Well Pups, by the time we are together again, another Christmas will be behind us and we will either be recovering, getting ready to hit those after-Christmas sales or some of us will be back to the grind.
Let’s have an open forum today. Tell me, how was your Christmas? How did you spend it? And what was the best thing about it, and your least favorite thing about it?
Also, there are five days left in 2009, how do you plan to spend them?

About Firedoglake
Good Morning….I can’t wait to get out of the house today…Maybe a movie. At least I didn’t overeat;) How are you?
I spent mine with the pups. The worst thing was the wet melting snow (you are lucky you are not here for that) — the best thing was snuggling and eating cheese snacks together.
How is your mom? We miss you.
Good morning! My christmas ended up being nice, now all that prep and its already over. I’m planning to catch some sales today, but for the rest of 2009 I am going to try my best to stay focused and remember what is really important and leave all unnecessary things behind and not bring them into yet another decade.
Well I can’t say that I didn’t overeat…but in moderation. :) I’m going out for a little while, but I won’t be out long…kind of in chill mode.
My mom is okay…not looking forward to coming back to the melting snow, but I’ll be back tomorrow evening. We will be dealing with that for a while, probably.
That is also my thought, which then gets unfocused…but the clutter, the unimportant, and focus on what is important, etc. Shall we have a support group?
Good Morning DeVeria and all.
Spent the day at my sister’s house with her and her family
It was a good day. My brother is in town from the Baltimore area(Columbia) and will be staying here for a few days. It is going to be warmer here today making it almost up to freezing.
My kids spent the holidays at home, my daughter and her family in Norman OK were digging out from a rare snow storm as was my son in Minot ND.
I need one right about now…boy, 2009 is ending with a bang!
G’morning. I heard about that snow storm. Old man winter is really hitting hard right now.
Good morning DeVeria, brave you are to venture out there today ;)
Hope everyone had a good Christmas, or saw a good movie lol
G’morning. Yes, I want to go shopping today…for one thing, I didn’t bring any church clothes and I want to go to church tomorrow, so any old excuse will do…
My holyday was the 21st…the Solstice.
I spent it alone, meditating on the past year. My favorite part of it? I’m still sober after another year.
My least favorite part of the whole schamgagy? The coal I found in my stocking called “healthcare reform”…and I wasn’t even a naughty girl!
The part I like best is that Xmas is OVAH! Cheers!
That my dear is alot to celebrate..Congratulations.
Wonderful…congratulations! I’m glad it’s over too…on to the next thing.
My Christmas was okay. Sometimes you just have to focus on the ways you are blessed, and like most people in the western world, for me that’s a lot of ways. I had plenty to eat and drink and people to love. That’s a lot.
Kassandra, well done on staying sober. I’m reminded there are things in my own life that I’m better off not doing so hat off to you that you’ve achieved that.
Also, I wanted to say, RevBev, your presence has been inspiring this year and I hope to see a lot more of you in ’10.
Hi DeVeria and Jane
Happy Day After. The funniest part of yesterday was watching our big hound dog completely destroy the empty boxes. He had the living room floor completely covered with little bits of cardboard. He even tired himself out.
Okay, the sad part. It appears that I have the flu. Oh, well. I’ll just have to catch up on my FDL reading. Was just looking at the 400plus one from yesterday, and the related Seminals.
Thank you Jane. Big hugs to all of you people (ha).
Many thanks…that’s very kind. We’ll look forward to the New Year;)
And Deveria! Yes, a year of sobriety IS alot to celebrate. I’m happy one day day at a time after over 9 of ‘em.
I’ve watched a few of those I love on this path fall off of it or get into big trouble…and THAT’S sobering.
On to the next thing, indeed!
Good morning…you are correct, that is where are focus needs to be…on our blessings.
Demi, Take care….Do you have fever? Just hoping it wouldn’t be the flu!! But I know you are around alot of people. I am not “new again”, but I am feeling better. Got the good advice about liquids and obeyed. Feel better…and find something to make that happen.
I gotta ditto what Dr. Zen said. You’re a peach.
And, I think this IS our support group.
chicken soup!
Yep…and thanks. Did you ever start with Ginger Beer? It does clear the head and is very soothing. I finally got the nearest “package” store to stock it….I guess that’s a ’09 success;)
No fever. Not yet anyway. I’ve been burning the candle at both ends and it could be that the universe just had to get out the 2 X 4. I don’t remember the last time I did nothing but sit here at the Lake and “listen” to the tee bee. I think today’s the day. Oh, yes, and count my many blessings. Count them one by one.
Now you should have taken pictures of that! I hope you feel better. I haven’t had that flu yet…an occasional stuffy nose or sore throat, but I always seem to catch it in time. That’s unusual for me…I catch everything. Feel better!
I made some from scratch the other day, when the mister had the same symptons I’m enjoying, but it got left on the stove with the heat on. Guess what? I even threw out the pan. Seriously.
O dear…I’ve been doing that more lately with boiling water myself…I don’t cop to dementia yet; I think it means doing toooo many things…Slow down, girl (she said to herself as well)
Thanks. You’re right. We should have taken pictures. I haven’t had a messy Christmas Morning living room like that since the kids were little. I crawled around the flooring picking little pieces up for a long time. He sure did enjoy it, though. And, he especially enjoyed being the center of our attention.
Good Morning DeVeria and Firedogs,
we had a fabulous holiday – the non rushing around, very warm and content, count your blessings (I count the fellowship of this community among them) kind of Christmas. Peace of Mind, the best gift evah
oh, and look out Caturday !, Santa brought me a camera
crosses fingers, prays to link deities
I’m sure…Rashad is still too young to know exactly what was going on. But his mom said he did enjoy the stuff he got that made noise! Next year will be good for him.
oh (((Ms Demi))) how about Tamilflu ? despite the controversy, it does work in knocking back the severity of symptoms if you catch it in time
G’morning. I love it when I’m not rushing…lol. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen too often. And Peace of mind is a very wonderful thing…best of all.
Lordy, that is one avenging angel – and wielding a candy cane!
Oh, thanks. It’s not so severe that lots of rest, lots of liquids, and lots of doing nothing won’t be enough.
I slept for 9 hours straight last night, which probably hasn’t happened since I was an infant.
I count you among my many blessings.
Toy toys! Whoopee.
Did anyone here get my 2 X 4 reference?
right back atcha ! feel better doll.
can you see the actual link I posted above ? that’s Elvis, King of the Ornaments. I made him 17 years ago when there wasn’t $$ for a tree topper – when I asked the kids what they wanted me to make, they agreed on a T Rex Angel. a .69 cent piece of plastic is now a treasure :D
Yep…you had to get knocked down. Next time slow up a bit…moderation…that’s one of my key words for 2010. I’m going to master it!
hell, I got your “all of you people’ reference – lol
Well, yes. And, from Cenk Uygur: In steps Jane Hamsher, with a two-by-four. And she just clocked Rahm Emanuel across the head.
I just rummaged in the bottom of my freezer and came up with a single frozen chickie breast. I’m saved! Putting soup on now.
NPR story on homelsss children…among other things, not allowed in hi-school
our best ornaments were the homemade ones, they’re the ones with real meaning.
Cooked dinner for my son, his girlfriend, my 5 month old grandson, and my ex-wife. I gave my son a photo of me feeding him when he was 1 framed together with a photo of him feeding his son at age 4 months. He was really touched–even sniffled a little–at age 18, yet!
we’re thinking about seeing a film – suggestions ?
we’re not big Sci Fi or Fantasy people, so we’re in no big hurry to see Avatar Sherlock Holmes on the other hand . . .anyone seen it ? and has Lovely Bones been released ? haven’t checked yet.
Lovely…thanks
Im in that quandary too. It’s Complicated, Nine, Invictus, Up in the Air…all interesting, I think. What do you think?
one of my most prized possessions is a little contruction paper christmas tree our oldest made in 2nd grade – it sits right at the top :D
Morning everyone. Well I overspent and overate. Am I a great American, or what?
I remember I used to carefully wrap the fancy glass ones up to preserve them. Now, I’m even more careful with the old home made ones from when the kids were little. It’s funny how things change, isn’t it?
That sounds wonderful. Blessings? You bet. And, teaching your son well.
Too funny
oooh forgot about those. now I’m thinking Nine would be highly entertaining and escapist fare.
No suggestions for going to the movies. But last night the family gathered and we watched ‘The Hangover’. Very funny.
Hi you all. I spent my Christmas with the cats in front of the fireplace. This drafty old house just ain’t made for cold winter blasts. I chose this year to stay home though, the blessings of my life, my friends offered to share. I even made turkey breast and dressing for myself. Nice to know I still know how!
My most interesting gift was a book about Trotsky and the American Communist Party; from one of my right wing friends.(g).
My Christmas web and e- mail message seems to have fallen flat. I guess cadavers and Eugene Debs juat don’t strike many as Christmassy.. Just goes to show.
Teddy’s Dkos thread featuring Cenk’s video is still going strong. What a circus!
Awww…how nice.
oh piney, what a great gift. welcome
You can smell the sawdust from here.
amen. having sat through similar with our slacker age kids, I really wasn’t expecting much – but we laughed our asses off, several moments of literally rolling on the floor, not being able to catch our breath funny
Our family and our friend all decided to give something to each other – a donation to local food banks. Our Co-Op was giving a 2 to 1 (for every $20 they gave $40). They even had middle school kids crayon the brown bags!
The other best part is I got books to read that I was hoping for – John Muir, Renegade, etc.
The worst part, at a little bit too much deep rich chocolate.
I didn’t now about your sobriety. You rock, girl!!
I’d like to see Sherlock Holmes,
have heard rave reviews of the special effects of Avatar, some say talk of cult following with a green “mythology’
and I swear I all ready saw an adaptation of the Lovely Bones – good story if it’s the same, the way the story is told is the same. Intriguing.
Up in the Air. I have the same passel o’picks dilemma. Glad you’re feeling better!
you gave him a real treasure!
Thank you….I have been a total slug…Angela is glad Im moving…she has clean litter;) Did you have a good holiday?
I, unfortunately, ditto those germs. Three of us at casa klynn in various stages of germiness.
Drink lots of water and tea demi!
I trust you shared some of that tasty turkey with your kittehs, sounds like a very comfy one, snug in front of the fire with your furred loved ones.
loved the book – surely a tough adaption for film. didn’t even want to read it, really, who wants to read of a murdered child, but man oh man does she make it worthwhile
Nice. The quiet year in alternate years with full family. So mostly my daughter’s little tribe, brother G and I. Thanks for asking!
was looking for you yesterday on the threads – how you doing ?
Sorry to hear that. I’ll let you know when the chickie soup is ready. Take care.
Sounds good…how is your weather? I saw some coverage, I think, lamenting fewer plows…
alrighty then, it’s a world gone mad – for the first time in 20 years, oldnslow just told me he wants to go shopping. so gotta put the White Chicken Chili stuff in the crockpot and head out
bbl. thanks DeVeria
mad progressive love to all
I am new at this game. Christmas was good. We have grandchildern (twins) who has helped bring Christmas back alive. You guys will like this I made my son-in-law help me work on the chicken house. The birds were getting in and eating the feed. It was quite cold but good work.
This comming week we are going to Arizona and we are not going to read a newspaper, watch a news show or listen to any political news. It will be nice to shut out the world for a few days.
So, how fantastic is that? Merry, merry….
Hey, I hear you…so did I. But I’m really going to overspend today…
that’s a nice gift…
Give him a peck for me and you two go have some fun. See you later.
ahh blessed relief.
glad you had a renewed Christmas, amazing how kids breathe the magic back into it.
Now that sounds like a plan. How old are the twins?
Loved the man. Wish he were here. Doin’ better, though, I think. And such family fun! Thanks for asking. And how are you, wise woman?
Rev Bev, I was kind of pumped to see Alec and Meryl, but I read a disappointing review and of Nine too. Avatar does not interest me too much, so I guess that would leave Sherlock and Invictus (?). But I have other stuff I have to do, so maybe I’ll just skip the movies this time.
We have been building community in my neighborhood for a while, but this year was really great. Lots of neighbors are participating in our various activities from fire survivor relief (a historic apt. building burned, everyone there lost everything, including some kitties) to setting up 1400 luminarias (we are on the luminaria tour route).
We really dodged the blizzard plop in the Twin Cities. All around us, though. Temp in high 30s yesterday, so what should have been snow was rain. Ergo, slush, slop, and very messy driving.
Good plan for AZ trip!! Take off your watch, too. It’s magical! Oh, and welcome to the lake.
Hey Barbara…I would take that over the snow anyday. I will be so glad when ours is all gone!
I’m with you DeVeria, and ours is disappearing fast in this rain.
You might not be surprised to read this. I never wear a watch.
Watching a Sherlock Holms marathon on TCM right now. And, stirring the soup.
I worked yesterday ,I work in a residential program for teenaged boys. We had 5 kids who couldn’t go home (no home to go to) . We had a good time though ,the boss bought lobsters for dinner . The guys loved it , some of them had never had lobster so it was a big deal for them.
I can’t think of a better way to have spent the holidays
good on you for the alcohol free year !
I hope you have many many more !
What a wonderful way to spend the holidays.
Thanks. In this drafty house it’s a matter of mutual need to share body warmth. Would you believe these cats raised on formula food turn up their noses at human fare.
Maybe you can explain who and what are “pups”?
Those that frequent the Lake are sometimes referred to as pups .
Though I believe Jane was referring to her own actual dogs
We have met the Firedogs, and they are us.
PS, welcome, larryv!
Exactly! Welcome Larryv
I gained 10 lbs. via the huge food buffet we had. Went down to the Meridian park and gave a few plates to some homeless guys. Today just cleaning and trying to come up with a new New Years resolution. I quit smoking last year, YAY! so I need a new one. I’m thinking I want my six pack tummy back before spring, so I may decide that will be my resolution.
