Bad news, Mustangs. SMU’s academic reputation has officially been shitcanned.
In a speech at Southern Methodist University, home of his future library and museum, the former president will kick off the new George W. Bush Institute as a forum for study and advocacy in four main areas: education, global health, human freedom and economic growth.
Because if anyone in history is synonymous with economic growth, it’s George W. Bush.
Advisers said he hoped his institute would be more focused on producing results than many research organizations are.
Because if anyone in history is synonymous with producing results, it’s George W. Bush.
“The president has been working with these ideas for a long time now,” said James K. Glassman, a former top State Department official now serving as the institute’s founding executive director. “He wanted to do something very different from other former presidents, and that is to create a research institute that’s independent, nonpartisan and scholarly and that will have an impact on the real world.”
Translation: he wanted to cover up the festering pile of death and destruction he left behind in his wake by paying a collection of right-wing academic hacks lots of money to rewrite history.

He’s quite different already. What other former president is a motivational speaker?
BT, that’s called Strategery!
Maybe they can make Caribou Barbie the “Institurds” very first director.
Shouldn’t the Bush library be affiliated with the University of Phoenix? That’s about as scholarly as his library will get.
Principled members of the SMU community fought against this,
including faculty members and ministers. But, as is usually the case these days, the corporate oligarchy gets what it wants.
James K. Glassman? The James K. Glassman who wrote the inane Dow 36,000? The James K. Glassman who wrote an idiotic column about the GM and Chrysler Bankruptcies?
Who could be a better spokesman for the ex-president on the issue of getting things done through research than this non-reflective doppelganger of the ex-president?
Actually, an amusement park seems more appropriate.
As Mark Crispin Miller pointed out in The Bush Dyslexicon, Bush is only fumble-tongued on issues where he doesn’t feel certainly or familiarity. When he’s trying to talk about complex issues, or great emotional events, he’s in fumble-tongue mode. But when he’s talking sports or cracking jokes, particularly mean-spirited ones, he is quite articulate.
i’d feel alot better about the future if we could have a reckoning with our past.
Yeah, especially the House of Horrors.
From the article:
I don’t think that SMU will accept rejects from the already low-standards of Regent and Liberty “universities” even with this lie-berry being put in there. But, I could be wrong.
Nice traits…for a dinner party host.
Even better: Bush picked him to replace Karen Hughes at State, which since Dick Cheney and the PNAC crowd were making all the fopo decisions anyway was turned into the ultimate turkey farm.
Uh-huh. Dude couldn’t run a frickin’ gas station without serious help.
Good to know Bush will be looking forward and not backward. It’s quite the fashion nowadays. And we know how Team Bush hates the blame game.
Now — watch this drive.
…and the House of Smoke and Mirrors.
Seemed to have worked for Ronald Reagan.
The guy can’t even eat a pretzel unattended.
Um, no. A torture chamber.
John Bush can’t be happy when Decider Bush makes the news.
Even when he’s smiling for a photograph, that asshole STILL has the ever present smirk on his face.
I was SO goddammed tired of that smirk. I was tired of everything to do with him and The Dick. The only thing I don’t understand is why they’re not indicted and facing prison. If I had broken as many laws as those assholes I would’ve been put away a long, long time ago.
Fucking assholes.
My guess there will be a subterranean torture lecture hall with:
Education on how to torture to the point of death.
Health on how to destroy the mental health of the tortured but provide mental help to the torturers to deal with their stress.
Freedom on how easily the American public will give up their freedoms when confronted with islamo-fascists like el-kaedia
Growth as the benefits, economically, of torturing for fun and Profit.
Great, just great !
Will you be able to study all 6,000 years of history there?
Early on after Bush was in WH after the Arkansasans had moved out he pointedly declared dignity, decorum and decency would be restored to the WH with his being in the Oval Office.
R.B.Cheney must have got a deep chuckle on hearing that.
Well…we know how the dignity and decency restoration went while G.W.Bush was in the WH.
I am looking forward to someday visiting his library in Texas at SMU. I especially hope to see the Torture Room, the AGAG Room,BIG DICKS ROOM and of course what will have to be my favorite,Condis Mushroom Cloud Room.
A stroll through the Dead or Alive OBL Hall will remind me of the dignity and decency this man brought to the WH after his gang stole the 2000 election.
When is the next Bush due for a WH run, steal and slide into history?
I always thought he might be a good pick for a Kmart garden center, during the off season.
Not to be overly-dramatic….but this tripe/travesty almost makes me weep. My roots are in Dallas/dad SMU Alum; we grew up as Mustangs….sweet memories. Just sick about it…
did you have to include the picture? ruin my lunch like that Tex?
the Pony Express!
Yeh…outta here. It really hurts. A woman I know on the faculty was for the project; what a let down.
Oh, snap!
Free study guides but you have to be able to stay inside the lines when coloring them in.
I think the librarians should be required to wear clown noses.
But this really is in the great tradition of the very rich. The Robber Barons built libraries and museums after making their dirty fortunes. Bill Gates, after destroying his competition and making products which only work with other of his products, now is considered a generous man. Step on the poor going up and then build monuments to yourself which the poor can admire when you get to the top.
Any chance someone can borrow video from FOX to use to show how many protestors showed up?
i will not laugh, i will not laugh, i will not laugh BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oops
It’s W’s redoubt – his base for manufacturing and launching the propaganda.
Oh, gal, I’m sorry. Not the same, but almost, as having Michele Bachmann trash my entire state with her mindless braying.
All electronic archives will be pre-erased for accuracy.
She is going to be reviewing a book on C-span this weekend.
Michelle has been very quiet this week. I always wonder what’s going on when she’s not out there blathering to the cameras every day. We have lots of strange people in California (some of them in Congress) but she really wins the prize. So sorry for your state.
Close….the hit in the gut feeling…But not to feel alone…We’ve got the Gov Perry clown who wants to secede….Cute, Idiot.
John Bush is positioning for that now.
You give Michelle too much credit, she gets Pawlenty of help with the trashing.
absolutely
A White House official has announced that Obama is thinking about approaching Bush to co-found the institute in both their names, since Obama’s policies are basically exactly the same as Bushes. /s
I guess there won’t be any rooms to tout GWBs successes. Do you think anyone will notice?
I’m still hoping they meet [Edited by Mod. Please refrain from even fantasy violence comments]. Pigfuckers every last one.
GWB’s achievements do not require a whole room. There will be a bookcase in the “Transition Team Achievements” Room. /s
Michael Whitney has a fresh cross-post up: “Your Calls to the House: Whip Opposition to Triggers and Opt-outs”
Did you really have to show his picture? Was that absolutely necessary?
A whole bookcase? I think more likely a magazine rack. :)
Oh, you love it.
Please don’t…
OMG. She reads?
I threw up a little.
Big successful fundraiser for Taryl Clark (remember that name) this week. She’s taking on our gal, Michele. Taryl is good people. Strong Dem. Assistant majority speaker. If anyone has pennies to spare, puh-leeze help us rid ourselves of the Bachman Blight!!!
The religious right gives us plenty of crosses to bear.
Okay, what’s left of this comment reminds me of the old joke about the dirty limerick contest. The winner was so filthy, they dared not speak it publicly. Finally decided they’d read it, substituting a sound for the dirty parts. And so it read thusly:
Duh da-da duh da-da duh-duh.
Duh da-da duh da-da duh-duh.
Duh da-da da duh,
Duh da-da da duh,
Duh da-da duh da-da duh fuck.
Too much caffeine. Outta here to sober up.
While The Cat is away [to Asia], the rat sneaks out of his hole to posture and preen and smirk at SMU about his lie-berry.
“‘It raises the profile of SMU no matter how people feel about President Bush,’ he said.”
Colleges may be “liberal indoctrination” centers according to right-wingers, but right-wingers always end up running them (into the ground).
Nixon apparently wanted to dump his library on Duke, but they said, “No thanks.”
It’s just the first empty date on the “GET MOTIVATED!” tour.
that’s what I was thinking, too
This seems kind of like Hitler…yes the one and only, having his own institute of higher education in Germany after WWII. Much learning about torture and spying on citizens and and lying propaganda propelling.
That space between the grab bar and the wall over the toilet paper dispenser?
BT Bush proved Chicago School Economics wrong, Bush proved the Rumsfeld Doctrine wrong (what ever that was), School? well teachers and kids at the Lake have filled this blog with comments about teaching to the test how memorizing but not understanding facts to pass No Child Left Behind’s constant tests is not teaching the kids, that and some schools to get enough kids to pass were encouraging low test scorers to drop out. (I wonder if Bush were a student today he would have been encouraged to drop out?), Global Health more Aid For Africa just no condoms when Aids is the biggest threat.
Bush’s legacy he proved by experiment that the GOP was indeed WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING.
WPE = Wrongest President Ever?
You obviously are unclear on the concept of exactly what the Ministry of Truth does. Not only will this library have a wealth of data on the Divine Accomplishments of Greatest President Ever, it will also show how this Godlike, Historically Anointed Superman was forced to battle against a horde of satanic monsters worse than Hitler, Stalin , and Pol Pot! I refer, of course, to anyone who think the taxes of the super rich shouldn’t be lowered to zero. /s
Back when Bush was first trying to find a place that would take his library and was talking to SMU I contacted the SMU president’s office to point out what that would do to their academic reputation, especially the part about how investigators had to get approval from the Bushies before they were allowed to read anything. I don’t remember the reply exactly, but it diplomatically said that they were having their arms twisted. There was substantial resistance on campus from both faculty and students.
According to the story in NYT Bush wants to have his accomplishments researched. Given that most of his accomplishments were nothing to be proud of: the economic mess, giving away the Treasury to war profiteers, selling the elderly to the pharm industry and the insurance industry, totally messing up an educational effort, turned the country into a police state, enriching his buddies at the expense of working Americans who now suffer unprecedented levels of poverty, wasting eight years in reaching energy independence, getting over 500 Americans killed in two different wars and Lord knows how many wounded, and on and on and on, you have to wonder if the researchers will be allowed to present the facts. I really wish that SMU had had a bit more intestinal fortitude and stood up to him so that he would have had to send his “library” out of state and not continue to bismirch the good name of the Republic.
SMU has a war monger as a library
and we wonder why religion is slipping in numbers
a religious university supporting a library that has a war monger as a head
tell me capitalism has not come to america big time
even to the point of controlling universities with their money
how many iraqis has to be displaced, wounded, or killed for that library to be there.
hold your heads in shame SMU folks.
your understanding of the words of jesus is nil.
That should have been “5,000 Americans killed in two different wars.”
Translation: catnip for stupid rich people.
I thought Bachman’s district was getting eliminated after the 2010 census — the one she told people not to respond to [thereby reducing the number of people in the district even further].
Said so welllll. Abomination comes to mind. Shameful.
You mean SMU is still in the Legacies / gentleman’s C business? I’d heard most prestigiououis schools were getting out of that biz.
