About Firedoglake
Aloha, Suz…!
aloha ct — how’s paradise
Another gorgeous balmy night…! ;-)
warm here tonight — still 48 outside — same temp it was at sunset. tomorrow nite we may get hammered with a windstorm coming up from the south – hence the warm temps
Reminder of the great humanist Martin Luther King at C&L http://crooksandliars.com/
What a wonderful person he was, full of grace and courage. Where have all the stron men gone long time passing…gone to the graveyard one by one Paul Wellstone, Bobby, Jack Kennedy, Malcolm X, King and Ghandi mostly men off peace. And Jesus and a long list of peacemakers.
How can todays leadership be made to strive for yheir excellence?
Hello. It’s 41 here in Reno, which is warm for 10 p.m. You’re not that much warmer CT. And I am wondering if the Oregon coast is getting rain and all?
Batten down those hatches…! ;-)
hiya Suz
When you identify the Moses of this age, let us know.
hey bb — how’s the trip?
A tad bit, M’dear…! ;-)
73°F | °C
Current: Overcast
Wind: E at 7 mph
Humidity: 71%
got 2″ yesterday — just misty today
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay tonight?
I wonder why more men and women don’t choose to strive and work toward the same goals as those men you mention.
Forecast is serious, Suz — from Big Sur to Santa Cruz Mtns, they’re calling for 12 inches of rain with 3 inches in the valleys.
makes me glad i’m not on the creek on the mt — i remember love creek (happened before i moved up there and i checked out landslide risks when i did)
Yes Suz and CT we also have three back yo back 50 year storms coming in this week. Fire department sent our a flooding . How are you all health wise?
Love Creek and Loch Lomond in 1982, eh.
yup — i’d lived in the sf bay area since 65 — grew up hearing about the santa cruz mts and the russian river each winter on the news and weather
doing good bb — still adjusting to the upper plate but it is coming along nicely
Pretty exhausing and pretty sucesssful’ I am back in my routine and recovered nicely. with me and we came back with great stuff to put into our environmental lawsuit
My attorney attended. The county was busted by the Coastal Commission for some of their lies ar least. Still have to roll the rock up hill.
so you are back home in time for the storms headed your way. you prepped for flood? are you in a floodplain?
are you on the west coast too?
stormy weather
50 year storms? Ugh. I heard from a friend who lives up at Tahoe that Sacto was expecting 20 inches of snow and that they were predicting 10 feet of snow in the mountains. I thought he was exaggerating… but since then I’ve heard variations of that theme. Wonder what that will mean in Reno… depends on temp whether we get the precip in rain or snow, or if the rain shadow will show up.
something to do with the jet coming straight into ca instead of its usual northern track. has something to do with the el nino (or is la nina) weather cycle
That altitude, they get a foot of snow for each inch of rain that falls at lower elevations
it is the el nino… here’s an article about the hammering cal is gonna get
We are in an El Nina pattern this year; must be a huge stream from the south — It’s the CT Express from Hawaii!
El Nino this year Suz…! It robs us here in the Isles of much needed rain…!
Dammit. I thought i was going to have just enough breathing room to finish filing for bankruptcy and maybe get my earnings back in line. HAH. Got double dip garnished and now hoave -38$ in the bank account and 3$ to my name. Topped off by an eviction notice tonight. Have to be out in 7 days, searching craigslist and other options. But at the moment emotionally exhausted from the past 48 hours.
Nowhere to go and debating on just quitting, going back to my mom’s house and seeing if i can land something over there while i draw unemployment for a few months.
local weather dood is saying we will still get rain but not as much as we usually do…. have gotten over 37″ so far since october 1st
It is The Will to Power that Friedrich Nietzsche described that causes such self-destruction.
Gollum was Lord of the Ring but lived in the darkness of the underworld. I see that as the baggage that goes with misspent power.
“His one desire was to possess the Ring that had enslaved him. He pursued the Ring for 50 years after losing it to Bilbo Baggins.”
The quest for power eats up the politician who is feed by the corporate monoliths or other sources. Money can be powerful when used as a wedge. King had little interest in money but his quest for the power to free a race was considered a power move by many. The preent political corporate system screens out the well intended like Kuccinich or isolates them and paints them with thr tar brush.
oh geez alias — dayam i’m so forking sorry
Missed my edit time – didn’t see my oops until now. Not snow in Sacto. Rain. sorry
Good evening, Suz. Hope the weather improves for ya.
hey pastfed — i’m enjoying it from inside (laughing). no more standing in an intersection during storms pretending to be a traffic signal ’cause the powers out. amazing how retirement changed my whole attitude about storms
how ya doing?
Dayam, alias…! That totally bites…! My sincere condolences…! 8-(
doncha just major dislike when that happens…. i figured you meant rain when i read it :) you think you will get hammered with snow?
BB – that’s perfect. Absent a Moses, the best we can hope for is Lieberwhore. etal. playing the part of Gollum.
Doing OK. My younger son is leaving for China Monday morning. Going to teach English to young school children for a couple months, then will return.
20 inches of rain in Sacto. Say it ain’t so. I knew we were going to get hammered but 20 inches.
Thanks, CT and Suz,
I’m just trying to figure out how i can do this. I don’t have an easy way to move back myself, because lifting what i have is damned near impossible on my own. I’m not big enough to lift furniture. Not at 5’2″ with chronic abdominal pain.
the snow in china made our local news — they’ve been hammered. how cool for your son — what area is he headed to?
I am on a little dune street. We should be well tested and will follow the Office of nvironmental Service reports on gravity collection sewage spills, We oppose that for our town in favor of a low pressure collection system which is sealed. Should be interesting to go back to the denove hearing with pictures od what we want to avoid.
Take the line of least resistance and go back to your mom. Do whatever you can to minimize the stress.
earlier today it was about that here in Ohio. I heard geese flying overhead.
los Osos central coast
hey senator mary — you back up to the river right?
Oh oh — they don’t call that big exit Laguna for nuthin’.
hey margot — wow — an early spring or mother nature faking ya out before slaming ya again?
i agree with mary alias.
That’s horrible. (((alias)))
Edit: I agree with Mary too.
Ventura or Santa Barbara?
hey margot
It’s very possible to be snow here. Early December storms dropped about a 1 1/2 feet of snow here in town. Made driving around tough. Right now it’s fairly warm, 41 or so and it’s almost 11 p.m. That would be rain temperature, not so much snow. Problem is that my dad goes to dialysis Tues, Thurs, and Saturdays, and neither he nor my mom can drive in snow anymore. I get very busy then with that and work. I work for myself so that makes is easier, that flexibility is good.
Oh it’s going to get colder I think but the birds must not like it this warm. Poor birds.
Normal weather patterns are changing globally. The temperature is critical to store the moisture until spring runoff. Need cold weather uo there.
She’s 200 miles away and i have no way to get back anytime without some assistance. With my wages being garnished i barely have anything i can use to get moved unless i can talk someone into helping me get out and making that 200 mile trip with me.
I’m still trying to figure out what to do.
A province that’s two or three hours west of Bejing. He flies into Bejing, then takes a short flight to his final destination. Don’t remember the exact name – doubt if I could spell it even if I did.
oh crap… fingers and toes crossed ya get rain and not snow
Yep but it has never flooded here. Not even when there was ten feet of water in Sacramento in the 80′s. We don’t even need flood insurance. I am at 90 feet above sea level. When the river rises it flows across the opposite bank. But we did go to the grocery today just in case the electricity goes as per normal.
i hope he gets a chance to play tourist while he is there.
Shit fire. Where are you?
I hate this. I like my job and i’d love to stay there, but circumstances are basically working me over. I’ve been in a downward spiral since 2007 and every time i think i improve, i get screwed over again–3 times worse. I’m also afraid i wont’ fined any job at all on that side of the state.
Everything in relation to detroit is almsot impossible to find a job. Even in the medical field they’re in the middle of hiring freezes and won’t take anyone on. Believe me, i’ve checked.
I’m so sorry. At least you have a fallback with your mother. Do you have any friends where she lives? Maybe they could help you move.
Hi PPD, I found out a couple nights ago what your name meant, it had been puzzling me!
(Preserve, protect, defend the Constitution of the United States, correct?
in boulder creek the creek rose toward the other bank — i had big huge boulders on my side of the creek and the san lorenzo came down the mt with the point of the y junction on that far bank. location matters.
what do you do?
hey cujo — how’s seattle tonight?
Evening. 50s here — joy!
hey sunny — about time you warmed up!
Grand Rapids MI, and my mom is over in Port Huron, which is about 60 miles north of Detroit. So you can guess just how lousy the job prospects are there(and here). I want to go back, but i want to go back with a job on the horizon. Not perpetual unemployment like my brother has had for the last 10 months, i think. Particularly with Mom in such bad straights herself.
ditto.
You have mail
Pharmacy technician. Nationally Certified at that. But can’t find a better paying position to save my life. It’s been this way since 08, when the hiring freezes began.
You mean someone blabbed? Now I’ll be on the teabagger red baiting watch list. Yikes!
It’s the same here in Ohio, hiring freezes. Usually nursing homes were taking on people but not even that, now. Very hard times.
Hi Margot,
I saw flocks and flocks of Canada geese flying high over the PA fields today.
hah, yes, someone blabbed. I thought maybe PD= Police Department but the rest…a mystery! I couldn’t just ask.
I’ve been wondering all this time!
hey ce — how’s the trip?
Hi Chris, please please take more photos. The one you showed us was so pretty.
It is tough out there. Pharmacist acquaintance just had her hours cut. Was making good money. No longer.
And use travellers check instead of keeping a bakance the bank may offer free. Call the local help hot line and ask for people to move you.
I’m so sorry. However, that’s our family game plan for these times. Live tribal. Let Mom know you can break her fucking heart if she pulls power games. !!*g*! Learn to give each other space and support. And be handy about the house.
He should be able to get some free time for sightseeing near the end of his stay there. He want to at least see the Great Wall.
i sure as hell ain’t seeing any jobs being created…
5 miles from Morro Bay
BB and Suz – some amount of rain on the snow is good, adds to the total water content of the snow pack. Too much rain or warm weather melts the snow and is not good. Plus rain on snow can cause flooding down the Truckee, which has happened in the past and causes much damage. Good for Pyramid Lake though! Tahoe needs a lot of water too. So I would like more snow in mountains, some rain down here. If it must snow here, I don’t want a lot this time.
hey openhope — families gotta stick together and help each other out.
I’ll see what i can do. I just feel so trapped because i want to keep my job. I’m good at it and this is what i get? Unceremoniously discarded like anyone else trying to keep their head above water?
Pretty nice. In contrast to what CA’s been going through, it’s been warm here and relatively dry.
Hey Suzanne!
Lovely and clear, parents all reasonably well if a bit ancient. The architecture in lower SE PA is beautiful, and makes us yearn to live here again. But the traffic is horrific. Lots of wonderful 18th century houses are crowded into highway exits.
don’t you have dual citizenship? are there pharmacy jobs in canada?
Fabulous opportunity. How fluent is he in chinese?
They’re hard to see for all the ones being lost.
There are openings in the Ohio welfare offices. Whatever they call that. Jobs and Family Services.
I’m not getting fired, its the prospect of having to quit something i’ve been devoted to for nearly 6 years. They want me there.I’m good at what i do. Everyone’s expendable but this isn’t exactly an easy job to retrain someone new in, so i’d be okay another year with it. But it’s a union job and its paying–even with the wages being garnished.
I was in the middle of filing for bankruptcy so i’d have the money to STOP the garnishing in the first place. All i’d have ot worry about was paying off my lawyer’s retainer.
i haven’t been able to start that process because of lack of money. It’s not exactly cheap for initial processing fees. It’s one of two things i’d planned on filing for as soon as the garnishing stopped. I know how to budget, dammit. I’m feeling insulted by the fact that it seems like i CAN”T budget anymore, for all i’m working and working steadily.
Backup plan Look for a roomate and move into ther place.
Amidst the anti-enlightenment of Cheney’s Terror & Bush’s Village Idiocy, I grew tired of watching them wipe their feet on the Constitution in direct violation of their oaths of office. So PPDCUS seemed appropriate.
so your choices are find a place or be homeless but keep your job or move to mom’s and have to give up your job
totally bites
Great area for road biking and wines — two of my favorites
Hi Margot!
We didn’t bring our camera this trip as we were traveling very light via Continental, but we have some pics from last year in a file. We will look for some next week.
i already fired off two emails via listings found online right after i was told about getting out. I’ll be lucky if i get an answer tomorrow on any of them.
Prospects of living with friends? Not so high, particularly since both of them are with their own parents. One makes more money than i do, but she also is in school for a doctrate.
Try a paralegal they are cheaper and some will work wiht you or provide the right papers to file.
He’s not really fluent in speaking, he can speak a little bit, but he can read and write a fair amount. He’s taken two courses in Mandarin at the Community college, and the professor (who’s Chinese herself) emphasized reading and writing more than speaking. In fact it was the professor who notified him of the opportunity to go to China, and there were a couple other students in his classes that had gone there before who encouraged him to go. I’m sure he’ll be picking up more of the language while he’s there, he’s a fairly quick study.
hiya CE — how’s your trip?
Hi all! Never heard (of) this guy until yesterday. He’s special. lyrics are under more info.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYzS4OElkNY
If i leave this county i’m going to have to let the lawyer go anyway. Meanwhile the new tenants are being as obnoxious as only the way newly graduated high schoolers/early college age can be. They know i’m here, but they’re basically acting as if i’m not.
total immersion is the fastest way to learn. he’s gonna have a blast and will learn more chinese in the few months he will be there than he did in the courses he took prior to going.
hey emerson — smooth
Where are you?
Is there anyone in town who would be willing to store some of your furniture if you were to move into someone else’s place and share rent?
Going well, PPDCUS.
I spent the afternoon helping my 85 year-old Mom open a gmail account and made her practice over and over how to logon and send mail to us. She wrote my son, “your mother is mean” as a geste!
With any dialect of chinese the tonalities are the most important, so he’ll definitely pick up those while there. It’s hard to teach, as far as i’ve seen with that language. The modulation means everything.
They can be cute, can’t they? I know the feeling — luckily, my folks are 10 minutes away
Hoping someone contacts me soon about that. I’m not giving up, but i’m just exhausted on several levels from the last 48 hours.
Please check your Facebook messages.
As she become more housebound, it is important for her to use email again. She is taking Women’s Studies at Penn State local campus, and needs to be in contact with her professor, too. My poor Dad — he thinks she won’t be able to “get it.”
Chris, my friend’s 90+ year old dad is one of my Facebook friends and he really loves it. But I will not play Mafia Wars with him…
fingers and toes crossed for ya alias — wish there was more i could do
mafia wars and farmville look too addictive to me
be sure to leave her written instructions with lotsa what if’s covered.
congrats on the 100 bb
heh heh! And I haven’t looked at FB in days. I know it is late, but driving in all the traffic tonight has us really wired.
CE — did you catch Young at Heart on PBS this week?
20 inches???
wtf?
hey loohoo — how’s your vacation going?
We saw Return to Cranford, and maybe YAH. Was it about Neil Young?
No shit.
it was wonderful
young @ heart — road to nowhere
What about the Peace Corps or the Red Cross? I understand they’re hiring.
Here’s the trailer CE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjnfoFg7i7g
I keep leaving to read the Naderite thread. Holy Shit Fire. I have seen some pissed off pups in my day but that thread takes the cake. 600 comments. I don’t want to continue it up here – just saying…
Or the VA. I see ads for HC employees for the VA a lot on tv. I have been paying attention since my daughter cannot find work and she is a newly graduated RN. But I think she got a job at San Quentin. She finds out next week.
Find it on Independent Lens
http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/young-at-heart/
lotsa restless folks — it may break that jane record of 800 (or was it higher)
I have chronic pain issues. I doubt i’d be able bodied enough for either one of them. Unpaid Volunteer part time maybe, for the Red Cross but that’s about it.
I understand. Things coming at you from all directions at once. A lot of logistics to figure out for each scenario. Given your circumstances, try to decide the most desirable option you want to pursue, then break it down into tasks, and tackle one thing at a time. Getting that first task behind you will help give you strength and confidence to tackle the next.
Where is this?
the jason thread that posted before thers’ late nite
Good luck to your daughter, I think. Sounds kinda scary. Good union job for sure, though.
The first they said to her on the interview was, “We don’t negotiate for hostages.” But Sara knows that it is safer to work at the prison than to work in an E.R.
Goodnight all — I’ll do catch-up later. Much watching of the horror in Haiti as well.
They are at 617 comments now.
staff in the prison have a lot more firepower available to them sooner than the er does. of course, the prison has its violence inside the facility instead of the external to the hospital violence brought to the er’s. its when the external becomes internal to the er that it can get ugly quickly.
I am going to bed, too. Good night! Good luck aliasofwestgate. I will be thinking about you.
I don’t know anything about prisons but Bill was an e.r. doc. And I worked in security at Mount Zion Hospital in SF. Scary.
g’nite mary mcc
take care, CE
g’nite ce
Thanks Mary, everyone. I’m going to attempt to sleep now. We’ll see how far that goes.
That is such excellent advise… Easy to forget when situations become overwhelming.
g’nite alias — fingers and toes crossed for ya hon — dayam this sucks
has everyone gone to sleep?
That’s powerful stuff.
Hey!
you up early again sunny?
I’m here. Being severely disciplined.
Seems Fancy Feast not only change their label but also the formula for the ONLY acceptable wet cat food in the universe.
Nah. Up late :-)
oh dear — bailey eats science diet dry — i refuse to listen to her cries of ‘wet wet’ when i had it in the house. she would go over to where the cans were and become quite vocal. that was the last time her xmas stocking was stuffed with wet food as treats (laughing)
Can’t keep my eyes open, I’m turning in. Good nite, everyone. Nite Suz, Sunny.
still here, Suz — hey emerson
If you see this – just wondering: you mentioned the new tenants – do you mean they’re trying to move their stuff in?
Are you being evicted for non-payment of rent, or because the landlord wants the place for new tenants?
Might make a difference.
I’m so sorry, I don’t know Michigan’s landlord tenant laws – but in most states, you can go to court to respond to an eviction and usually (depends on the state) get at least a little more time to move.
I don’t want to give you false hope; a few days might not help you much. But it’s worth a try – and it shouldn’t cost you anything because you’re responding to the eviction. Your papers should tell you what court it’s in; if not, try looking up the courts for your county and calling a clerk. Court organization is so different in every state that I couldn’t begin to suggest more specifics.
At the least – you already have a bankruptcy lawyer, right? – s/he could tell you what court to respond in.
I know you’re feeling overwhelmed, but trying to get a little time this way might really make a difference for you. I’d give it a shot first thing Mon. a.m.; tomorrow keep looking for a roommate or cheap place. Then go to court, if you can.
Wish I could offer more. Very best of luck; I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you (find it hard to pray these days), and hope something works out.
Disclaimer – I’m not licensed in Michigan, not even actively licensed in Texas and haven’t practiced for a long time, so these are just suggestions.
g’nite pasted — nice seeing your fonts again
hey tejan — that’s good advice — i hope alias checks back in the morning
Hal wins. Always. Once we were six hours short of tube feeding through the neck when he recommenced eating. Even the vet was alarmed.
Guy has a serious loose screw. Guess I’ll be out seeking old label in the stores.
geez sunny. start checking online too.
time for me to turn into a pumpkin again. thank you for hanging out here with me tonight. stay warm, stay dry, and stay safe.
g’nite all.
nite suz. thanks for the hospitality.
Last month Purina One dry-special care hairball remedy- changed their formula… I escaped unscathed. Perhaps this was the final straw. Hal believes in ritual. Lucky for him he rescued me and bonded while still sane.
He’s eating the dry stuff now, so he’ll be fine. But I’ll be punished.
Thanks, Suzanne. She doesn’t have a lot of spare time for blogs, I suppose, but if she’s checking Craigslist, and if she is anything like me, a drive-by of FDL will be irresistible.
Sunny – missed the beginning of this. You should come by Caturday tomorrow and tell it…er, well, today.
Did Sci Diet actually change formulas? I thought it was just labels, package design. I gather your kitteh let you know he noticed a difference.
My pumpkin carriage is pulling up its wheels, too. Nite all.
Nite tejanarusa. Not Science Diet, Purina 1 Special Care Hairball Remedy changed. They acknowledged the change. Stuff even looks different.
This week Fancy Feast changed their label on their little cans of chicken feast (which they now also call “classic”). According to my persnickety kitteh, it’s just. not. right.
If I’m awake *g*, maybe I will drop by Caturday.
Because they were victims of politically motivated murder?
