In case you were wondering, the failed bombing of Flight 253 is all Obama’s fault.
The effect of firing DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano would be symbolic only. [...] As long as the boss remains invincibly callow toward the threat of terrorism, his underlings are likely to reflect that mindset.
The people now in charge of our government believe Clinton-era counterterrorism was a successful model. They start from the premise that terrorism is a crime problem to be managed, not a war to be won.
Apparently the right “model” is to suffer the most catastrophic attack in our nation’s history, followed by the Anthrax and DC Sniper killings, then launch two hugely expensive, bloody and unsuccessful wars.
Ashcroft’s view: organized Islamic terrorists want to kill Americans in a holy war.
Napolitano’s view: Islamic terrorist attacks are merely “man caused disasters” by disturbed individuals — who should be assumed to be acting alone as criminals, not terrorists, despite credible evidence — while peaceful “rightwing extremists” should be given extra scrutiny on the assumption they could well be terrorists.
Peaceful rightwing extremists like Tim McVeigh, who was responsible for the bloodiest act of terrorism in US history before Bush and Cheney failed to protect America on 9/11.

Good luck with that meme wingnuts…
The shoebomber and the anthrax killings have fallen into the memory hole.
Does anybody else remember Ann Coulter using air quotes to describe Al Qaeda when Clinton bombed their camps in 1998?
Peter King sounded almost wistful when he talked about the Xmas Day Massacre that might have been, and how that would have been all Obama’s fault. But since 9/11 happened on Clinton’s watch, I guess W rightly escaped all blame for it.
How soon the Wingnuts forget…….I guess Obama was President in 2001, and the Democrats controlled BOTH houses of Congress? Oh, and let’s make sure to ignore the big, bold headline in the President’s Daily Brief that screamed “BIN LADEN DETERMINED TO STRIKE ON U.S. SOIL.” I guess the Clinton administration screwed that up, too…….
Well if you call Abu Graid and what Blackwater did war crimes well we ruled Iraq we were responsible for the law after we invaded oh wait thats would be government paid for and in the case of abu Graid ordered terrorism.
It would be fairly clear that, if this failed, lone-idiot attempt at bringing down a plane “happened on Obama’s watch”, and is therefore his fault, that 9/11 “happened on Bush’s watch”, and is therefore his fault. Napolitano was hardly handed a classified briefing from a CIA presidential briefer entitled “Abdulmutallab Determined to Strike in US”, for that matter.
Paying attention to “conservatives” and Republicans on national security is hopeless. They’ve idolized one of the most failed national security presidents in American history and their only goal is lionizing this figure along with their party, not instituting a sane and effective regime of national security.
Whats the latest on the anthrax case? Was is weaponized anthrax from a top secret lab if so Bush was really lax on security.
Speaking of lax on security just how does a gay Ho on the net get in the WH press core after 9/11? Just what were there back ground check procedures any friend of Bush doesn’t need a check?
If Obama cared about American security, he would have invaded the Netherlands long ago.
So according to the GOP Obama is responsible for all the failed attempts at terror too?
You obviously didn’t get Mary Matalin’s memo about 9/11 being retroactively rescheduled into the Clinton administration.
Maybe it would be a good idea to whittle down the list of 550,000 potential terrorists around the world. Maybe if the Bush-generated volume of potential terrorists were not so enormous, we might have noticed this guy. When there are that many on some list, it is hard to know who might be a real threat.
I blame Clinton, of course.
Nice headlline BT. “A Failed Terror Attack Would Never Happen on Bush’s Watch.”
That would be because the terror attacks on Bush’s watch were successful.
I’m surprised we’ve not heard from Darth Cheney yet, and/or his Screechwoman daughter.
Does the GOP really want more anti terror laws under a Dem? Because Glen Beck would already be shut down in any country with Hate Speech laws.
Any time there was a hate crime against immigrants that resulted in a child being killed any normal country not afraid of its White Extremists would have pulled Glen Beck off the air.
I want Obama to do something about this! I want the Righty Blogs to stop pretending it never happened!
Terrorism is Terrorism even if the victim is Brown! Laws are for everyone equally or none of us have the protection of the law!

they must be bunkered down in that undisclosed location
No, they’re right! Under Bush’s watch, the terror attck would not have failed. It would have been a “Successful Terror Attack”.
Andy, focus. The Clinton era approach (WHICH YOU WERE A HELPFUL PART OF) = no succesful Al Q attacks on US soil. So far the Obama approach = no successful attcks on US soil.
The Bushco approach = huge horrific attack on US soil and, if it turns out that the anthrax attacks were Al Q, ongoing attacks on US soil.
Andy, why would you want to diminish the signifigance of your own work? And is was good work.
Folks, we’re watching the pattern repeat itself.
Democrats should be unified behind the PR spin that “REPUBLICANS ARE POLITICIZING TERRORISM! FOR SHAME! FOR SHAME!!!” and forcing Republicans to qualify and hedge their comments. Instead, there is no such pushback, and Republicans are once again given a pass by the media *and* the Dems to demagogue this event and say evil things with no downside or risk to themselves politically whatsoever.
Pathetic.
The Al Quieda linked Terrorist goes on a plane with a detonator that doesn’t work does anyone else find that funny?
I think he is a wanna be or a plant.
In a weak moment yesterday, I flipped by CNN and actually heard Matalin yammering on about 9/11 being Clinton’s fault. Please excuse me, but I just can’t be nice about this: She’s fuckin’ nuts.
Yeah, sorry…….I must’ve missed that little bit of revisionist history. Because we all know that nothing bad EVER happens on the Republicans’ watch…..no terrorist attacks, no banking system collapses, no economic crises (twice)…..it’s all the fault of them darned Dems.
Talk to the Main Stream Media and the Obama WH press secretary. We have a tendency to get random here.
It makes it easier to find new answers if you sometimes or have some members step away from problems.
Wonder when the memo will be out that has Katrina occurring in the 90′s? Jeepers, probably have to rewrite some Almanacs over that one.
I’m sure the rightwing Ministry of Truth is working on that right now.
http://borderreporter.com/2009/06/minuteman-vigilantes-tied-to-home-invasion/
So I wonder if Sarah will endorse a GOPer who pals around with child killers!
LOL, yeah maybe.
Or maybe they’re ok with just sticking to the “It was the D Mayor of New Orleans and D Governor of La’s fault for the lack of federal response to Katrina” line.
A RICO case against the Minute Men would be a great way to stop Terror! Will our Brothers on the Righty Blogs support us? Or is Racism a more important vote getter for them than concern for stopping terrorism?
Lets call hate crime laws domestic terrorism laws.
Maybe they’re still on Christmas Island.
I attribute any failures of the Clinton method to having bed wetting asswipes like Andy McCarthy involved. Andy is right, that should have never been allowed.
Yes, treating terrorism like a crime doesn’t work, only declaring war does, like George W Bush, after he declared war on Iraq, we never had a terrorist attack again!
Even when you try to write something rational in support of their insanity as a satire, it’s impossible to make any sense.
I always want to ask the right wingers: After eight years of the “war on terror”, if attacks are still occurring, doesn’t that mean we lost the war? Or are doing one lousy job of it?
I mean you’d assume that if they’re this devoted to war, they’d want to think that we’re at least sort of good at it.
yesterday Bill Kristol was disgusted that the crotch bomber was arrested and read his rights. I guess he should have been shot on sight, which would have been most unfortunate for the sick guy on the Sunday flight.
If we are going to ally with the Right on some issues they are going to have to stop acting crazy and appealing to racism I because I can say the exact same thing about Shawna Forde, or Darth about KBR electrocutting our troops in the shower.
But I don’t because the law applies to everyone equally or none of us are protected. There are lines we Lefties don’t cross but the White Extremists in this country do all the time!
Last time I checked, neither al Qaeda nor the Taliban had [1] an air force, [2] a navy, [3] mechanized armored units, [4] heavy artillery battalions, nor [5] satellite surveillance systems — reportedly capable of “reading a license plate number from 80,000 ft.”
Notwithstanding, these scruffy (albeit 50 ft tall) irregulars, armed to a great extent with only the crudest weapons this side of rocks and spears continue to bedevil our trillion dollar a year DOD.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Yes but I mean, aside from the utter immorality of the whole idea, just the logic they try to use makes your head spin. Reading those NRO clips, I imagine a conversation with them going along the lines of:
NRO: Obama and his administration want to treat terrorism as a crime, which leads to more attacks.
Me: Why?
NRO: Because this isn’t crime, it’s war. So declaring war is the only way to stop it, not prosecuting.
Me: Declaring war. Like the invasion of Iraq?
NRO: Damn right.
Me: So, we did that. We declared war and invaded Iraq.
NRO: Right.
Me: And we just had another terrorist attack.
…
Now, here’s the place I’d really love to hear the response. Because at this point, you have two or three possible even remotely plausible answers, every single one of which involves the idea of perpetual war in some way.
I mean if we can’t “win” a war in eight years, for Pete’s sake, isn’t it time to understand that it’s not war after all? If the “country” we think we’re fighting is this slippery entity that pops out and slithers into some other country every time we think we’ve eradicated it somewhere– then what’s the point of calling it “war” and invading someone else? When each time we do, we create more terrorists, more hatred, more recruiting?
Someone, and I don’t remember who, sorry, said way back there somewhere that invading Iraq to fight terrorism was like going somewhere and building a really dirty hospital to fight infections.
I’ve suffered from motion sickness my entire life. For the most part, I’ve conquered planes (at least the larger jets) but there are still moments when, no matter my best preparations and dramamine, water, etc, I’m going to be sick. Turbulence, stress, whatever. It is going to happen. And has happened in the last hour of flights.
I’m not a nice person when I’m sick. They won’t like me at all.
The war on terror so far:
See the terrorist act.
See the Republicans react to the terrorist attack on cue.
See the Democrats react to the Republicans reacting to the terrorist attack on cue.
See the Defense budget doubled. See the terror alerts. See the Patriot Act. See the Constitution shredded.
Years later….
See the terrorist attack.
See the Democrats react to the terrorist attack on cue.
See the Republicans react to the Democrats reacting to the terrorist attack on cue.
See the Defense department budget doubled. See the terror alerts. See the Patriot Act II. See the Constitution shredded.
Repeat as necessary to sustain the National Security Police State.
And now all the Iraqi oil contracts are going to Russia and China. That worked out real good too.
If I had to bear James Carville’s offspring, I’d be whackadoo too.
I think it’s CLEAR that BHO is entirely responsible for providing his Nigerian nephew with explosive stuff, along with instruction on how to explode it upon landing in Detriot. Everyone saw Airforce One sneakily flying away from Schipol Airport on Xmas day, and that was Tiger Woods playing golf in Hawaii. Y’all knew something like this was a slam-dunk when BHO got ‘lected, didn’t ya? Told ya so!
/snark off
What a bunch of crap. What’s most annoying is the lack of real push-back from the spineless, wimpy Dems, but not surprising, either. Bring on the money for Blackwater/Xe, boys!!!! Yeee-haw!
I THOUGHT MCCAIN CAUGHT OSAMA WITH HIS SECRET PLAN?????????????????????????
Considering your statement on allying with the right, we are going to have to find the common ground and then talk them down from their reactionary response (racism), or marginalize them.
(I think you have conflated disregard for forms of life on the part of Cheney/KBR life with xenophobic racism. )
From the DHS/FBI Report titled “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political
Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” P.5
The disastrous results of NAFTA are apparent, on that we citizens can agree.
It’s the right-wingers response to coerced immigration it that is misguided. They are targeting the victims as the cause, rather that the source.
Shawna Forde obviously is a disgusting example of a KKK type hater. We are going to have to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. They aren’t all like this, some can be enlightened.
Cheney/KBR, the NeoCons and the NeoLIberals are actually alike in that their polices ignore the blow back and and long term consequences and they they all have the same result: Degradation of quality of life, civil rights, and encroachment of liberties.
They don’t discriminate. Human suffering is inconsequential, whether it’s North American, South American, Mexican, Palestinian, Asian, Arab, Muslim.. All except for Israeli.
KBR’s persistent problem with shoddy electrical work killed troops in the shower and bad drinking water gave them dysentery and water is pretty important in the desert. This is reckless disregard for the lives of the troops.
Republicans are privatizing public utilities, the military and giving contracts to friends, and enriching themselves.
Democrats are privatizing social services like health care, schools and enshrining TBTF predatory monopolies, and funneling money to banks.
We forget that our Governments failure to protect us came long before Bill Clinton like with Pearl Harbor.
All the fancy Agencies and Departments, and Intelligence and Military have never done a good job. They had been warned before the Cole went into dock.
They had even been warnings before the Embassy bombings in Africa. There were treats in Saudi Arabia and with several other attacks, all of which parts of our Government dismissed.
Face it we have one of the most bungling Governments in the world, and we seem unable to control it, and yet are at it’s mercy.
