While some conservative commentators on US talk shows charged that the gesture bespoke a United States that had become weak and overly-deferential under Obama, Japanese media took a more positive view.
“If Obama simply walked up to the emperor and shook hands as he stood tall, he would have looked very arrogant to us,” said a Japanese presenter with Nippon Television.
Mami Matsuda, an expert in Japanese etiquette who has written many books on the subject, said Obama seemed to show his affinity to Japan with his bow.

I have spent my career on training individuals in regards to cultural respect, business practices and protocol for international exchanges and business meetings . Obama was spot on in his gesture and hopefully he and his staff had business cards printed two-sided, one side in English the other in Japanese. Although, Obama can by-pass the business card due to being a leader of a country. But his staff had better had them ready to go.

My own initial reaction to the bow was “Oh shit, here we go again.” My second thought was that it just looked awkward. Maybe a cultural thing for me? Or Obama is just tall? I dunno. Bottom line? It’s. No. Big. Deal. Now today, some right wing loon I know from cub scouts parenting send me an e-mail that Obama has directed the USPS to issue a “Muslim stamp” commemorating EID. Didn’t pass the smell test so I Google “Muslim stamp hoax.” Sure enough. There is an EID stamp. As there has been since 2001 and every year since. Look for this one on Fox & Friends.

When I met a group of Japanese businessmen in Redmond, I more or less involuntarily bowed to them, as it was apparent they were important by the obsequious manner of their escort. I suppose this was a result of martial arts training and a long stay in the Ryukus when I was a child. They bowed back and were delighted, as it was obviously not a courtesy they had experienced overly much here in the States.
The upshot is in Japan, a bow is a simple courtesy.

Fake “news” is in the business of generating the outrage du jour. There have been several blog posts on other sites with photos of various POTUS’s over the years engaged in bowing to various other heads of state, including the infamous photos of GWB kissing King Abdullah full on the lips, bowing to him and holding his hand.
When I meet people of Asian descent (from almost any country), esp if they or their parents are from the “old country,” I almost always find myself bowing to them as they are also bowing to me when we meet and shake hands. It is a CUSTOM and a courtesy. Big hairy deal. If the person is older than me, then I bow lower, as is the courtesy, and if the person is younger than me, then they bow lower. It’s like: big deal, so what. Next.
