Whoo Hoo. Cartoonies!
And cartoonish:
ubetcha loohoo — how’s socal tonight?
*eye rolling* any excuse to humilate and demean — sheesh they are showing their inner ugly
Shhhh!
I’m trying to watch a toon, here…
Pass the Cheerios and that banana, please…
*passing them down to ya* ya want milk with that?
The patience of animators in the ’30s…
Yes please.
*sliding it down the bar*
the animators were uncredited.. i found their info on imdb — the link in the date in the post.
geez, where’s everyone at?
Ub Iwerks was the other half of the Disney genius-really the draftsman side.
Hi Suz and pups.
hey emerson — i didn’t know that. i thought it was very well done for such an early date (’34). no wonder
I like the scarecrow! Bet whoever did his voice wasn’t well paid.
a little background
http://www.digitalmediafx.com/Features/ubiwerks.html
Warm here, Suz. Hoping for more rain.
hey all… haven’t watched the toon yet, don’t give away the plot.
hey sunny — zipping lips
we are supposed to get another rainstorm in late sun/early monday. should hammer washington more than oregon but the north oregon coast is likely to get pretty wet (again)
Hi Suz and everyone…Jack Frost indeed, it’s 15F in the outermost boroughs of Dee Cee.
hey ll — brrrr old man winter is in your neighborhood
thanks emerson… wow
pat powers — in that article — in uncredited in this cartoon
Interesting. Thanks!
Old man winter has definitely arrived! One nice thing is that the moon and stars look so much brighter. Tonight, with a few clouds backlit, looks awesome!
Well, this is the opposite of last night, huh?
Wow, just watched the toon . . .
’34 . . . and each movement a different panel . . . imagine what must have been what, hundreds, or thousands of hours of pen and ink . . . . each movement, a different page . . . . wow.
Great pic, Suz . . . boggles the mind on how they did it then . . . I still prefer it to the digital age, too . . . toon wise. ;-)
I’ve been playing with Blingee.
no kidding loohoo — last night musta been a fluke — i’ve never had that many comments even when we live blogged that senate overnight thingie.
DADT, General?
Hi LL! About the same here. It’s supposed to snow every day this week, or so I heard.
Hi Suz, great toon.
I got distracted, someone was Wrong on the Internet.
There are stores that sell the original cells. (Not cheap!) Yes, there are thousands in the full length movies.
Wow! I just finished watching — that Jack Frost is such a scamp!
Right, I thought that idea was a tad gay.
hey margot — i thought jane broke the internets. *laughing*
all week? every day? shrudder
hey teddy — how’s sf tonight?
hey larue — how’s sac?
hey ce — you bundled up with a fire going?
Hi Margot! No snow here this weekend, but we’re still seeing the leftovers from the big storm two weekends ago…dirty gray lumps, ugh.
And a tad stupid. As if a 17 or 29 year old couldn’t be planning to blow his nuts off.
dirty snow is so sad and ugly
You got way more than we did, and it rained on Christmas, washing it all away.
It is, Suz — I keep holding out hope for a warm-up to get rid of it, but it looks like we’re in the big chill for a few days yet.
Hey Suz! I’m so bundled that I have four layers on, as does MrCE. It is so cold tonight, at 10 degrees, we can’t have a fire. If we had glass doors to close when going up, it would be ok. At these temps, we can’t leave a hole in the living room. Sigh, miss the fire! But many candles going.
What a great read, thanks . . .
It rained on Christmas where I was too (way SE of where I live) but it stayed just cold enough that we still have a bit of snowpack NW of Dee Cee.
local news said a city in south dakota got to -30 today — and that was not counting the wind chill. is that what is headed your way?
It’s really ugly when dirty snow melts a bit and then re-freezes.
What do you mean you can’t leave a hole in the living room?
Cool, quiet. Oregon?
They say yes — local forecast says lower temps by Friday. Brrrr, and our kitchen ceiling is torn away for now. I need flannel sheets and am missing fires.
a good no wind day but overcast with a damp chill to the air all day. was so windy that one of the heavy wooden adirondack chairs on the front deck was blown to the other side of the deck against the railing.
Lightly cloudy, foggy, lo 50′s . . . no where enough rain given all that’s passed the left coast heading east.
Saw where the Central Sierra watershed is only 85% to date, Southern Sierra is 100%, Nor Cal is only 78% or less.
El Nino, or La Nina, ain’t producin for CA yet . . . . but we got 3 good months of rains to hope for.
What we need is the snow, by March rains will wash out to the oceans . . . snowmelts are what keep us filled thru summer, as you know . . . sigh.
Yep Loo Hoo, everywhere you go around here you see that stuff piled up against the sides of the roadways — and as cold as it’s been, it’ll be there a while :-(
That behavior would certainly be at odds with the entire 97 Virgin deal, wouldn’t it?
Hey Loo Hoo,
If one does not have glass doors on the open fireplace to close when leaving, it leaves a “hole” in the house to cool the fire and freeze the house.
supposedly you are supposed to get all the storms we don’t get when in this type of weather pattern. fingers and toes crossed
*waving at Teddy*
Ub Iwerks
How does one pronounce that?
hey nonplussed — how ya been dood?
Betcha Token could do without chairs moving on their own.
I’ve heard tomorrow nite in northern NJ, the temperature will be high-teens (aren’t all teens high?), winds of 25-40 mph, and a wind chill of -2.
Pretty dam brisk.
Great point! I hadn’t “connected the dots”. (Just like our intelligence services)
you-be eye-works? is how i say it in my mind when i read it so its probably wrong
Grateful Dead — Cold Rain And Snow
heya double-ell
Just like it sounds! *G*
I still don’t get it. Wouldn’t the house freeze with no fire then? I guess I’m just thinking why would fire bring ice…
baby its cold outside
if the damper is open it would let all the hot air in the room go up the chimney when the fire went out. can’t leave the damper open when ya go to bed and can’t close the damper if there is a fire going.
Let me just say,
a cozy fire tonight will bring one freezing ass living room tomorrow morning. We have to choose, cozy tonight? Or pay the piper tomorrow. Heh!
Always torn between that version/style and This One, From Their First Album
Wasn’t till 1972 I saw Katie Hettersly And The Arkansas Sheiks (her husband Tom) just slam an appalachian dulcimer, sing in the high mountain way, and I learnt it was an old trad mountain tune . . .
One of my fav songs, camp jams, or anywhere, to this day . . . The Dead, they rocked the grass, they did.
Excellent! That is just it, thanks, Suz.
Yes. That’s a main reason I looked it up a while ago. Thought it had 2B an alias, but all he changed was the spelling from Ubbe Iwwerks (for some reason.)
Werks for me :)
Hey y’all! Happy New Year!
Hey Larue, check this out!
hi Suz
Okay, I get it. And the glass fireplace screen would do what?
gotta say he’s pretty skittish about using the front deck when its windy. he prefers going out the back deck off the kitchen — tis more sheltered from the wind by the house — nothing between the front deck and the bay.
hey that guy — how ya doing tonight?
hey ppd — how’s the south south bay?
Hey Hey!
act as a damper on the front of the fireplace. they could close the glass doors and prevent the hot air from going up the chimney and the fire in teh fireplace would not be affected.
Loo Hoo, I’m just going to have to bring you to Cleveland!
You can’t beat Pigpen’s contribution to the older version ;-) That’s good stuff indeed.
Just relaxing as the full moon begins to wane
Hi Suz. My dad was a cartoonist for Disney until they booted him for trying to organize. Had to be spotless.
BMAZ post was lively as you were there, When we had the primary wars here I predicted especially after his FISA vote that Mr. O was not moving our way. But he completely jumped ship to support BUSHCO policy with no accountability. It has been awful to watch him sell us down the road.
Thanks, Dear Suzanne for the support.
Hey! I send you a “packet” this week.
I slept too much today but I didn’t sleep much last night. My sleep cycle is AFU. I need to get it settled tmorrow as I return to work Monday. Been nice to be off for a bit.
been a good day to relax — the holidays are just about over and i’m enjoying being able to recharge my batteries before monday.
Time for shut-eye here in the chilly east…I bid you good night. Thanks Suz, ‘night all!
18 here, going to 14.
Power bill came a couple of days ago… haven’t opened it yet.
sweet ce — lookiing forward to the recipes
hey bb — how cool to grow up with a dad who did cartoons.
i always hated that having to return to going to sleep early after being away from work. i never did alarm clocks well and just couldn’t figure out how to get myself to go to sleep when i wasn’t tired. i would lay in bed and watch the clock tick until around 3am knowing i had to get up at 5:45 and not one minute later.
g’nite ll — stay warm
That’s a cat I’ve never heard of . . . . still livin the blues, Memphis Style, it seems . . .*G*
i remember those days — am so glad my electrical is included in my rent. brrrrrrr
HA! I remember going into the basement with my dad as he shoveled coal into the furnace. By morning it was getting really cold, and we’d stand on the grate above the furnace to stay warm. Blew the nightdress up!
I still marvel at their first album, with Golden Road to open . . . *G*
Forget when it was I first heard them do the newer arrangement of Cold Rain And Snow, but I recall being blown away and greatly pleased . . . likely a late 70′s or early 80′s NYEve Show somewhere in the Bay Area . . *G*
.
That was a fascinating post, BB. I just don’t know how to find time to get through it all. It’s not only that there were more than 300 posts, but a lot of them were SO long. Killed me that I could only read about 70.
..
My sleep cycle is screwy too since I retired. But that’s okay. Sunday nights are my favorite, not worrying about finishing up everything for work and getting to bed “on time”.
I’m just happy to have found FDL since the primary of Liarman. What a race that primary was. Our greatest success!!!!
Nighters, ll.
Loo Hoo now just showing she hits all the century marks. ‘Nuff said. *g*
tis the best part of being retired loohoo. go to bed when ya wanna. get up when ya wanna. no more ‘shoulds’ to interfere with how ya wanna live life.
BMAZ brought it, and the comments were indeed of high quality, recapturing what happened, how FDL presented itself, and more . . . interspersed with some trolling and gibberish . . . but mostly a really quality post, and comments on the issue at hand . . .
she’s a natural — gets most of ‘em for sure
***G***
Did you read it all, Larue? How long did it take you? I mean it took me more than an hour to just get 70 in.
Where’s Evelyn Wood when I need her?
No doubt last month’s bill will force me to reconsider my thermostat settings. So I’m stalling :-)
T is a great singer. He’s worth looking into.
And the sense of doing what you want-and not doing what you don’t want-is overwhelming. I can’t tell you how many staff parties I went to out of feeling obligated. Now, if it’s something I don’t want to do, I’m totally comfortable saying no.
Hi to you in . We had a warm sunny day with NE breeze’ Sculled across the bay then went to a crowded hot yoga class for an hour and half. Stayed up reading law last night til 3:30 am. Helping attorney with research.
She hit #400 at about 10:15 last nite on your thread, Suz.
i got english credit in high school by taking an elective speed reading course. if i had known that i had to write a forking paper on each book i read i wudda gone for the regular noun verb sentence structure class.
but i did learn to read fast. always a good thing.
wondering how low ya have to go when ya are already wearing layers. i hated getting the pg&e bill each winter almost as much as my mom did her electrical bill in the summer when they were living in palm desert.
ya’ll blew me away last nite. i couldn’t believe that post hit over 400 — wowsa
I saw EW says she keeps hers at 64. (In this post)
I always thought I read at an average rate-maybe not.
at the cabin i kept my furnace at 55 in the winter (or tried to). i now consider that training for living on the coast up here — and heating with wood. keeps the living room toasty but i gotta say it gets chilly in some of the other rooms.
Good for you! Are you retired and helping the attorney as a side job? Which bay do you live near?
And we chose Mary Mc to replace DiFi!!!!!!!!
i’ve slowed down with age — and aging eyes :)
We almost had her convinced to run! She can be had.
gotta keep the pressure on….
Hi Emerson. That post was my breakfast and it absorbed the morning I stayed in bed until I caught up. It was one salient discussion defining the moment and where does FDL go from here. Lot of discussion about dumping the Dems too. Some tough policy decisions ahead; If you register Independent can’t vote in the primaries; So how do you primary a Blue dog?
There’s a way to fix that: cover the coals with the ashes. Insulates them, and the heat doesn’t escape so much. Also has the advantage that you don’t have to start with a cold fireplace the next day. With a good backlog (the big logs that go in the back), you can keep it going for months, just by adding a log or two every evening, and maybe a new backlog once or twice.
Yeah, but you have the youngest teeth in town. *g* Besides, you were speed-reading legalese, which automatically places you in Albert Brooks’ “Big Brain Club.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF897aNyxSs
I noticed that too. She’s a better woman than I.
i’ve never been able to figure out how to bank a fire — every day i get up and have to start it anew. i’ve adjusted the dampers etc… just don’t have the touch *sigh*
the youngest teeth — totally cracked me up dood (laughing)
good point-it can’t be done. I think I had just reached the post saying a mass toobz movement to Indy would catch the Dems attention.
unfortunately, the d’s think the i’s are to the right of center — i think we still have to keep pushing from the left
I’m good. Drinking beer late at night to piss off the Medicos. The good news is that I have solved the Health Care crisis! I present the Beer Solution…
Our problem is simple: We are merely allergic to Physicians! Consider if you will the following! The more MDs we encounter on a professional basis, the greater the number of nagging pains, sprains, and previously unknown (and rare, unheard of) medical conditions afflict us. Apparently, Physicians feel as if they have failed if they allow you to leave their office without some new affliction Prior to seeing any Doctors at all, we are generally in what is considered to be perfect health. We are now in possession of confirmational data (Culled from the Medical Histories, or lack thereof, of a focus group comprised of a randomly selected representative group of Citizens) and it is readily apparent that this Nation no longer requires Health Deform of any sort!
Our fellow Americans can rejoice, we are saved, thanks to this important Medical news! We can now, as a Nation, invest additional
poor people’s moneyour precious tax dollars on more important National Priorities, such as killing, maiming, displacing and/or otherwise alienating Stanis of some type over there in something-Stan.How about you, Suzanne? That “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child was sure in sync with your post the other night. I sent OFA a long missive when they asked why I didn’t want any more of their “Hey, Brother! Can you spare $25?” letters. I guess they have assumed that mantle from Moveon.org, I’ve always wondered how they settled on $25 (or if they even asked everyone for the same amount).
Are they fitting better?
i’m fair to middlin. sometimes the perfect song will pop into my brain and it certainly did for last nite’s post. i really don’t like being played. took a while to be able to write it without any swears tho :)
i think the $25 is their attempt to have a ‘low number’ that wouldn’t scare folks off.
No doubt. The new indys are from right of center, at least from the last election. They didn’t want to be associated with bushco. The Dems have already lost them, which is speed deletion.
yup. mouth is still healing so they will need more tweaking as everything settles into place and relaxes again. of course, my gums are still tender so the building up tolerence is slow going…. no more gagging tho :) :) :)
so busy trying to figure out how to pick up voters from the other side they don’t notice their base leaving…
I don’t know the answer to that, wish I did. In the general election I plan to be very sparing with my votes.
This is funny! The funniest signs of ’09.
ha — the tired of this sign one was a hoot!
That’s why I think Jane’s maneuver was so brilliant. You have to change the game/ And even the MSM will be forced to cover THAT story.
Hiya Suze… did you see the article I put up at The Seminal about airline safety? It’s interesting that the TSA is spending gazillions and yet the airlines are more interested in overworking their crews which is more likely to get folks killed than any terrorist attack. Sad.
i’ve not seen it… going over to take a look now jo….
Healthcare reform for me is conforming my lifestyle to healthy diet and attacking the weak areas of my body. Increasing activity levels more and more.
Today I kept up with people 40 to 50 years younger and was probably an average in the group performance wise. I have two weak spots to heal, back bending and the left knee which is yeilding slow but sure to my demands.
I am positioning myself to have a good year. You do the same and we all will be better off despite our politicos
holy shit jofish — i had no idea… dayam i’m glad i don’t fly. this is just so wrong recommended
time for me to head out folks. wall has been hit *yawning*
g’nite all and thanks for lettng me hang out with ya tonight
I liked “No amnety”, “honk for English.”
We have some really moxy political experts here that know those ins and outs. Phoenix Woman is one and lots of others to advise us on how to be most effective. Pelosi worked the new critters we helped and pressured them to not be so progressive. The Hill structure of who gets on what committees who votes for who’s pork is where the rubber meets the road. I am no expert but have learned a bit here at the LAKE.
Suze… it’s a bit of an eye-opener, isn’t it? The airlines trade-off between safety and profit pretty much makes all that security kabuki by the TSA sort of pointless, doesn’t it?
Thanks for the rec.. :)
Lollipop dreams, Suz.
Hiya Loo Hoo… Happy New Year!! How’s the greater metro area where you are tonight?
Excellent diary, Jo Fish. I can’t imagine why a pilot world work that hard in such dangerous work (if they’re exhausted) for so little money.
Crazyness. And far more dangerous than the undiebomber.
I’m actually in a rural part of N. San Diego County. It’s really warm tonight. 69 in the house with no heat on!
HNY to you!
Good diary Jo Fish! And depressing.
G’nite all.
Good morning, pups. It’s just MoDo and Mr. Kristof since Mr. Rich and The Moustache of Wisdom are off today. MoDo has produced a thing called “New Year’s Resolutions” which may or may not be one of her fantasy pieces. This may be fact-based, however, since it doesn’t have that wild-eyed and frenzied quality of most of her fantasy work. She claims Janet Napolitano, the homeland security chief, answers questions about the Christmas terrorist plot and how to keep the nation safe. Mr. Kristof, in “World’s Healthiest Food,” says there’s scarcely a form of foreign aid more cost-effective than getting micronutrients like folic acid into the food supply.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got chocolate croissants for the first Sunday of the New Year. It’s 24° here now, which is positively Arctic for us. Of course our incredible weather talking hairdos neglected to indicate a plunge in the temps, so since it was 48 degrees yesterday morning I didn’t cover the lettuces. GRRRRR…. Have a great day.
