Back in ye olde days, Republics tended to be WASPy types, you know: the country club set and all that (I say: tally ho!), and manners were a big deal to these folks. Although my family was of very humble origin, bc of my dad’s job, we mingled in said “country club set,” and my siblings and I were taught all sorts of “manners” and “etiquette” both in classes and from books. And although we were always polite kids, we really made an effort to comport ourselves esp. well when at said country club (even though, yeah, I didn’t like them even then, I thought the manners part was a good idea).

Bowing in Asian countries is a lot different from the POTUS bowing to the Queen/King of England (albeit, in this day and age, it is Republics who like to curtsey and bow to British royals). We used to be part of the British Commonwealth and any colonial pols and leaders were subservient to the British parly and the King/Queen. There is ample historical tradition about our POTUS NOT bowing to the British royals because of our revolution.

However, in Asia it’s a different thing, and it’s much more about their culture and customs, plus a big lashing of courtesy and etiquette thrown in for good measure. Plus no Asian country was ever our “ruler” (well except maybe now due to how much China owns us), so the concept of bowing to Asians is different.

But courtesy, etiquette, manners and graciousness are concepts that Republics discarded long ago and no longer hold as important, particularly when dealing with those they have decided not to like.

So the base rabble, whom the Republics once sought to distance themselves from, now run the show, and we all get to deal with the result.

Rather it is about graciousness and being polite in a society that values a gesture like this. I can appreciate why it may appear subservient, but I don’t consider it that way (nor do many others).
