The Day is Gone…But, it Doesn’t Have to Be Over
Good Morning Pups! Well, we made it through another Thanksgiving Day and I don’t know about you, but I need to hit the gym! I went to church Thursday morning, and then Rashad and I hit the road for our two and a half hour trip to Hampton, VA to be with my family. Oh, what a feast they had prepared!
The food was delicious, but it was just nice being around family and friends and just enjoying time with one another. And, guess what….I didn’t take my laptop out once! I did check a few emails from my phone, but that doesn’t really count, does it?
How was everybody’s Thanksgiving…any highlights?
Now that the actual holiday is over, the sentiment or traditions don’t have to be. To me, every day is a day of Thanksgiving. As I am getting older, I am learning to give thanks daily for what is most important to me. The other night on Facebook, I posted my status as “So thankful for Love, Peace and Happiness”. Don’t wait until next year to enjoy your family or friends…or eat that extra piece of pie, LOL. Take a moment every time you think about it and just be thankful.
Not only can the traditions live on, the food stays around for a while too. Thanksgiving leftovers are really the only leftovers that I like. I think my family has come up with every use of the turkey afterwards there can be…turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, turkey soup, and my favorite…turkey hash over rice!
What are some of your favorite creations for all of that leftover food from Thursday? Let’s share.
Pull Up A Chair…

About Firedoglake
We spent the day driving back to Georgia from the “Emerald Coast” of Florida with a cooler full of fish!
Turkey Gumbo is the best. Take that old carcass, brown the bones in the oven and make stock. Make your roux and fire up a big pot!
looks like we are up early today.
Morning, DeVeria, did you tell Hampton High hello for me?
Got some turkey into my laid-up mom, and some into me; the pumpkin pie from scratch absolutely made the day for me really.
Stayed out of the stores yesterday, too. A good holiday in so many ways.
Mmm sounds good!
Good morning DeVeria!
Sounds like you had a delightful Thanksgiving.
For me leftovers start with the turkey sandwich.
My father became a turkey soup maker so the extended family would spend the rest of the weekend waiting and waiting for the soup. Became a key ritual for the holidays.
Good morning Ruth. Rashad and I are still in Hampton and we didn’t do any shopping yesterday either. Just taking a much needed break and spending some time with family.
Will drive thru GA on my way to visit friends in FL, at Canaveral, about Dec. 19th. Hope you’ll keep it warm until then, please.
Turkey Tetrazzini (sp) is good too!
Yes, it has been a good holiday. I have already started with the turkey sandwiches and now I’m waiting on my turkey hash over rice. I guess I need to remind them that I’m leaving in the morning.
Ah, the East Coast. We were as far away as you could be and still be in the state. The Panhandle is really a different world.
How do you make that?
Nice, will you be going touristing at all? As I told you, I used to love visiting the old Fort Monroe, seeing the ships off in Hampton Roads.
Love the white sand in Panama City. My bro worked in the Naval research station there, I visited a couple of times.
My dad was big on turkey hash after all the eating and sandwiches were done.
Edit: Of course, most anything became hash for Dub when it hit the 3rd or 4th day after initial serving.
No, I’m just taking it easy. And, it’s cold and brisk so I’m trying not to keep Rashad out in the air.
Turkey, dressing and cranberry jelly sandwich. First experienced as a hogie. And I don’t even like cranberry any other way.
Exactly! They ae going to fix my hash early.
Wednesday’s NYT dining section had two delicious sounding recipes for turkey leftovers. Here’s the crepes, and here’s the curry.
I bought & carted the turkey (22 pound organic, best I’ve ever had) to my in-laws. Brought home enough for two meals, but not enough to make one of the recipes. Next year, I’m buying the same size turkey and having it all to myself, so I can cook up a whole pile of leftovers.
My aunt made some type of cranberry jelled substance with walnuts in it that was delicious. I don’t do cranberry sauce either.
Pro’ly a good plan. Enjoy family things, and all this turkey talk is making me hungry for breakfast.
bbl
little to no leftovers is the real downside of going to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving :(
Oh you should always have your own turkey, if for no other reason than the leftovers. They are my favorite part of the turkey. I don’t eat too much with dinner.
You betcha.
I sometimes buy a turkey breast at the supermarket because I like it so much. But the organic one I bought for T-day is available only once/year.
Good morning everyone. My fave is the day after Thanksgiving. Those closest to me come over for all the leftovers (eaten off paper plates). No fuss, no big mess…..and it taste’s better.
This is cheating but he’s good
Emeril
Basically it’s a white sauce with cheese, turkey and pasta.
Try this cranberry relish. It is delicious and really fairly simple as stated. It’s what we always had for T’giving and Christmas growing up (even down to preparing with the old fashioned meat grinder).
Yea and the blue water is awesome.
We all had dinner at my son’s girlfriend’s house — she is a gourmet cook. I brought a free range turkey (she cooked it), a pumpkin cheesecake and apple pie. After dinner a lot of miscellaneous stuff went into her big soup pot, just willy-nilly, including stuffing, mashed potatoes, the carcass with skin and meat scraps, a couple of carrots and celery stalks, water, and generous doses of herbs. Simmered all night. When we went back yesterday she served a delicious thick fragrant turkey soup with barley in it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there to observe so I have no idea what else she put in, but it was yummy. I have a container to take home, along with leftover turkey.
And my son-in-law went out for the midnight and 5 a.m. Black Friday specials. He got about half of their shopping done!
Ok, if I’m gonna watch football all day I better get crackin for the princess!
peas ya’ll
It’s always better the day after…
I love pasta…I bet that’s good!
I thought about going shopping and leaving Rashad with my mother, but I just didn’t feel up to it…I need to stop putting it off though.
Did I mention that I’m going to NOLA next week. It’s been a goal for a few years and I’m finally going to get there. Might try one of Emeril’s restaurants.
It was cold and wet here in Indianapolis, but he went out anyway and stood in line for a couple of hours. Went to Toys R Us and Old Navy. Bailed out at Best Buy because he said there must have been several hundred people waiting. He’s a good man — I wouldn’t have done it for nuttin!
Well, enjoy….On business? Tour? Enjoy. I was there in Oct. I thought it was all such a mixed picture on improvements since the storm. Have a great time.
100% pleasure.
Happy Post Thanksgiving Everyone
We’re back from camping at Pismo Beach. No leftovers. At all. At the last minute, my 22 year old son let me know that he and 3 friends would be joining us after all. I spent nearly all of Thursday putting out food and cooking. We did the turkey here before we left, but made all the sides from scratch at the camping site. It was awesome.
Well, about 2:30 am here Thursday night it stated thundering, lightening, and hailing…by the time my brother left for work about 3 am, there was a coating of snow or ice on the ground and cars…it was unreal.
Then enjoy a 100%; I will welcome your stories..
Now that sounds fun…but no leftovers.
Is it your tradition to go camping? Sounds like you had a great time.
Welcome back; glad it was such fun….And I have new Ginger beer from my local source. Such pleasure.
!!
Not this time. I even had to resort to the cream of chicken soup with rolls for breakfast. Those guys can really polish off a meal!
It’s becoming one. This is our third time. It was my sort of sneaky way of avoiding family unpleasantness. *g*
sounds like it!
You would not believe the humoungous amount of beer those 4 young men drank. When we cleaned up the site before we left, I was still find bottle caps. Ha.
Good Morning, DeVeria! Family decided to go out to a restaurant for T-giving that had a smoking section, which I’m allergic to, so no turkey and gravy for me. And no leftovers. (sigh)
But I got to eat Turkey Manhattan yesterday, so all is right with the world. :)
Oh the weather here has been unreal. Yesterday when I was taking Rashad to see my grandmother it started pouring down rain, but I could see the sun through the clouds not too far away. By the time I got to where I was going…no rain, sun and a few clouds….and, it only took me about 10 minutes to get to where I was going.
Clever lady
I can honestly say I have never been to a restaurant on Thanksgiving. The one year that I remember not coming home, I cooked and my friend and I had a nice quiet dinner at my house.
When my son lived in Navarre, FL he used to hire a guide out of NOLA (actually so. of NOLA) and go fishing out on the gulf. He used to catch enough tuna to pay for the trip.
Yeah, it wouldn’t be my choice, either. There’s just something about smelling the aroma, the bustle in the kitchen, and of course, leftovers.
Once in a while. *g* And, it was so nice to have only great memories to talk about on the long drive home. Not once did I use the b word or say, did you see how she looked at me?
I was pleasantly surprised at how polite and helpful the guys all were. And, imagine that our invitation was the one they all chose to say yes too. I’d met all of my son’s friends before, but I got a chance to get to know them better.
Do you think I can pay for mine if I visit Harrah’s?*g*
Ummmm, we stopped at the Chumash Casino on the way home. After about an hour, we were 30 bucks up, so we left. That paid for one night.
Mornin’, DeVeria, pups
Uneventful Thanxgiver. Just friends, excellent wine, excellent food and great conversation. As conversations among old friends do the subject turned to the “good old days” on the beach and its characters. One of them has written a book about those days. He’s in a bit of heat because of it. While I only met Steve after the heyday most of the folks in the book I’ve known since I moved here. The Sloppy Pelican is the name of the bar that was built on the site of the original Oyster Shucker, a hangout for all these folks for years. Buffet used to come up and play on Sunday afternoons. I lived in a little beach duplex next to the Shucker. Paradise, it was. I can’t find the book at Amazon or B&N but I’ve seen it. Can’t wait to read it.
stopped while you were ahead, huh. Hope I can remember to do that…I’m going to Atlantic City Wed – Fri.
I love AC. Do you venture down to Cape May while you’re there?
Well, it helped that sonnyboy and the dog were in the car waiting for us.
Well good food, wine, friends and conversation sounds like a mighty fine Thanksgiving to me…glad to hear so many enjoyed.
I have never been before…this will be our first time. So, I’m open to all suggestions.
Going to Cape May is the best part of an AC visit. Of course, I’ve only been during the summer months, it would lose something in the winter, but I’d still go.
OTOH, the Victorian houses would all be decorated for Christmas so that would be lovely. I should add that it’s appeal (for me) is the brick paved street filled with shops that’s closed off to traffic. If you don’t enjoy shopping, you may not enjoy it.
Good Morning D !
Had a great Turkey Day .it’s always fun getting together with the family. Ate way too much !
My nephews girlfriend made homemade Whoopie Pies I ate about 8 of them and took several home they were delicious!
Now it’s time to get on the treadmill ,I can’t button my pants anymore .LOL
I’ll have to look it up and see how far it is from where I’m staying. We are at the Trump Marina…have you ever been there?
I love to shop!
Someone snapped your picture
Oh don’t even talk about it. I think I’ve gained everything I had lost. Time to start all over again…after Atlantic City, LOL.
That’s exactly how I felt Thursday night!
If you are fortunate enought to live east of the Mississippi River try taking finely chopped up turkey and mixing with finely chopped up White Castles (without the pickle is what I prefer). Outstanding!
You can eat as is or put it on a bun or bread.
If you’re careful you can do this in a blender but take care not to turn it into a liquid. It probably wouldn’t be the same.
Bon Appétit
I was there in the Fall of ’07. The beach is very nice and if I recall correctly, there’s a nature preserve/state park up the road a bit.
Yup ,that’s about right !
morning pups!
anyone want a wave invite?
Doesn’t take much to tweak my curiosity.
lol :)

I have a relative , who shall remain nameless ,that one time bought a DC3 filled it full of Marijauna and tried to fly it home from the Bahamas. The airplane ran out of fuel and crash landed in a field in Jersey ,still laden with several tons of weed.
The pilot and my relative walked away from the craft unharmed .
Needless to say that was the end of their smuggling days !
Well, I know I won’t be on the beach but I at least wanted a view of the water. I’m going to venture out some because he’s not going to want to stay in the casinos the whole time.
Been to TM, never stayed there. Cape May is about an hour away. If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love it. It’s a little seaside town with pretty Victorian homes, unique shopping and great restaurants. We love it and it’s the main reason we go to AC. (Can’t stay in CM…waaaay too pricey).
Sorry, DeVeria, I don’t know the proximity of the casinos to the beach–I don’t recall seeing them.
It is a gorgeous place.
I love the Shore in the winter months — and the summer too
not a casino goer tho.
I’m off. Everyone enjoy their day. DeVeria, you won’t be sorry if you venture down to CM. You may even become a convert.
Once the local mullet fishermen got involved in unloading there was an almost non-stop influx of Jamaican herb into the beach communities. They’d pick it up at sea from the go-fast boats and bring it in at night, just like loads of mullet. Took the heat a long time to figure it out.
I’ll try to check it out.
See, I love the water but I also love the casinos too!
I’m getting ready to look it up right now.
Off to read…have a great day.
Ahhh! The good old days ! LOL
Yep, I didn’t have to buy herb for the longest time. *g*
you too!
Massachusetts just decriminalized pot .
About 30 years too late to do me any good ! LOL
In the 70s and 80s here ya really had to do something really stupid to get busted for possession. There was weed everywhere. LOL
Pot pies. Turkey, gravy, and veggies between 2 crusts. Yummy.
I bet the reason it was so good was the stuffing. Even when I make a thick half-half/stock based turkey chowder from stratch, I always put stuffing in it. (I take a half bag dry stuffing and run it through the food processor until it is just fine crumbs) It gives it the best seasoned flavor. It also thickens the chowder nicely without having to use much additional thickening ingrediants.
Turkey Gumbo
The main thing the turkey contributes is the stock made out of the carcass (after you’ve picked it as clean of meat as you care to) and vegetabel parings, though whatever meat you have left over after turkey sandwiches, pot pies, etc., will certainly help. Of course this is best if you live where fresh shrimp, crabs and oysters are available, so you can make it a seafood gumbo. But whatever sort of gumbo you make, it needs a poultry base, and turkey holds up better against the more assertive ingredients than chicken, so you can be freer with them.
