Jane Hamsher on NBC Nightly News this evening (at 0:28 mark in this video):
“There’s nothing about being from a conservative district which says you have to sell your soul to Blue Cross in order to be able to win re-election.”
The message here is succinct and to the point. Blue Cross isn’t going to vote for you, Senator; only voters vote. And they are telling their senators loudly and clearly they want a public option.
UPDATE 10:30 p.m. ET — Here’s the report by NBC, the western edition posted after the vote for cloture (we don’t yet have video from NBC directly):
Obviously we still have work to do to firm the spine, I mean, resolve of waverers like Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA).
UPDATE 10:50 p.m. ET — A tip of the hat to commenter Kelly Canfield who shares the polling results on the public option in Arkansas from 3 weeks ago. Perhaps Miss Blanche read these, too?

About Firedoglake
Thank you Jane!!
I find it a little disconcerting to hear truth on network news but way to go Jane.
We’ll probably have a little more video to provide some additional context. It’s kind of nice to see some rather slow learners catch a clue, almost like the proverbial light bulb went off over their heads.
Yeah, it makes me do a double- and triple-take when I hear the truth on any broadcast medium.
It’s rather like a flashback from the 1960′s or something…
Rayne, are you including the Nightly News in that category? ;~)
I would.
Thanks to you for posting, and Jane for making it to the Nightly News, with a most succinct statement.
Me, too! I almost never watch the stuff, but I’ll make an exception here.
Excellent!
thanks Rayne.
I was hoping someone would post this for us non-left-coasters.
funny – I don’t *feel* skittish….
It’s hard to believe that the nightly news actually had someone on who tells the truth. major break through.
Funny you should point that out. Had an instructional moment earlier this evening with my rather-apathetic spouse; he was unaware that GE had purchased NBC years ago in order to promote a particular tax policy. Now that Jack Welch isn’t CEO and Congress is no longer a sure thing, GE is ditching NBC.
Could be why we’ve seen a little more clarity in their news reporting of late, hmmm?
Now if we can get Jane and Krugman on This Week at the same time we might witness the spontaneous combustion of George Will, or at least moderate smoldering of his toupee.
Love seeing Jane there, but really to my mind, the best part is that snip of the ad. Weeee!
Or Stephanopolis doing the full Oompah Loompah.
Agreed. Love seeing the ad on NBC news.
:)
Gee whiz I hope Blanche was watching.
…I almost never watch the stuff, but…
I watch occasionally, just because I know that that’s where my parents get their entire news of the world.
Although – finally, FINALLY, they’ve begun to at least suspect that maybe, possibly, maybe it’s worth considering, that I know a little more than what they’re being presented with.
took fucking years….
If you saw the lineup for this week’s This Week, you would go sit in the corner and cry. I did.
and I do believe that Blanche seems to have noticed too, based upon her performance today.
I have the impression you never really relax, but I sure hope you celebrate.
That has to be gratifying that you see your work on National News.
Cheers!
Every Saturday night I promise myself I won’t watch and every Sunday morning I break the promise and hate myself for it. There are exceptions. One glimpse of Little Dick and the TV goes off.
As Think Progress points out, Blanche Lincoln’s Senate website says she is for a public option:
Bets on how long it takes before that part of the the website is “memory-holed”?
There is no question that Blanche has seen the ads. Like to have been present when it happened.
Sitting in for Malkin and Ingraham this week on This Week: Marcia Blackburn.
One glimpse of Little Dick and the TV goes off.
Set her up against Jane and Katrina V. and I swear to doG I would pay to watch.
If my parents were living, I suspect they’d be wingnuts. Perfectly decent people, obviously, since they raised liberal me. *rolls eyes*
She has tried to publicly straddle the issue but is having a hard time of it because people are paying attention. It is clear that her actual sympathies lie with the insurance companies.
damn dude – you just made my teeth hurt.
I promise I won’t watch.
Thanks Jane and all you Pups.
I didn’t watch the TV machine / C-SPAN all day. I knew it would be painful. It’s faster and less stressful to read some stuff after the action has ended. I have no feelings one way or the other about the 60 votes to proceed. But maybe some more noise from us will make a difference. ‘Twould be nice to win one for the people.
You Pups are great.
PS. Thom Hartmann said it costs $1M to keep one soldier in combat for a year. That’s money for killing. A total waste.
Little does she know that in 20 years, she will be Ginny Foxx.
I will hopefully not be around to see it.
My dad was a lifelong conservative but he wasn’t stupid. He would not have been a wingnut. I only learned from my older sister after he died that if the Vietnam war had dragged on a little longer he had expressed his intention to personally drive my brother and me to Canada. Yay Dad!
How is the public option polliing in Arkansas? Does anyone have a link?
Dude, the world will still need you in 20 years. Just close your eyes when she comes round. Well, maybe you should keep them open but it’s alright to squint.
Polling results from 3 weeks ago here
I will hopefully not be around to see it.
hell – I don’t wanna be around to see it tomorrow.
According to this Zogby poll only 29 percent favor and 64 percent oppose. Being Zogby one can assume it is a load of shit.
True. After Ginny’s crazy-train trip back to the Civil Rights days this past week, we never know where she will land next.
Homestaters must directly talk face to face with Senators, Congresspeople, local staffers, state party directors, grassroots organizers….hmmmm, who else was at that get-together? Did I miss anyone? Nope.
Every single one of us can quietly unrelentingly keep up the effort. Even if it means takin’ a couple days time out for…well, we’ll save that for another time.
But we each can and must make a difference.
Thanks, Jane.
my parents, lifelong staunch republicans, are at least coming around. As it happens, I know how they voted in the last election.
Not perfect – they voted for minor-party candidates – but at least they did no damage.
mostly, they’re just confused, depressed and very, very jittery.
still – beats the shit out of straight-ticket R pull, no?
You were worried about the draft? Wait a minute I thought you was a girl.
Nope, just really small. :-)
also a load of shit the structure of the questions no doubt.
Probably something like, “Would you support a government run public insurance option of it makes abortion mandatory?”
still chuckling… ;-))
what a waste of a perfectly good bow tie.
After Ginny’s crazy-train trip back to the Civil Rights days this past week,…
Actually, I think that it’s good that there are barking-mad R’s floating all over D.C.
too bad that there’s no major media to put it out there, because it would fucking *kill* the R’s to have her, Gohmert, et al right out there in full public view.
I thought you made some kind of menstrual/ menopausal comment a couple of months ago that indicated your gender…….I am going to quit thinking so hard.
You can be certain it’s a clip-on.
Oh, gawd
Mixed blessings, IMO.
They recruit well, but only within a certain strata (dumbfucks). So maybe it evens out.
Ooh, thanks for that, was scrambling to find something in the way of polling I trusted which was recent.
I might have to squeeze that in at the end of the post!
Thank you so much. I’m writing a response to Nate Silver that will include a link to my FDL Seminal diary Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) Will Deny Arkansans and All Americans the Opportunity to Choose a Public Health Insurance Option (Unless We Stop Her).
Nate’s just way too wrong in his analysis of Blanche’s situation!
Btw, very interesting article about Blanche Lincoln’s woes yesterday at Salon here.
Only 29 percent of Arkansans favor a public option?
Wow, that seems a little improbable. Sure it wasn’t somebody with a really similar name?
At least three times a year some stranger mistakes me for a woman, most often a store employee who calls me ma’am. It even happened when I had a beard. My only explanation is that many people link gender identification with height (or the lack thereof). Pretty flawed system if that is the case, since there are so many tall women.
Wanna go on a date?
If you believe Zogby. I recommend you do not.
Landrieu?
Please, Kelly OD is the one that’s the most UNinformed, and greatest to fear, for her shit.
SOME one please, take Kelly Butty to task!!!
And way to beat them up, Mz. Hamsher.
Sorry it’s male posturing sounding, but FUCK Kelly!!!!
Worst. Journo. Evah.
Sure, be over in a half sec. :)
I am divorced you know, sort of.
Me too, despite never having been married.
Hey, mille grazie (a thousand thanks) for the hat tip on the post!
Part of the problem as I see it is the confusion about what this term means.
I think that when Orrin Hatch uses it, he means: “The government will completely run all health care, and your doctor appointments will take place publicly in warehouses (with large scary posters of dead fetuses) with no curtains and you’ll be lucky to get meds at all.”
Hatch really sounds as if ‘public option’ is some kind of huge, warehouse-like dehumanizing experience. No wonder people who believe him feel afraid.
I think that when Ron Wyden uses it, he means: “The government will be like a referee — it will supervise and control an exchange, and all the heath care providers will have to compete for your business against one another, but your personal experience of going to your personal doc and getting your personal meds from your favorite pharmacy will remain unchanged.”
Those are two completely different meanings of ‘public option’.
I have several relatives who are petrified of a ‘government run’ anything, let alone a ‘public option’. They think ‘public option’ is kind of like turning their bodies into a parcel moving through the postal system: dehumanizing.
They need better information.
I hope the Senate debate can provide a setting for Wyden and Dems to better explain what the ‘user experience’ would be like with a public option — because some people are thoroughly confused about it.
Mary, Mary,Mary,Mary,Mary.
So, will Ron be callin me, or do I hafta call him?
I’m eager to pick.
Tell him I’m better n the last time I came by.
I’ll bring the soda. OR, cranberry juice, which I favor.
*G*
Stai imparando l’italiano? Molto bene!
Ron doesn’t play anymore. Hasn’t for years. But you should call anyway. Drag him out of the house.
last off topic question: is there a single-letter html command for ‘strike’?
Sì – naturalmente! Sono una puttana d’opera.
She’s too tall for ya, besides, she’s divorced and STILL shacked up with a tall and handsome sailor.
Dem hotties are BRUTAL if yer prowlin for a hook up . . .*G*
*wavestoall*
Not that I know of. The shortest is del and /del if you don’t care to use strike and /strike
I am sitting here thinking that 30 years from now the Pubbies, maybe Virginia Foxx’ granddaughter will be rewriting history, giving credit to the Conservatives for passing universal health care………. Just as Foxxy lady is today claiming credit for the GOP passing the Civil Rights bills.
In response to Kelly Canfield @ 68
E’ la lingua piu’ bella nel mondo! C’e’ l’hai un’opera preferita?
S’okay, I’ve always looked up to women. :)
I gotta call him?
Geez . . . shoot me yer phone, I’ll do what I gotta do.
You know the email . .
‘Kin Ron . . . so he can drive? Or do I pick him up?
You divorcee’s . . . lololol
*G*
bmaz is doing the late night honors upstairs
In questo momento, io sono innamorato di Turandot. Puccini si sa.
Che bello! Giuseppe Verdi era dal paese della mia nonna.
Finally got that comment up to Nate Silver’s post, though the comment didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to. It makes the point: Blanche is screwed and knows it.
Rat & Mary
Don’t know if you’re here or upstairs, but, fuck me for not being here for your little chat. Coulda been even funner.
Mare – Ron should find a place to play, again. Opportunities are there if ya wanna.
We went out last night, the only live music in our little town. All oldies like us. Had a blast.
Music! Friendship! And, Other Stuff.
This is the first time I’ve actually seen Jane Hamsher, despite seeing her name and writings on this site. Have to say, I was very impressed! :)
Amazing. I swear if Jane keeps this up, I’ll be watching the nightly news again. Hear that, NBC?
Try sleeping in. It always works for me. When they stop flooding their shows with wingnuts I might consider taking a peep now and then.
Non è niente, siete i benvenuti. ;-)
