We’re now well into week three of the National Freakout over the failed undiebomber plot, and the GOP’s favorite bullshit talking point — that Obama doesn’t say the words “war on terror” or “terrorism” — has reached a new level of crazy.
“I think one main thing [to improve anti-terrorism measures] would be to – just himself to use the word terrorism more often,” said King, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee.
So it’s not just that Obama’s supposed reluctance to use the word “terrorism” or call it a “war” (which is again, objectively bullshit) is somehow putting us in danger. But to King — the very fact of his doing so will actually save lives.
Don’t suppose it’s worth pointing out to these morans that the whole point of terrorism is to whip up fear, so having the president go on national teevee and say “terra terra terra” every day is giving al Qaeda exactly what it wants.

When you couple the non-stop “booga booga” from folks like King and add the de-legitimization from groups like the birthers, you have a perfect recipe for mass hysteria. Was yesterday’s response to the honey bomb evidence that we are there? I look for more hysteria-based medical problems during the “strike” the teabaggers have planned for Jan. 20.

King has been saying these kinds of things for years, it’s how he got on the committee and the red meat his constituents crave. He wanted to keep saying 9/11 over and over but he was out of the City and another guy who couldn’t get along with his wife snuck in and snatched the copyright while he wasn’t looking.

If they wanted him they would stake out all of the dialysis machines in that part of the world and track down whether there were any that were privately owned. The cost would be equal to a few minutes worth of expenses in Iraq. A cynic might think they really don’t want some of these cases to go to court.

Yeah, saying the word doesn’t diminish terrorism. However, the act of saying the word confirms its existence. It’s a kind of truthtelling.

Really, the valient men and women (and children) of the 3rd Cong. district who wlaked through a cloud of smoke and debris for several days after 9-11 (the prevailing breeze blows to the east) and watched the military planes flying over our heads and navy destryoers patrolling our north and south shores are not the cowards Pete King thinks we are.

The sad thing , is that no one wants to accept the truth. We can create all kinds of defenses to protect ourselves , we can spend millions of dollars on defense systems , but we are still not safe. As long as there are people who will want to do us harm , they will find ways to defeat our defenses.
We will never be completely safe .

As a NYCer, I did notice that the rest of the country seemed scardier than NYCers.
Although I knew nothing about terrorism in advance, I instantly assumed that after we were safer afterward than before. It didn’t seem highly probable that another attack of that magnitude (or even a smaller one) could be launched by some Arabs sitting in the poorest country in the world.

just thinking about how our culture has become small, petty and cowardly and the phrase “undiebomber” is what got me there. quite a while back but still within living memory, the “bikini” bathing suit was first marketed. it was named for the giant coral reef In the pacific which the U.S. vaporized with an above gound H-bomb test. I wasnt around for that but i was around for more than half the cold war which i remeber very well. The fear of nuclear apocalypse and total species extinction was very real, and IMHO a much larger threat than terroist threats, but the culture of those days was quite a bit bolder,with a better sense of humor, less bitchy and pants wetty than we are about all the war on “ter’r”. I doubt victorias secret is going to market any “explosive” bottoms any time soon. im sure that is in part due to fabric/skin ratio being such that there is nothing left to reveal, but if there were im sure we wouldnt be seeing anything of that kind. I think all of the “seriousness “of the punditry keeps the culture and climate of fear pumped up and that benefits “them”, and hurts

I don’t remember Peter King using the word “terrorism” that much when his IRA buddies were setting off bombs, running guns, participating in sectarian murder and firing mortars at army bases and police forces. I do remember him being described as a terrorist collaborator by judges, though.

We could have saved so much money and precious lives of soldiers by simply saying “Terror”, “Terrorism” and “Terrorists” everyday in DC, without sending one single soldier overseas – plus we would all be able to go through any airport without getting our bodies scanned.
