Jon Meacham is reliably vapid, but this is a new low, even for him.
I think we should be taking the possibility of a Dick Cheney bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 more seriously, for a run would be good for the Republicans and good for the country. [...] Why? Because Cheney is a man of conviction, has a record on which he can be judged, and whatever the result, there could be no ambiguity about the will of the people.
Cheney was judged — in 2006 and 2008. His favored policies (preemptive war, “deficits don’t matter”) have failed and been repudiated in spectacular fashion. As a result, he is one of the most unpopular vice presidents in history and his reeling party is at all-time lows. Where’s the ambiguity?
A contest between Dick Cheney and Barack Obama would offer us a bracing referendum on competing visions.
Is Meacham actually suggesting that there are no policy differences between McCain and Obama? Really? Then why isn’t McCain supporting Obama’s agenda? And while Obama has been a disappointment to progressives, the idea that McCain and Cheney are vastly different is absurd.
One of the problems with governance since the election of Bill Clinton has been the resolute refusal of the opposition party (the GOP from 1993 to 2001, the Democrats from 2001 to 2009, and now the GOP again in the Obama years) to concede that the president, by virtue of his victory, has a mandate to take the country in a given direction. A Cheney victory would mean that America preferred a vigorous unilateralism to President Obama’s unapologetic multilateralism, and vice versa.
But Bush did not have a mandate – he lost the popular vote in 2000, and won a single-state victory in 2004. And despite that, I would really like to know how the Democrats “refusal” to allow Bush to enact his agenda manifested itself.
Despite holding the Senate, Democrats passed Bush’s tax cuts and later gave him his war in Iraq. No Child Left Behind, the Medicare bill, the war supplementals — whatever Bush wanted, Bush got. It took Katrina and the unfolding disaster in Iraq to prevent him from reforming destroying Social Security.
Meanwhile, the GOP has party-line rejected Obama’s first two big initiatives, the stimulus and health care reform — even though he won a larger percentage of the popular vote than Ronald Reagan in 1980.
And I’d still like to know the difference between McCain’s foreign policy and Dick Cheney’s. And really — is Obama’s that different from Cheney’s at this point? Surge in Afghanistan, check. Troops still in Iraq, check. $700B in defense spending, check. Gitmo still open, check.
The difference Meacham is fetishizing is apparently about tone and symbolism, i.e., Cheney would say meaner things about Iran, wouldn’t bow to the Japanese Emperor and would be “tough” — unlike that sissy Obama who has launched more Predator attacks in 9 months than his predecessor did in 8 years.
I don’t think we need a third election to determine whether the American people have had enough of the Bush/Cheney administration, but I would be thrilled if Meacham got his way.

Same can be said of Charles Manson.
Meacham has destroyed a once great magazine. Can’t stand reading his pap in “Time” anymore. Anyhow, run, Dick, run!
PLLLEEEEEEZZZZZ let him run for President….could pick Palin as VP. I think Meacham is absolutely right we do need to see the choice in those vivid terms. It would end the Neo Con movement forever and lay waste to the theocrats. What fun…Cheney and his lesbian daughter on a ticket with another “christian” ..a charismatic this time…tongue speaking and all…what a hoot. Come on…let cross our fingers.
If Cheney runs will some of the other hopefuls step aside? They are all so pathetic. I can’t see all of them going up against He Who Must Be Obeyed.
Jon Meacham makes Joke LIne look like a well considered and thoughtful reporter
The core problem for Bush and Cheney, from Day 1, was their lack of mandate.
BushCheney always sought to claim a ‘mandate’, but that one, single SCOTUS ‘victory’ was always destined to be Pyrrhic.
Bush was freed from his hamstrung situation by 9-11.
But suspicions about his lack of mandate always haunted him.
Then, his OVP’s top aide outed a CIA agent.
Whom Bush later pardoned.
Compare the election night confusion of Nov 2000… through mid-Dec 2000, with the images of Obama-Biden’s blow-out win in 2008.
Also, compare the complete absence of joyous crowds on election night 2004, to say nothing of both 2000 and 2004 inaugural events, against the imagery of millions of people on the Mall in Jan 2008.
Maybe Meachum is simply drumming up pseudo-conflict to push magazine sales…?
If Cheney would like to put Scooter Libby’s lies to the FBI, his presidential pardon, and his wars and profiteering up against the Dems, I say: game on!
Provided that it require Dick to swear on a Bible to tell, ‘the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth’ to the FBI. Not that he’d know what those words mean…
A frightening prospect without addressing the potential for election fraud, per the HAVA, under the aegis of Diebold’s new ES&S subsidiary.
I hope Cheney is arrested before we ever have to listen to that ass make an announcement like that.
All the people touting Cheney are really blowing smoke out of their ass. I don’t think he has the physical stamina for a presidential campaign, even if he wanted to, which I doubt. Having said that, I would welcome his nomination. I can’t think of anyone who would reinvigorate a disillusioned Democratic base faster.
Please, would everyone STOP referring to the probable increase in troops for Afganistan as a SURGE — it is a 50% ESCALATION, pure and simple.
Meacham is doing like he always does.
Float a trial baloon on behalf of the Cheney family.
He probably discussed it with Charlie Rose first. They were able to achieve a meeting of the mindless.
The core problem of the Bush-Cheney administration from the beginning is that their mandate extended only to five Supreme Court justices.
The core problem after 9/11 is that they treated Osama bin Laden’s attack as if it were a mandate–even for domestic policy (“They hates our freedoms.”)
And they got away with because media shills like Meacham spun the story of a mandate and rode that narrative for eight full years.
There is no compromising with the assholes.
Because Cheney is a man of
conviction, that will be convictedhas a record on which he can be judged, and will have a criminal record. There Jon, fixed it for you.
They acted as if they had a mandate when they didn’t. In ’06 and ’07 Dems were given a mandate and squandered it. They could learn a thing or two from the opposition.
hahaha!
Meacham is a fucking rube. Yes Jon Meacham, you sir are a rube. Easily led, believe in magical thinking, bow and scrape to your betters for scraps: A Rube, born and bred.

IntoleranceFaith is an embarrassment even for the Post,so I think I’ll throw my lot in with Liz’a crazy dad.
from Blue Texan’s link:
words fucking fail.
My sentiments exactly. And with any luck, Vice will have another heart attack during the campaign.
Cheney is like malaria – it never quite goes away. His appearances, however, are rare now. I guess he’s letting Liz take the lead. I have the feeling that he is always there though like a spider sitting in the middle of the web.
Well, we could just skip the prez and go straight to the library, built in the shape of a man-size safe for all those documents.
It’s fairly obvious that W doesn’t need a library – he never saw any of the papers anyway. Cheney still has the ones he didn’t shred or burn so I say Cheney gets the library. No one will ever be able to go inside because of national security. s/
I think he’s looking to be VP again under Sarah Palin. She’s dumber than Decider Bush so Cheney should have even more fun in office.
Well, OK, as long as Vice will allow multiple copies of My Pet Goat.
My thoughts exactly. Palin-Cheney ’12. The Armageddon Ticket. Look upon them and tremble.
Such an embarrassment of riches the Rs have.
Uh, yeah. Do they really want more salt in that wound??
I wonder if he would rule from a wheelchair.
Palin Cheney vs. Dobbs-Tancredo vs. Beck-Bachmann. Yep. That’ll work.
this is not about what you think it is about. What it is really about, is making us think that Obama is some kind of leftist revolutionary, while the reality is that he’s just a member of the same kakatocracy, well right of center.
From a wheelchair in a secure, undisclosed location.
I spoke too soon.

You’re not being very generous, ROTL; they’re all guilty of ‘Valerie Plame treason’ – even the “President”. After all, he was the one who said that the guilty parties would be punished.
A real man, a real American, a real patriot and a real President would have cleaned house immediately – if only to distance himself from the traitors. Seeing as how he never came through on his promise, he’ll be linked to that conspiracy til the end of time.
It would be interesting. Like watching two scorpions fighting. As long as you aren’t in their way ….
Jon Meacham: Look at MEEEEE! Click on MYYYYYY article! Talk about MEEEEE!
Just attention-whoring, pure and simple. It’ll never happen, and no sane person wants it to. But he got his wish. Lotsa us libs all over it today.
Cheney is channeling all his resources now into a run for the presidency of Afghanistan in 2014. He wants to send Osama bin Laden amessage: I’m coming for you!!!
At last, you might say.
A Vice in the wilderness.
Newsweek has gone from a decent magazine to a mere pamphlet in the last few years with lazy pundits that are poor excuses for journalism. If the margins continue to expand and the type continues to enlarge as the pages dwindle, soon it will be like a childrens periodical.
OOPs, that should been directed at @31.
Book Salon a couple of flights upstairs with Helen Thomas and Craig Crawford’s Listen Up Mr President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do hosted by Jeffrey Feldman
Cheney should run alright, ’cause if he stopped, that brickbat that’s been following his head may connect.
Yeah, John Meachan is a dick for sure. But please let Dick Cheney run in 2012, please let that heartless vampire be the republican nominee in 2012.
Not sure if I like the idea that a presidential election serves as a “mandate”. That’s like saying that the people who did NOT vote for a given president in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, or whenever, should NOT have a voice in the government!
If we say that we have a “mandate” right now, what’s going to stop the conservative evangelical pro-war base of the GOP from saying that they have a “mandate” the next time a GOP president is elected, and then follow up with a third war on Iran???
Mandate = majority mob rule :(.
Hell yes…Cheney/Palin ’12 all the way!
I can see the yard signs now: “DICK SARAH IN 2012″
More like Cheney Addington ’12
