“It’s a moment of truth when you realize what you believe,” Hume says. “I realized I believed in God.” He had been “a fallen Christian,” Hume says, but “it was such a devastating loss I was thinking, ‘How in the world am I going to get through this?’ I had this odd thought that I would get a phone call: ‘Brit, this is God.’ I had this idea that somehow I was going to be okay and God was going to rescue me.”

Why such a promising young journalist took his life was a mystery. “The proximate cause was the arrest for DUI, which he believed, for reasons that are not entirely clear, was going to be ruinous. . . . He was manifestly depressed about it.”

Jobs, jobs, jobs! That needs to be tattood onto the forehead of every politician and media presenter.

Until employment is restored to full, the only kind of party that any politician is likely to receive is of the tea variety.

It’s going to take a lot more than a haphazard jungle of earmarks to fix employment. We need a credible national industrial policy backed up by large long term funding commitment.

The first things I’d take aim at are our oil import dependencies and related pollution generation. That means building out our rail system to move a much greater % of our freight and beefing up our public transport systems with more light rail. Obama did take some first steps in this area in the stimulus package but they are timid first steps. Republicans and Blue Dogs are the obvious roadblocks on this.

Maybe cap&trade will make all this happen but I’m not sold on the idea that market solutions actually work completely as advertized. I tend to clutch my wallet every time I head Alan Kudlow say “magic of the market” or “market innovation”.
