In the wake of some criminal or morally reprehensible behavior by a brown person non-conservative, wingnuts absolutely hate any attempt to examine the psychological state of the culprit.
You saw this last week after the tragedy at Ft. Hood — they were besides themselves that the media reported the allegation that Nidal Hasan had been taunted because of his religion. OMG THE LIBRUL MEDIAS MAKING EXCUSES FOR THE TERRORIST OMG!
So it was amusing to see that pasty butterball Frank Luntz, wearing way too much makeup on “This Week”, telling us we really need to understand that those patriotic teabaggers were waving disgustingly graphic and wildly inappropriate holocaust signs because they’re just fearful for their children’s future. And we should understand that John Voight’s speculation that Obama had been “programmed” to “destroy America” was merely the result of his fear that his grandchildren would inherit a diminished America.
You know you’ve really screwed the pooch when you get put in your place by…Cokie Roberts.

Yeah, whatever else there was no excuse. I mean, Jon Voight? Elected officials engendering that mess. It’s hard to know where things will land when serving congress persons think that that constitutes a constuctive contribution to anything other than a violent, rascist national discourse. These folks care about no one, least of all anyone’s children.
And to think Jon Voight got an Academy Award nomination for his role as a disabled Vietnam Vet.
While lecturing Donna Brazile, George Will had yet another “you people” incident. To be fair, I think he was referring to all of Lefty-America-haterdom and not, uh, you know, the other thing.
Excuse me? The Republicans are the party of rape, but not pooch-screwing. Puh-leeze! /s
And just who is scaring all these folks?
I think of that every time I hear him open his mouth.
I wonder sometimes if conservatives in the entertainment biz are that way because of familiarity breeds contempt syndrome. Most of their peers are reputedly liberal, so swimming against that imaginary current is a token gesture of defiance.
Or maybe like Voight they’re just ignorant assholes.
Frank Luntz is the master of twisted rhetoric and vilification by innuendo. See: mongering, fear. A very scary radical right wordsmith who makes it stick.
Not really mutually exclusive concepts. Anyway, they probably rationalize the latter by saying it’s okay if you let the pooch finish first.
The fat man has no hair.
When is someone going to rip Luntz’s ridiculous wig off his head?
The right wing hasn’t merely screwed the pooch, they’ve screwed the pooch while jumping a toy motorcycle over a tankful of communists with frickin’ lasers on their heads.
I agree. The reason it sticks is because all of the repubs repeat the same words over and over. Dems don’t. The constant Daily Show go-to is all of the fox people and other cable channel people using the same word over and over.
I repeat: Dems don’t. Until they do, they will lose and so will we.
Watch Poliwood …
This same Frank Luntz was chastising the “Hollywood Liberals” for being so vehement in their opposition to Bushian Policies …
I guess he had a change of heart when he realized his side of the aisle could utter much more incendiary rhetoric …
Also agree; the Republicans ’sound’ coherent, particularly to people who have trouble processing information.
Having worked with people with learning disabilities, I can’t emphasize strongly enough how important it is for people who are stressed, distracted, anxious, and preoccupied to have a simple, clear, consistent message. And optimism.
The teabaggers are all anger, and no solutions.
Dangerous combo.
It gets even worse: Joe LIE announced today he will hold Homeland Security hearings on Moooslums in the military.
Fixed it for you.
You’ve. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me. JHFC
They have a solution: a govt consisting of a president and vice president, DOD and DOJ. All their “problems” are solved.
Oh great. When will the hearings start on Christians in the military?
Nope, check my diary. I have the transcript from his appearance on Fox News Sunday.
Actually, conservatives are afraid of their reflections in the mirror. This is why they make signs calling everyone else a Nazi but themselves. See? It makes them feel better about themselves.
With their DoJ’s sole purpose being to prosecute all those who don’t believe as they do.
What a complete LUMP Luntz is now-a-days…He talks gibberish..he’s spent WAY too much time with hannratty on Cluster-Fox cause he sounds kinda like him now and he ’spews’ when he speaks now…how lumbering a lummox he is now – and at the same time a COMPLETE waste of space.
That’s the second part of it. The first part is Luntz tests manipulative language with focus groups to determine which words and phrases can resonate the most with people. Part of that has to do with finding the idioms and frames that already exist in people’s heads.

I’m glad to see media insiders waking up a bit when it comes to the unhinged craziness that is today’s Republican party and right wing.
Frank Luntz offered some comic relief. He thinks it’s really important that Americans think the U.S. is going in the wrong direction. We’ve just finished a 28 year cycle in which Republicans held the White House for all but 8 years. If the Americans Luntz cites are right that we’re going in the wrong direction, that the next generation will not inherit a strong nation, who’s to blame for that? The Reagan Revolution was a charade and people are rightly outraged by the way Reagan and Bush II undermined the middle class. Luntz and the Republicans are hoping that anger can be rechanneled and focused against the Democrats. Orwellian stuff.
Cokie Roberts has become my new favorite object of scorn…why? Because on the health care question, she opined that denying coverage to women “victimized by domestic violence” affects “only a relatively few women.” Idiot.
She can look up statistics that sometimes find one in four women affected by domestic violence. While it may have been thought that harm could mean a slap or push, still not acceptable, family violence is often phyically damaging, life threatening, permanently disfiguring (mental/physical). She should not have a platform for her lack of information.
agreed–Roberts often presents unsupported assertions as fact–even when her claims turn out to be incorrect. she’s not along in this, of course, but is a prime example
Someone please remind me.
I don’t remember seeing the teabaggers protesting the actual destruction/bankruptcy of our country while Bush was using the Constitution as toilet paper when it was actually happening.
If I remember correctly they were cheering and labeling anyone a traitor if they didn’t cheer the actual destruction/bankruptcy and using of the Constitution as toilet paper.
That explains why they keep getting the swastikas backwards.
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Barbara…dontcha’ know….to each his own.
I guess it was all the Jews fault that Hitler didn’t like them! Those darn negroes are responsible for Jim Crow and slavery before that. If they had made themselves more likable to those Southern white folks, none of that would have happened. The victims are totally responsible for the unreasonable fear that bigots feel. If the down trodden would simply be less fearful, the ignoramuses would not feel compelled to oppress them.
“You know, we aren’t acting racists because we actually are racists. No, we are doing this for our grandchildren!”
Voight is probably trying to keep his job with right wing zionist Hiam Saban, the producer of power rangers.
Cokie Roberts is a dunderheaded idiot. Recall that during the general election, she commented that Obama was going to “exotic” Hawaii on his vacay to visit his dying grandma. Almost anything coming out of her mouth is stupid anymore, if not downright venal or teabagger b.s.
The whole teabagger meme that the country is suddenly NOW going down the toilet and ohmigawdwhataboutthegrandkids has been very clearly and carefully taught to these idiots. I know bc my teabagging family members have attended rallies with signs saying just that. I then knew that their corporate overlords had instructed them to say that. It’s not like they thought of it on their own (I say that seriously and honestly).
Well, it makes a kind of sense given the state of our courntry’s economy and all, and I think all of us had concerns about TARP and the stimulus.
but as bloggers of the left have been stating endlessly, where oh where were these stooges when W & the puppetmaster Cheney were spending like drunken sailors? and lied us into at least one war that has cost us billions upon billions (not to mention lives), but of course Cheney and W got rich from all of that. When the left protested then we were resoundingly told to STFU and “support the troops” ad nauseum.
Suddenly on 11/4/08, all that changed, and now it’s all the Democratic party’s fault that we’re in trouble. So tired of this nonsense.
And so fracking sick and tired of hearing people, like Luntz, poop out crap about how very, very “frightened” these idiotic teabaggers are, and how we must all exhibit all this vast great care and concern about their iddle widdle fweelings. Spare me. What about my feelings over the past 8 years – and more years before that under Reagan & HW?? My feelings meant doodly to these jerkwads. So why should I be concerned about their feelings? Strictly rhetorical questions, of course.
one of my friends, who ‘crossed over’ to the dark side of tea baggin and fearmongering last spring, explained it in almost the exact words…”i am sooo afraid, afraid for my kids, afraid for my country. afraid i am losing my country”
I almost bought his ‘fear’ as genuine,
til he started sending me articles,(because he ‘cared’). absurd, dark articles about liberal thinking as fascism, Obama’s socialism, etc. etc.
I hear the same language popping out from the mouths of every teabagging pundit and politician. now from this Republican strategist. That’s it. they are using ‘fear for our childrens’ future” as the justification for the most outlandish demonization of rational thought imaginable.
I say grab a mop and start doing something positive. pick yourself up,
wash off some of the Fox dung and get to work. you’ll feel less fearful, you feel better about yourself , your kids and the future. really, you will.
Roberts is a complete idiot. In saying no party’s future lies in rhetoric programmed enemies of the state, she shows her ignorance of history. I can think of one party that had a 12-year run using cringing rhetoric like this. There, too, it played to a mass that, like Luntz’s mega-focus group, saw a declining future that had an alien virus to blame and that contradicted an unshakeable beliefs in their nation’s exceptionalism.
When will we have someone on one of these shows to talk about what fascism is? When will they begin to fit Luntz and his ilk under this category?
How about never? Is never soon enough?
