Better, probably, on CD — the ads were annoying. But it was moving. How do we slap the crap out of the greedy overlords? And Matt Damon grew up next door to Howard Zinn….no wonder Damon seems like a good guy.
Me too. We were in Ashville about 15 years ago. The town was just getting back to life with an artistic community of potters and carvers. The Grove Park Inn is the annual site of an Arts and Crafts Conference every February. MrCE and I want to tour the south to see decorative arts in old houses, but it will have to wait for a few years.
Emptywheel and Bmaz and the reat of legalese of Firedoglake wade through a lot of legal cases. I have been too the last week or so. A morass of opposing decision in the upper court from the lower ones.
How are you tonight ES. CT was here last night.
Hi you all! ES, this is really nice.
Loo Hoo, Chris, I went to a gingerbread house party one time. Oh what a sad little house I made, the walls all fallen, lol.
I agree. The terrace at the Grove Park is spectacular – huge and fabulous views. Great place for lunch or drinks. Also, the enormous walk in fireplaces are breathtaking. The structure is gorgeous.
Perhaps not the best rooms in Asheville for a non-group stay, imo. Really good B&Bs in the area. A’ville is likely the most liberal city in NC, and proud of it! Perfect place to stop on a Blue Ridge Parkway trip.
Very Cool. Are you on the Mountain. How is the house building going? I remember when you lost your housing and camped in the back yard in a tent. Your wife had a foot injury now you too? And in between keeping your politicians in line. You be busy boy.
HA! My daughter is making an absolutely beautiful gingerbread house. She’s using-and I’d never heard of this before, chocolate and candy covered sunflower seeds. They are the Christmas lights decorating the outside of the house. Perfect.
On our way down the Blue Ridge Pkwy, we stopped in a tiny town, maybe Little Switzerland?, and had a great meal, just like in the real thing! We visited Grove Park Inn for the Friday seafood buffet — OMG it was wonderful.
I’ve been dousing the fruitcake with Famous Grouse, it is smelling oh, so lovely. Baked chocolate bottom coconut squares and made melted Bissingers chocolate bark with cranberries and toasted almonds today, and that is THAT. I’m done.
Hey BigBro. I’m making my list and checking it twice.
Actually, my wife is Christmasizing the house, which means that I’ve got to move all of my shit. I get grumpy for a while each year, but then I sort of get into the spirit of everything. The non-grumpy part started this weekend.
i’m so sorry to hear about your head injury! Don’t worry, i’m sure you’ll come to your senses sooner or later and stop liking that sorry-ass team. I’m sure bret will totally blow it at a crucial moment. Counting on it in fact.
yessir! I’ve got relatives and friends watching me like a bunch of hawks. Vigilant. “Don’t tip your head! Don’t lift that! Nag nag nag.” *g* i know it’s cuz they lurrvs me.
Hope you got to see the Biltmore House! The magnitude of the place is breathtaking. 250 rooms iirc. Hard to believe a family could have lived there and it’s in great shape.
I believe they still close it to the public at Christmas so the family can gather.
Last time I checked, and we visited all those years ago, the price tag to visit was steep. Yikes, good thing MrCE and I have a membership in ICOM and AAM (International Commission of Museums, American Association of Museums).
OK, you old kitchen horse, here’s me duck for the peeps showing up on christmas eve:
One Nice Duck. I asked Oliver’s (my local cool butcher) to get me a 7 pounder; it’s on the way .
I shall parge this duck, you know, shove an herb butter under the skin. I shall smush (if that’s a word) our plum jelly on the outside of this duck, and bake it in a medium oven at 350 degrees. It should take about 2 hours.
Chris, I’ve been in Little Switzerland, but don’t recall eating there. May have, we kicked around in the hills a lot in the past.
When (pray god) I have my new to me car, I’m planning to spend some quality time in that part of the world. Am a major sissy about steep inclines though, lots of places up there I won’t drive on my own.
Oh, bring it! I saw the tiniest haricots verts in France that I could not buy or cook, but just loved. What a total veg nerd. Do love wine, but love the veg more.
Hey CT you were right on at SUIN’s post today. Had not thought about the palestinian hardships since the white phosphorus attacks
.
Like the US Army putting Native Americans in concenrearion camps…excuse me reservations.
Isn’t it cool how tunes and food and our relations to them bind us? The Late Late Night Threads really often bring these things out. I think it’s great.
Pretty Amazing! Where is Petro tonight! Just had a nice meditation. Getting theChakras balanced up and a little close to samadhi. Wished all us Earth creatures well. And love to those that I have special place for in my soul.
Wipes away all the negative and gets the healing energy flowing. Let’s all meditate for peace inside and out
I call Sarah Palin ALMA GANTRY. She realizes what she’s doing and unless she accidently spouts it through a microphone and loudspeaker, like Elmer Gantry did in the movie THE LAST HURRAH, she will continue this scam she plays on America.
People need to ridicule her and use heavy sarcasm and shame her supporters who appear the modern version of the know nothings who accuse others of acting elitist.
If caring about the less fortunate, which she does not, appears an elitist then call me an elitist.
She continues to attempt to shift blame away from corporations and their underpaying and union busting policies and towards the poor and the disabled and the elderly and the taxes that help these less fortunate.
If the rabble that follows her would realize that their cheap labor employers put them in this position and the poor, and the less fortunate do not threaten them she would lose her base.
However she appears a clever deceitful woman who continues the myth that her elitist corporate friends are pissing all over her supporters and she tells them that it’s raining high taxes.
On my mind tonight; My little brother [51] died somewhere between tonight and tomorrow…it’s so plurry in international time zones. He was the immigrant in the family that went BACK to Finland as a young man. Much to his mother’s and aunts’ fear and pride. He had the finest healthcare, with a focus on the seriousness of his conditon and the need to rest, even while in ICU.
We need to rethink what we are willing to compromise on with Healthcare. It is so different experiencing a HEALTHY health care community than reading about it. Fuck. It makes me sob in gratitude for all the quiet time the Finnish Health Care Providers had to actually provide health care.
In terms of Health Care in an Advanced Society…..we’re kind of like the English guys in Shogun. Barbarians, actually. There is no reason the United States of America can’t have the same community driven, socialized healthcare that focuses on neighborhoods and community. It creates jobs if you throw the fucking Insurance Slime out of the Equation.
Maybe we should have a Group Hunch Poll. Tell me what I should think now that there’s inklings the 2009 Health Reform Package coming down the American Pipeline is pure shit, I’m so confused. I think Kill The Bill, again, swung around on this bill because they were planning on throwing Womens Rights under the bus. That’s not a compromise issue. That’s a Fighting Thing. Another non- issue in Finland, Socialist Democracy.
Fuck, sometimes I just can’t believe we’re going to be strangled on our National inability to honor Common Sense and Common Community Health.
Hiya, ES!
Very nice!
Aloha, ES…! NDFG…! ;-)
Good Evening All!
Just finished watching “The People Speak” — the Howard Zinn piece on the History Channel. Wow. I guess fighting the good fight is non-ending. I wept.

For those of ya who don’t pick or know music, those three cats are doin major justice to the Key Of G.

Nice pick ES! Woot!!!!!! *G*
Better, probably, on CD — the ads were annoying. But it was moving. How do we slap the crap out of the greedy overlords? And Matt Damon grew up next door to Howard Zinn….no wonder Damon seems like a good guy.

I’ve been dousing the fruitcake with Famous Grouse, it is smelling oh, so lovely. Baked chocolate bottom coconut squares and made melted Bissingers chocolate bark with cranberries and toasted almonds today, and that is THAT. I’m done.

Your fan club I presume, larue…! *g*
i’m so sorry to hear about your head injury! Don’t worry, i’m sure you’ll come to your senses sooner or later and stop liking that sorry-ass team. I’m sure bret will totally blow it at a crucial moment. Counting on it in fact.

NOM! Thanks, grrrllllfriend, just copied that one into my recipe folder.
Last time I checked, and we visited all those years ago, the price tag to visit was steep. Yikes, good thing MrCE and I have a membership in ICOM and AAM (International Commission of Museums, American Association of Museums).
industrial quantities of bourbon balls were fabricated chez nous today.
OK, you old kitchen horse, here’s me duck for the peeps showing up on christmas eve:
One Nice Duck. I asked Oliver’s (my local cool butcher) to get me a 7 pounder; it’s on the way .

Sides?
I shall now presume I must taunt YOU!
Taunt!
Tiger’s motto.
Ginger bread at Casa de la Eureka today. (Absolutely no gingerbread houses will be constructed*s*)
Chris, I’ve been in Little Switzerland, but don’t recall eating there. May have, we kicked around in the hills a lot in the past.
When (pray god) I have my new to me car, I’m planning to spend some quality time in that part of the world. Am a major sissy about steep inclines though, lots of places up there I won’t drive on my own.
plum jelly, eh…? That’s a new one on me…! Sounds good tho… ;-0
If by sides you mean wine, I’m shopping for the St. Emmillions.
If you mean veggies, we’re countering green beans/haricots verts to asparagus.
And also with duck, I say rice, contra potato.
There are a multitidue of things to do elsewise, to which I say Bring It.
My favorite gingerbread is a Silver Palate recipe — in a 9 inch square pan. The very best! Trader Joe has a 3 ginger cookie that is just super tasty.
Not as fast as I might be, but good enough.. It’s opened whole new vistas and I love your choices :)
We only went DOWN, and braked the whole way. I’m with you about avoiding inclines…
Alrighty.
Oh, bring it! I saw the tiniest haricots verts in France that I could not buy or cook, but just loved. What a total veg nerd. Do love wine, but love the veg more.
You are so clever! Congrats on being finished. Time to start thinking about taxes. ***G***
Isn’t that so? There’s those crazy little white asparagus. I’d like those too.
And roasting cauliflower! Hello! That is a great way to eat the cauli. Little salt and pepper and roasting them. Hmmm.
Hey CT you were right on at SUIN’s post today. Had not thought about the palestinian hardships since the white phosphorus attacks
.
Like the US Army putting Native Americans in concenrearion camps…excuse me reservations.
Add a little curry powder and olive oil, mmmm
Gifts to friends?
Time for my meds…itations that is Time to meditate for all the peeps in distress. Stay strong bonne nuit.
And I have NOT had my annual choucroute garnie party this year. I’ll do it in February 2010, and have a Gewurzstraminer tasting, too!
Just an offhand remark –
Isn’t it cool how tunes and food and our relations to them bind us? The Late Late Night Threads really often bring these things out. I think it’s great.
So what the hell else you want to know?
What time is dinner? and What’s your address?
Go sister! Hey Kelly!
yep, along with things like homemade jam
I’d love to stay, but working for a living calls me to night. A better tomorrow all.
*waving at SunnyNobility*
When you get closer to Denver, I’ll share my address. :)
group hug…)
Speaking of which, Wednesday is a special day.
I’ll have several people (I think it’s 4 now) over, and we’ll be calling/phonebanking against the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.
Looking forward to your support!
It is indeed *very* pricey. I’ve not been inside the house since they started up a winery and opened a hotel on the premises.
Historically, the grounds have been open to all. Hope that’s still true. Even with that, it’s hard to imagine how the place could be self-sufficient.
Out; to steal ratfood’s line, splendid evening to you all.
evening, firepups
Evening PPDCUS.
Fraid you may be the last pup standing. I’m out too.. :(
Me too dawgs… nite all.

Just got back from seeing The Slits! They were great here in LA! If you are in NYC definitely worth checking out…that’s where they are going next.
On another note…is it wrong to spit on our heroic drones? Now I hear they are targeting Pakistani CITIES!!! Typical drone gets the typical boy.
