Veterans’ Day 2009. A far cry from the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” Armistice Day was intended to celebrate the cessation of hostilities in 1918, an end to the horror that was WWI, and to honour those who had served.

Veterans’ Day 2009. Celebrated in the midst of an imperial power grab, 2 wars sucking the lifeblood out of countless young men and women. Two wars fought for those who desire power and wealth.

Bring Them Home.

Bring them home. Now. No more troops for Afghanistan, get out of both wars as quickly as possible. That’s the only acceptable solution to the military disasters wrought by George W. Bush. And then slash the war-mongering budget, reduce it to the point where aggressive and illegal wars are no longer possible. Defense only. Period.

Where lurks the Obama for whom I voted fifty-three weeks ago yesterday?

Well Morning Joe’s concern troll chorus is out in force this ayem. Politico’s Mike Allen practically peeing his pants with excitement. Mika, too. The TEA PARTIES ARE BACK. 50 of ‘em.

Yep. and it is all very bad for the Democrats. Lose-lose.

Because from David Gregory to the aforementioned to…. it’s all about the idiocy instead of the policy and the honest debate.

Props to Jon Stewart for pointing out how Fox cut-in fake clips for its GOPer rally. Will it take Jon Stewart to save us from the 50 tea parties, too?

Arlo

“When a Soldier Makes it Home

“

Halfway around the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier packs his memories
As he leaves Afghanistan
And back home they don’t know too much
There’s just no way to tell
I guess you had to be there
For to know that war was hell

And there won’t be any victory parades
For those that’s coming back
They’ll fly them in at midnight
And unload the body sacks
And the living will be walking down
A long and lonely road
Because nobody seems to care these days
When a soldier makes it home

This was actually written about the Russians

No More

One wearies of incessant Voice of war.
Across full breadth of time each nom de guerre
Inflicts upon the Human soul a scar
Which screams in mockery of hallowed prayer.
How many millions must we finally kill
Before is learned this simple quirk of fate:
That murdered dead, in valley or on hill,
Do NOT portend a Greatness in The State?
Upon this Earth of monuments and tombs
Which weep for fallen souls, it’s fair to shout
NO MORE! to darkness that forever looms
In constant threat. And let there be no doubt
Of this – War’s burdens hang upon the Cross
Of senseless death: as silent, wretched, loss.
(P.L.Nelson, 2004)

Stopping the military/industrial/media/church complex is easier said than done. As Emma Goldman said “if elections actually changed anything that would be the end of elections.”

Afghanistan is a tough call anyway you see it. Obama has one advantage that neither JFK nor LBJ had at a similar point in the development of the Vietnam conflict. The right wing was politically stronger in the early 1960s than it is today, in part because a big piece of wasn’t as far to the right. But the ‘who lost China’ gang were alive and kicking. JFK was barely (and possibly illegally) elected. The Cold War liberal establishment was strongly entrenched. He and his successor felt they had to cover their backs. LBJ admitted as much, and I don’t think this was special pleasing.

Obama is getting a lot of heat, but he has way more room to manoeuvre on this decision than JFK and LBJ had. Like almost all of us here, I think we should get out. But there’s a case for not abandoning the place to the people who blow up world monuments for religious reasons.
