What Should Medicare-For-All Candidates Agree To?

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday December 10, 2009 3:30 pm

I’ve been casting around for suggestions from people I trust about what kind of a platform we should ask Medicare for All candidates to agree upon. We want to avoid the problem we have right now — people like Charles Rangel who are cosponsors of H.R. 676 until it doesn’t matter. I’m sure the $1.4 million he’s taken from insurance interests has nothing to do with it.

Here are the initial suggestions. Please add yours in the comments.

“Deal” Could Put Joe Lieberman In Charge of Regulating Your Health Insurance

By: Jon Walker Thursday December 10, 2009 2:30 pm

Thats right, Lieberman, the biggest champion of the health insurance industry in the Senate, will chair the committee that oversees this “alternative” to the public option.

Got a Question on the Jobs Crisis? Ask Richard Trumka

By: Tula Connell Thursday December 10, 2009 1:30 pm

The AFL-CIO has proposed a five-point plan to immediately address the nation’s jobs crisis, and Trumka took our message to the White House last week at President Obama’s Jobs Summit.

But we need to keep the heat on. It’s up to the grassroots to outshout Wall Street.

We need an economic game plan that creates jobs which support families. Because, as one person noted in the questions, “We can’t just flip burgers for one another.”

Pelosi Abandons Public Option; Grijalva Says He’ll Vote “No”

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday December 10, 2009 11:50 am

We thank Representative Grijalva for his strong leadership throughout this fight. If Nancy Pelosi tries to pass a bill without a public option, we will be thanking him and those who stick by him with a fundraiser and GOTV efforts in their districts during the next election.

For those who decide that it’s in the best interest of their communities to vote for a bill that has insurance lobbyists crowing “we win,” we’ll be recruiting and supporting challengers against them who embrace Medicare for All.

They can’t represent WellPoint to the detriment of their constituents and hold a strong Democratic seat uncontested.

House Takes Up Financial Reform Bill After Concessions to Moderates

By: David Dayen Thursday December 10, 2009 10:59 am

Last night, there was a breakthrough of sorts, which involved the House leadership basically giving the New Dems what they wanted.

Prescription for Disaster: Death of Public Option Could Depress Democratic Base in 2010

By: Jon Walker Thursday December 10, 2009 9:56 am

It is time for a fair warning to all Democrats currently in Congress: Don’t be shocked when your bases does not turn out next year.

Kansas City Free Clinic: Haunting Video from the Heartland

By: Eve (nyceve) Gittelson Thursday December 10, 2009 8:58 am

Many of the people I met today are working full time and simply cannot afford the exorbitant monthly health insurance premium, so they go without. The choice is stark. Health insurance or rent, food and clothing for the kids.

[Ed. Note: Eve is in Kansas City today, helping out and talking to folks at the free health care clinic organized by the National Association of Free Clinics with funding raised in large part by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann. MSNBC will be streaming their own video from KC starting at noon EST; Eve has more video of her own after the jump. If you need help finding affordable medical assistance in your area, NAFC has this directory of free clinics.]

Reid Says No Time for Conference, but Takes Off for Fundraiser

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday December 10, 2009 8:01 am

Reid’s flim-flamming arrogance is infuriating. He thinks his power as Majority Leader is to be used for nothing better than his own personal advancement. He won’t use it to push Joe Lieberman and Blanche Lincoln, but campaign cash? The whole country can wait!

Call likely Nevada Democratic voters and make sure they know what he is doing.

Mike Stark, Back on the Hill for FDL

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday December 10, 2009 7:23 am

With the insurance companies crying “we win,” members of Congress are either going to give them what they want or stop the looting. We hope Keith Ellison will be there when it counts. We already know Tammy Baldwin won’t.

Keith Ellison’s phone: (612) 522-1212 (MN), (202) 225-4755 (DC)

Tammy Baldwin’s phone: (608) 258-9800 (WI), (202) 225-2906 (DC)
