part, anyway…
To some extent Ford epitomizes the typical 21st Century American pol, dumber than owl shit, accomplished at nothing, desperately hopeful that he can fail his way to the top.
Interesting you should bring this up. It is, and has been, my major concern about the economy.
Pretty good for the first day of the semester if a bit hectic as usual. Still missing my kitteh and had a delightful bout of residual concussion effects just in time for my afternoon class. Fortunately just go over the syllabus and send them home the first day of MWF clases. Freaking classes are all packed and people still wanting into them. Signed in four more for my online Anthropology of Gender class today (which made the cap over a month ago).
I had a thought about the Citizens United decision and corporate spending. Correct me if I’m wrong but, if forgien people cannot contribute to campains, will these “american” corps whose headquarters are a nameplate in the Bahamas find themselves shit out of luck?
Colbert will be taking about Ford’s NY Senate run. Ford might even be the guest. Colbert wasn’t clear about it in the intro.
Was it Sinclair Lewis or Upton Sinclair who said that when fascism comes to this country it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the Bible?
The exact type that seems to succeed.
I’m sorry about your kitteh, Dick. Glad the first day went okay for you. I’m trying to get caught up from losing a day to MLK day.
Oh God. I am so sorry to hear that. I do understand. My youngest grandson has cerebral palsy (he is fine now) and my son had to turn down several raises at his job so he could still qualify for medicaid for him. I think about this stuff and I really understand Che Guevara.
because all of their equally stupid friends and colleagues are now heading up corporations and can channel the money to them.
There’s a physics instructor on my train. His class sizes have been increased from 50 to 60, and there’s a waiting list for one of them.
Sounds about right to me. Our economic elites really are profoundly stupid, venal, and generally evil.
Oliver Stone?
Oscar-winning US filmmaker Oliver Stone says Adolf Hitler was ‘enabled by Western bankers’
By Michael Casey (CP) – 15 hours ago
BANGKOK, Thailand — Adolf Hitler was a psychopath and a monster but rose to power thanks to big business leaders and other supporters who appreciated his vow to destroy communism and control workers, Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone said Monday.
Stone, who is working on a 10-part documentary on the 20th century titled “The Secret History of the United States,” said the German dictator was “enabled by Western bankers” and managed to “seduce” Germany’s military industrial complex.
~~~EDITED FOR LENGTH HERE to remain within Fair Use guidelines~~~
“JFK” ridicules the Warren Commission’s conclusion that Oswald acted alone and suggests a massive conspiracy.
Lewis, I think. He missed out on the financial institutions and ‘too big to fail’.
U.S. determines foreign elections. Turnabout is fair play.
No. TPM had a nice piece about how this completely opens things up to foreign money channeled in through corporations.
Sinclair Lewis, I think. Upton Sinclair was that meat guy…
{{{{tbsa & Dr.Dick}}}}
Word! We
arewere middle class working people. Went to school, paid our loans, played by the rules. Make to much money for help but not enough to buy meds for the boy, and pay all of our bills. What little we have been able to put in the 401K virtually vanished in a span of 3 days. I don’t even know what to do these days…TPM, btw, has been particulary blind about most of O’s failings. Trapped in the veal pen.
Gotta bail, Pups. Nite.
heh,he was an Iraq cheerleader iirc
I teach an intro class every semester that runs 170-230 depending on the classroom they assign me. My 300 level race and ethnicity class runs 50+ every year, as does the 300 level gender class when it is taught in the classroom (online programs caps classes at 30).
The SF author David Brin has a theory about that
http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2009/12/betrayal-of-smart-sons.html
Seriously though look at the candidates the Democratic leadership is pushing. Gillibrand was no prize and now they are trying to run someone to the right of her in Ford. It is MA all over again in that instead of trying to run candidates who are genuinely popular with voters they go for the most DLC candidate they can find. The dynamic is different in New York I think but this is their strategy. MA taught them nothing.
Spoiler alert. Colbert doing a number on Ford.
Oh Canada………im seriously considering
I can see us turning yards into urban farms, just so we can have food for the eight or ten or fifteen people living there – it’s going to take that many to pay the bills.
Yeah, including a certain Bush.
Vile Pen, you mean. Obama doesn’t need to wear a jock when he plays basketball, he has Josh Marshall happily supporting him.
I work for a school district in California. They have to cut 8 million out of their budget. (37,000 students total in the district) Their solution is to increase class size in K-6 from 20 to 32 per class. Even after they pay the fine for being out of compliance on class size, they still save money cutting the # of classrooms and teachers necessary.
Niters.
But also a socialist with some good quotes.
It’s hard to do; they’re restrictive on who can stay and who can actually get citizenship.
Don’t remember that, but who can keep track.
Colbert just called Ford “butt sniffing”
For me, the canonical history of Nazi Germany is Shirer, Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Shirer pretty much agrees with Stone, although it’s unclear that Shirer would hold Western bankers collectively responsible. On the other hand, they were responsible for funneling money into Nazi Germany.
All right, all right. So I haven’t been keeping track. But as a middle-informed voter, I have now figured it out.
LAUSD is still trying to find ways to balance theirs. Hard when you can’t take out sports, or people with unused (and possibly unusable) teaching certificates.
Yeah, I have noticed that, but they have some pretty good people contributing to the cafe and entertain differing views on those issues. I like what they have to say on a lot of other issues as well.
Night!
yah….too badSenator Presscott,wasnt exposed before we got Poppy and Jr.
i actually lol..ed
And it’s known that a lot of businessmen, and a fair number of the wealthy and well-connected, were sympathetic to, if not actually supporters of, the Nazis. Probably had something to do with keeping labor and minorities in their ‘proper’ places: at the bottom of the pyramid.
ditto
Night all. It’s been real.
Ain’t that the truth?
Difficult conceiving children without at least partial exposure. You suggesting he was a pant-leg dribbler or something of that ilk?
Rise and fall of Brown Brothers Harriman
damn sad Pammy went to her grave with the secrets
Nighters.
Possibly an early example of our American habit of oxymoronic names? I mean, The National Socialist Worker’s Party wouldn’t engage in suppressing trade unions and political parties and …
Oh? They would?
Never mind.
g’nite eCAHN
The thing with foriegn corporations has possibilities. Just think how that meme would play with the teabaggers. Create a website, write a couple of inflammitory articles, then drop a link into the comments thread over at places like Red State. Stand back and whatch it take off. Afterall, those rats aren’t going to fuck themselves.
The only reason we still have sports is because the parents have agreed to foot the bill. Same with music. Funny thing though, everyone and I mean everyone in the district is experiencing cuts except for the upper administration.
Still with the 900 a month care allowance, still got 9% raises. They seem to have an attitude of entitlement. Education in California (I don’t know about other states) has taken a huge cut. My district alone has had to cut more than 22 million in two years alone. Those of you in higher education had better prepare yourself for students who are ill prepared to go to college.
hehehehehehehhe……..oy Babs
Okay, I don’t recognize that piece of the story…
Not to be ironic but, Ford?
They’re already here, tbsa.
Or do you mean they’re going to be worse?
hey IBM,Ford etc
(*snerk* *snicker*)
Dave Niewert has a good quote from Paxton on that over at C&L.
Yeah, we have them as well. It’s going to get much worse.
Parents here have been footing the bill for sports for the past couple decades. Expensive, plus you have to sign the obligatory liability waiver. Kids from poor families need not apply.
Reminds me of one place my sister worked. She said that when they cut the line workers, but not management, it’s time to bail, because it’s going down.
We already have them. Things are bad enough here that they are talking about going to 4 day weeks at the university next year.
Not just Ford. Standard Oil made all sorts of patent license agreements (most notably, tetraethyl lead) with I.G. Farben and other well-connected German firms.
yep. Had them in mind. And Lindbergh, and the earlier Bush.
nigters……..Bee well!
In a city with 18% unemployment there isn’t much of a choice.
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
Which they are you speaking of? U of MT or the local schools? And what do they get with four day weeks?
Nite DrDick..
That’s part of the problem with employment in this country. Workers have long been considered a disposable resource. Overload ‘em, underpay ‘em, use ‘em up, kick ‘em out.
g’nite DrDick
Buenos noches, Dick.
Chinese are using the melamine again…….hey,but they own us
Aloha, Dr. D…! Aloha Ya’ll…! ;-)
Howdy CT.
It saves the school quite a lot of money. My district is not that big but they cut 1 of our staff development days and made it a furlough day. It saved them 890,000. The powers that be view it as a relatively painless way to save a large amount of money.
U of Mt is going to 4 day weeks. And they get reduce energy and heating costs among other savings.
in a few years, they’ll be outsourcing their production to us, because we’ll be able to do it cheaper.
nite dickdoc
Basically, Hawaii has gone to a four day school week… With 17 furlough Fridays to save on teacher’s salaries…! Nobody’s happy… The parents nor the teachers…!
oh my
Holy crap!
OMG, so Sorry. Keep a picto diary going so nobody can claim otherwise. Be tough.
My college has gone to partial four-day week. But we use Friday for colloquia, research and (gag) committee meetings. We also use it to set up help sessions in known problem courses, like Statistics.
im extremely upset about the Dr. Kelly file being closed for 70years in Britan,more and more it looks like the coverup spells my worst thoughts r
Hey,all,
Doing a lurking hit and run. Remind me why Harold Ford is a contender we have to focus on….cause I’m getting scared. Is he the next Scott Brown +naked pictures [edited to remove character which could be confused for html] black? Every frigging blog is talking about Harold Ford sans sex scandal. I’m getting creeped out.
Thanks LooHoo.
They most likely figure that it is better to have the scandal once everyone concerned is safely dead.
made this yesterday,
http://elise.com/recipes/archives/000842pumpkin_bread.php
gonna go have apiece
nite all
I know Mr. tbsa was telling me about that last nite. But we already knew the fix was in.
thoughts and prayers to you,gnite
Lihop………..okay i said it……..really going sleepy now
As a Nets fans I thought Hillary would never recover from her announcement of her Senate candidacy, in which she wore a Yankees hat, calling our local nemesis America’s Team. Somehow she beat the carpetbagger rap, though the image of her in that wealth-drenched topdog’s hat has never left me.
This is a hard city to break into. Ford is a joke. The base will laugh him off. As for Shmeargate, there’s heavy irony in his remark: He’d give anything to be slathered with cream sheese. It’s Very White.
nite sadly…
Being a dark thinker- it’s David Kelly, Mike Connell [cyper-guru], DC Madame Debra Palfrey, DC Madame’s employee and I regret I can’t remember her name, I promise, I will learn it. She should not become nameless.
And who knows how many others.
Oh, the tragedy of Paul Minor’s fate for crossing Karl Rove in his glory. Dan Seigleman.
It’s a tragedy, this next era of the United States of America history. How fucking human !!!
Night eCahn
Has anyone seen newspaperbrat?
Been here all nite have not seen newspaperbrat.
I’m worried about her.
Good night, pups.
What a pashgudnyak
Do you have any means of getting in touch?
I tried facebook, just wondered if anyone else has heard anything.
Yeah, haven’t seen her. I hope you hear from her soon.
Oops, I didn’t realize I did a faux pas. Actually, I can’t remember what I said that was inflammatory. But, that’s not unusual. *g*
My bad. But what does ” edited to remove character that could be confused with html” mean?
Danged, WT, the voice of the Prog Yiddish is strong in yas!
I need to learn more . . . I had a REAL different understanding of ‘meshuggenah’ than you shared!
I remain, a fan of your snark and imaging, and headstands.
Us nonjewish progs could use a translation device to get the snarky of the Yid as you use it, though.
Yes, we are challenged but we praise you to help us in our ignorance . . . ;-)
Thanks, WT . . . *G*
Just when you thought whores in congress couldn’t get any worse, here comes Harold Ford, a Rahm Emmanuel clone.
This is just more Rahmbama theatre.
Harold ford is being set up as a foil to make a very conservative Gillibrand look downright reasonable in comparison.
Kennedy’s tax rate cuts increased revenues.
China’S effective tax rate cuts (moving from complete government ownership of all business) to more free enterprise with personal and corporate tax rates being around 30% for top earners. Look at government revenues in China in 1979 when they were on the brink of total economic failure, and now.
It is tough to prove anythign in a dynamic economy, because you cannot isolate all the factors, but the basis of the laffer curve has validity….at certain inflection points increased tax rates will not lead to more revenue, and at some inflection points decreasing rates will lead to more income.
It is sort of like how Costco sells more Diamonds than Tiffanny, and probably makes more total profit. Tiffany Marks them up 2-3x while Costoco adds only 20%, So a costco Diamond for $2400 would cost $4000-6000 at Tiffany. 10 years ago neither costco nor Bluenile.com were selling diamonds, and the market had high margins. Economists even talked of negative price elasticity in diamonds, where when the price goes up, demand goes up. But that Bluenile sells the most diamonds in America now, and that Costco is #2, also tends to demonstrate that with reduced margins (like reduced marginal tax rates) demand increases.
I know there are counter arguments to the Diamond example, but I donä#t want to get into it.
Point is, that at 100% income tax rate, no one would really be motivated to work more, and at 0% income tax the government woudl see ZERO revenues form that. Where the maximum return is is some point between that.
Good gawd, what the hell was he doing at the DLC for three yrs.?
And, like Obama before him, he haunts the halls of academe.
