So, the Obama administration got a wake-up call suddenly concerned about the health care reform drubbing it was taking in the progressive blogiverse, and held a conference call to try to stop the bleeding:
White House senior advisor David Axelrod and health care adviser Nancy-Ann DeParle held a conference call Thursday night with progressive bloggers — in what Axelrod described as a bid to clear the air after several tense days.
… In response to one blogger who chided the White House for failing to fight for the public option while taking “potshots” at the liberal activists, DeParle said: “The president is fighting for this. … You have no idea how many hours, how many hundreds of hours he has spent, how many phone calls he has made, how many meetings he has had. … We need your help and we don’t mean to be chiding you. But please appreciate how hard this is.”
… According to an account on DailyKos, DeParle said the provisions in the Senate bill need to be improved and moved closer to what the House bill includes, particularly on affordability.
Awww, I feel all warm and fuzzy now. They like us, they really like us after all! Except someone had to go and step on the (revised) message right away (via the Wall Street Journal):
Turn off MSNBC. Tune out Howard Dean and Keith Olbermann. The White House has its liberal wing in hand on health care, says White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel….
… Emanuel pointed to a New York Times column by economist Paul Krugman and another coming from National Journal writer Ronald Brownstein pressing for passage of the Senate health bill. “What you’re seeing is the progressive backlash against the progressive backlash,” he said.
Nice going, Rahm. Whatever small amount of goodwill the Axelrod-DeParle call created, you just undid it. The boss must sure be glad he has you as his political mastermind.

Step on yer dick often Rahm?
One damn conference call is a drop in the bucket compared to how angry progressives are.
The White house has consistently shafted us and told us to shut up and like it.
Got news for you folks, you are seriously pissing us off now and dissing us to our face just makes it all that worse.
Can someone please provide a link to the “unsubscribe” page of sell-out’s “Change…blah blah blah” site that people like me eagerly signed-up for in 2008? I need – as well as my bf – to unsubscribe. And I wanna leave a message for them there that they can take the thousands of dollars that we both gave Obama in 2008 and shove it up he and his butt-boy Rahm’s ass. Thanks.
Oh,and SWOPA!
fork rahm — whatta maroose.
Rahm likes to engage in emotional abuse.
DeParle said the provisions in the Senate bill need to be improved and moved closer to what the House bill includes, particularly on affordability.
Yeah, right.
“The president is fighting for this. … You have no idea how many hours, how many hundreds of hours he has spent, how many phone calls he has made, how many meetings he has had. …
Hello. He’s the President. If the foregoing statement is true, then DeParle is making it very clear just who is in charge here – and it ain’t the President.
Hey David & Nancy-Ann: You might wanna rethink statements like that…
Great Title!
Bill ? What Bill ? Harry and Barack are afraid to show anyone what is in the Bill. Markos tore Tweety a new one on the Ed Show that can be seen @DailyKos.com. After Tweetys stupid remarks about Bloggers yesterday it may be a while before he want to invite Jane, Emptywheel or any other blogger on to his show.
Awww, leave Rahm alooooone! He’s just doing what his boss wants him to do.
Is there any doubt whatsoever that, if this PoS ever gets to conference, how slimy Rahm will be weighing in?
“The president is fighting for this. … You have no idea how many hours, how many hundreds of hours he has spent, how many phone calls he has made, how many meetings he has had. …”
Right, that’s how they get away with spinning the truth. Because they’re counting on it that no one will ask the obvious questions: Good and well, and most assuredly true, but who has he been calling? Who with has he been meeting? etc…..
Here is the enormous amount of money corporate America—Wall Street—has contributed to Obama’s job security:
Corporate Law Firms $45,518,596
Misc Business $16,668,854
Securities & Investment $15,983,457
Health Professionals $12,093,433
Business Services $12,008,416
Real Estate $11,036,591
Oh, yeah, he’ll fights like hell for Main Street, won’t he?
Can someone please provide a link to the “unsubscribe” page of sell-out’s “Change…blah blah blah” site
We had an UNSUBSCRIBE ME! action over at Eschaton earlier today. The address of the Unsubscribe page is at the link.
We’re thinking of having another one when Obama signs this POS health bill, and expanding the focus to include the DNC, DSCC, DCCC, etc.
Dr Krugman has been begging the Obama administration for attention all year, maybe if he sides with them on this terrible bill they will let him in the group. What the administration is doing is calling in their chips from respected liberal voices in hopes they will convice us that forcing us to buy insurance is the same as extending coverage. How anyone can think that forcing people to buy insurance from the same private insurers that are bankrupting us is a good idea is beyond me. The progressives need some soldiers bcz a lot of the so call leaders of our movement are too beholden to the democrat party.
This is Bull-Dinky. This is all about Obama’s ego and nothing else. Working hard behind the scenes?? Like FDR?? Like LBJ ??
He’s been a mostly-mute side-walk superintendent on the whole process. He’s treated Congress like they were two competing college classes and tasked them with the Term Paper Health Care Reform.
Obama is clueless about real leadership in the political ring.
There are only 2 rational explanations for Obama’s reticence to “get his hands dirty”
1) he is a spineless leader as indicated above
2) he is a corporate shill and this is what he wanted all along.
Got any other choices ??
Good action – quick feedback for Rahm and Axelrod !
I’ll take door # 2.
PRESIDENT OBAMA: I HAVE A SOLUTION FOR OUR UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM!!! MANDATE THAT EVERYONE GETS A JOB!!!!!
*MODNOTE: typing in all caps is considered shouting — and is harder to read. please do not type in all caps*
Speaking as a progressive who has been highly sceptical on FDL since last winter of Obama, I have two words for him and his crew: ‘f**k you’. Apologies for the harsh language to anyone offended; I’m usually a little more tactful. And to Jane: keep up the good work please. We need some payback to all these closet repugs as we’ve witnessed on the more liberal of the MSNBC shows. Kick ‘em where it hurts, right in the electoral gonads!
It was a tag team. Markos got on Tweety and Ed got on Obama. Nice 4 minute nastygram.
RAHM: The Left should just STFU and stop acting like the election was some kind of mandate.
We came to take our country back. Next time we’ll take back the rest of it.
DEAN 2012
“The change we SHOULD have gotten!”
Too late for me, but… it would be great to go viral with it, all on the same day… all the lefty blogs and facebook too. Maybe Christmas eve?
” I can’t help it. It’s my nature. Whatever else did you expect? “
— Scorpion, to dying frog, midstream
Abuse is abuse. And you Sir, are a serial abuser of the progressives.
We are going to trust this administration because of one single conference call?
Show us. We’ve learned from the people in Missouri.
DeParle said the provisions in the Senate bill need to be improved and moved closer to what the House bill includes, particularly on affordability.
… and I won’t cum in yer mouf.
A dollar late and a day short?
i’ll call you in the morning
Tweety never has bloggers on his show.
Snort!
DEAN 2012
That’s the ticket!
Money’s on the dresser.
The Whitehouse has the liberal wing in hand on healthcare? Is that why Krugman, Sanders, Weiner, and Brown are all singing a different tune now? It pains me to see Senator Brown bow down on this one.
Dean/Sanders 2012…! An all ‘Green’ ticket…!
i wont tell a soul
DeParle said: “The president is fighting for this. … You have no idea how many hours, how many hundreds of hours he has spent, how many phone calls he has made, how many meetings he has had.
She’s right about a few things. The president is making phone calls to the insurance company and making backdoor deals with big pharma invited to his private meetings.
You know the whole drill…? Suz…? ;-)
Shouldn’t all his appointments, meetings, phone calls of a professsional (ie, POTUS) nature be covered under the FOIA?
Could we file for his schedule and call register to verify all these obviously thousands of calls and meetings?
I feel so much DESPERATE needs to exposes this fraud of a POTUS I once supported with fervor and lots pof dollars, it’s almost unhealthy.
*laughing*
Yes, but I’m thinking of a day in January – preferably, the day the healthcare “reform” bill is signed. This was pretty rushed – I had the idea Wednesday night and could only do limited promotion of it yesterday. I slapped up a webpage and put an invite on Facebook. Of course, there’s no way to tell how effective it was, but a lot of Atriots participated.
It happens to every guy sometime.
thank you!
I’m seriously considering voting Republican in 2012 and 2010 just for spite now. that’s how much I’ve come to hate Obama and Rahm.
I definitely won’t be voting Dem.
It’s absolutely amazing how I went from being full of hope after being a cynic to being just as if not more cynical than I was before in only a year.
Their actions have been to embrace and welcome Republicans, Lieberman, ultra conservative Democrats, Clintonites and Bush adminstration holdovers. Their actions have been to shun and ignore progressives. That outweighs their words by a long shot. Even really nice ones said in a conference call.
That’s why Obama is going to have a very hard time getting my vote in 2012. He’s going to show up with more words and promises, and I’m going to be asking ‘that’s nice; now what did you actually DO to advance the progressive agenda?’
Was the Lake part of this meeting?
That is a VERY good point!
Mandate that no one get sick!!!
Obama is working hard behind the scenes. Didn’t you see what happened to Dorgan’s reimportation bill? Did you see how much work it took to get rid of any vestige of a public option? I think there is a good reason why we had all the time in the world in August for teabaggers to rail about socialist medicine but now we have to pass a bill before anyone has even seen what is in the final product or its CBO score.
Already, Wall Street, their political enablers and the MSM are busy cooking up brand new variations on The Scream!!!!
How many Hundreds of thousands of hours have just the Fire Pups logged in just researching and discussing this issue since the presidential primaries?
Never mind all the people at Koz, and now some Washington Elites who read the Cliff Notes version of the issue prepared by lobbyists say we don’t understand.
Fine here is my summation of the issue tell me if I don’t understand. The insurance companies are broke and other government bailout of fat cats would be unpopular so the plan to save them is to dress up the bailout as a Healthcare bill!
The WH and Congress needs someone to do research besides paid lobbyists we work for free and our constant arguing keeps us honest.
I suggest the WH hire us:)
So using your reasoning, and considering Obama absolutely shattered every record for fundraising from individual donations, especially with smaller amounts, he IS most beholden to Main Street.
http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summary.php?id=n00009638
There were times he would raise more than what you list (where’d you get that breakdown anyway?) for “Securities and Investment” with one email blast. Seems to me your use of fundraising numbers actually proves the exact opposite conclusion of what you’ve already decided for yourself. Odd.
My wife doesn’t understand me.
Ha! Just for fun, I’ll assume you are not a Repub stoking the “divide and conquer” strategy that many Repub PR firms are freely admitting they’re employing right now, and sadly so many Liberals are playing into, and ask why you wouldn’t vote Green or some sort of Independent. You specifically say Repub to “spite” Obama. Interesting.
If on the distant chance you are for real, why don’t you just get it over with and go now? Dilly-dallying is really unbecoming, so just take a deep breath annnnnnndd….do it! Sort of like plucking a nose hair.
Yeah, Ron Brownstein is a real leftie. Hah!
First I noticed Rahm Emanuel ever mention Krugman — since he doesn’t agree with Krugman 99% of the time, it’s a teensy bit hypocritical for Emanuel to site Krugman now as “proof” we’re all with Krugman, who BTW thinks it a good idea to burn Lieberman in effigy & be “disgusted” with Obama.
The Constant Weader at http://www.RealityChex.com
Let’s get real. Emmanuel is a neoliberal corporatist establishment member/agent, and so has Obama proven to be. Don’t fall for either one of their b.s.(es) anymore.
I’ll put my record here to show I’m not a repug…that won’t prove anything to a fool like you, but OK sure.
I wasn’t aware I could not vote for them during a non election period. Where does one sign up for this?
If you mean I should register Republican, it wouldn’t matter as I’m an Independent. I find they try harder for your vote if they know you won’t blindly give it away.
And I take the OpenLeft theory of this. A vote for the Green party is a waste. It just won’t do anything. It’s easier to replace Moderate corporate dems with Republicans. It’s much much harder to replace a moderate with a progressive.
So yeah..for two years or so it will be the Dark ages again, but big whoop. We already seem to have a Republican as president and Republicans controlling the Senate.
May as well get the real Republicans in there, let them show how incompetent they are again and then replace them with actual progressives.
“But we’ll have to deal with 4 years of a republican president!”
I see no difference between a Republican and Orahma. So it doesn’t really matter to me.
That said, I would never vote for Palin and Huckabee. I don’t do religious windbags. But if it’s Pawlenty…fuck it..he’s Obama who actually calls himself a Republican.
What a bunch of immature comments. Grow up! Or as a post on dailykos yesterday put it, “Get a grip.” You all sound like screaming, bratty 2-year olds, and there’s nothing quite as annoying as that. Someone even posted they’ll be “voting Republican in 2012 and 2010 just for spite now.” Gee, that’s a swell idea; and even better for liberal interests. Get real, people. Obviously you had/have no committment to, or understanding of, progressive ideals; otherwise, you wouldn’t carry on like this. I hope you grow out of it.
Rahm Emmanuel needs to go to recover Obama’s base.
The Health Care Bill needs to be scrapped to recover Obama’s base.
Then Obama needs to treat his base with at least the same respect as the far right and DLC etc. That has not happened since he was elected.
Somehow I get the feeling that the more Obama alienates his base…hill , bill and rahm are delighted . And still think hill can be elected.
Don’t do that, it only encourages the wingnuts.
You are too caught up in the trap of party politics. It matters nothing to those you despise which way you vote as they own both equaly – zip, zero, zilch, nada!
Think it out!
Thanks for insulting all of us who have been trying all f*cking year to get a good bill out of the corp-rats in Congress.
Don’t let the door hit you.
Why would we be happy to be forced to buy crap insurance? Why would we be happy to keep on paying more for drugs than people in other countries pay? Why would we be happy to pay more for medical help than people in other countries do?
The GOP can keep stringing around the antiabortion crowd for decades since Reagan was President with promises of this year we elect a GOPer and he will put conservative antiabortion justices on the Supreme Court.
Us we are not suckers willing to be strung around. We either get what we want or all those Blue Dog swing districts where a few percent is all it takes to swing the district GOP or Dem?
Well don’t count on us being all enthused to vote next election. We wanted real healthcare, we compromised with the public option and keeping drug prices high now they want more F them!
We wanted the war to be over instead we get more troops in Afghanistan millions for war nothing for healthcare for Americans?
Nope Sorry good bye Blue Dogs we are only going to vote for Lefty candidates next election.
Uhhh….yea. Pawlenty=Obama? I guess you did “put your record on here.” Thanks for making it clear for other readers here.
As someone who has voted and organized for the Green Party, I hardly think a vote for them “is a waste.” Funny enough, I don’t like OpenLeft and haven’t stopped there in a year or more, so strange you’d draw those various conclusions. Oh well. Best of luck with your clever strategy.
Jerk is just pissed we plan to hold the Dems accountable for their actions jerk thinks we are as dumb as GOP voters:)
Betray us and we will **** you we fight back:)
*MODNOTE: violent references can result in your comment being moderated
Where’s your green party lately?
I’m all for 3rd parties..but no offense your party hasn’t been relevant…well ever.
Yep..Pawlenty = Obama. Obama hardly seems to actually be a Democrat, and Pawlenty has only turned into a real Republican because he needs to woo the base.
Kind of like How Obama lied to us to get the nomination.
In the end they’re both centrist corporate whores….so my comparison stands I feel.
boo frickin’ hoo. to quote superchicken, you knew the job was dangerous when you took it.
“You have no idea how many hours, how many hundreds of hours he has spent, how many phone calls he has made, how many meetings he has had.” … We need your help…”
No Rahm, these people below really need help, not your asinine and empty promises that only further your selfish political ambition:
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/18278
We won’t be tuning out Olbermann, Maddow, et al, but we will be tuning out YOU–because you tuned out THEM.
Thank you, mommy!
OpenDemocrats? They win my Veal Pen stamp of approval. Too bad Sirota’s gotten roped in to their web, but as Geddy Lee once said, “$10 is $10″.
And voting Republican ticket? You’re still voting FOR the same interests, FOR the system, and FOR the special interests that prop that system up. Neither party really cares if you vote for the other establishment party. The soap opera keeps rolling, the campaign consultants keep collecting, the rich keep leeching, and
EurasiaEastasiaEurasia keeps fighting. They mock fight like cats but when a third party comes into the mix they bring out the baseball bats. Watch the attacks on the WFP in New York and take particular note of who’s attacking it — if Murdoch were allied with the R party, wouldn’t he WANT a party to split D votes?Remember, you’re not betting on a sports contest. Selling out the country for the chance to win bragging rights for the next 2/4/6 years sounds a bit expensive to me. Third parties and indies will gain relevance even if they don’t win elections so long as fewer people succumb to two-party brainwashing by thinking only candidates that win actually matter. They tell the two-party system that they aren’t the only game in town. They provide solid, government-audited documentation that the D party has lost the support of the left and that their continued relevance depends on either providing results for the left OR punching hippies and chasing after “moderate” Rs.
How are minor parties ever going to be popular if people think they can’t vote for them because they’re not popular?
Sorry we’re upset that Obama turned out to be a fake progressive.
A 3rd is your salvation, not unlike Alcoholics Anonymous if you’re a hopeless drunk, etc
Shorter Rahm: We didn’t deliver 85% of what we promised but we expect 110% committment from you.
Sure. Good luck, you’ll need lots of it.
Rahm relishes this kind of conflicting message. It allows him to pick and choose his answers based on his audience, even if his contribution to the double messages is consistently to kick somebody, anybody, and then claim they’re a DFH, so it’s OK. That’s because it allows his shop, though not very credibly, to claim one thing while doing another.
I don’t think Rahm understands the basic mindset that separates authoritarian GOP followers, on the one hand, and independent and progressive minded Democrats on the other. Authoritarians eat that shit up. Democrats call it what it is, bullshit.
3. He wasn’t ready for this job and is on an expensive learning curve
4. He’s playing 6 dimensional-chess and there’s a great healthcare plan an an alternate universe
5. He always was a cynical lying sack of feathers
Aversion therapy is a valid modality

3) He is owned by Rahm much like Rove to Bush.
4) He has surrounded himself with lobbyist controlled, money grubbing liars who tell him the hippies don’t matter anyway because they wouldn’t dare vote for someone else.
5) He enjoys “playing” the rubes, just as Clinton did before him.
6) All of the above.
I’ll play the odds and go with all of the above.
As for working hard behind the scenes – one can assume that carrying corporate water and selling snake oil to the rubes is probably hard work.
