What’s on your mind?
ZED Good evening. How are things at your house?

“”"
hey calvin — glad ya like it. how ya doing tonight?
LQQK
Yikes…!₧#$!@#Ö x x »
hahahah — how’s the west bay tonight dood?
Our Bay is half full like the moon but was temperate, calm and sunny.
I hit the gym at 6 am and agin at 6:30 pm for 3 hours of hot yoga. Arthritic knees is totaly flexing without pain. Got a lot of loosening up to go yet’
How ;s your bay?
twas gray all day — weather dood claimed there would be sunshine and then the rain came in this afternoon.
chillin but not as quickly as last night.. when we got up it was 65 brrrr… I know we are wuses but damn thats cold when ya half dressed..
Hey Suz!
hey newton — how ya been?
Hey nahant thank you for the two jokes easy on the eye.
Well I was jumping for joy when I read Cynthia’s diary earlier today about Geithner & AIG.
I was figuring it would be all over everywhere, the tar would be heating up and the feathers being plucked.
Then, complete downer: the story is nowhere else. Not a mention on either Rachel or KO [just terror, terror, TERROR on both] and not so much elsewhere around the intertubes.
Crap. I want my Geithner perp walk and orange jump suit!!
OT: just finished a really well-written book called Doctor/Dealer about a Philadelphia dentist who was a MAJOR cocaine dealer in the 1980′s, finally got caught, but went on the lamb before trial. [Caught again, though, and still in jail.] It was written by the same guy who wrote Black Hawk Down. With that rec alone, I wouldn’t have read it, but I did, and it’s really absorbing.
Hope the guy’s still around to write on Rahm & Timmy.
8 to 15 surf coming tomorrow morning too. All weekend! get out and watch it it is amazing especially if there are surfers on your beaches. Camera ready storm surge.
they were good weren’t they!!
hey mauimom — i’m hoping tomorrow tradmed picks up on it. they usually run behind the blogs with reporting stuff we pick out. remember it took them a few days to figure out marcy’s 183 waterboards.
*
we had that last week — high astronomical tides with storm surge. surfers were happy
Suz! I’ll tell you whats on me mind; Lee Stranahan’s video here on FDL
Thanks for the outstanding video, Suz!
crying dood?
hehehe how’s sac tonight larue?
Surf is 20-30 on the north shores of Maui & Oahu. Was 40′ here on Christmas Day.
hey kelly — how’s denver tonight?
hey loohoo — glad ya liked it
how’s socal tonight?
I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the reminder.
Spitzer did have something up at HuffPo, but it was a little hard to follow for “amateurs.”
Hmm, dead meat, do I grind it, fry it, broil it, grill it, braise it, or slice it and pound it and load it with shallots, french mustard and some vinegar and capers and eat it raw?
*G*
a plus is i think tradmed smells blood in the water — they are not talking about this — yet — but they are talking about him and not sucking up like they used to do in pieces about him.
I can remember standing on beach in Morro Bay and watching pounding surf come in. Afuckingmazing.
sheesshh ya make me hungry again Larue… And we just had Lamb curry with Jasmine rice… still stuffed but..
hey mary mcc — whazzup?
Remember we are “looking forward not backward”. Yuk if you have enoigh connections you can steal steal steal. I was hopeful too.
Hiya Suz
no apple pie? no ice cream?
Jimmy Fallon tonight!
He has John Oliver on now. Oh, I love these boys!
65F?
You can’t call that wuss . . . you just can’t, hayall we’re in the hi to low 40′s with fog night and day here.
Wimp, ya, you could call that wimp.
-50F in the midwest, and you are man enough to call 65F half clothed?
You must be havin sex outdoors fully nekkid . . . *G*
And if ya are, Who am I to talk shit about that!!!!!!! *G* ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
hey ppd — how ya doing tonight?
Hey Suz. Not much. Working. Making a tiny bit of dough but that is just fine. How about yourself?
ya don’t fuck with the Mistress of the sea.. she has a way of taking control .. when ya least expect it!
hey ce — still enjoying your snow?
fair to middling. joints kinda achy tonight but all in all ok.
did have a taste of some cherry vanilla… Hagen Daz ya know!
good thanks — everything ok up north?
In my former life I was a securities lawyer, and based on Cynthia’s story, this is just clear cut illegality — on both the Federal and State level.
I’m glad Cuomo’s in NY to act on this. I’m sure Rahm is pulling out all the stops [swearing + promises] to try to assure that Cuomo doesn’t take action. I figure he’s already got Holder on a leash.
But y’know, at some point, as an attorney you just look at behavior and say, “this is wrong.” I’m hoping Holder has enough of that left within him to do so. No actual proof of that thus far, but maybe . . .
Hey Suz. Showing my age.
Thunder Road
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
i want to thank ya’ll for the 300 tuesday night. made me smile a big assed smile when i checked the thread the next day.
It was on Huffpo all day, mauimom.
hey sunny — that’s an oldie but goodie.
you still shiverying?
I was at my natural food store and found fresh horsradish root and ginger root. When I got home I graded them into the hot veggie soup. Awsome hoss.
Little fresh romaine salad some 9 grain bread and some hot chili flakes. Ready to rock. Saw you were making some well informed comments today.
So I guess if someone beats the crap out of me and leaves me lying in the gutter, I should “look forward” and not prosecute him/her?
This logic of Obama’s is so twisted it’s hard to distinguish it from Bush.
I do too, MMom, I do too . . . perps in orange and chains, this one has to be it if ever there was a Watergate in this time . . . and I’m still hopeful, this IS it . . . the emails Issa got to, and the pressure on Rhammy from the Freddie/Fannie debacle?
These are the things that political careers are made of . . . once in a lifetime opportunities.
I have to believe Issa, Cuomo, Spitzer and many, many more will champion the email cause.
From that will come some pressure on WH/Obama/Rham for some changes we never expected as the rest of HCR sinks in the west like a setting sun.
I got hope!!! *G*
I know what you mean. Arthritis sucks. I have had it for years. If I keep moving I am much better. I want to take Tai Chi.
Careful nahant, don’t get overheated. That CopenHagen Daz messes with your brain’s climate control center.
I saw it: a video with their blogger who was on Ed, and a piece by Spitzer. But I was expecting a big banner headline; certainly seemed to me like it merited it.
I saw, in the refresh, quickly, The LQQK flash by — was that you? Snow looks lovely, and I’m digging it. Snow there.
Will Maverick’s Get The Call?
Is this enough south to Half Moon Bay, CA to make the call for Maverick’s? Or has that already been called off with this swell cuz it’s too far north?
Can I suggest a project?
How about we snag the youtubes from the Candidate Obama youtube channel before they go away?
Can we make a communal log-in to repost the videos, so these promise do not disappear?
HOLDING ARMS OVER HEAD LOOKING WAY UP.
yup — twas me. amazing how that catches the eye eh?
MSM, doncha know.
Now you did it.
New year’s evem we started out with this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veyPHzxNjog
then went into this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-8LUvW9qv4
Asked and answered — Holder was tapped just like Rahm was tapped.
Holder successfully represented corporate executives threatened with criminal liability in central America death squads providing security for their business operations.
hehehehehe hey emerson — that thunder road of bruce ya laid in the comments earlier is what lead me to this one — how ya doing tonight dood?
To bad we can’t play them over and over in front of the White House on a big drive in screen. Remember drive-ins?
and why the fuck is it called the White House?
Mavericks is off Santa Cruz, I think.
tradition
heh,heh,
loved it.
Even though the Maui News is a total crap of a newspaper, it does have incredible surf pictures on the front page [or at least page 3] nearly every day at this time of year.
I didn’t realize guys were using jet skis to get towed out [makes sense; how do you personally paddle out against those monsters].
You could probably go to the Maui News site and find some cool pics. Just don’t stray over to the “Letters to the Editor” area, or you’ll want to kill yourself — or them.
I plan to be BE at the Rock in the AM to see the rip tides will be fearsome. Got an appointment with my lawyer then.
Hows our favorite Senator elect tonight over worked and underpayed?
Hey BB, do you know a guy named Don Wilson in your area?
half moon bay between santa cruz and sf
gnarly waves there
Nope off Princeton 1/2 mile off shore…
But if I get elected just think about how rich I will be!
I’d like to take Tai Chi too. Only place that has classes here is the Senior Center. I’m not old enough but maybe if I bat my eyelashes and say, “Oh now you aren’t going to ask me my real age are you? Cause I ain’t telling.” Maybe they’d buy that….
I don’t cry, less it’s for 4 and 5 part harmony bluegrass/americana or it’s the best dobro break in history all minor and modal . . . my lil icon it was the last thing on my keyboard that looked kewl . . . *G*
Foggy, in the 40′s night and day, foggy.
I don’t care . . . life is good . . . *G*
Sorry, No Youtube I Could Find
*G*
ha! dood ya gotta create a utube for that tune
hey margot — how ya doing tonight?
Lamb Curry is kewl, any veggies and other seasonings?
What kind of curry?
Lubos Bena
I have a thing for Czech blues.
Speaking of which, here is Pete Grant.
OK, I’ll do that video project myself!
oh that is sweet….
I’m fine, other than I really really need a book that has readable print to read. I’m going stir crazy.
Maui’i Jaws galore on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPWjR7vVxrg
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2eljy_60-ft-of-power_extreme
you can create a utube channel to hold them all at? can he terms of service ya re ownership?
too snowy to drive to the library and its too far to walk?
I know it’s now kharmic to want this, but I want to see Rhammy grovel, shudder, cry, whimper and die for his time and how he used it on this planet . . . . and I don’t care how this comes about, either.
He’s almost transcended McCarthy, Nixon, Reagon, Two Bushes . . . . that’s how much I detest him.
It was the sex thang, wasn’t it . . *G*
What about one of those 2X magnifiers that you lay over the page?
My college boyfriend used to surf there.
God, it was cold!!!!
lets be careful on that slippery slope of fantasy violence
karma has a strange sense of humor dood….
*G*
It went on long after even I snoozed . . . *G*
but of course … carrots, onions, garlic, celery and more.. browned the veggies in olive oil and both red &Madras hot yellow curry… We have also started using Golden Curry from Japan.. Lamb was a left over and added once I transferred it to my Crock Pot and slow cooked it for 3 hours…
Cool. Thanks. Dat’s da place!
Fresh horseradish and ginger rock my world hoss . . . thanks for the compliment on the comments.
Phud’s good, I like what ya do with it . . *G*
can’t tell ya the little lady is right here.. and I don’t want to ruin anything …
Thats the point. Distribute these videos amongst many channels such that they can’t be ever exstinguished.
It is OUR COUNTRY! He made these promises! Keep the evidence to hold him accountable!
He asked for that, specifically.
yes.
My impression of Holder is that there’s very little of the attorney left. Not my profession, but in every one there are professionals and there are politicians. From his bios, Holder struck me as the latter.
Spent a week vacation all over Maui’i many years ago. Those waves are as close as I ever want to get to a tsunami.
I think it’s time to rewrite all of the federal oaths of office.
No one seriously preserves, protects and defends the Constitution anymore, do they. (minus the ?)
That would do it!
Great Suz. How’s the fit feel these days? Getting better, I hope?
baby steps still. sore spots are not as sore. go back for a tweak monday
Above freezing for a while today. Still have a few filthy remnants of the storm.
Thunder Road was a drive-in perennial here. Even after mine was abandoned, it remained on the marquee forevah.
Hey Sunny. Bruce got the idea for that song by walking past a movie theater with “Thunder Road” playing. I still have a cassette recording of a concert at the Capitol Theater where he explains the whole story leading into the song.
“…and there was this Robert Mitchum movie…”
Love this video, by the way. I think for any guy who grew up in the Northeast in the 1970s or 1980s, it evokes memories of one’s own dreams, or at least one’s desires. Heck, in a way I lived that song, except there was no Wendy.
He’s done some great songs since, but this one’s quite my favorite.
dirty snow is so sad and ugly…. always makes me wish for bright clean snow but also reminds me that no snow is not far away.
YAGM
hey cujo — how’s seattle tonight?
Night.
Ah yes, another Bush administration family values scumbag
http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/former-bush-attorney-charged-with-trying-to-kill-his-wife.php?ref=fpb
g’nite loohoo
‘night, Loo Hoo.
(((Loo Hoo)))
well night pups getting LOST…again…
Lemme just say:
I lived through the DNC, here in Denver, not as a priveledged blogger, who were pretty much corraled if you ask me, with the exception of Jane and Glenn Greenwald, always on the hunt for corruption.
Gimme a minute to google.
The thing is it was a FORTRESS! It was Awful!
Meanwhile, watch this – Obama accepting the nomination.
Just watch and remember. Obama says “It’s time for them to own their failure.”
g’lost nahant
I think Sara Taylor already did that. I keep wondering if there were goat sacrifices or burnt offerings when her oath was administered.
you should start diarying all the videos and promises broken.
make each broken promise with accompanying video a separate diary.
Not rainy, for once. I take it you haven’t been washed into the sea, either?
I was trying to see what brand that resonator git was in that vid Margot posted, but couldn’t see. That was fine musics.
But YOU go and put up Pete and his Nashville 8 String Reso, and on of my fav sanger/songwriters of all time. *G*
Lord Mary McCaslin has been fine over the years . . . I can NEVER get enough of her work with Jim Ringer in the old days . . . she’s coming to town at The Palms . . . this month . . .
I’d Bet Pete Shows Up!
nope. protected by the bay from the sea. on a rise far enough above the high high tide line that i can just watch and enjoy instead of worry.
I’m getting there sister
I had completely forgotten that. I hope you do as Suz suggests, a series of diaries.
Yeah, and I can’t tell what kind of reso git that is he’s playing . . . those guys are rather well known around the reso circuits . . . *G* Good stuff!
tic toc kelly (laughing)
edit: sure wish i could find the clip on utube of la law when roz said that to arnie…
Salivating, I am, I am . . . *G*
Ain’t that the truth! For me, this was the ultimate Bruce song on that subject.
“…til you’re out and on that midnight run
losing your heart to a beautiful one
and it feels right
as you lock up the house, turn out the lights
and step out into the night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJKdq1vSwUI
Killin me, in all the right ways . . . ;-)
Hugh has a list you might want to look at for details already documented?
Well, Karl Rove etal. never swore an oath to the Constitution.
They are the Villager People don’t understand that citizenshp requires that the governed be responsible for holding their elected officials accountable to their oath of office.
Unfortunately, rage against the machine is confined to birther teabagger imbeciles.
the river
I”ve always like the Wendy song, but then, I’m left coast and was born to run . . . . ;-)
You know, I think Hugh, and his efforts on Hugh’s list are fine, and even laudable.
But you know what?
Just writing shit down ain’t gonna work. It needs video and rude, RUDE, yet marketable responses. Lee Stranahan has just made the model, and I’m gettin on it.
You all too. Help me out. There’s more than one topic, but just watch the DNC acceptance speech again.
It’s a great album, beginning to end. It describes what it was to be that age in that part of the world at that time as well as anything I’ve heard or read.
Is nahant still here?
i think he is off watching lost again. final season starts later this month
Just wondering if he felt the 4.2 temblor this morning near Milpitas
He has that in the URL for his handle. (Click on the blue “Hugh”, IOW.)
Don’t want to spook anyone, but the Hayward Fault is likely to be where the next big one rips in the bay area.
that’s big enough to wake folks up
This is a song called The Ties That Bind, that’s popular in bluegrass.
The Ties That Band
Ok not the best version vocally of this great song I’ve known for decades . . . but they pick it well.
earthquakes forking terrify me. no forking warning.
*tossing salt over shoulder after crossing fingers*
i used to live and work within 1/2 mile of the hayward fault…and was working swing shift in 89 when loma prieta struck.
I thought I felt a small shift and some creaking, but nothing serious given the distance from epicenter
It ain’t the Senator’s poetry, but it ain’t bad
http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/bruce_springsteen/night.html
(I think I resent “oldie lyrics” ^)
Nahants furry and not so furry friends know when the long waves precede a temblor
I saw the movie. It was action and tension. I did not get that from the Boss.
Kelly, Hugh just produces a warehouse, it’s for you and others to use and create yer magic . . .
It’s merely a resource, and a good one!
Use it, hoss, and make yer magic . . . no need to do less . . . no need to call what Hugh has done anything else than what it is, a resource . . . geez . . .
PITA RITA TIME!
DING!!! One for all!
No question about it. And my place sits exactly on top of it.
That’s why I buy the good single malt.
i wish we could accurately forecast them as we do tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunami’s. those minutes could be put to good use.
Where were you then Cujo?
Yeah, and we can step out on the street and get whacked in a gang drive by shooting for our neighbor.
So fuckin what?
I hope people are prepared next time the East Bay gets hit. Damage estimates given the build up in fault pressure could be serious.
See, folks, this is how you do calm in the midst of life’s realities . . .
Good on ya . . . ;-)
We could get killed by our insurance companies, at the rate this pretend health care reform legislation is going. No problem forecasting that outcome.
Some locals use jet skis to get in the waves. PUt the zip code in NOAA and click on surf advisory.
For cryin out loud, what’s the science say, as the to next proable over 5.0?
Or more?
Anywhere in the Bay Area?
It likely WON’T be in your lifetime, or the lifetime of your kids or grand kids from all I’ve read.
Odds are worse you, your kids and your grand kids are gonna be screwed and hurt more from general living conditions due to corporate facism, loss of jobs, loss of incomes, loss of healthcare, and such.
Chill out, fer cryin out loud, there’s REAL demons at yer door you ain’t considerin, if earthquakes are yer own worst enemy.
And if they are, you’d move outta the area, and take yer family with ya.
So?
combining the fury of earthquakes with the fact that earthquake insurance is so over-the-top expensive, if you survive nature, you still have to beat the fat cat insurers. You think they’ll pay for that? I don’t think so…
I didn’t feel like a Californian until I felt the first tremors…of the earhquakes, I mean.
headed out early tonight — hope ya forgive me.
gotta work some more on my book salon post and catch some shuteye. dang busy week and it’s starting to catch up with me.
g’nite all and thanks for letting me spend some time with you tonight.
This isn’t a demon. Preparedness preserves life and limb in a major quake, even though the damage to property might be the same. This is particularly so in the critical days after the event when public services are strained and people have to pull together as a community.
Dude, I KNOW Maverick’s, I know the tournament, I know the issues that have surrounded it for a decade or more now.
I also know about big surf, and tow in’s and vids of 100 ft. waves . . .
We kewl, hoss . . . Jaws, Diego Garcia, Todos Santos, and one of MY fav’s, Corte’s Bank, a hundred miles out of San Diego or so, by helicopter . . . 100 foot waves, at times . . . *G*
Who has the biggest wave title? It’s up for grabs! *G*
Most earthquake policies written in California aren’t worth the paper their written on — deductibles, percentage payouts, inadequate asset reserves to cover major claim losses.
In eastern Pennsylvania, near Allentown.
‘night, Suzanne. Can’t wait for your Book Salon.
Of hand no.
Yes if you sell your vote and you get primo health care to boot.
Billy Joel’s Allentown?
Few and far between . . I was in Sacto in ’89, been a year since we left San Mateo, and had we been in San Mateo, we still would have not felt or been hurt at all.
My bro was in Santa Cruz, on 47th, they were not hurt, but downtown was . . .
In the grand scheme of things, only the ’06 has really fucked shit up . . . ’89 was not the equivalent of ’06.
Shake, shake, shake, as Los Lobos would sing . . *G*
That’s why I didn’t bother getting any. If it happens, no one will be compensated.
They’re all oldies in a few years, especially if they’re aimed at thirteen year-old girls.
Yep. He described it very well. That’s one of the reasons I left.
Exactly, because the state agency charged with backing up this coverage is a bad joke.
So now you’ve switched from probability to preparedness?
Killin me . . . if yer not prepared yer at risk for all kinds of shit . . . put yer shoes on and look both ways coming out your door in the morning!!!!
Sorry, we should disengage, as I am just not getting ANYTHING you are trying to say.
I used to pass through there all the time. My parents are from Scranton and I spent one semester in Millersville for the parties (at F&M.)
Mine cave in’s in that region . . . historic, and songs written about them . . .
Now that the days have started getting longer again, it won’t be long before we can hit the water skis.
http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bagley0106.jpg
Only got to Scranton a couple of times. It’s nice now. Seems to have survived by becoming another bedroom community of NYC. Pretty much what saved Allentown and the Lehigh Valley, too.
Can’t wait to build up my shoulder and back muscles again…
I’m sure we can get you a job beating that drum and steering the ski boat.
Hi Emerson. Thanks – very interesting.
Thunder Road was almost the anthem of a couple of my early teen years. Cars circled in the woods with radios blasting Tennesee long wave stations – Randy’s Record Mart out of Nashville and Ernies Record Mart out of Galletin. To say my parents disapproved would be an understatement.
Many of those cars belonged to boys who had quit school at 16 to buy them.
I heard it’s MUCH nicer now, too. One of my grandfathers died of black lung. The other lost a leg in the mines. Wonderful people, but not a cheery place when I was a kid.
We used to drive there from Bergen County through the Poconos before Rte. 8o was built. Rte. 46 then. I don’t know why all Jersey people talk about highways and exits all the time.
You;re from Music City?? I had no idea! OK, where else?
I think I’d have to work my way up to that.
GREAT FOOTAGE
night all – see ya next time
Suz slipped out? Must have missed that. G’nite Suzanne!!
It used to be a big place for anthracite mining and railroads. The coal mines provided a lot of jobs, but they were even more godawful than they are now.
and PPDC!
Way back at #164. Missed her, too. Goodnight Suzanne.
Also, goodnight PPDCUS, and anyone else I missed.
The group my uncle belonged to was the Lackawanna Club. Mostly a saloon, of which Scranton had many. But, you’re exactly right about conditions in the mines. That’s why the unions are still strong there.
That’s something you don’t see out here on the West Coast at all – people back east would often belong to some organization that would be their primary recreation place, like the Odd Fellows or whatever. I guess you don’t see that out here because people are more mobile.
Nope. Those night time radio stations covered most of the southeastern states late at night. Something about radio waves after dark… I’m a science idiot. Lemee see what I can find.
When I first moved west, it took me a while to adapt to my perception that it was much more difficult to get close to people in the west because either they just didn’t want to, or they valued their own space and freedom. I’ve heard that from alot of former east coasters in the 27 years since.
AM radio traveled much better at night. The waves bounced off the ionosphere better at night, and AM is dead simple to demodulate, even after it’s been crunched up against a charged layer of air molecules.
Oh, so you picked up Nashville stations on the radio?
WLAC Nashville. Pretty good explanation from wiki. It was hot. Lemme see if I can find Ernies.
to say nothing of all the UFO modulation in Tennessee. (I only think I’m kidding.)
Gah. It’s now another conservative talk radio station.
I remember once when we were vacationing in New England at our uncles’. Sometimes at night, we’d try to see what we could pick up on the AM. Sometimes we could pick up Southern stations, and a few times we even picked up European ones.
Pretty cool. I remember picking up distant stations from all over as we drove cross-country in the wee hours. It was extremely clear in Big Sky country, probably due to less obstructions?
Ah, reading more closely I see both Randys and Ernies were WLAC.
Congratulations Sunny on #200!
Whoa! Never heard of getting Europe.
Sunny, you should try that-you’re in New England.
That’s just sad – perhaps there isn’t much teen radio market anymore.
We’d call and call locally in hopes of making dedications and getting our names on the air — but not to WLAC. In those days an unauthorized long distance call would have grounded us forever.
I still have to remind myself that long distance is dirt cheap now, unless you get it from your phone provider, of course.
Well, I’m going to see how Dr. Who ends and then I’m going to go to sleep.
Goodnight, all.
g’mite Cujo.
nite cujo
Oh boy! I never win anything!!!!
Remind me what my prize is *g*
Eternal admiration from all of your friends at The Lake.
Oh yeah, and the aging process reverses itself.
Now that’s a prize *g*
Sorry so long getting back, firefox just quit on me and I had to reappear in opera. Second time this week at LLN. Past time for a new computer.
Emerson, I’ve no intent to mislead about where I am.. I just don’t post it online because I maintain laughable online privacy aspirations. At the yahoo place I’m sunny nobility – no caps, but with an underscore between the two words. Looks like joe_blow. Drop me a note.
For prize number two I’d singlehandedly post to 500. However, lurk might not be amused..
Now there’s an artist with staying power. There’s enough versions of that song on YouTube to track its history. I wrote a short bit about it a year or so back with links, and here it is:
A few days ago, I found myself listening to old Bruce Springsteen songs on YouTube. One of the surprises of the exploration–if you care about these things, this is worth listening to, and who knows how long it will be up–is that YouTube has a whole series of versions of the song which finally became "Thunder Road". There’s an early version, title "Wings for Wheels", different melody, slightly different lyrics, starts folky, ends jazzy, beat relatively lightly stated, Clarence Clemons playing sax through the whole song. Intermediate version: lyrics finished, song’s picking up speed, piano the only accompaniment (Springsteen plays harmonica at points), much more strongly stated beat, slowing and speeding in the middle, the famous hooky driving beat emerging and fading at the end. Finished studio version [sorry--link taken down]: after a brief harmonica intro it’s all uptempo. First verse, piano accompaniment only, second verse more piano chords+rhythm guitar, third verse the drums and a driving beat. From there on, more instrumentation and more speed: by the fifth and final verse there’s a bit of vocal accompaniment, and it goes out in that famous burst of piano chords and sax. If you’re up for one more version of it, here’s a live version with an intro which explains some of the lyrics ("and I never saw the movie I only saw the poster in the lobby of the theater") and Springsteen hamming it up.
OK. I’m exactly the same way. People laugh at the lengths I go to in hopes of protecting my privacy-especially the kids. They look at me like an alien and say things like, “the whole idea is to let people know where you are!?”
I won’t even join facebook. :-)
facebook ….gasp…. fanning *my* face!
This is the only place I’ve posted since usenet and mail lists :-)
On that retrograde note, I’ll say nite all.
I can’t believe it! Your last link is the show I was talking about in post #110. I was sitting in row 22 and taped it over WNEW-FM in NY.
I have never seen this on you tube before, but this is the very BEST example of being there in the early days when Bruce’s enthusiasm was so viciously contagious!
I cannot express how emotionally thrilling it is to see this. Especially when my best friend and I were talking about it by phone today. Thank you very much. :-)
g’nite Sunny. sleep well.
