After indicating that she could live with the Stupak amendment in an interview Monday morning, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said tonight that she opposes the measure because it overreaches in restricting access to abortions.
Her words mark a slight change of attitude from this morning, when she suggested on MSNBC that the amendment offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) to the House’s healthcare bill was the price supporters of Democratic healthcare reform would have to pay in order for a bill to pass Congress.

The nitwits in the Senate prolly can’t wait to put Stupak’s language in their bill.
Bart Stupak and his american taliban coalition have been probably pushing this crap for quite a while.
Since the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock.
Everyone is jockeying for position on this one.
We need a scorecard to keep track of who supports what then make a master list of Forced Birthers in Congress. We’ve already got 39 names, or was it 64, from the House.
Last night, Rachel said Ben Nelson was already chomping at the bit.
Looks like edit is nonfunctional again.
On edit, naw it only takes about 3 refreshes to show up.
Reid needs to split the bills now and take the PO through reconciliation. Screw Liarman, Ben Nelson, Landrieux, Lincoln, and the rest of the industry mouthpieces.
Morning pups. Today is another ‘worst fears confirmed’ day. I see in the business section of the NYT that there will be effectively no cost controls on the insurance companies in whatever new bill comes out of Congress. The ‘pragmatist’ (aka Rahm) believe (and he probably has reason) that no bill which attempts seriously to reign in the companies can pass the House, for the simple reason, as he put it in his inimitable way, ‘they have constituents, too.’ I guess we know who those constituents are. Certainly not the public.
I always thought that the United States going towards public health care was going to be like the old Soviet Union adopting capitalism — a huge short and medium-term disaster. Anyone here think otherwise?
A poorly crafted bill will ultimately prove to be a disaster and provide fodder for the rethugs to wipeout any advances. Nothing is better than the piece of shit bill that is out there.
Don’t forget the Reid is a Moron, and as such he is pro-forced birth.
Good Morning Knut.
I agree in spades.
there was a cms report that came out a couple of weeks ago, it was an analysis of the original tri-committee bill hr 3200 (not as bad as the one we have now) and it predicted increased total national health expenditures in 2019 (reform vs no reform) and no control of rate of cost increases.
How can anyone in good conscience be a Forced Birther?
Good Morning Pups
I hope Chris Hayes’ contacts are correct and that the amendment gets stripped out.
Just to let people know, I’ve left my hammer in the tool box this morning.
and for the short version here’s a comment with some quoted bits from the cms report on cost and other worrisome stuff.
What is with this good conscience stuff. It is easy for the taliban.
It’s not hard when one listens to men who lived about 5000 years ago and kept their women separate from the rest of the household, killed them if they strayed or tossed them out if they didn’t produce male heirs. The only difference between our forced birthers and the Taliban is that our forced birthers have electricity and running water.
Owe ya a beverage. I’ve got water, milk and tea.
Thats OK I’m drinkin coffee
BTW, interesting documentary on PBS last night…”How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin.”
http://www.examiner.com/x-2082-Beatles-Examiner~y2009m10d1-PBS-to-air-How-the-Beatles-Rocked-the-Kremlin-in-November
I don’t have that ability. Sorry, I shouldn’t be making jokes, I just never heard the phrase Forced Birther before.
Ben Nelson has already made it clear that he will.
and nukes
Don’t forget, twitter.
Is anyone else wearing their freedom leis this morning?
It seems like some Congress critters have taken a metaphorical morning after pill. Throw women under the bus, and sane people don’t like it. Who woulda thunk it?
If you want some fun, call Stupak’s office to share your thoughts and feelings. I know it’s not nice to bother staffers just because they work for tools, but… I make an exception here.
I’m waiting for the women’s movement to get into the act here. Gloria Steinem, where are you?
Happy Birthday Raven !
Mornin’ All
What’s that all about?
Morning maam – I am from the rethug party and we want to get the government out of your life. Have you fulfilled your obligation and had a baby this year?
Jon Stewart. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/10/jon-stewart-mocks-use-of_n_351911.html
He cracks me up. Good to laugh in the morning.
Raven’s a birthday boy? Happy birthday, bro.
I could be wrong, but I think he was referring to the day he was drafted. No?
Happy birthday Raven.
Gotta be more specific. Did you have a white male baby this year?
I thought cost was one of the Obama goals, like no pre-existing conditions. What happened?
Thanks!
Yo!
Didn’t you see the way they treated the women Congress members who lined up to make statements about Stupak on Saturday? They hassled and harassed and “objection”‘d them out of their right to speak as full members of the House of Representatives. These people don’t acknowledge women as equal human beings, let alone adult citizens able to make their own decisions. I have never been as sickened as watching that blatant display of bullying by the Repugs.
Guess I read that wrong.
So, Many Happy Returns of the Day, Raven. How are you celebrating?
Dunno if this is a typo or not, but it works either way! He is a Moron AND a Mormon!
hope it’s a good ‘un sweetie :D
Next up, a bill to repeal the 19th Amendment.
Cool.
If Reid doesn’t put it in the proposed bill, a Stupak like amendment is going to be damn near impossible to insert.
I am betting Reid, although not pro choice, leaves the Stpak language out.
hell, they’d have rolled back the 14th to get this Bill passed – and George Miller would have been there telling his African American colleagues ‘more people in the House were pro slavery than anti-slavery, get used to it!’
happy b-day raven!
ouch!
because so close to the truth.
“Pro-life” politicians are used to making empty gestures to placate the crazies. I’m guessing that there will be more second thoughts because they did not give much thought to the Stupak amendment and its implications.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Cool morning here in the subtropics and all of a sudden my tigers are tearing the goddamn place UP! Holy moly. Hope there’s something left to come home to.
US KIA Irak: 4362
US KIA Afghanistan: 916
US MBS 2009: 38,812
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Happy Birthday, Raven! Is it close?
Can someone explain to me why Obama has apparently decided to send 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan, when his national security advisor Gen. James Jones said last week “You can keep on putting troops in, and you could have 200,000 troops there and Afghanistan will swallow them up as it has done in the past.”
Am I reading this right?
I realize I’m playing catch-up on this issue, but I’m confused.
not knut and just my opinion, but we’re being lied to. a lot.
Too perfect!
peace
No, can anyone explain why we would be spending hundreds of billions on warfare instead of healthcare?
Hey, demi!
We need…Beatle Power!
Can you imagine the calls, faxes and emails the Senate is getting from the forced birthers? They’re estatic and smell blood. Dangerous combination in the unhinged.
No doubt….
Demi, I thought I heard that update as well..So, no, I do not
have an answer. Just b/c we love war is the answer that keeps
drifting thru my little mind.
+, The service worked pretty well….part of the readings
included language about care for strangers. Tried to be
very inclusive. Thanks
Scary…..
So it’s CYA then?
Is that how you get Senate Republicans to be in favor of federal funding of abortions is to have a Dem propose an ammendment to block it?
It’s the building of the modern American empire. Control of oil in the Middle East with Israel the enforcer in the region and control of a pipeline in Afghanistan with the usual puppet govt as enforcer. Honduras. Guam. Okinawa.
Healin’, not killin’.
Anyone think it might be some sort of move to gain a hold there so that a pipeline can be put in?
CYA? Nope. Votes.
Good for you! You’re in a great position to have a positive influence, as well as sharing comfort and hope.
All we need is love?
Just like W’s plan for an “humble” foreign policy? It looks to me as tho’ the empire view is no longer working so well for us & other living things. When will we ever learn?
I went to a lecture last night about foreign aid; yes, including how much less money is being spent.
ineed it is
You won’t yammer with a girl with a hammer?
Who on earth is Anh Joseph Cao (R-LA) and why was he the lone Republican to vote for the House healthcare bill? ..must be a story there somewhere
If she becomes a spammer we’ll have to throw her in the slammer. *g*
He beat William Jefferson who is now awaiting sentencing. New Orleans is a very demo district.
boy.. he really must be on the Teabaggers’ shite list. He should start a club with Scozzafava. Thanks to him, the Pelosi bill got one more Republican vote in the House than did the original Medicare.
Doubt he is getting a lot of requests from the speakers circuit.
But he’s our hero….do you think he has a little sense? Or, maybe daughters? I did hear he is not expected to run again; no details.
These C Streeters actually live by the precept that white men are next god, and then women and minorities are “under” white men (eg, next in line). Not sure if white women come before minority men or vice versa. But seriously and honestly, that is what they believe, and they are sticking to that.
That is a big part of the motivating factor both for Stupie-boys nasty little amendment, as well as for how C Streeters act, behave, legislate, do bidness and all the rest of it.
They are sexist Talibanistas, and they definitely want to keep women “in their place.” Never, ever think otherwise.
Call up Stupak’s office today early, often and late. Give ‘em hell. Don’t care about his staff at this point.
Oops, little Freudian slip there! :-)
Why stop at the 19th? Seems to me that if you really want to get health care reform, we have seriously to think about repealing the 13th and the 14th. Not too high a price to pay if you’re not black, after all.
I guess I should add that it was Lincoln’s party that in 1876 sold out the ex-slaves for the Presidency in a contested election. Stupak is just more of the same.
happy birthday Ravedude
Happy birthday Raven!
If he switched parties he’d retain his seniority if he won. Also that sort of party-switching is not all that common in those regions.
