Horseshoes, handgrenades — and Bloomberg campaigns? Does “close” count there, too?
There’s no more lucrative campaign business to be in than Michael Bloomberg’s. The wee Mayor bestowed his every-four-year bonuses on campaign staffers after barely winning re-election in a squeaker that was expected to be a blowout:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent $108 million to win a third term, distributed more than $2 million in bonuses to campaign staffers, according to papers filed on Friday with the Campaign Finance Board.
Three top staffers each received $400,000 bonuses, one got $150,000, and 91 others got a sum roughly equivalent to 20 percent of their salaries. The total amount distributed came to $2.4 million, campaign officials said.
I’m sure there’s a disinterested party ready to defend those bonuses, right?
“This was an extremely difficult election cycle for incumbents. Mr. Bloomberg bucked that trend,” said campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson, who received $400,000.
Well, I’m glad that’s cleared up then. I do wonder, though, if Wolfson would have done better financially had his candidate done better than five fucking percent over a candidate practically ignored by the press and the national Democratic party in the face of the hundred-million-dollar candidate. I guess we — and he — will never know.
Hey, Democrats: when Wolfson comes knocking next time, let’s run the other way, okay?

teddy!
Teddy!
Given that Bloomberg works in the finance industry, if he had lost by a blowout, the bonuses would have been even larger.
‘allo, madame
Doctor! How are you?
Teddy!
Doing well. Fell on the ice and concussed myself (one point landing on the back of my head) earlier in the week, but am fine now. Looking at the last week of my winter short course and then starting spring semester next week. Spent the day getting ready for that.
sucks when ya lose that ability to bounce we had when we were kids…
newtie!
Hmmm …. I don’t know, a win is a win. Guy is still mayor and who cares if the win was ugly, last time I checked there were no points given out for style! Those bonuses unlike the ones on wall street were earned, they delivered the third term.
Ow!
Yep. Definitely do not want to repeat the experience. fortunately all the ice has pretty well melted off as the temps are well above freezing and no rain. Weather is being really weird for here.
Well, I have to wonder if Little Mike strays into lame duck territory much sooner with so close a victory. But you are right. It’s a win. I just hope Howard Wolfson stays away from Democratic campaigns now. Check that last link for what I’m talkin’ about.
We are going to have 12 inches of rain in SF in the next seven days.
You mean Wolfson isn’t advising Coakley’s campaign? /s
Yea. Sometimes I tend to stick to the floor until somebody comes by and peels me up.
Suz,
Is it raining there yet. It isn’t storming here at all.
just starting to and the winds are starting to pick up a wee bit… should start to get gnarly around 10pm
We don’t get more than a light rain, which then freezes over. Shouldn’t be getting temps over freezing before March and sure as hell should not be getting rain (lots of snow, but not rain) this time of year.
That would be so nice. We have been so dry this winter that I began to wonder when we would be told to shower with a friend.
does the pacific el nino affect montana?
Bad week for academics. I skidded on a patch of ice Thursday and reinjured my knee. No ligaments actually torn this time, but something was sure as hell strained.
oh noz edp
Maybe you two should move to Florida.
Yep. Very much so. They say it is why we have so little snow this year. Snowpack is 60-70% of normal, which does not bode well for the summer.
Good thinking, then we only have to worry about hurricanes and wingnuts.
It’s a slip & fall pair-a-docs!
Ouch! That is going to hang on for a while. I wrenched my wrist during finals week catching myself to keep from falling on the ice and that is still a bit sore. Fortunately, my head is pretty well cleared up, except for a sore spot on the back.
hahahaha
Bad Teddy.
Ditto.
and gators.
snakes
old farts (I can say that cause I qualify as one)
iguanas falling from trees
Ouch!
lol!
Glad you’re recovering quickly. I’ve got a good range of motion and little swelling, but the knee is so slow and stiff that I end up lurching around anyway.
EvilDrLurch.
Yeah. That stuff hurts and heals slowly. I still can’t lift too much weight with my wrist.
that’s a great band name
I often thank my lucky stars for my low center of gravity. Came as part of a set with low IQ and low self esteem.
So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
You rang?
Hey, at least it is a matched set.
Ed. this is to ratfood at 38.
S’why I’m a great dancer, although people look at me funny when I do it in the checkout lane.
I looked at the list of Golden Globe nominees in Lisa’s post and I hadn’t heard or seen a single entry until I got all the way down to 30 Rock and The Office. I fear my pop culture illiteracy is going to result in my being stripped of U.S. citizenry.
I was afraid to even look.
iirc the last movie i saw was shrek 2. i wudda been kicked out years ago if there was a pop culture requirement
Well, at least I’m not chasing kids of my grass. The electrified perimeter takes care of that…
My pop culture illiteracy provides many amusing moments for my students (10th graders).
Evenin’, all.
I live in a second floor apartment, so that doesn’t bother me.
I intend to see Inglourious Basterds, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. That Brad Pitt is the bee’s knees. Do the kids still say bee’s knees? :-)
Mine as well.
Rented that a while back and really enjoyed it.
Howdy Ron.
I remember my dad saying I wouldn’t like Jimi Hendrix when I was his age. He was mistaken but now I can understand why he didn’t like Jimi Hendrix.
(in best deniro) you’re asking me?
i am a pop culture failure starting around the 80′s….
23 skidoo too!
Thank goodness. That means I shouldn’t stand out too much in my Stutz Bearcat and (faux) fur coat.
Think I will toddle off. Take care all.
coo coo ka chu
Nite Dr. Dick
Mine had never heard of Hendrix, though some had heard of Zeppelin and Floyd. No Yes fans, to my disappointment.
G’nite, Dr. Dick. Soft landings to you.
Some friends worked on this show when it was filmed in NM Bearcats
g’nite dr dick
G’nite DrDick.
Remarkable how quickly our touchstones fade into cultural irrelevance, isn’t it?
BtW, ratfood, I want to publicly salute you for your heroic service to common sense that took place in the Seminal threads this weekend.
Hail, ratfood!
how cool margot
I have that sitting by the TV for tomorrow morning; chill out with coffee and a movie morning. I watched the documentary “Man On Wire” yesterday with my parents. We all thought about it the rest of the day. And beyond.
It’s an incredible story of a wire-walker who walked the World Trade Towers back when they weren’t completely finished but as high as they were going to go. Frigging amazing ! Guerilla events.
I’m looking forward to a homegrown chicken egg, fried, with toast and Inglorious Basterds tomorrow morning. I have so earned it !
Wow, that must have been a fun gig.
Thank ya, though I’m confident any heroism was inadvertent. Any thread in particular? I actually felt a little guilty because Jason’s blaming we the lowly for the plight of Democrats kind of pissed me off.
It riled me too, but I stayed out of it, as there were a number of people calling Jason out on it far better than I could have.. There were any number of threads, and you were prominent in several. Thanks again.
They moved fake rocks, etc. Got paid a LOT.
Happy to be of any service, such as it was.
A toast to bright people such as those found at FDL and to brighter days.
Goodnight, all.
Sure is busy in all the FDL venues lately, eh?
g’nite rat
lotsa new folks lately — the live blogging has brought in a lot of new readers
Thanks to you and Marcy for your extraordinary work, Teddy.
You are largely responsible for that. What a week. It was like being there at the trial.
teddy — you resting up your fingers for tuesday?
Well, not really. I spent the morning helping egregious find links for the new Witnesses section on the Prop 8 Hub. And then I’ve had to check in with my Tweeps and Facebook friends. All the things I can’t do when liveblogging!
don’t forget to do your finger exercises (remember those from 1st grade penmenship lessons) to stretch before ya start in
I really liked Helen Zia’s testimony. Very vivid.
“Sure is busy in all the FDL venues lately,eh?”… Yes it is. I’ve just realized that a lot of the Seminal posts are generating comments as well as overlapping front posts.
Fucking mods rock!!!
We should take up a collection for Mods Night Out and thank them.
I’ve even abandoned the “C” word in respect for their contribution. That’s big. *g*
on behalf of the mod squad, thanks for that abandonment openhope (laughing) its been a week for kevlar and nomex for the backstage crew
‘night, ratfood. You da rodent.
Dear Suzanne, you are welcome.
I had a bad experience with hand grenades… About 8 years ago, I was a Range Safety NCO on a hand grenade range… Needless to say, a young pup wanted to watch the explosion after having just thrown it…! He ended up face first in the dirt when I noticed this sudden fascination… After, I threw him down, I threw his sorry arse off the range….!
P.S. Sarah Palin is a “c”. See, it just doesn’t pack the punch. Got an alternative word to describe, probably a “male” oriented word? She’s what? A prick? A cocksucker? A numb nuts? No real Cajones? A motherfucker?[can we say that?] Or is she a Bimbo, a Barbie, a toy?
I’m being good. That doesn’t mean I’m being pliable. Just not creating problems through semantics; male dominated thus male oriented semantics in a mass media environment. Power to the women !! Power to the women right now .
Sorry, I’d like to be a polite little bitch for the mods sake, because I truly bow down to the incredible mods….sorry.
The $108 million Bloomberg spent on the campaign was a heck of a stimulus for the cratering media industry in NYC, saved a ton of jobs. In return the local media did not make a big fuss about term limits.
*laughing* not a problem openhope — late late night is upstairs
((( mods )))
Yes, women can be just as talented as men in denigrating the female gender. We can be proud about that.
So here are some interesting dollar spent per votes factoids:
2000 Bush: $ 3.81
2004 Bush: $ 5.91
2008 Obama: $10.72
2001 Bloomberg $ 75.85
2005 Bloomberg $111.74
2009 Bloomberg $185.11
2003 Newsom $43.51
2005 Villaraigosa $22.47
Capitalism has figured out how to make money off campaigns, and the campaign industry has arisen with its own interests in mind other than necessarily electing the candidate. We saw Newsom’s operation suck the juices out of their tarnished golden boy to leave the dried husk to coast to the finish line in SF in 2012.
