"Dare not call me 'bitter'!"
Senate Democrats emerged from a special caucus meeting Monday night determined to pass a health-care bill by Christmas — but without the Medicare buy-in plan that liberals had sought as an alternative to a government insurance option.
The Medicare buy-in was never warmly embraced by moderate Democrats, but independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman(Conn), whose vote is needed to break a GOP filibuster, appears to have dealt the proposal a mortal blow when he informed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) on Sunday that he wouldn’t support the buy-in plan in any form.
Friends, Beltwayans, countrymen: I come to bury health care, not to praise it. The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. So let it be with health care. Ambition for reform should have been made of sterner stuff, and liberals have lost their reason. Behold, for I am your new leader!
Oh, and I have a few demands. This list is not inclusive and is subject to additions and amendments, depending on how I feel in that particular moment:
1. You shall hereinafter refer to me as “Josephus Imperator”. Alternatively, if I am in the mood, you may address me in the familiar as “Rex Senatorium”. Only my family and close friends are permitted to call me “Shivmeister”.
2. My birthday, February 24th, shall henceforth be observed as a national holiday. However, I have so decreed that only insurance company and pharmaceutical industry employees shall be allowed to take the day off in celebration of my nativity.
3. Caricaturists depicting me as the cartoon character “Droopy Dawg” or the father in the 1980s television sitcom “ALF” shall be summarily executed.
4. Web revolutionaries Jane Hamsher and Markos Moulitsas are hereby banished from this country to a faraway land where there is no Internet by which to foment rebellion against me or my wife, Hadassah Regina.
5. I will remain at liberty to attend the Senate Democratic Caucus meetings at my pleasure, despite my undocumented registration as a Republican.
6. I reserve the right to remain the key swing vote on every vitally important piece of legislation passing through either House of Congress.
7. I will not only retain my current chairmanship, but am now claiming the gavels for the Judiciary, Appropriations, and Finance committees.
8. We begin bombing Iran in 5 minutes.

Wherever you are, Senator Kennedy, I hope you’re not watching this desecration of your life’s work. It is absolutely shameful.

Fuck Lieberman, the horse he came in on, Harry Reid, and Obama. In no particular order.
This is the bed Democrats made, this stained and fetid future.
Nice.
It is almost like the want the Republicans back in control.
Hi, DrDick.
I think a rusty garden implement should be involved there, also. Preferably sideways.
I wonder if Teddy is free to come back and haunt a bunch of senators?
So much for change, huh?
It is so totally over, until the average worker realizes how much we’ve been screwed.
Example: hubby & I bought into the first offering of FEHB long term care insurance, on the basis of the premiums never rising (we even selected the inflation protection option). Guess what? We got a notice this week that there was an “error” in our policy, and that the premiums were rising! This is only the beginning, folks.
It is horrifying to think of our futures. We are all serfs now.
Nice work!
I think you’ve nailed HoJo’s petulant self-delusion via Imagined Greatness.
Most excellently well done ;^}
Ever get the feeling the whole health care reform thing was just a masquerade?
“Whew, this governance shit is so tiring – here, you take it.”
yep.
9. Senate Democrats may line up to the right, to kiss my sweet Connecticut ass.
Re #1: How about calling him “Brevis Veho”?
May Joe Lieberman crack his balls and fornicate with sheep.
I think Teddy should bring some friends, like some of the thousands who will die because of Joe Lieberman.
Still chortling…
yes
All the shovels were in use, getting money to banksters as quickly as possible, so Senate Democrats had to resort to actual legislation in order to favor their other friends, the insurers?
I am beginning to get that feeling about this whole democracy thing. Jefferson was right, we need another revolution to keep (or get back) our democracy.
Biggus Dickus incarnate.
If you look up “insufferable” in Websters, this photo should be front and center.
I think a rusty garden implement should be involved there, also. Preferably sideways.
You might want to go with the Craftsman. If you break it, you can pick up a free replacement…
9. Senate Democrats may line up to the right, to kiss my raisined Connecticut ass.
fixed it for ya
I don’t understand the hold that this ass has on Democrats — what exactly are they afraid of? Kick him off every committee he’s on and backbench the twerp.
Lieberman Family Motto:
Wouldn’t be collegial.
I hope that you’re right, and that HoJo gets treated like an outcast after today’s tantrum.
Talk to a governor.
If it’s a masquerade, they’re all aliens here on Planet Earth collecting nutmeg with PJEvans’s rusty implements and sending intergalactic updates about the Strange Delusional Lieberman Of WellpointUnitedofWallStreet, LLC
Everyone else must come in to work at least an hour early and stay at least an hour late. Without pay, of course.
Fuck collegiality and civility while we are at it.
707!
There is NO difference in the elected offals that we support, be it Donkey Or Elephant.
They all serve the corporate overlords, first, and last.
We know this, it’s basic, and once again I’m preachin to your choir.
Sorry. My bad.
The Change, It’s Hard To Come By.
Oh yes, because a form of government run health care would be soooo awesome. Just look at how corruption and failure exists in Medicare. And you people think offering another government bureaucracy would be helpful? Reform is needed. Everyone agrees to that; liberals, conservatives, libertarians, even people in the insurance industries. But what the dems are offering is utter crap.
LOL!
I suspect that is his next move, to get on board with Charles Lane’s golden gem of stimulating the economy by slashing the minimum wage.
10. I, Clodius Leslie & Gelatinous McCainux will hit Kabul Bazaar for some Rug Shopping, where ….
… *The Deals Are Explosive*
Watertiger !
Our glorious Lieberman-friendly media needs to stop calling today’s capitulation a “compromise” — only in Ezra Klein’s fevered brain is this anything close to compromise, since liberals got nuthin’.
I’m sure there will be lots of volunteers.
(Standing Rule 0: ‘Death Will Not Release You’.)
I hate to break it to you, Teddy, but I believe that ‘shovel’ is a legislative Term of Art for ‘toothpick.’
Thus, the challenges involved in getting it to the public (because it magically turns into a toothpick whenever pointed toward ‘public’ or a ‘public good’).
When pointed toward Wall Street, it morphs into a large Caterpillar excavator, which as you surely recognize is the necessary ‘robustness’ required to heave the sums that Wall Street receives.

David Gergen says, on ACGay360, that liberals better get used to it: there will likely be Stupak language and maybe other disappointments in the US Senate before Harry Reid is done doing Obama’s bidding.
Feeling? A feeling?
Are you fucking kidding, New Yawker?
Set up, like a bowling pin!!!!
From the get go, and history supports my negative view!!!
Your snarky in yer post is good . . . nice touch . . .
But a feeling? HAH!!!
It’s a feeling without lube . . . . before a violent violation . . .
Has been, for a long time, but you know that . . . the snark don’t embolden me no more.
I want fuckin solutions and progress WT . . . change.
/Endrant
It’s “get back” and I’m in. Again. Corporatocracies need to strangled, they don’t die of natural causes.
The day’s wages are to be tithed to the insurance and pharmaceutical industries…I mean, churches.
It’s not Lieberman! It’s all of them!
What part of that do you not understand?
Compromise with Joe after being publicly called out like this makes Obama look weak it makes Harry look weaker and it makes Rahm who tried to force a deal on Harry look even weaker than Harry. I’m sure I’m going into negative numbers here.
I love how liberals have so much hate for corporations. You do realize that without them a hefty sum of us wouldn’t have jobs, right?
Well, we agree on that last sentence, anyway.
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D suck, yes, and look who wrote them. The rest of it, not so much. (If they’d get wise and index Medicare and SSDI taxes for inflation, we’d be a lot better off. And up the ceiling to about $2 million dollars: if millionaires want to collect, they can f*cking well pay on their whole income, like we do.)
This is just Lieberman wringing out the last concession possible and getting the maximum stroking of his ego. I doubt that he intends to kill the healthcare bill, which is a pity really because even without these most recent demands of his, it was a steaming pile.
At this point, I would dearly like to see this bill fail and for Sanctimonious Joe to get the blame for it.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy being a serf for one of the corporate lords.
So long as it’s just one money party losing to the other money party, the eternal-war grudge match bread and circus plays on, consultants stay employed, the upper-middle class wins. If indies or minors take over, though… well, they won’t be allowed to, because that’s dangerous. To them.
Just lift the cap on payroll taxes entirely. I have long said that would resolve all funding issues for Social Security and Medicare. It would also make the system a lot less regressive.
At the end of the American Empire, I guess it’s only fitting that the coup de grace would come in the shriveled form of Joe Gollum Lieberman.
Where’s our Tommy Douglas?
Lairman be thy name.
Tithed?
That’s gonna really piss Big Insurance and Big PhRMA off, watertiger. They’re used to getting 30-40%, not a measly 10%.
*sigh*
once again, my intended understatement is misread.
I read that as “Rex Santorum,” which pleased me.
I hope you don’t mind WT that we still make regular use of your proverbial desk on nights such as these at Eschaton …
Not gonna happen Hoss, they are all in it for the same game and gain . . .
All for the 1% and the elite.
Until the masses accept this as a class struggle, their frustrations will fall FAR short of the reality they face.
FDL? Mz. Hamsher? I’m on her side . . . *G*
But the Pups are a diverse and loose lot, and many are still confused as to what the fight is.
The fight is a class war . . . the have’s and the have not’s.
Nothing less, nothing more.
Anything else is simply kabuki wars, psy ops, and more, as strategies to wage the struggle.
*G*
No I’m not a radical, I’m just a fuckin realist . . *G*
Isn’t already?
I believe that after dragging it out as long as possible and exposing his former party as a bunch of feckless rubes, Joe intends to vote with the GOP. He is a vain and petty man, bent on revenge.
I have no problem with that. They might even be able to lower the rate a smidgeon, although I doubt that they’d do that.
That’s your problem, watertiger. You’re just so shy and quiet and demure, and don’t really say what you mean.
You really need to quit holding back.
If we had government healthcare at cheaper costs we would have more money in the economy to crate jobs and less sick days since everyone would have insurance.
Or lets put it this way I don’t care who gets my money private insurance or the government I just want to live the longest and pay the least amount.
That means Government Healthcare!
Agreed!

And F–k you too, Joe.
Mere mortals cannot compare to the perfection of corporations. Ask Scalia and Roberts.
I can think of only one explanation for why Lieberman has come out in such a self-contradictory way against the weak Medicare buy-in proposal:
Reid informed him privately that the CBO score on the deal is not good and that he’s going to announce that idea must be panned for something that will be more effective.
What we’re seeing is Joe pushing back.
That means that we have to push back too and call forcefully for a public option now!
Reconciliation = Majority Rule.
[bats eyelashes, hides snarl behind fan] ;-)
Gracias, WT. You are missed in the threads over there.

Joe, Harry, And RahmObama . .
I’m with ya on this.
Time to call the festering gobs of . . . what they are.
Lose this shit. Start over. Be vigilant in the prog o shpere . . . and make it better!
I’ve always thought that would be a GREAT idea.
The only problem, as I see it [and I am NOT an expert on this] is that you’d have to make some adjustment so the higher “deductions” don’t get these more highly paid folks higher benefits.
The first “segment” of the “payroll tax” can continue with the myth that it’s “my account;” the rest of it can just be a tax, like the income tax.
The payroll tax is so incredibly regressive. I wish labor or others would get behind proposals to change it.
I am curious to see if Joe demands to be in on the Senate-House negotiations.
So, we attack Joe’s wife and he changes his vote on HCR. Not saying we shouldn’t have done it but am saying Joe’s is willing to kill people to exact his revenge.
High time we take the immortal words of Frederic Dougless into advisement:
“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”
The party part is immaterial where power is so evidently the driving force.
Which I have no problem with this time around. If Lieberman wants to kill this monstrosity out of vanity, I could care less, as long as it is dead.
This is why I think he doesn’t. If the White House were serious, they would threaten to yank his chairmanship and seniority, even kick him unceremoniously from the caucus. So I think they see him as just grandstanding but nothing to worry about. What Lieberman could be doing is sticking it to the Senate liberals by giving them a choice between either kowtowing to him and eating a shit sandwich or taking responsibility and blame for killing the bill.
I don’t DO understatements . . *G*
I guess, I could learn to accept others . . .
I just don’t VALUE them . . . *G*

What are you saying … that HoJo wants to take credit for Reid’s decision of turfing the medicare buy-in ?
NO!!! NO HE’S NOT!
He’s a paid schill!
PAID!
CLASS WAR!
Paid!
Sigh, tell Bob I flipped out, but I’m ok after a few crackers and apple slices . .
*G*
lol
No, he was playing games even before this. He decided to pull this yesterday; Jane started going after his wife because of that.
It is no surprise that this latest version of HCR is going to score poorly. What were they thinking?
Olympian Joe is really a Norseman. He wields the legislative Hammer of Thor only because Harry the Reidless bequeathed it him. He can take it away whenever he likes. Joe does nothing to earn its retention, nor the retention of the committee chairs he sits in without fulfilling the responsibilities that go along with them. Harry the Reidless could borrow a Reid or a boxing glove, and use the same legislative techniques Bush’s Senate leader used to pass budget busting tax cuts.
In reality, Joe Lieberman is no Olympian, except to Hadassah, or a Norseman. He’s a wannabe director of a sword-and-sandle epic. He has cast himself in the lead, and confuses costumery with time travel. He deserves to have the open-toed sandle he usually sports in his mouth redirected up his toga.
This is legislation that will be stamped on the forehead of every Democrat for a generation. If the legislation is this flawed, it doesn’t have to be passed by the end of Hanukkah or Christmas, or New Year’s, Easter or Passover for that matter. The Dems should sort out their internal squabbles first – and decide whether they are Democrats or ConservaDemRepublicans – and then try to pass legislation.
Well, there IS her demure side . . . I’ll give ya that . . . I like her piccy’s on Renagade, too.
*G*
I think Jane had this going before yesterday. I could be wrong. It has happened before.
You need a lawyer. Any error in the policy is the insurance company’s liability, and they will loose, generally becuase the drafter (writer) of the contract picks up all liabilities from “errors” in drafting (unless you wrote your insurance policy, and that’s about as likly as I’m able to get pregnant (I’m male)).
His boney ass?
Did I win?
Killin me, just killin me . .
Good though . . .*G*
WHAT?
*G*
That sounds like the sort of multi-dimensional chess this White House would peddle.
I think our president is going to find, to his dismay, appeasement does not work.
Who is this Bob?
I said
that I think we got the point.
We hate large monopolistic corporations. We also hate trolls. By the way did you practice to be so ignorant, or was that inherited from your mother’s side?
Hmm, given we don’t know what Reid submitted to CBO, it’s hard to formulate it’s bad news in any way or another.
And then to mask that up, before we KNOW what CBO scored, and WHAT they scored?
Yer way ahead of the process, hoss . . . .
Now, if ya wanna rant a bit about past history and such, and what we are LIKELY to see from CBO, or the shit Harry sent them (IF we ever see that) . . . well then, I could rawhk witcha!
ROFL !!!
The Cannons have arrived !
Bob is the progressive phoenix, the eagle of liberty, or perhaps just Ratfood’s pet bird.
Mary Mary, Joe is shit. He don’t count.
I wanna understand that . . . and I don’t.
Break it down a bit more, if ya don’t mind . . .
I don’t get it . . . but I think I WANT to get it . . .
That true, ratfood? I’ve seen you and demi discussing Bob, and never got it!
I love my Senator Sherrod Brown, but seeing his face tonight on Countdown, made me weep.
I am done with this President, I am done with this Congress. I will raise no money, lift not one finger, or vote for this President again, and my Senator, my Congressman again. All Democrats. The do not deserve my vote or my support. Simple as that. Really. Simple.
I should not have suggested he is motivated only by vanity and desire for revenge, Joe is a corp tool first and foremost.
I think if the last year has proven anything it is that while Obama might be okay at campaigning (with the right staff and the deck stacked against his opponents) he is an inept bungler at governance. I don’t see him or any Dem leaders having the guts to strip Joe of anything.
Having said that, I have come to agree with you that this package deserves to be defeated… and it’s only going to get worse before they’re finished.
Given the mess that’s been made of it, I think people will forgive them, but probably not unHoly Joe.
I was really saddened to see him seem so down or depressed. It was sad. He is not my Senator but he seems to be a true Democrat who cares.
The progressives got NOTHING, the evil insurance industry stocks are soaring!
Is there nothing we can do????????

~~~EDITED IN MODERATION~~~sanctimonious shit, Lieberman, fuck face.
Sherrod was totally gobsmacked. Exhausted after doing everything he could.
Bob is progressive in that he begins his day by eating and continues to eat until he goes to bed. He likes him some liberty… in moderation. He is my pet bird, or I am his pet person… all in one’s perspective.
Most despised Democrat (he was once a Democrat, wasn’t he) ever?
He gets my vote.
And thanks for creating this monster, Harry Reid. Heck of a job, Harry.
He is a truly caring man, and Dem. He does not take government insurance either, saying that until all Americans get a public option, he pays for his own health plan. His sad face tonight said it all to me.
Bob says,”It’s twue, it’s twue.” :-)
Exactly, and we all know it.
I have resigned my self to the fact that I belong to my cats. Bob is a veritable thunderbird of liberty.
and yet deprecate agitation,
Boot this guy out of his facocked chairmanship…ASAP. Excellent article!
Actually, I have never thought to ask before, but of which variety of avian is Bob?
I just checked and that EW thread is still going, although it looks like your friend lefty got tired or bmaz finally threw him out.
Since that was my first blog post ever…It’s been nice knowing you all.
The thread improved after bmaz showed up.
Noisy critter but a good pal.
I could say that about my cats.
It has been said, but I will say it again, my contempt for Lieberman knows no bounds.
what number?
To be fair he only dirties a few each day, except for yesterday when I mixed up two months worth of bird mash… that pretty well fills two sinks.
My contempt for Joe Lieberman, in imitation of Jane’s, knows no bounds.
Also: I’m Spartacus.
What is this bird mash of which you speak and is it any relation to sour mash? You making parakeet whiskey now?
Skimming through it looks like bmaz was there earlier than I realized. Depends on what you like. Just look for longer comments that aren’t by tarheellefty. Maybe stick to the last hundred comments or so.
Bailing Out Lieberman’s Obsession
As a worshipper of the if it ain’t broken — don’t fix it power elite, Joe knows the path of least resistance.
When Karl Rove dumped $20 million into his 2004 campaign then cut the throat of the actual republican candidate, Lieberman got the message.
It’s always been about his power, and the easiest way to expand it, especially when someone else is left to pay the price.
Santayana 2.0 corollary: Those who are powerful enough to dump their risks and losses on others have nothing to fear from either forgetting or misrepresenting history.
Doc…? Is that really you…??? It’s been like forever since I crossed threads with ya…! ;-)
I did call Harry Reid’s office today and told them Harry was no leader, we need to be rid of Liarman, etc. etc.
That did a lot of good. Not.
Thanks friend. Let’s move forward — oh, shit I’m so depressed.
It is his staple. Wholegrain pasta, brown rice, sweet potatoes, carrots, kidney beans, kale, corn all blended together. I portion it into daily servings and freeze it. He also gets a small handful of Cheerios, a little fruit, cheese, peanuts most days. About once a month a few tiny bites of steak.
I thought you were safe and secure in a undisclosed bunker up in that marxist country… up north somewhere’s…? ;-)
No one here at the FDL water-cooler really believes any of this commenting has an affect – do you? Surely you don’t think that any one of us has or can have any impact on this issue. The only real players in this are the creators of the perception reality.
That is not us.
Keep yer chin up, there’s always something to be thankful for.
contempt…Lieberman…never subside…
Chocolate Cheescake? Where was I?
A well provisioned and cared for bird is our Bob. That almost sounds like some of the meals I fix.
To me, this looks like it’s all Obama. Joe’s just a tool, like Rahm. Just someone to take the heat off Obama. I never took him for a liar, until now.
I take it you’re new here and haven’t met Jane.
I know someone who had a Patagonian conure. Very loudly noisy!
He let the wings go unclipped, and the bird’s behavior improved because it could go from cage upstairs to portaperch downstairs (split-level house) to find out what his person was doing. Unfortunately, one day it was getting a bath outside, and decided to leave home.
Awfully nice of you to comment here… about the fecklessness of commenting here.
Actually it was ’06, not that it matters. Point taken.
I think we may have us a concern troll here.
The Bushies thought the exact same thing.
Mine would fill the Marianas trench, to the surface.
Sounds like you’re bird’s got his keeper well trained. How many phrases do you know, RF? :)
I’ve tried the mash. Nourishing but bland.
Go newt, grrrr!
When D leadership said of Joe “We might need him for close votes”, somehow this isn’t what I had in mind… but tonight I have the sinking feeling that it might be exactly what they had in mind all along.
He is a true liberal. Ohio is very lucky to have him; the Senate is lucky to have him as a member.
Time for me to toddle off. Have to wield the bloody pen of justice tomorrow and grade term papers and final exams. Take care all and always remember to just scroll on by.
I’m sorry to hear that. Bob averages about 8 hours a day out of his cage but gets too aggressive if he can fly, so I have to keep his wings clipped. You hate to do it but it’s for his own (and my) protection.
Darkblack! I love that one!
Hey Chris
I am a little short on the old ‘patience’ thing tonight.
You guys freezing your bunz off?
Bob is a rescued bird who had a hard life for his first six years so I think he is entitled to a little spoiling. Anyway, even a hermit (like me) needs some company.
For what it is worth, Christine, I too am very depressed. I really wanted to see some change here, but all I see is more profits for insurance companies, another wringer we are put through in the dying gasps of our empire.
You’re right on that CT senate election.
However, the most egregious Lieberman behavior was in 2004 in judiciary & foreign relations as he deliberately did to John Kerry what he’s doing today to real health care reform.
Lieberman is a perfect lightning rod. Everybody already hates him, he’s serving his last term, and he’s totally willing because his real constituency is the insurance industry. With Joe doing his part Obama just gets a little dirt on himself. Screw Obama. Kill this bill.
Dang, you guys can keep that.
Me too, newt, and a bit sad (though ratfood helped cheer me up). Temps are up here, heat wave at 45! Tomorrow much colder. Lovely to see all the pups in charge.
G’nite, DrDick.
Did Bob serve a full term in the U.S. senate? Sounds like hell to me.
The Bush aide said this “reality-based community” consists of people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” Suskind nodded in agreement and muttered something favorable about the principles of the Enlightenment, only to be cut off by the aide.
“That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” the Bush aide told the journalist. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to study what we do.”
The trick is to keep moving so the blood doesn’t freeze.
I was so hopeful bgrothus, then skeptical, then careful, then, oh hell, I’m with you. He is such a turd, oh JOE!
Nah, he doesn’t have larceny in his heart, hence unqualified to hold high office.
Think I’ll head out, splendid evenings to all.
Cheers! See you soon.
Not to mention the eyeballs. Golly, how I hate when that happens.
Cutting the Rovian Knot
History’s actors? OK, sure, then they’re history’s crappy reality show actors who will never work again in this
towncountry. Sheesh.*oof* it reminds me of the good old days…! Not…! Heh…! It’s a brisk 70 F here…!
Nite Rat, good to see you.
I got kicked out of my insurance, and I now am in our state pool for “denial of coverage.” It is the lowest I have ever paid for insurance, my first actual “pool.” Since I am healthy, I have not had to use the insurance to discover how good or bad it is.
I wanted this for everyone who does not have/cannot afford insurance. We are all just fucked.
By Joe, it is GROSS.
And if you cross them, they stay that way.
;>)
I don’t think he is working for Obama.
If he was, he would be all for triggers.
Hey, Welcome to the Lake, Surtt!
True and they made the mistake of thinking they could create reality and ignore us.
It’s safe to say JoeLie is not working for the best interest of the citizens of the US.
Instead of the nuclear option, which selise has (convincingly, IMHO) shown would be unwise even now, let’s revise the Constitution to allow for the recall of Senators.
Wait just a minute, I’ll bet Bob has a higher IQ than at least a third of the senate (you know which states I mean,) he works for peanuts, and has all of the best talking points memorized.
Now, if he’d just bring all of his friends with him we could use a scene on the senate floor out of Hitchcock’s The Birds.
Sorry. Had to step away. If you’re still around.
No. I’m saying that Reid would find out the CBO score well before he announces it publicly, that he told Lieberman that the news for that weak Medicare buy-in is not good not matter how many loopholes they put into it, and that Reid told Lieberman that they’re going back to some kind of a weak public option.
We’re seeing Lieberman push back.
They still don’t seem to realize that their failures to control reality and our talking about it is why their poll numbers are below an African American with 10% unemployment still after how many months their polling is below 50%.
Heck it might be a year now below 50% polling.
“2. My birthday, February 24th, shall henceforth be observed as a national holiday. However, I have so decreed that only insurance
companycorps andpharmaceutical industrydrug corps . . . ”Fixed it for you — Corps are not “companies.” Don’t feel bad as Ms. Hamsher, Ms Maddow, Mr. Hartmann and everyone else in the media make the same error.
It appears that whatever is left of HCR, after all we have been through, it is Worse than what we have already.
I am signing off now. I have looked and dug deep, but I just cannot find the depth of my contempt for JoeLie. Truly, a despicable, damnable creature.
Thanks for your efforts tonight WT. I think you have revealed just the thinnest veneer of his veniality.
Bob’s a parakeet? Thought he was a parrot .. .
Either way, you’ve brought him to our attention, as a good boid . . .
And you as a good boid holder . .
Sweet. *G*
As my pal Suzanne could put it…Obama’s the salt, Joe’s the pepper..and HCR is the perp.
;>)
Good evening, bg,
and I agree completely.
Let’s not all expend our energies on despising Hojo… We need to save some up for Rahmbo…
What?!?!?!?
Are are you pullin the plug, DB?
*shocked*
No, no, Larue. Merely reponding to one of Josephus’ dictats in ‘tiger’s OP. I’ve got nothing to quit for yet.
;>)
Glad to be here.
I’ve been lurking (and posting a little) for a few weeks now.
Yeast, and some copper tubing?
*G*
Glad to meet you :)
*sighofrelief*
Hi CT – great to see you again! How’s life on the mountain?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozymandias
It could always be better, but, surviving here in paradise…! *g*
Do you think we can beg Sherrod to slip a rider into the bill that drops the mandate?
I remember that the republicans have done it a few times, now us citizens that need healthcare but cannot afford it can not have to pay the IRS equally prohibitive fines.
Try!
Good idea, why not?
Hey Surtt – nice to meet you.
Drop the mandate.
Ensure a ban on recissions.
Ensure a ban on pre existings.
I could worship a ton of fantasies.
Bless any of them to come true . . . .
I wonder if Obama still thinks it was clever to campaign for Lieberman against Lamont in 2006. That was one of the earliest tells about what an establishment re-tread our new president is.
Any experts out there in the mechanics of using ‘reconciliation’?
Can we do a series of HCR ‘reconciliation’ bills?
How many times can it be used to enhance the previous HCR bill?
Obama doesn’t show any sign of being upset with Lieberman at all.
The Progressives in Congress should now join the fevered effort to dismantle health care REFORM, and do it with vengeance until what remains is: “Drop the mandate. Ensure a ban on recissions. Ensure a ban on pre existings.”
I’ll buy that, no problem!
And then they should get to work reselling the real deal: Single Payer, until it’s done.
Thanks!
Still thinks? This is the pay-off! Obama’s thinking he made a hell of a deal. A little time in CT and he can hand his buds billions. Now to rush through whatever turd the Senate drops before anyone gets time to really look at it. God, I hope someone can kill this thing, sight unseen. Just on principle.
I’m not much for believing in superstitions but I’m counting the days thill this year ends. As if the change of year will bring better days.
Seems that since Obama took office, this year has been about the worst one I’ve lived thru. Like everyone else I had high hopes for his Presidency, tho I kept waiting to hear him actualy say something that gave me cause to believe he was cut from the FDR mold. And he never actually did.
He did way he was a free trader, not for gay marrage(equality), ect ect
But I do remember him saying he wasn’t for mandates for citizens buying healthcare insurance. And it was kind of a biggish thingy between him and Hillary.
I think we would be better off if Obama would not sign the bill and called for a cooling off period, to be resumed in 2010, after the elections.
That is if he actually wants some real reform. And I can’t have faith that that is what he wants.
How can you tell that Rahm is not floating another trial balloon? That is a not rhetorical question. He does it over and over like some kind of Jedi mind trick, and it usury works. He is good, the best. Don’t forget Senator Lieberman could still come back for more. When I see President Obama with Senator Reid and they are smiling about the accomplished mission, then I’ll believe it.
Senator Reid could still announce that he is using reconciliation. Then we could have a non ironic mission accomplished banner, and President Obama and Senator Reid could celebrate a real victory. Also, women would then not have to give up hard won reproductive rights to get the votes to pass this thing.
I have noidea about Rahm, I see him more as a corporate shill, at best. If his family is ok, stuff the rest mentality.
I hadn’t beleived that of Obama untill now. Tho to be sure I’ve had reservations about many many things he has done. Primarily his refusal to investigate Bush illegality, anti-Constitutional legislation, and war of choice and occupation.
To be sure he is batteling the devils legacy that he inherited and no doubt McCain would have been far worse and Lord help us if McCain had died in office.
Yes Obama has only been in office for a year. So how much worse can the next 3 years be?……
Hope you’re right. I’d still like to see Rahm get his tie caught in some metaphorical wood-chipper. The immediate loss of Lieberman’s Homeland Security Committee chairmanship better be a foregone conclusion after all this BS.
Being a non-violent type of pinko lefty douch, the idea of the wood chipper thrilled my heart. lol
After the vote, where Lieberman still votes no, or Nelson does, we’ll see what Reid does. He’s pretty much toast tho.
On the My Left Nutmeg web site, there is a sign that says “Connecticut Welcomes You / Birthplace of George W. Bush” and below that, a sign that says “We apologize.”.
The Nutmeg State is going to have to alter their sign a bit.
Joe is doing us a favor, it is a horrible bill. I just wish the progressives in congress had the courage that Joe has. Joe is willing to stop the whole thing by hisself and he dont gve a rats ss what Obama, Rahm or Reed thinks about it. I have gained a new respect for the man. I am tired of pnk ss democrats getting on tv talking about what they are not going to vote for if they dont get what they want only to watch them bow down later and swallow hard.Pelosi, Weiner, Grayson, Burris, they all said what they wldnt do and now look they are like little btchs cheerleading the president’s bllsht hlthcare reform. If the president gets his way and this bill gets passed buy health insurance stocks bcz they are going to grow thru the roof.
“So how much worse can the next 3 years be?”
I don’t even WANT to contemplate that!
there would be no story if C
hief of Staff Rahm EmanuelPresident Barack Obama hadn’t interceded… …EmanuelObama didn’t just leave it to Reid to find a solution.EmanuelObama specifically suggested Reid give Lieberman the concessions he seeks on issues like the Medicare buy-in and triggers.“It was all about ‘do what you’ve got to do to get it done. Drop whatever you’ve got to drop to get it done,” the aide said. All of
EmanuelObama’s prescriptions, the source said, were aimed at appeasing Lieberman–not twisting his arm.– Fixed
Advice to Rahm on future dealings with Joe: More stick, less carrot.
Please sign Grayson’s petition, if you haven’t already. If it didn’t take 60 votes to even talk about anything in the Senate, Joe and the conservadems wouldn’t have been able to ruin everything. Oh yeah, climate change might have a chance then, too. The House actually passes stuff. A lot of things could get done if it weren’t for this pathetic excuse of a fake-democratic body. House of Lords, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Bahaha. Until I read the remainder of your sentence, I thought you were talking about the troll from the prior diary!!!
EPU’d from Knoxville’s over at the Seminal:
From the moment Obama declared single payer was “off the table” even though it would cut costs dramatically and provide universal coverage the fix was in for a half-@ssed bill that they could wave in the air and claim victory. The media will play along. The question is how much longer will the American people put up with this charade? Obama and the entire Democratic leadership has proven themselves unworthy to govern.
Just guessing that one of the health industry associations has a Billy Tauzin-like offer to Lieberman of a $1 million a year job come 2012. He wants to keep his options open.
The thing that is puzzling about his stance on this, aside from the fact that he was for it in September, is that the private insurers don’t really want these people, and the numbers who would enroll are small.
You know, all of the balls in the Liberal/Progressive Democratic movement are sitting in the Secretary of State’s Office. We made a horrible mistake. Obama is a wimp. He gives a great speech, but he hasn’t got any guts. LBJ would have twisted Lieberman’s head off and poured vinegar down his windpipe. A lot of people will die because of last night’s decision. This isn’t health care reform. It is a windfall for the Insurance Companies that caused the problem, a wink from the whores in the Senate to their Johns on K Street and an excuse for Obama to pat himself on the back as the New Age Gandhi-Messiah-Reformer. I agree with Bluetoe2,”Obama and the entire Democratic leadership has proven themselves unworthy to govern.”
I truly believe the differences between Clinton and Obama would have been very minor.
Obama isn’t wimping out, I think he’s working hard and effectively for those who matter to him most. Of course, believing that would mean believing that he’s a liar.
Perhaps, it is hard to tell what might have been. I supported Clinton in the beginning up until she threw her support behind him. I will tell you this Dick, I was over twenty-five years on the front lines of health care in this country. This garbage they are proposing will not do. Health insurance companies can get around anything. They have done it for years. From what I have read and understand Washington will not even be eliminating their monopolies from state to state. That has been one of their greatest instruments of abuse. In point of fact, I do believe that Obama is liar.
