Good Morning Pups! Okay, I had two weeks back to back with two holidays and I am missing that break already! You know I had no understanding when I came back to my mountain of work. Such is Life.
As I was working on my pile this week, it became harder and harder to remember the promises I made to myself for the new year. I know, that’s sad, and we are still in the first week!
So, I had to slow down and realize…hey, laugh more, play more, love more….remember that? I think I’m good now. Moderation, that’s the word for the year.
I think I enjoyed the holidays a little too much. It feels like I put on a few extra pounds that must come off quickly. Any ideas?
How has your first week of 2010 been?

About Firedoglake
Good morning. This year, I’ll attempt to give up processed sugar (to the extent possible). I read an article about NBA player Steve Nash, who gave up sugar and claims major improvements in mood and energy,
Good morning. Continuing a question from previous thread. Fed tax went up in 2010. How did this happen without any news about it? Has anyone read anything to explain this?
The photo is great. January sucks at the Y and all the fitness joints. Wannbee’s come out of the woodwork and clog up the lanes, classes and weights. Come February they all go away!
G’morning. Wow, really. Maybe I’ll try to lower my intake. Not sure if I can give it up and I don’t mess with those artificial sugars.
Now you are telling me something…anybody know any details?
When I have actually been employed and working, the ‘longest’ work weeks always seemed to be those that started or ended with a holiday.
Mornin’ Ms DeVeria from not so warm and sunny Florida (woke up in the night hearing precipitation hitting the windows – not a sound I have heard that frequently in the southlands)
the white death
I’m sure. I won’t be one of them. There is plenty of workout equipment in our garage and that is just more convenient for me. If I do anything, I’ll do water aerobics.
G’morning. I was just listening to the news and heard it is chillier than normal down there right now. It is freezing up here!
The water aerobics folks use the old diving well next to the lap pool so they are cool. It’s the tourista’s clogging up the lap lanes that raise my hackles! Actually I am all for anyone getting fit and am glad to see them try. Not everyone was born a gym rat.
And with that, off to swim! Peas ya’ll.
3534 in Tampa right now. Forecast high of 44 today and 28 tonight for the lowHave fun!
Geez…does it ever get that cold there?
Not often, that’s for sure
I keep thinking about the tea-baggers. Up to now, it’s been ‘what are you talking about, taxes haven’t gone up?” Now they’ll have something that’s true to gripe about. And wait till FoxNews reports this. Seriously, I’m mystified. Did some special tax-break expire?
Before anyone suggests I google it, I’ve tried. Nothing out there…..yet.
I’ll bet the global warming deniers are throwing a hissy fit.
They talk about the possibility of the Jet Stream cooling due to the glaciers melting. That hasn’t happened yet, has it? (Fingers crossed)
They play on the ignorance of the American public. The schools and the media have tragically failed the American public. Anywhere else in the world the threat of global climate change is accepted by the public. In the U.S. vast swaths of the public see global climate change as a myth. The right wing with the complicity of the media have done their job well.
Good morning all. Thanks for being here, Ms DeVeria.
16 degrees here in central Texas.
I’m with dakine. The longest weeks seem to include the days off.
Another idiot, WSJ reporter, on HRC on WJ. Time for me to turn off the TV & read a book.
What are you reading? I’m looking for some good fiction.
G’morning. I think it is cold everywhere. I wish I could sleep until spring…I don’t like the cold and I really want to get out of the house today.
Me too…have you guys tried the kindle. I’m thinking about investing in one.
I rarely read fiction. Reading The Price of Greatness by Arnold Ludwig, about the characterisitics of people who rise to the top of the greatness scale. Studied 1004 such people.
I was thinking about it and still may invest but I do a lot of reading on the beach and tend to just leave the book behind for a walk or lunch…whatever. So, I’d still have to buy books that I wouldn’t worry about being stolen (not that any ever have).
true
This seems to explain it.
We call them the New Year Resolutionaries. We get a few every year who become regulars, so it’s possible for anyone to really do it.
I’m thinking about taking up yoga for the stretching and the breathing.
Mornin’, DeVeria, pups
First I heard about it was when my paycheck was 2 bucks light and the withholding amount was 2 bucks heavy. Doesn’t sound like much but that $104/year. That’s about 5 books they’ve sucked out of my budget.
Yeah, well it feels a lot colder in Goofport.
Yes it does. Politically speaking, this is very bad. You have no idea the griping that went on the day paychecks were issued.
Most at my place were $8 dollars light. And, believe me, that $8 was missed. Now they’re all fretting about next ck being even lighter.
Don’t overlook Kundalini when looking.
I see the supposed left progressive blogs still have their knives out for Jane. Now Crooks and Liars has piped in, discrimately of course. Sad bastards.
SteveAudio: A non-story that’s all over the news and the blogs
The link is to this unknown supposed progressive’s site where he trashes Jane and compares her to Faux News. Uh huh. Nice,
http://steveaudio.blogspot.com/2010/01/theyve-warned-you-as-it-drains-away-but.html
Our place uses QuickBooks and it sure knew the tax rates had changed. I guess the govt decided to take back the money it gave us last year.
Very bad timing.
Lady Jane actually stood up and did something, thereby stealing all their thunder. Too fuckin’ bad.
Time for me to
turn offpull an Elvis on the TVFixed it.
Morning all…Really cold here in Central TX..starting off at l8…We’ve had a run of it…All together: Stay Warm.
That was just a loan. You didn’t get the memo?
G’morning. I knew nothing…when did it happen?
My people didn’t say a word. Our stuff is automatically updated.
Good Morning DeVeria, pups.
Brrr! When’s summer?
I know this probably isn’t the proper place to say it, but I got an alarming ad with this post…
It’s a videogame site called “playsushi”, and there are warnings all over the internet regarding the virus’ your computer will get if you click on ANY link at the site you are directed to. I hate the thought of people getting a computer virus clicking an ad on here! I always try to click the ads here, my own (meager) way of contributing.
When I moved here I had all the cold weather gear I needed in CO. A really nice pair of insulated boots, good to -40, dry rotted over the years. Now if I could only remember what I did with my long johns.
Got up this morning to everything in the front of the bottom shelf of the kitchen pantry on the floor. Big pile of King Arthur flour and bird seed. Prime suspect: Nagi, Prince of Darkness, who else.
kids! nothing but trouble…
Right now I have a nice black and white furry purry footwarmer.
I have to assume it went into effect 1 Jan. Nice of the govt to tell us, no?
Soon as breakfast is over there’ll be 7 on da waterbed. Feurae and Maste will be competing for laplump. Great day to read. Right next to the space heater.
O My, I hope he found what he wanted….
G’morning…it is soooooo cold!
Probably why I haven’t noticed then…haven’t done payroll since the 1st…geez.
Well, he got a couple cans from the second shelf so I’m thinkin’ he was doin’ a race around and decided to leap into the pantry. Prolly scared the hell out of him.
One of my coyotes came right up on my back porch last night, according to the footprints in the snow. I think he must have rung the doorbell, which doesn’t work (wireless, and doesn’t transmit thru 2 foot thick stone wall we discovered after installation), so I didn’t know he was there.
We had to look at pay stubs from last year to figure out where the money went. QuickBooks has automatic updates so Jody didn’t know until the checks were printed.
That’s too bad. Ya coulda had him in for a drinkee and a little chat.
Damn , slept until 9:30
The suns already up ,but I’m not.
Where are my manners ?
Good morning everyone !
Methinks the sun here decided to take the day off. Overcast and dreary. Plus it rained sometime during the night.
Sounds like the start of an interesting short story, eCAHN and the Coyote
Um, no. I have Cahnstance to worry about. Don’t let her out at night, and won’t let the coyote in. Actually, I’m going out to track the pawprints, to see if maybe it was the neighbor’s dog.
Good Morning DeVeria and Firedogs,
DeVeria – I’ve seen several of my customers bringing Stevia in to the restaurant as a sugar substitute – I finally had to look it up – and it’s not bad, none of the blood glucose damage associated with refined sugar or artificial sweetners – comes under several brand names, eg TruVia
p.s. I don’t drink much of it, but cbl loves her soda – 300 cal a bottle – damn, so I’m trying to switch over to flavored Tea’s (Snapple Peach !) and keep adding water to it as I drink – less than half the calories
Weather Channel made it sound like there’s snow headed to Daytona – and I tried to find a working web cam for Savannah as Atlanta looked to have at least a foot on the ground
My first week of 2010 stunk too DeVeria, first I am freezing my stones off as we welcome back the Ice Age. I bought into the Global warming crapp a few years ago when Al Gore sold us on his Inconvainient Gobal Hemmeroid movie or whatever the hell he called it. Copenhagen was a Global warming cult meeting that resulted in a large flushing of these global warming turds down the toilet.
Honey or turbinado sugar, which isn’t refined.
cold and rainy in Fla. How dismal can it get?
My previous companion learned how to get under the comforter on the waterbed. I had gone looking for her one day and finally noticed the lump on the bed at one of the corners. Current companion is ‘content’ to just lie on blankets.
You might want to dig into the details of climate change a little further. Just might save you from looking like Senator Inhofe.
I’ve got an afghan over the lower half of the bed. Fully expect to find one under it if this weather keeps up.
good morning!
Started my year by breaking a tooth.
It was beyond repair and had to be removed.
Kinda weird losing a tooth ,the sucker had been there since I was about 8 years old and I really feel like I lost something. I don’t know quite how to describe it !
Wait til ya lose them all. *g*
maybe i’ll check it out. Thats how I had to drink my drinks after i had my gastric bypass.
Climate change is a much better name than global warming.
Its got to get warmer!
expensive!
Not looking forward to that.
More accurate if nothing else.
I dread to see what this suckers gonna cost to replace. It’s near the front and there is no way I’m going around like some toothless redneck.
I’ve had to quit eating popcorn because of the two teeth I’ve broken while doing so in the last few years.
And of course, the last ‘fix’ lasted six months before falling apart and with no insurance or job or such means I live with the result.
Isn’t life in the 21st century just ef’fin’ ducky?
the one consolation for me is the broken teeth are in the very back
ohtheinanity
Good Morning Cold Fire Pups.
People sometimes make fun of Los Angeles, but the weather is gorgeous here. I didn’t check the temps yesterday, but they had to be in the 80′s. Worked in the yard most of the day. Weeds pulled. Flowers planted.
I think my Coca Cola addiction has a lot to do with my bad teeth. In fact I know it does!
I’m gonna make an effort to find a less harmful substitute .
Ps I used Splenda in my coffee for awhile and developed severe stomach pains ,which stopped when I discontinued it’s use
I do. Hasn’t affected my mental capacity in the least. *g*
*G*
billybugs and dakine –
so sorry guys – is there a dental school nearby ? can save you a fortune and the residents are constantly supervised while treating anyone
I am so jealous!!!
noticed if I use Splenda for baking there’s no prob – but using it straight as in coffee results in some lower gastro-intest.um, distress
Can’t argue with Raven about people coming out of the wood work to work out. My first day working of the new year was Monday and I had a lot of members show up. Everyone had the same tale of woe. I just kept reminding the gals that we’re all in the same boat and the first step was to just show up at the gym and they had already been successful with that. A big part of my job is to encourage, lift up and generally support the members. I worked out extra hard that night and slept wonderfully that night.
DeVeria, I heard once that quick weight loss is not as healthy as a long slow one. Not sure if that’s true though.
We have a family outing planned this afternoon — to the Griffith Park Observatory. This is part of my new years resolutions, to have more out of doors planned family excursions.
I used to be a Coke freak,
it’s hard on your teeth to be sure, I think you can dissolve a tooth in it if you let it sit in the soda long enough, my metallurgical father used to tell me it would dissolve steel.
I quit once my stomach said enough — too acidic — I occasionally get a craving but am surprisingly happy with cool water. I went from straight out of the can, to on ice, to on a lotta melty ice, to none. It was worth it.
grrrr ;)
Morning demi
It has to warm up before I have any outdoor excursions…lol
My weakness is pepsi. I’ve eased up a lot though.
Sorry, dear. Morning back attcha. I’ve got two ripe tomatoes still on the vine too. (Digging myself deeper here, huh?)
as a long time Northern Californian, used to love heading your way this time of year – Mt Pinos, Anza Borrego, and hit Death Valley or Pismo on the way home – and is there anything better than Santa Barbara in January ? I dont think so :D
you are ;)
I think you’re right! We camped at Pismo for Thanksgiving and it was co-cold.
Welcome back Chubby! ;-) If you want to loose those vacation pounds really fast I have a sure fire method. Simply cut the carbs. No bread, no pasta, no corn etc. You otherwise can eat just about anything you want. How about a big jucy steak no problem, just forgo the
frenchAmerican fries. Hamburger fine leave the bun on the plate! Pizza, It’sa O.K. just take a spoon or fork and eat the cheese and sauce, I know this one is hard, leave the dough, crust too! If for just two or three weeks you can cut the carbs you will be back to you pre vacation self. Good luck!I’m sitting here giggling and my husband asked me why so I told him. He said I should mail you one. :)
The low carb diet always works…
I don’t think your problem is Popcorn nuts. It sounds more like your teeth are weak. May I suggest finding and using Floride mouth wash three to four times a day, or more. Also get and use a tooth paste designed to strenthen you enamel. Of couse for now stay away from nuts!
You can have the fudge, but don’t take away my carbs. You’re right, however. Oh, just thinking of cutting carbs makes me want to go to the gym. Right now.
Let me set you straight KKgrand wizzard south K dragoon. Washington DC is Hollywood east for ugly people so you and your cult leader Al Gore qualify.
The best part is you don’t really have to remain on the drastic low carb regimen for ever. Just until you knock off those Pig out pounds.
Wow, it’s pretty early in the morning to be that mean.
SouthernDragon is so far from the KKK, you misinterpret his name.
Pardon me, but I think your teabags are showing! Find and Black Socialist President hiding under your bed today?
Don’t worry about the troll. He almost got banned the other other night for some threats. There was another not so long ago who came up with the same shit. Says more about them than me.
Your right! Lets start all over again! Good morning Demi. Good morning ohthehumanity I hope all is well with you this morning.
there you go…lol
good morning! barely…Yoga DeVeria, are you up for it? We’ll drag Jane along too.
yoga? hmmm…i’ll try when you come, how’s that
I think Jane already has the Breath of Fire exercise down.
http://www.kundaliniyoga.org/pranayam.html
Lose a few pounds, OK. Reduce your intake and increase your output. Simple HUH? Walking one hour a day burns 600 calories. If you do that each day you can lose a pound a week, sustainably. Four to five pounds a month and an opportunity to keep it off. No special diet or drugs.
Good morning all — It feels good to be back in SoCal
(Sunny and 75 degrees) after a snowfilled two weeks in
the Midwest. Thanx for the many tips here on how to trim
down after the holidays (I had one too many food induced
comas); here’s my credo: We all know the key is exercise,
so when ever you feel like a ‘brisk walk–or slog’…lay
down til the feeling goes away.
and upward dog!
Just spoke with a friend in Daytona two mins. ago. Its was sleeting as we spoke and 32 degs. here in NJ its 25 degs. and sunny , nice day a bit chilly is all no big deal for NJ in Jan.
I’m hearing of snow in the Panhandle and sleet just north of Tampa. Still can’t find my goddamn long johns.
There was precipitation clicking against the windows here in Brandon during the overnight.
I get up and find hailstones the size of golfballs in the driveway I’m movin’ to Honduras. They could use another lefty or two anyhoo.
It’s raining damp and cold 47Degrees down hear in Sunny Florida!
Anybody still here?
I’ll join the chorus of kvetching southern residents – 21 here in San Antonio when I went to bed last night; may have gone colder. I spent the evening fashioning some extra layers over windows (none of which fit right). I put in weatherstripping in early December, living room was perfectly comfortable. That was temps in the 40′s or so.
Now, not enough. Too much ill-fitting glass in this room.
No lap-warming cats right now – two wandering around, wanting to go out (!), chasing each other; other two ensconced under the reading lap, close as they can get.
I bought a new electric blanket yesterday, as old one conked out. Ahhhhh; lovely, except for getting up. But no kitties, except for brief good-nighters (Patchy stretches out on hip, then hops down and disappears). Not sure why.
Gotten out of bed by call from landlord – next door neighbor’s heat stopped working, need access to my bedroom closet. Yes, her heat/ac stuff is reached from the ceiling of my closet, where our places are closet to closet. Brrrrr.
Errm, that’s “reading lamp.”
No way in Hell, but while I’m down there visiting Al Gore I’ll ask him about Global Warming and doing some derivative carbon trades with Goldman Sacks. Wish me luck!
Good morning DeVeria and everyone. I am here late, but wanted to encourage you to go slow and steady with weight loss. Last few months I’ve lost 14 pounds. I just upped my exercise a little bit. I get overwhelmed and stop if I make it too hard on myself, so I get on the treadmill and jog (started out by walking for over a year and worked up slowly) about 4 times a week, and I do Pilates twice a week. I had a lot of lower back and hip pain, and after a year and a half of Pilates it is greatly reduced, so I do that just to keep my body mostly pain free. I wasn’t super in shape and yet I found I could do the simplified versions of Pilates exercises and I built up to the more advanced moves. And then I do jazz dance twice a week. When the weather’s nice, I work out in the garden on the weekends. I also find it’s easier to exercise in the morning, because then I don’t put it off and not do it later in the day when I get busy with work. I have a treadmill at home, and I turn on the radio and listen while I work out, and it makes the time go faster.
For food, I eat whatever I want. I cook at home so I have total control over the ingredients I use. I eat carbs and eat full-fat foods, among other things. If you don’t eat some fat, you will not feel full. This is why everybody got fat eating fat-free stuff–it’s not calorie free. I am short, and just don’t need a lot of food to maintain my weight, so I had to cut back a bit to lose. Just meant eating half a slice of toast instead of a whole one at breakfast, and I switched from a regular dinner plate to a salad plate and filled that for dinner. I’m done when I’ve finished that plate. Fill up on veggis at dinner, and that helps, too. I don’t eat lunch because I’m not hungry then, and usually too busy with work. I drink a lot of water, and some green tea throughout the day. Probably drink more red wine than I should, but it’s my one vice! (It’s low-carb compared to beer, if that’s any consolation!) There’s a great book called The Fat Fallacy, and it talks about how French people eat full fat foods like butter and chocolate, yet are slender, and how they do that and how we can do that. He has some interesting ideas.
Got 16 more pounds to go, and maybe a little bit more after that.
Also, for the holidays–I gained 3 pounds at Thanksgiving, and I didn’t want to gain for Xmas. I lost it, and then I made all our favorite foods, but I spread them out over the course of the month, rather than eating them all on one day for Xmas. That really helped, and I lost a pound over Xmas doing that, but didn’t miss out on any foods that really mattered to me. Your family may or may not cooperate with such a scenario, though.
I wish you good luck with any weight loss you might choose to undertake, and a healthy new year!
I’m glad you straightened that out. I’m thinkin’, is she sittin’ on her tigers?
It’s the new smell of the blankee they don’t like. Put it on the floor and roll all over it, nekkid. That should fix that. *g*
Go over to MotherJones.com and ask Kevin Drum. He bought one and reviewed it some time ago.
Vis a vis weight loss, check out any of the books by Dr. Ian Smith.
Weight, yeah that is a problem. My solution would probably kill you but you could try it. Smoke 5 packs a day of the cheapest cigarettes that you can find. They will kill your sense of taste and you will not have time to eat on this regime. Yes, it may take five separate stop smoking clinics and being locked up to give up the nicotine addiction but you WILL lose weight.
replace sugar as a sweetener with Stevia, it is natural, and they use it japan a lot. It cna cut your calorie intake a lot.
Cut out most refined grains and the sugars and you are guaranteed to lose 5 lbs without even trying. It is all about keeping your glycolic index low and stable.
