It is apparently impossible to fail so profoundly that it disqualifies you from ever being listened to again.
Great job Jane!
“Mistook a glorified Iraqi Port-o-Potty”…nice!
Thanks for being out there, Jane.
Good Stuff Jane!
Mad props from Central Kansas. atta way to stick it to him
=]]
It’s definately impossible for a Republic.
great stuff jane, I hope I get to hear you throw one of these in next time you get a cheney chance on teevee
They are only listened to if we hear them.
So much for Obama listening to Juan Cole’s “light footprint” perspective.
Thanks Jane for being a voice of wisdom.
Saw you in real time Jane. Good work.
My favorite is your jab to the wingnut on health care the other day, saying instead of starting over, perhaps he should have started when everyone else did. Brilliant.
Jane, you have a way of so nicely slipping the knife in and I really like it. You do make us proud. The port-a-potty remark was just too good.
You were great as usual. And you turn a good phrase.
Hope you get more opportunities. I’m somewhat surprised that they have the nerve to allow you on at all.
Can you offer a comment on why as to why Marcy “BJ” Wheeler is not invited on programs like RMS? Are they afraid that she will “blurt out the truth like a prophet with Tourette’s Syndrome.” ??
Great work Jane. Thanks for what you are doing and there is no one better at it. How great it is that FDL has become a real force to reckon with in a few short years.
perhaps he should have started when everyone else did.
Left the evil Ken Doll grasping for air, that one did.
The truth is that I get asked on because I live 5 min from the studio. Marcy has to go from Ann Arbor to Detroit to say “BJ.”
get back to class!
You know it will not be long before we see porta potty graphics on MSN and porta potty skits on Sewart or Colbert or SNL
You KNOW it’s coming.
tee hee hee
Your early morning fresh face and sharp wit impress me doubly given the enervating late-night festivities on this blog….
About which I will only say that if the event you allude to at comment 254 involves some manner of whip effort to preserve state single-payer language, you can count on my support. This is an area where the established single payer groups, as I’ve argued elsewhere, have not displayed sufficient tactical skill.
This despite the fact that I was otherwise rooting for the cultic nihilists.
Nice to see slate.com’s rep advancing the line that if we don’t do this the Taliban are going to take over and it’s gonna be a sanctuary for al-Qaeda again.
I’ve got news for him: after we lose a couple of thousand Marines and soldiers with the obligatory Navy corpsmen attached to the Marines dying also, we will be leaving, and the Talibam will move in and you know what’ll happen then? They will have to fight off the warlords and drug lords who will try to get back control of the territory we occupied for awhile.
This isn’t rocket science. McGeorge Bundy when ruminating on how we escalated so quickly in Vietnam against all the intelligence and war games from the Pentagon and CIA that showed we couldn’t prevail said that the main thing we had to do was just give it a good effort. The North Vietnamese for their part said that the more bombs we dropped on their country the stronger their resolve became because they couldn’t show their faces to the people if they gave up after so many people had fought to defend THEIR country. And there it is in a nutshell: IT’S THEIR FUCKING COUNTRY AND WE ARE THE INVADERS.
Get out now and if he doesn’t I’m all for impeachment hearings into the extension of the AUMF to cover every single eventuality. How about Congress taking back some goddamn constitutional perogatives and forcing this to come before the people or cut off the goddamn funds.
Fuck hiding behind “Support the troops” in order to get more of them killed. Only in the Pentagon does the equation more troops on the ground=less numbers of troops dying. That kind of math just doesn’t make sense.
You Jane…me Impressed, as always.
There must be some studio on UMich campus that Marcy could use if the appropriate connections were made.
Yeah, that was an insta-classic. *snicker*
I heard KO’s mention of FDL last night, too. The Lake and Jane are all over the toobz these days. Hurrah!!
Wow. That says everything that needs to be said about the media.
Pat Buchanan must live in a broom closet at MSNBC.
That seems to be the general conclusion of the influence of bombing campaigns–the opposite to the intended outcome. WWII was certainly a good example of that, and many others that could be cited.
But you know the AF offers an irresistible proposition: if you only give me better planes and more accurate bombs, surely this time we’ll win. And since the U.S. always has such great air superiority, the political chumps get roped in every time because it seems to be a way of waging wars without casualties. Drones only make it worse, because there isn’t even a pilot at risk.
I loved how she sped up to squeeze in the Cheney dig. I think Jane might have a sideline as an auctioneer. :)
Freudian slip?
Thanks. that kinda makes sense.
I like seeing all of the FDL crew get teevee time. I am encouraged that the FDL has seeped into MSM and has become a force to be reckoned with.
This is the second blog I ever read, being directed here by Eric Alterman’s Altercation very early on. Been an avid, mostly lurker ever since.
It is also encouraging to see the evolution and maturation of the FDL phenomena.
Please keep blurting and I’ll keep lurkin’. And sending your posts to everyone I know.
Still think MSM is afraid.
Don’t just lurk. Jump right in.
Thank you Jane. Beautiful job, as always. I hope you can hear the whoots and cheers from here ;->
Juan Cole seems to have access to that studio when he makes NewsHour appearances.
The generals to Obama: Trust us.
Obama to the rest of us: Trust me too.
Unfortunately, going all the back to Korea, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of men, women and children put their trust in this war mongering, military industrial complex bullshit.
And they’re just the ones who never lived to tell about it.
Or to paraphrase Country Joe McDonald:
Come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He’s got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Afghanistan
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We’re gonna have a whole lotta fun….
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Afganistan.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die….
Well, come on generals, let’s move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get the towelheads—
The only good A-rab is the one who’s dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we’ve blown ‘em all to kingdom come…
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Afganistan.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die….
So, come on Wall Street, don’t move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There’s plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
The predators don’t get it wrong….
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Afganistan.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die….
Yes, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Afghanistan.
Come on fathers, don’t hesitate,
Send ‘em off before it’s too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box….
And it’s one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Afganistan.
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die….
george:
Only not many folks in the Obama administration, the Congress, Fox News and talk radio are going to actually know someone who does in fact die, will they?
Jane, I just saw this pop up in another browser window and clicked on over to FDL to shout-out “WOOT!!!!!!!!”
(I’m a huge fan of MM; what they are doing in explaining the linkages between finance and government is extremely important IMHO, and the conversations stay well-focused. Really heartening to see you on MM!)
Bravo Jane!!! You are absoooooolutely TERRIFIC, as usual!
mattcarmodyat #17
Impeachment for sure!!
(did I hear Dylan say FIRELAKEDOG? whadda asswipe)
Well done, Jane!
Dick’s failure was profound indeed. And yet the neocons can still count on him to lead their charge against starting unnecessary wars of choice, against planning before sending troops into harm’s way, against reason itself.
There’s another jab at Dick Cheney here:
Maybe it’s time for Marcy to settle in for a long “vacation” [and concurrent media availability] at your house.
DC winters are far gentler than MI’s, although the ice fishing’s not as good.
Cheney 2012 has a very good chance in winning a Karzai style election…why not? he’s done it before.
Any bets that Obama’s speech tonight is a rehash of all the shit we heard the first time around?
Afghanistan is Dari for Viet Nam.
I remember all the white people up in the Ventura Hills back in ’79 & ’80
who’d voted Reagan in for Governator of California starting to sell realestate and moving into the upper class like Roni R. It was all “make Islamic Atomic” etc for the solution to the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Things
still haven’t changed enough yet for those armchair warriors like Dick (Rumsfeld’s personal assistant in early Nixon administration)Cheney/Bush to stop barking about peace activists like Jane Fonda etc I bet Dick used to listen to first hand ‘Teapot Dome’ stories out there in Wyoming growing
up under big oil money tutelage.
Cheney — Porta Potty — potty mouth. There’s definitely a theme with this guy.
Eliot Spitzer and other chicken hawks seem to be masters of the false dichotomy. The alternative to doing what Obama is doing is letting the Taliban take over, he says. With putzes like this running foreign policy, it’s no wonder things are so screwed up.
It is always fascinating where the questioner seems to begin his line of inquiry when speaking of US military presence in other countries.
The logical first question should be why are you setting foot there? Do you have a legal justification for violating that countries soverein land?
That part seems to be omitted as if the US has an inherent right to invade who it likes without cause. If that question was put to Obama he would have no answer. Initially hot pursuit of OBL may have beem imposed as an answer, but 8 years of hot pursuit is not credible.
Neither is any agreement the Karzai government may have granted the US or NATO to be present there because we do not know those terms. We don’t know if the terms allow for the US to unilaterally increase troop strength at will or to act indepndently as it pleases. Killing people within their country at will. We don’t know any of that.
No country will just grant an outside military presence an open ended commitment. Again the absolute diregard for the sovereignty of other countries is what engenders the hatred toward the US which feeds this never ending cycle of warding off outside threats to this country.
Nope, sadly we’ll have to do it without you.
Good luck to you, though.
The good news is that even the Republicans acknowledge that Cheney’s views are not theirs. Yet, this weasel continues to speak as if he has some cred remaining and his clone of a daughter is out repeating his utterly discredited views. History will not be kind to this man and he knows it.
Well, then good luck with the … thing, whatever it is.
I’d like to know just how badly Mz. Wheeler is ‘blackballed’ (and I think she is but like the elephant in the room, no one wants to talk about it) from MSM after SAYING blowjob. It was a no no, a major fox paw and a cheap reason for the MSM to keep her off air and keep her progressive and threatening ideas and ideals off air as well.
Remember, the MSM in all forms is corporate owned and controlled and used to FURTHER corporate interests, not to enlighten the masses.
Aside from losing our investments in trying to gain ground in controlling the gas, oil and distribution routes of AFPak, and Central Asia, and the Middle East, (and to keep China/Russia from getting them) what do we LOSE by leaving AfPak or Iraq?
Nothing.
Those countries are, and never will be, any threat to the US Mainland.
Al Queda is NOT well loved by the Talibani, which in itself is a LOOSELY confederated grouping of hundreds if not thousands of tribal and ethnic groups under a general and loosely interpreted version(s) of Islam.
Al Queda (small as it is) does not have a country of origin. As long as Al Queda attacks civilian populations of ANY ethnic or religious origin in Central Asia or Middle East, they make enemies of other Muslim’s. Al Queda can’t grow or prosper or threaten unless we are IN Iraq/AF-Pak, etc. Our presence only adds to the jihadist mindset and unifies what are elements who are opposed to each other in the first place!
So ANY fucking discussion of if we pull out, ‘they win’ and will somehow be a THREAT to USA mainland is not only wrong, it’s insane.
We are there for the resources, and only the might of our country’s masses in the streets in the MILLIONS on a regular basis will get us out of there. Maybe.
This is big business at work, and it’s not going to stop until the masses publicly display their discontentment.
Upon reflection of my #44 regarding Mz. Wheeler, I concur, proximity (or simple availability in the studio) as Mz. Hamsher points out is a HUGE determinant in booking guests.
That said, shows and producers keep lists of many guests on many topics, and I STILL wonder/posit if Mz. Wheeler has been culled from those lists do to saying a ‘forbidden’ word.
That’s my GUESS, perhaps others with more recent and direct experience with the MSM could offer their thoughts on the topic . . . . for instance, do they call you or does one get a guest slot by OFFERING to be a guest? Or both? But there’s a RELATIONSHIP that’s cultivated there . . . and ‘blowjob’ is verboten.
