A study by George Washington University represents a huge repudiation of the “we’re just following current law” talking point that Stupak has been peddling. According to these experts, it’s bogus. The Stupak amendment would represent the biggest barrier to abortion services since the passage of Roe v. Wade, without question.

In Exclusive Interview, Matthew Hoh Says Escalation in Afghanistan a “Terrible Way to Prove a Point” |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 17, 2009 1:49 pm |
Matthew Hoh sounds more like a professor of Asian history than anything. “The British and Russian occupations of Afghanistan were based on irrational fear and regional politics. The British thought Afghanistan could be a buffer state between Russia and India, when Russia had no designs on India whatsoever at that time. We’re making some of [...]
Fox’s New Friend Stupak Says He’ll Take Down Health Bill over His Amendment |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 17, 2009 12:50 pm |
There’s a huge difference between 10 and 20. In fact, only nine members who said they would vote down the bill without the Stupak amendment ended up voting for final passage. The rest of those members voted against the bill anyway. So 10 is probably the real number, as confirmed by James Clyburn last week. Chris Bowers has a target list for how to find those 8-10 votes if Stupak is stripped. And it’s not at all clear that they could not be found. In fact, before the vote, Stupak HIMSELF said that health care would pass whether his amendment passed or not. And the votes don’t look to be there in the Senate.
Dick Durbin: List Building off the Public Option for Fun and Profit! |
| By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday November 17, 2009 11:50 am |
Are Dick Durbin and Harry Reid really so slimy that they think it’s okay to get people ginned up about something they’re getting ready to ditch? They think one of those patented “for the greater good” speeches will help them skate over the giant chasm between what they’re saying and what they’re actually doing?

Mass Transit-Oriented Smart Growth Melds Environmental, Labor Interests |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday November 17, 2009 9:40 am |
Recently there has been a lot of focus on a possible “blue/green alliance” among the political left in this country. The idea is that union workers would build the new equipment for the green economy. Things like solar panels and wind turbines. Clearly the idea appeals to those who long for the glory days of organized labor, when this country was still a manufacturing powerhouse.
Unfortunately, as long as this country maintains its strong anti-manufacturing policies, I don’t see the blue/green alliance manifesting itself in that way. I suspect the nation’s demand for solar panels will be met by imports from Germany, and our wind turbines will be made in China. There is no reason to believe this green manufacturing jobs will not suffer the same fate as previous manufacturing jobs.
New Mammography Guidelines Could Have Implications for Health Care Bill |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 17, 2009 8:50 am |
If the House version prevails in the final bill, it’s likely that women who opt for breast cancer screening at age 40, or who seek a mammography every year as opposed to every two years, would have to spend a good deal of money in co-pays for the service. And there’s at least a chance it wouldn’t be covered at all in those cases.
Costs of Iraq, Afghanistan Wars Proving Unsustainable |
| By: Jim White Tuesday November 17, 2009 7:55 am |
Fighting two wars under the dual myths of an all-volunteer force and a refusal to raise taxes to fund the conflicts is destroying our armed forces, our economy and the fabric of our society.
