On Sunday’s Nov. 8th’s “60 Minutes” they ran a piece on cyber terrorism. In it a senior govt. official said that the US suffered a huge cyber terrorist attack in 2007 that managed to hack into the defense dept. and a host of other critical intelligence cyber networks. Here’s the point…

The next time Cheney, his daughter or any other batshit crazy rethuglicon says that Bush and his administration kept us safe from terrorist attacks after 9/11 (but not before of course) kick them in the nuts with this fact and remind them of their convenient little oversight…

Yes, that was the point. And why I said “some Muslims” and “according to those interpreters.” And before you accuse me of “smearing” Islam, try Googling for Islam+democracy+tawhid, or similar combinations. It’s a matter of debate within Islam to what degree “its” (painting with a broad brush again) political conceptions can be harmonized with democracy (remember, in my initial message I was even more restrained, limiting it to Western democracy. Some Muslims make it a point of pride that their faith is incompatible with democracy (see, for example, Islam, the West, and Politics, or This sermon (“there is no democracy in Islam”). Are these views typical of Islam? Probably only given a certain interpretation of “democracy,” but they are probably one legitimate interpretation of the tawhid concept that continues to influence a considerable number of Muslims to one degree or another. Other Muslims are searching for a legitimate rapproachment with democracy, searching for a way to reinterpret the Islamic experience in a way that allows for democratic government, but it remains a stumbling block, or if you prefer, a matter for serious debate within the community.
