The latest slaughter at Fort Hood created an often repeated response, right-wings and Islam haters claiming that liberals are ignoring the threat, and progressives claiming that the right is stirring up hate. A few years after 9/11 there was alarm in the Muslim communities, publicly in Canada, that some Muslim kids were growing up admiring 9/11. A Canadian Muslim legislator started very public programs to teach the Muslim kids the entire teaching of Islam, instead of some often out of context al Qaeda quotes.
At the moment a lot of 9 and 10-year-old Muslims in the US are again facing the hate pre-teen Muslim kids faced after 9/11. If wars between the US and certain Muslims seem endless, this could become a real problem.
Islomophobics want Muslims to be prevented from being in the armed forces. However, there is a desperate need for Arabic translators. Al Qaeda if you remember singled out, local translators for attack, making translators from abroad, critically important.
Most people have stopped dwelling on Iraq since US forces withdrew to their barracks, unless they got a request from the Iraqi Government, or a tit-for-tat ethnic bloodbath was going on. It looked like US withdrawal was near. Ominously, Nidal Hasan, kept dwelling on Iraq, very upset at the thought of a permanent Western presence.
Al Qaeda got really got upset by the thought the US might win, instead of bankrupting itself with endless wars. Al Qaeda added gruesome suicide bombings that were hard to detect like a remotely detonated bomb on 7-year-old who had downs syndrome, and one fanatic had a mother with downs syndrome, outfitted with a similar remote-controlled device. A son doing this to him mother violates not only Islam but the teachings of every historic religion or religious leader. Now that Iraqi police check absolutely everyone for such devises, al Qaeda has sent suicide-bombers to the Kurdish province to attack in the non-Kurdish neighborhoods, to try to stir up tit-for-tat violence.
I think we should respond to Nidal Hasan’s complaint of permanence by dwelling on Iraq with Canadian, German and other Western Forces serving as backup with the US only getting involved if both the Iraq Government and the Canadians and Germans ask for help. Kurdishstand where the latest gruesome attacks are happening could have backups from Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries with the US getting involved if they need help.
There needs to be interfaith efforts where kids both Muslim and non-Muslim work together. The Daniel Pearl Foundation organized by the relatives of Daniel Pearl who was, in a gruesome broadcast, beheaded instead of joining his captors in the spreading of hate, organized peace concerts and I hope again have interfaith seminars and prayer meetings.
What Hasan did should not be understated. He bought a rapid fire pistol in July and aimed carefully without viable emotion, I wonder if in the last days he was trying to make a better example then the 9/11 hijackers by piously giving away his Korans. Perhaps what he had was related to therapists catching their patients PTSD by emotionally listening too long, and he wasn’t mad because he thought he was doing his victim’s a favor spearing them future PTSD, but he also could have had contact with al Qaeda who may not have wanted to risk Americans surging into Muslim lands after a massive attack on the US.
Back to Afghanistan. I suggest that the US announce that it will withdraw to one base if the attacks stop for a month. And stay there after that unless the Afghan government requests. Perhaps negotiate a quick withdrawal as soon as guarantees against reprisal of those Afghans who worked with the Americans are in place.
However, if reprisals don’t occur, it will suddenly become apparent how few al Qaeda suicide bombers were assigned to Afghanistan, and the al Qaeda wouldn’t be able to claim victory. So the chances are as in Iraq many new people will die in Afghanistan no matter what the US does. We should let Obama know we realize that new people will be hurt no matter what the US decides to do or not do in Afghanistan. I think people who urge a quick withdrawal by Obama will have more clot is we admit that it won’t be easy.
It’s urgent that we do something about the right-wing constantly baiting for trouble. Before 9/11 some Bush administration officials were lamenting on the need for a wake up call. As government officials who warned of the al Qaeda danger weren’t promoted even demoted. After he left office, even some with defense credentials complained of Cheney trying to bait an al Qaeda attack.
There will be a follow up to the Fort Hood killings. If we are lucky it won’t involve Muslims but internally desperate kids such as at Columbine High.
Let’s dwell on organizing inter-ethic peace now rather than after a copycat incident. There needs to be a crash Muslim education program that only a few in the traditional Muslim armies were chosen to fight. Women and children were never used as shields like in the attack during rush hour on two US embassies in Africa. Children were never used as spies and look outs, so you could imagine what Prophet Mohammad would have said about the idea of a child Muslim soldier, especially a seven-year-old, with downs syndrome, who never chose to fight.
We got to spread the word that if the far-right keeps baiting for trouble they will eventfully get it. Please President Obama start making public offers for peace, no mater whether serious counter offers are made.
