anticipated second wave of the storm fizzled, so things should melt off tomorrow if we have temps in the high thirties. DC area not so lucky, hope tejan got where she needed to be.
Yeah, the cough still hits me at times…but I think I’m getting a little better. OTOH, J is sick again. She’s already in bed and I will be before too long.
I may have found a band…it’ll be a startup but a guy I know found a gal with some freakin PIPES! We’ll see what happens but for the moment, I’m slightly optimistic.
Let’s say I remember a bunch of Christmases in trailer parks. :)
My family is from Wyoming, and a bit hardscrabble. I was missing my gramp Ernie about 2 years ago and threw some old family photos from back in Upton, Jackson and Riverton WY in this video
tomorrow i’m planning on making spritz (little green xmas tree shape), popcorn balls with our “secret recipe” from an old neighbor out in the country, and peanut brittle. I dunno why people complain about fruitcakes. Have they ever tried store-bought peanut brittle? gag! *retches at the thought* Nasty stuff. Peanut brittle is only good if it’s home-made.
No chocolate, i’m not a chocolate fan. Coconut only in the apricot balls which mom is making. Nuts? if they’re not walnuts, which give me canker sores.
The main thing with xmas cookies is BUTTER. And more BUTTER! Held together with a little sugar and flour. Vary the flavorings.
only took 9 hours of looking to find them. and i had looked in the stove earlier and didnt see them or hear any clanks when i was poking in the hot ashes.
guess you haven’t read my blog about it over at my place larue (ahem)
if it was the store-bought bricks, i agree. Nasty. But i have several older friends who make delish homemade fruitcakes. Dark, light, yum. Slice them extremely thin, and serve a little slice with hot strong coffee to cut the sweetness.
I know there must be delicious fruitcakes. Christine has said she makes one. I’ll believe it when I taste it…if I can put it in my mouth without gagging.
Nope, Suz nails my thought, it WAS Spanky McFarlane, later of Spanky And Our Gang, and at one point, a member of Mama’s N The Papa’s as they toured post Cass Elliott.
Damn I sure love Spanky . . . she was not only a hottie, but could sing her soul forever.
Wow. Thanks Suz, for the nail on that hammer. Spanky was grand.
Baby Brother (who is middle-aged but he’s still a little brat *g*) had me play this over ‘n over last christmas at the family get-together. Fell off his chair laughing each time. Porky Pig – Blue Christmas
I’m OK here in NE KS, weather not too bad, some cold days but some not so cold. I have been a bit preoccupied with trying to help take care of my 85 year old mother from 600 miles away.
Speaking of KS, last night I went to see “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” great documentary based on Thomas Frank book of the same name. Well worth seeing though it did make me wonder a bit (again) what I am doing here…
Got out long enough to shovel the steps and the walk, and to make a snow angel. Prepared stuff for a fire in the fireplace in case the power went out [cut off from the Lake.....nooooo.....] but so far knock on wood the power is holding steady.
I’m used to this snow stuff from my years in Boston, but this much in December is unusual for DC. It’s going to be something like the 5th biggest storm here ever. I was in MA for the blizzard of ’78, where they closed the interstate and people skied on it to get to work. Can I go back to the bay area now please?
my daughters drive me bonkers during cookie baking sessions by saying that to each other and cracking each other up. “…just like buttah!” cue up 20-something sisters cracking their shit up, as wangdang would say.
crab boats on the other side of the spit are lighting up the fog. i think i’m gonna pick up some crab when i go into town monday to run the errands i didn’t run friday
We have 3 or 4 inches of snow, it’s beautiful, but my neighbor’s very tall pine tree is leaning toward my house. The branches are all snow-laden and drooping. I’ve had one pine tree fall on our house, that’s enough.
He had this trick where he could get this one horse we had, Pat (go figure) while he was riding him, go up to the corral, and nose up the gate, so he wouldn’t have to get off the damn horse to let the cows in.
I forget the dogs name at the time, but he was doing his work, herding the cows in, and Ernie only got off the horse to shut the gate and bar it.
You should see the carnage my honey hath wreaked past few daze here . .
Stuff with chocolate, coconut, nuts, mixes, creams, brownie mixes, about 15 different mixes of stuff with eggs, milk, mixes, chocalates, flours, and more.
I don’t even know the names for this shit.
But I’m 15 lbs fatter in two daze . . . this is NOT good . . . . *G*
I wonder who even knows of this . . . . Dino Valente before and during Quicksilver Messenger Service.

loohoo, a candy thermometer is such a big help! I hated trying to make candy B4 i got one, nothing ever turned out right. Once i got that candy thermometer, yeowza! Proper temperature is the crucial thing with candies.
and re wangdang, last i heard via betsy was that her job is consuming a lot of her time. *sad face*
I fear that he may be right this time. IMHO, it’s a tough call. Tactics, strategy, and pragmatics all come into play.
Bluntly, we are in a hostage situation. The Obama folks are saying to us: “Give another $100B per year to the insurers or 45M Americans have nothing more than emergency-room access to medical care.” And that $100B will come from excise taxes on middle-class insurance and from benefits cuts to Medicare.
The U.S. system of medical care has two major problems:
1) It costs too much: 16% of our enormous GDP vs. 10% of the GDP of other industrialized (OECD) countries.
2) It screws Americans. 15% of Americans get no access other than the emergency room, and a million per year of the rest go bankrupt covering what the insurers refuse to pay.
The Obama plan makes #1 worse by $100B per year but claims to fix #2. Krugman says “go for it.”
a single payer system would take care of both of those problems. but we the people don’t matter — gotta mandate that insurance companies get a 15 to 20% profit yanno
but we the people don’t matter — gotta mandate that insurance companies get a 15 to 20% profit yanno.
We live in a system of “corporate entitlements.”
IMHO, Obama has been cynically protecting those entitlements. Krugman is saying “They’ve got us by the bals, so lets get them next time.” But, how many “next times” do we have to give them? Let’s fucking kick over their apple cart! “But what about those poor 45M?”
how much can they take until there is nothing left to take? and they only care about those poor 45M to fuck us with. if they really cared, there would be no fight over health care reform and it sure as hell would not be insurance company entitlements misnamed reform.
Repeat reply, this is the best of them, the original band, and Eric singing it like they did in the studio.
And Eric did NOT like to sing studio stuff in most of his live performances.
Nice, nice pick.
Hullaballo!!!
*G*
It was family night and my folks had this one, and Shindig and more on the telly when we were kids.
Along with Ed Sullivan and more, there were times we all were around the TV for stuff that was music oriented or comedy orientedd.
TW3
Smothers Brothers
Rowan N Martin
A few I can’t recall . . .
Good times!
We watched The Beatles and The Stones on Ed Sullivan, I recall. And many more, Peter N Gordon, Chad N Jeremy, Jerry N The Pacemakers, and of course Peter Paul and Mary and many US groups.
It was in the days when he led into songs with stories that would last up to 10 minutes. Those were the best shows. People just spellbound listening and then he’d break out. My best buddy and I would just look at each other cuz there was nothing to say. We weren’t the only ones, because in those days he’d end the song, there’d be about 2seconds opf silence, and then the crowd would explode.
It was like you had to catch your breath cuz you’d been holding it for 15 minutes.
how much can they take until there is nothing left to take? and they only care about those poor 45M to fuck us with. if they really cared, [...]
I’m with you, Suzanne. And Rahm Emanuel is essentially daring us to shoot this one down. And they claim to realize that liberals shot down significant health-care reform in the 70s and 90s, so they’re convinced that we should have learned our lesson by now; per Krugman:
Not to put too fine a point on it, America would be in much better shape today if Democrats had cut a deal on health care with Richard Nixon, or if Bill Clinton had cut a deal with moderate Republicans back when they still existed.
But, IMHO, unless we put those rapacious asshole in their place, those 45M will never get the health-care that they deserve,
yup. the fucker needs to have his bluff called. a bully will never stop bullying until he is forced to — either by public shame or the victims standing up to him.
Wigwam…last spring I referred to California’s having to lead with their healthcare for all program…looks like that may happen when the terminator departs.
Dude, dudette . . . it’s not about Rahm, or Obama, it’s a class struggle and it’s about corporate control and the paid for fucks of our Congress, in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle.
We have hashed this over and over again here at FDL in the daytime, there’s no need to bring it to LLN.
But if ya want I’ll go on forever with ya till we ruin the thread.
Is that what ya want?
And Suz, sorry if I’m gettin cranky . . . . but I am . . . . harumph.
yeah but we need to activate the storm in the streets or it will just pass over us. I’m shocked nothing has happened yet with tons of people losing their homes, jobs, money and pensions. The unions will organize it, but time’s a wastin.
absolutely has to happen in 2010. People are pissed off and on life support. The elite have overdone it. It will be interesting to see how far law enforcement officials go with their new ear-shattering toys and tazers. Revolution is in the air.
I have a small but MAJOR antidote to those feelings of betrayal, pain and shifting paradigms, shifting away from humanity.
Playing For Change/Peace Through Music. We bought a bunch of their DVD/CD’s for $10 presents to send to the people in our lives that need a little breather , a moment of peace and joy in music.
It’s our therapy right now.
Very cool !!

Peace Through Music.
My man and I went for a real date down in Seattle to see the Playing For Change band. We got a modest but wonderful hotel [6th ave.Inn] walked in the rain 4 blocks to the concert. Frigging amazing!! Eagerly went into Tom Douglas’s late night restaurant The Palace Kitchen for appetizers and wine. We had the most amazing time. The band had been in there the night before and the staff was so happy we were elated by their music. I got a tour of the kitchen and my husband got to talk wine with professionals who care. We had deep respect for our incredible waitress, the type of person who makes you feel at home, instantly. And the Coconut Cream pie is to die for. Signature dessert.
Never would have happened without the incredible Playing For Change.
Peace
Dear Lurking Mod,
Ar the Spotlight Project screens legit? I have to either shut them down or “go back”.? It’s kind of aggressive and I never figure out what I do in returning to FDL that causes it.
Suz…!

So cool, Kelly! Good for you for making a video of those precious memories.
BUTTER RULZ!
I actually get nervous if there’s not a backup pound of butter in the freezer. Seriously.
You. Need. Butter. Period.
Yummy! All except the fruitcake. I guess I had bad, really bad, experiences as a kid.
AMEN! I’m the same way. Gotta have the back-up butter in the freezer.
i’ve only had that horrible store bought with those fake green and red ‘fruit’ thangs.
Thanks. I still miss that old rascal. He was quite the horse whisperer, hell, animal whisperer.
I saw that old man hold a frikking badger in his lap and pet it, without becoming damaged. Really! He was quite something.
if it was the store-bought bricks, i agree. Nasty. But i have several older friends who make delish homemade fruitcakes. Dark, light, yum. Slice them extremely thin, and serve a little slice with hot strong coffee to cut the sweetness.
Okay, I make a motion that we get over “the perfect being the enemy of the good” once and for all.
At the end of the day…

Tongue free smooches to ya, hoss . . .*G*

Sad, I know. Sorry.
hahahahahaha dammit larue there wasn’t a forking spew warning
Nope, Suz nails my thought, it WAS Spanky McFarlane, later of Spanky And Our Gang, and at one point, a member of Mama’s N The Papa’s as they toured post Cass Elliott.
Damn I sure love Spanky . . . she was not only a hottie, but could sing her soul forever.

She was great! The band was lagging, and she got them going!
That was sweet emerson.
But I made the mistake of looking at the related videos; one of them being W conducting the Marine Corps Band! Yikes!
Baby Brother (who is middle-aged but he’s still a little brat *g*) had me play this over ‘n over last christmas at the family get-together. Fell off his chair laughing each time. Porky Pig – Blue Christmas

Buttaha . . . just like buttah! *G*
I can appreciate that!
*G*
Just enough sugar to hold the butter together in the oven.
For the candy, OTOH, you want SUGAR. And more SUGAR. with just enough butter to help melt it and turn it into something.

DC, etc sounds like a mess.
Did you see the odd story about the DC snowball fight run amok? Detective (allegedly) brandished a gun at young people who snowballed his hummer.
Dang! That is too funny. The wife/sister/whomever in the background just makes you crack UP! Saved that link.
Damn, outside of Jimi . . . wicked gal!

Dang EG, I had no idea it was so much!
oh no. is the neighbor one ya can point it out to without causing problems?
My grandma has a wonderful-but-easy toffee recipe. It involves Hershey bars. I still need to get a candy thermometer…
i saw pictures and the video of the snowball fight earlier at americablog

My Fave Dino
Sounds like lots of adventures! I grew up in Minnesota, small towns, really fun fishing the rivers in summer and ice fishing in winter.
Beautiful at Christmastime with the lights reflecting on the snow and the ice angels. (Both the kind like you made today and the ice angels.)
And where is Wangdang? And LS??? Miss those two.
Hey pups, you know, not all country music sucks!

How about this?
winner winner — dang haven’t seen that video in years….
There’s a great one with the best Christmas movie clips. The key word is classic. I saved that one for you. *g*
Ready and waiting. I’ve found few love the Christmas season as much as I do. Very emotional for me.
Can Vinnie and Brent (Mason) play the shit out of those guitars or what?
For my money, Vinnie is the best guitar player on earth.
My hero, Krugman, favors capitulation: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/18/opinion/18krugman.html?_r=2&scp=3&sq=krugman&st=cse
He stood so tall. What am I to do?
i love the sights and smells of christmas. tis a magical time of year when almost anything is possible.

Likewise, tbsa.
his name rings a bell but not his voice…. like his stuff so far
Good stuff, hoss, good stuff . . *G*
(talk to me about Tony Rice and Doc Watson sometime)
*G*
loohoo, a candy thermometer is such a big help! I hated trying to make candy B4 i got one, nothing ever turned out right. Once i got that candy thermometer, yeowza! Proper temperature is the crucial thing with candies.
and re wangdang, last i heard via betsy was that her job is consuming a lot of her time. *sad face*
His original solo album is heart breaking . . .
It’s long, long ago, however, and the songs I’d hit are not on youtube.
It was really meloncholy . . . . he was great. N then, he was gone, after his time off and on with QMS.
Died early. Left some great music, though . . .
like so many of that era… jimi, jim, janis…
definitely a unique stylist. Sometimes reminded me of Airplane, and other times of Eric Burden among others
A troubador, of the gypsy sort, and a member of QMS in his time . . .
He had a way and a voice, on his solo work that would melt hearts, aside of his work with QMS, and the rock side.
He was a gypsy, he died too soon, and like QMS, it was over fast by the late 70′s.
Yep.
I fear that he may be right this time. IMHO, it’s a tough call. Tactics, strategy, and pragmatics all come into play.

Hey man, the guy you need to get to know about is DALE Watson.
According to the sometimes perfect oracle YouTube, Beverly Bivens was the voice of We Five and You Were On My Mind, not Spanky McFarlane & Our Gang.
Damn, here’s the Dino Version of Me and My Uncle, with Dino on his 12 string solo album.
Wow.
Right off his solo album, as I have it. ’68 or so,
MUCH different from Greatful Dead or Old And In The Way.
You hear his gypsy voice, git and all of it.
Man I love this version of this song . . . you pickers out there, this is one to replicate.
Well, hope she’s happy!!
a single payer system would take care of both of those problems. but we the people don’t matter — gotta mandate that insurance companies get a 15 to 20% profit yanno
sigh
hey mr why — haven’t seen ya in a while — how ya doing dood?
thanks for the correction — like i said grain or two of salt… :)
Yeah, good call Emerson . . . those were the times and there’s some hidden gems most have not heard from it all.
Sigh . . . I feel old at times . . . but energized, by the music, still . . ;-)
Eric Burdon was my favorite. Over the Stones and even the Beatles as a kid.
I know Dale, he’s not Doc’s kin, but he’s all right with me . . *G*
THANK YOU!! My bad, totally! Beverly Bivens!!!!
Damned memory and I appreciate you pointing this out.
She was a hottie!!!!!
Still.
Sigh.
*G*
one of my teen anthems
Always like Eric.
Saw him at SF Civic Center, in the early 70′s, with a reunion of him, Alan Price, Chas Chandler, and more.
One of the best show I’d seen . . . . they were great!
“In this little part of the city
Where the sun reFUSE to shine.
People tell me there’s just no USE in trying.”
*G*
We live in a system of “corporate entitlements.”
IMHO, Obama has been cynically protecting those entitlements. Krugman is saying “They’ve got us by the bals, so lets get them next time.” But, how many “next times” do we have to give them? Let’s fucking kick over their apple cart! “But what about those poor 45M?”
Great song, great version, nice pick Suz!!!
*G*
yeah, that’s the song I was thinking of specifically, Loo Hoo. A little bit of Jagger too.
how much can they take until there is nothing left to take? and they only care about those poor 45M to fuck us with. if they really cared, there would be no fight over health care reform and it sure as hell would not be insurance company entitlements misnamed reform.
First time I saw Bruce in NYC, He did the most amazing lead-in and rendition of this song. Never forget it.
oh wow emerson… that musta been special indeed. bruce has the voice to do eric
Way early! Good catch.
People tell me that Lucinda Williams is country, so I’ll agree with that.
ya notice the wee flub headed into the first chorus?
Hard to say.
Howard Dean Speaks For Me.
lucinda is in a class all by herself. ooooh i love this song
We Gotta Get Out of This Place
Where?
Where does the time go . . . who knows . . . . Where The Time Goes?
It was in the days when he led into songs with stories that would last up to 10 minutes. Those were the best shows. People just spellbound listening and then he’d break out. My best buddy and I would just look at each other cuz there was nothing to say. We weren’t the only ones, because in those days he’d end the song, there’d be about 2seconds opf silence, and then the crowd would explode.
It was like you had to catch your breath cuz you’d been holding it for 15 minutes.
tobacoo road
Me too, Sunny. Always has.
those were teh days
le sigh
le envy
le sigh
Ahhhh Sister I’ll dip once at LLN on the poliicay.
Agreed.
We need changes, and I think what we have is gonna PUSH them changes.
It ain’t over . . . the details, I’ve left strewn daytime at FDL.
Bless ya for your inputs and way to come out for it all . . .
Your voice soars, like Judy Collins . . . *G*
We KNOW where our time has gone . . .
Lucinda: JOY
I luvs me some Lucinda!!! *G*
Yeah baby!
Let’s get political, political . . . .
Howard Dean/Elisabeth Warren for ’12!!!!
*lighting smoke* glad it was good for ya dood
Yep!!!
*G*
my voice only has the power that my readers give it. it is when we are all of one voice that the fuckers will be forced to hear us
Nah, This One
*G*
Ok. I bow to yer wow . . . you NAILED this one . .
*G*
I’m with you, Suzanne. And Rahm Emanuel is essentially daring us to shoot this one down. And they claim to realize that liberals shot down significant health-care reform in the 70s and 90s, so they’re convinced that we should have learned our lesson by now; per Krugman:
But, IMHO, unless we put those rapacious asshole in their place, those 45M will never get the health-care that they deserve,
nope… i stand by my eric pick for that song dood
Yep, I want it BACK!
yup. the fucker needs to have his bluff called. a bully will never stop bullying until he is forced to — either by public shame or the victims standing up to him.
Heh, here we are with blues english v. early folk rock . . . both taken from black blues of decades before.
Go figger . . *G*
*smooch*
Hah!! I gave that up…Smoking, I mean. *g*
If Rahm takes his boss down with him, what will high-level democrats learn?
I’d dearly love to see Rahm publicly humiliated, but would it change Obama?
smooches back atcha dood
I’m in for that. And Mr. Black for chief economic advisor.
More Signe Anderson And Marty Balin From Way Back Then
Folk rock. Love it.
*G*
maybe show him the error of his ways and give him a chance to redeem himself
time for me to head out. see ya’ll tomorrow nite — tis my week for sunday late late nite.
Wig, there’s so much heated up masses of us general public that’s gonna get unveiled soon you just gotta wait.
And THAT’S No Secret . . . . ;-)
David Bowie says turn and face the strange.
g’nite Suzanne.
Hey Larue and Suzanne and everyone,
I’ve got to crash, but it’s sure good talking to people who feel as I do!
Wigwam
Wigwam…last spring I referred to California’s having to lead with their healthcare for all program…looks like that may happen when the terminator departs.
Dude, dudette . . . it’s not about Rahm, or Obama, it’s a class struggle and it’s about corporate control and the paid for fucks of our Congress, in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle.
We have hashed this over and over again here at FDL in the daytime, there’s no need to bring it to LLN.
But if ya want I’ll go on forever with ya till we ruin the thread.
Is that what ya want?
And Suz, sorry if I’m gettin cranky . . . . but I am . . . . harumph.
Angst As It Should Be
Nice music posit . . .*G*
Hiya Suz!
Oops
nite suz
yeah but we need to activate the storm in the streets or it will just pass over us. I’m shocked nothing has happened yet with tons of people losing their homes, jobs, money and pensions. The unions will organize it, but time’s a wastin.
You must be leading up to this, I’ll give you the push. We’re Volunteers of America.
And now, I should go away and wish all remainingg Pups the best of what they want.
Cuz we’ve all worked hard for it . . .
Peach, and may folk rock and oldies songs bring you lower blood pressure.
Woiks for me. Yeah, it’s all Comin Back To Me.
*G*
Ok, for you I waken . . . my guess and posit and prediliction is, hoss, it’s coming soon.
The patience is wearing thin across the political, social, economic spectrum.
I don’t see any of this governence continuing unabated without real massive civil disobedience.
I just don’t. You?
good idea
Oh lord, yer one of me . . . *G*
Gimme some House At Pooneil Corners, too . . . *G*
Howdy, brother . . . *G*
I’m not convinced Rahm isn’t Obama’s handler.
Bless ya . . . I’m just sayin . . . walls crack, dam’s burst . . . when there’s just too much pressure applied to any system.
There’s just too much pressure on the present system.
The 1% have really fucked up on their calculus . . . . they are bringing it to a head, whether they want or not.
It’s coming to a head. Bubbles will burst. The masses are too ignored.
It’s bad political calculus. Stupid, frankly.
Sigh.
I should go now . . . . like the Moody Blues . . . ;-)
You and Me and Pooneil
I guess I’m going to have to be responsible for cartoons. Let me see…
Doesn’t fuckin matter, system that rules all of this is bigger n Rahm, or who ya wanna blame.
Go to sleep . . . . ;-)
You are a late nighter ain’t cha!
Welcome, welcome to the night train.
But I gotta go thud . . . I love that albuml, I love that band.
*G*
Alright, here’s Fred Thompson.
absolutely has to happen in 2010. People are pissed off and on life support. The elite have overdone it. It will be interesting to see how far law enforcement officials go with their new ear-shattering toys and tazers. Revolution is in the air.
Good night Larue.
OMG! I found the same thing to be true.
Hey, what’s the deal with the Spotlight Project screens that come up sometimes, progressive bloggers focusing on mass media BS.?.
Is this real?
Excellent toon. Fred is such a tool. Wondering why he isn’t prez right now.
Okaay.. That ‘toon is so loud it scared my cat *g*
HA HA! I don’t know why in the world it was so loud?! Scared me too.

Peace
Always wondered if I could get real volume out of this sucker – now I know.
Cute.
*poof*
Dear Lurking Mod,
Ar the Spotlight Project screens legit? I have to either shut them down or “go back”.? It’s kind of aggressive and I never figure out what I do in returning to FDL that causes it.
Hey openhope – yes the Spotlight Project is legit.
