The Little Things Matter…
Well, as I was driving around the other day, I saw how the season has totally changed. The leaves have turned and are falling to the ground, the birds have flown South for the winter, and there is a brisk chill in the air.
You know what this means….the holidays are coming! There was a time when at this time of the year I started getting depressed because of all that I did not have or had not accomplished. Well, that has surely changed…
Now, I am so thankful for all of the good things that have come to me and I appreciate the little things. Those little things can mean so much more than the big ones sometimes. I am learning that in my old age.
What are some of the little things that make you the happiest these days? I’ll go first. One — my occasional morning where I just take a minute and drink my chai tea latte and eat my banana nut bread. Two — my 30 minute whirlpool bath that is supposed to help my leg, but actually gives me some time to relax, relate and release. And lastly, that good night phone call that puts a smile on my face right before I fall asleep.
Doesn’t seem like much, does it? Maybe not to some of you, but to me my day is better if at least one of those things happen.
What are some of your little things? We have had some devastating things to happen in this country over the last few days. People are not happy and some have lost all hope. Let’s remember those who have suffered loss and take a moment to think on the little things that really do matter.

About Firedoglake

Good morning. Having quietly bright friends to talk with – who alleviate the pain of insanity we fortunately don’t share – is a big deal, and, I admit, really good coffee.
Yes, it is small things unrelated to money or position on the class scale that make me happy: my family is healthy, I am able to get up every morning and do what I need to do, I can help my mother get through from day to day, we have a home at the edge of the woods, the wild animals pass through our yard (including the bears), and I got to pet the feral cat that comes to eat on our porch. I also am happy that I can read books and FDL on the internets. I could go on and on, as you see.
Good Morning Ruth! Yes, it really is…
Well, let’s see:
A good cuppa coffee
My feline companion purring in my lap
A good book
(and this one may seem strange but) Facebook allowing me to stay in touch with family spread all over and re-connect with friends, classmates from long ago, and even former co-workers from over the years)
And I can probably add a few thousand more things but will stop at this point. :})
Good Morning DeVeria .
FDL, the morning papers(online of course!) and especially that nice hot cup ‘o Joe
I hear you…when I was a child I used to think that if I had money I could buy happiness. Not so. Happiness comes from within and doesn’t come from how much money you have. Although, I think the bear in the yard would make me more scared than happy…lol
I’m right with you! Facebook has been great for me too…I have reconnected with so many people from my past that I had lost touch with over the years.
It will put a smile on your face every time!
Speaking of FB , last weekend I attended an Halloween party with a friend I hadn’t seen in 30 years. He is now living in Maryland ,I’m in Mass ,and we connected through FB.
Yep. Once you find one person from the past on there, then more and more names keep popping ups as others join in.
“brisk chill in the air.”
22 degrees here at 6:30 AM and a hard frost covering the ground
I hear you…last night here on the news they said that it was going to be the coldest night yet. Hopefully, it will warm up by the time I have to do my running around.
Funny, have not gotten on FB but every now and then that out of the blue email/comment/communication from some one I haven’t seen in aeons is a treat. Next week will visit my son in D.C., and drop in on a few friends, meet Jason and have some good times. That will be lovely except for making it feel a bit more isolated here in the hinterlands.
Don’t think we’re ready for that, it’s Indian summer here and we’ve been getting into the 80’s.
you should try it…you will be surprised how many faces from the past you will come across.
Hmmmm..What makes me happy? I’m taking a week off from work starting 12/7. It’s been a busy year and now it’s either take it or lose it. Will be staying home for the week so I need a good book. Anyone?
You know, I normally don’t do a hot breakfast. But I just got a taste for some bacon, eggs and toast…
trade ya !
Where are you ?
me too!
Middle aged back acting up again , can’t sit long , have to get up every few minutes to straighten things out !
I’ve known even some avowed vegetarians that would occasionally “fall off the wagon” after the smell of bacon frying permeated the house. Talk about your comfort foods, bacon is near the top of the list for lots of folks.
Morning all.
Last week I was still digging out from 26″ of snow. Yesterday it was in the seventees and 65 today.
Waking up every morning with the dog trying to worm his way under my arm and lick my face is kind of icky but I do like it. Talking to and visiting the kids and grands is wonderful.
Reading my book when everyone else in the house is sleeping, the first cup of morning coffee, my cat falling asleep on my lap, just before sunset when my yard is bathed in a gold light.
Morning, DeVeria. For me, I like best a quiet morning, nice coffee, sitting in front of my computer reflecting on a blog post.
I am trembling as we head into the healthcare vote, this is a day I have long hoped for and now I am filled with a mixture of anticipation and dread.
If you want to read some good books or a good book, I would suggest the newest translation of Don Quixote, that should take the whole week. If, however, you would like to read some books, I would suggest Eric Hoffer’s The True Believer, and, if you like mysteries, the Jane and … series by Stephanie Barron. (The little thingys at the top for editing didn’t seem to work for me.)
Is the vote definitely on for today?
Yes, but that’s got good and bad aspects, doesn’t it!
passage of this bill with the PO would be a huge victory for the people
Definitely until it is postponed. *g*
I’m out here in rural N.TX. – and it’s nice a lot of times, but not in August.
Seeing one of your posts sure makes me happy, Deveria. you are such a bright soul.
I had a most amazing experience this morning; I went outside for my meditation and the clouds took my breath away. They also took my pain, my megrims and my irritation at not getting enough sleep.
I started thanking the Great Spirit for everything and a weight lifted form me that I’ve been praying to be rid of for months.
I’m still stunned by the depth of that spiritual experience.
And am still in there; each moment is a treasure.
Good morning, DeVeria, one of my many little things is “breakfast” for dinner; especially Sunday night scrambled eggs with gouda cheese, bacon or sausage, lots of toast with cabot’s real butter.

Good Morning DeVeria, pups -
One of my little pleasure treasures is Pull Up A Chair, with a kitty or two by my side.
Spent some time near San Antonio(Lackland AFB)
There were a few days that got so hot the black flag was flown no marching no outdoor pc it was brutal
K: Good Morning….I had been looking for you…A couple of weeks ago you mentiond thyroid support, I think. Would you say some more? Do you do that thru Whole Foods, etc. Thanks. Glad you are having a good morning
Amy Goodman; “Standing up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times ”
is one goodie.
The True Believer looks promising. I haven’t read ‘The Shock Doctrine’ yet. Maybe I’ll add that one too. Plan to spend some time at amazon looking around. (But, I’d much rather travel somewhere (sigh))
OT – costume party
I’m going to a party tonight, and just found out it’s a costume party. My idea is to go as a wing nut, but I would love some input.
My initial idea is to, of course, fashion a tinfoil hat in the shape of an actual wing nut. Then I’ll have a box of tea bags, a fake Obama birth certificate and maybe even a cardboard iPhone tuned to Fox News.
Any other ideas on how to make the costume complete?
My only visits to San Antonio have been in nice weather, able to saunter along Riverwalk and enjoy what a CCC can do, and should be doing now.
for those not familiar; http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/
hmm , I wonder if there is a way to lower your IQ by 30 points ,then you would be right on
8 months pregnant from rape & single?
Those metal tea eggs make very easy earrings for pierced ears (or nose), and you can’t go wrong with WalMart sleaze.
LdOL so hard I scared my cat;))
Now must get out and do things for awhile, thank you all for being here.
I enjoyed my trip into San Antonio did the Riverwalk visited the Alamo did the tourist thing.
Beautiful city
“Republicans united against the bill….government take over”
Are there going to be real wingnuts there? Will you have a copy of the constitution that you haven’t read or understood with you?
Have you tried water exercise? That really helped me…
Don’t forget your bible.
wish I had some right now
what a difference in the weather!
Thank you for sharing a revelation beyond space and time; it’s rare to catch one –let alone recognize it.
karen
I know exactly what you mean
Ran out of bacon yesterday AM. Looked for it when I was grocery shopping yesterday but I refuse to pay $3 per lb. for it.
I don’t know who’s all coming, but from the ones I know of are all quite liberal.
Foothills, I was thinking instead of the whole Bible, just tearing out the book of Leviticus and bringing that.
A paper bag labeled, “fake Kenyan birth certificates”?
I was also thinking about The Constitution, although I don’t want to give the impression that a Wing Nut actually cares about it. I was again thinking of just bringing the Tenth Amendment. Or a copy of the Constitution with huge chunks of it redacted.
I live in the norther part of Washington State. Today I am on my way to Olympia, my state capitol to plan out some activist work for the up and coming legislative session, which this year lasts 90 days. I am an activist for low income moms and adults after having been a low income mom for over 30 years myself, and now a low income senior. In that time we will have to persuade legislators to write, introduce and pass legislation that address the myriad of problems that low income people face today.
It may sound like “work” but to me the joy of making an impact for thousands of people as well as “therapy” for my own situation, is life saving for me. Usually the poor are the last thing on the docket, standing in line behind our corporate tax breaks and policies that will make life even harder for the poor.
In my state the poor pay over 19% of their incomes in taxes, which is a terrible burden on families who barely bring in enough to pay the high rents, much less gets them to work in snarled traffic that takes them away from their children and families. We have 2 of the richest men in the world living in our state, who barely pay 3% of their incomes and industries like Boeing who pay 0 ~ nothing, nada, not a red cent.
Care goiving IS work, that is my motto. Women lose on the average of almost $1/2 million dollars over a life time and it is considered “doing nothing” when in fact it is a linchpin for our communities as caregiving saves communities millions of dollars from institutional care.
But you wouldn’t know care giving saves anything. Last year, after struggling a bill through our House and Senate, our “Democratic” governor vetoed a bill that would support a poor mother to stay home with her newborn for a year. This would allow her baby the crucial bonding time they need, rather than the barely 3 months Mom is allowed with her baby now. Before being shoved out the door into an exploitive McJob, if there are any, that will keep her and her baby poor for the rest of their lives. She has little hope to get further education because the road blocks for this route is blocked with treacherous barriers the render it almost impossible to go to college and be a parent.
Older women like me are becoming homeless after givng this care first for their children, then for their elderly parents and then, if she hasn’t been dumped for the secretary, her spouse. There is little or *no* support for them, and you would be amazed how many well educated, women with lots of work experience are on the streets becuse nobody will hire them, and nobody wants to address the age discrimination for little-than-older-than-middle-aged women (and some men) face. They have no histories of drug abuse or alcoholism, they are simply tossed aside.
This is my passion and my comfort to do this work. Though it is windy, raining like hell outside and the trip is fraught with floods, and bad roads, I WILL be in Olympia today. Because I do not want one more person to face the life I have lived in povery. Maybe someday our governor will find her heart and sign an important bill into law that will support poor mothers, a veteran living in a tent, a middle aged woman with a that pays her rent and medical, or a house sick old man dying of cancer on the street, instead of underwriting Boeing and Microsoft so rich CEOs will pay some taxes rather than enjoy another yacht…but I will not hold my breath …

Wow…isn’t it wonderful to be able to experience a spiritual enlightenment? I wish all could or should I say would experience it. Now that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
I am really craving some of that right now…
Awww, I enjoy it too
Bring a few loose screws to spread around…
Good morning, all. Gorgeous morning here in North Florida. Low 60’s and clear sky. My wife is headed out to ride her horse and my coffee cup is full.
Mornin’, DeVeria, pups
Can’t imagine a tea latte but…
A nice pot of tea, organic Black or Oolong, a good book or 3 and a parade of tigers vying for attention and some time as a lap lump. And cookies. Gotta have cookies.
Gotta be only the Old Testament, though.
Have a good one!
oh boy…$3?
Please let us know how that goes!
Good Morning DeVeria and Firedogs,
echoing BearCountry waaaay upthread – I have kept a gratitude journal for almost 20 years – wherein I write God a Thank You note every night listing 5 items for which I am grateful – and it’s always these so called little things – healthy, fed, sheltered kids, small kindnesses from/to friends, time with those I love, a loving kitteh, migrating cranes overhead, etc. hell, sometimes I’m just thankful that particular day is over :)
this community and all it has brought me, is a regular entry
don’t forget your AF-15 :D
Now you will be doing something today that has real meaning and purpose. I applaud you for your efforts to try to ensure that others will not have to travel down the same road you did. Making a difference…now that is a big thing to be thankful for.
Sounds so great…peaceful…My lil’ Tiger has been on me since before 6 am…but now the slug has gone back to finish her sleep.
Wow…I should be in North Florida
I get the pre-cooked, ready to eat bacon and place on foil and toast medium or less –should watch it– drain on paper towel. No mess and always ready when I am. Can be done while buttering toast –it’s that quick.
karen
I am so enjoying relating to you all this morning. I have a little personal diary I do online when the spirit moves me. I call it “Morning Worship” in honor of Sweet Alex my Burmese who every morning leads worship at the altar we call computer screen. Many head butts and purrs.
I can’t count the hours of pleasure I have had from CCC projects through the years. Most of my cousins were in it before they volunteered for the Army. Has anyone else noticed how much longing and I think need, there is now for similar “beautification programs?” It seems to me so much around us is now just plain ugly and “sleazey.” I do think Roosevelt understood better the creative, the spiritual needs of the people. The worship of money just doesn’t cut it for most of us.
I love any type of tea, but the chai latte is my favorite…the cookies would be a nice touch, though. Some homeade chocolate chip or oatmeal would really hit the spot!
Anti-immigration rallys in Arizona, Minneapolis, etc etc etc…..Beyond belief.
Good morning! Journaling is so therapeautic and so enlightening when you can go back and look at prior entries to see how things were for you in the past.
I have tried that before when I want something quick and easy. Today I actually want to get out the frying pan and go to work!
me too. having spent the last few months completely absorbed in this fight, have felt almost aimless this past week. can’t even imagine what it must be like for warriors like you, Jane, and Slink to now sit and watch.
What I wouldn’t give for a couple of my sister’s homemade chocolate chip cookies … *sigh*
When people realize that if they would focus on the good or the “beautiful” instead of the ugly it would help their focus and attitute tremendously…it really does make you a happier person.
The progressive Errington Thompson show is now. Streaming at http://www.880therevolution.com. My guest is Alex Koppleman of the War Room on Salon.com.
5:30 Kismet was howling for breakfast. I just turned over and she lay down and went back to sleep. Surprise, surprise.
I should have added that yesterday I received the 2nd and 3rd albums by HuDost, who I first heard last Saturday. Couldn’t read for paying attention to a different sound. I’m hooked. I really like a strong female vocalist.
OK, now I’m really hungry…lol
Homemade peanut butter cookies. Storebought, if ya can find ‘em, suck.
I hear you. It’s blatant. And ignored.
YEs, they have a thyroid support it is produced by Natra Bio and you can find it online if you can’t find it there. I, personally love the adrenal support for mu own self as I have considerable stress from pain…physical, emotional and mental…which was greatly relieved this morning!
Time
time wounds all heals , or something like that
1 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1 cup sugar (1/2 white, 1/2 brown)
7-12 min in 350 oven
Bam!
No kidding. It takes a deep commitment to finally acknowledge that there really IS something greater than ourselves!
I’ve been praying for these things to be removed from me and today it happened. Like WHAM! in the kisser!
hey bacon fans,
this being Texas an all, the current rage is chicken-fried chipotle bacon
Folks like you make the world a better place!
Thank You !
Here in Northeast Florida, the cool and crisp mornings, the aire of changing seasons, the early morning newspaper, a hot cuppa coffee, the daily walk with my jack russell and the appreciation of my family and all the joys (and woes) attached to it.
I’m not a fan of peanut butter, but I have found an occasional peanut butter cookie that wasn’t bad with a glass of cold milk.
That’s not a cookie, that’s a bomb. *g* I remember you posting that some time ago. I guess I’d best get off my duff and make ‘em. Can’t get the tigers to answer the damn phone, much less cook.
god bless you and all you do.
did you happen to catch what’s up for today’s Book Salon ?
(Wo)man cannot live by bread alone, must have peanut butter.
I’ve been there…there is nothing like it
Hmmm…wouldn’t mind trying it.
I have a Jack Russell too. Nearly 8 but still a pup.
Nice list…family does bring both, don’t they? Gotta love ‘em.
Good Morning, DeVeria,
The best moments are the “little” ones.
I used to look forward to cooler weather when my Sammy (kitty) was alive. I would sit in the recliner with a fleece blanket and she would hop into my lap…sometimes for hours. I would hate to get up and disturb the peaceful moment.
I have a wonderful view of the sunrise in the mornings. It’s beautiful in each season, but is especially inspiring when the trees have lost their leaves and the orange sky is highlighted behind their dark, overlapping branches. Several of the trees have bowed branches that intersect and resemble a church window.
I get a kick out of little ones, with eyes still full of wonder, asking questions about their “new” discoveries of this old world. Heck, I get a kick out of my kids, who are young adults, making discoveries of life and finding their place in it.
I think about some of my mother’s treats, with longing for home, I guess, the taste and the atmosphere of being around my mother. Thanks for the thought.
ewwwww. I’m mostly Swedish. More of a rice pudding gal.
I’ll have to remember that…lol
Hi DeVeria and chair puller-upper puppers ..
I just like standing on my tiny front porch and looking at the birds and sky and trees. Anything not man-made refreshes my soul.
Trash I like: picking up the Enquirer on a Saturday morning at the drug store. It’s comfort trash with no calories, just a few brain cells probably lost ..
Here is a sweet website I drop in on – 1000 Awesome Things
http://1000awesomethings.com/
Good weekend to all ..
Funny how Angela can go right back to bed/sleep….no, I can’t. But she is less fierce about pawing my face. Looks like yours has caught on.
Sounds beautiful. Now, that would be a nice moment for me…so relaxing.
Geez ,I don’t know why ,but I sure am hungry !
Hi…I’m gonna have to check out the website.
Thank you….I had been very curious….Do you need to key it to any sort of blood work?
Where do you find that? Im clueless….& a TXan
We’ve only been talking about food all morning! I guess that’s one of the little things too, huh?
Well, of course, there are no test for adrenal insufficiency, as the docs don’t understand it so ..it doesn’t exist, or can’t be important, you know.
But if I suspected I had a thyroid problem and the tests still put me in the “normal” range, I’d go get some anyway. There’s nothing in the stuff that can hurt you unlike pharmaceuticals.
It’s really homeopathy and just gives minute dosages.
Barbara….good Morning…missing you around here. I guess we both have odd schedules. I heard this morning about anti-immigrants demo. in your area today….Are you hearing anything?
Seven grain hot cereal, add maple syrup and milk to taste, whole wheat toast, butter, honey. Do I have a sweet tooth? Why, yes, yes I do.
DeVeria ,thanks for bringing us all together this morning, I hope you have a great day !
I’ve got to roll on , a great day to all
Thanks alot….I had understood there is some sub-group of docs who do much more in-depth thyroid testing, but I haven’t heard of one locally. Many thanks….and good luck on your own getting along well.
You too! I’m off in a few hours to go get my godson and spend some quality time with him. Can’t work all the time!
Adrenal and thyroid issues go hand in hand. It’s a puzzle to figure out that not a lot of doctors are keen on figuring out. You mention “adrenal insufficiency” and supplementing cortisol, and they go running, screaming from the room. “Noooo, you can’t treat the adrenals! They’ll die!” Okay, I’m being funny, but many docs will not treat the adrenals even though patients are presenting with adrenal issues. The trick is not to over treat, as in too much of a good thing, because it will put the adrenals to sleep, so to speak.
And one affects the other–the most important thing to remember is that adrenal insufficiency needs to be addressed FIRST before thyroid issues are addressed. If you don’t do this, your already stressed adrenals will go into a nose-dive. Take it from someone who’s been there, done that.
There’s nothing wrong with having a sweet tooth…I have a couple!
Enjoy your day, DeVeria.
Now I’m a big fan of bacon and I fry up pretty good chicken AND chicken fried steak (and pork chops as far as that goes) but I’ve got to admit, I just don’t think I could really deal with chicken fried bacon that readily.
coupla places out here in the exurbs, heard about it through customers – bet you’d find a local outlet with the google …”chicken-friend bacon – austin american statesman”
goes some distance in explaining the diabetes/obesity epidemic
I had out of town family visiting last week. It was interesting that a recurring theme of conversation was aesthetics and their role in human evolution and everyday life Keats had it right.
Rashad and I are planning to have a blast…you too
I’m trying to imagine that myself…
yes
This woman talks a lot in this book about addressing adrenal/thyroid issues with homeopathy
Speaking of tea, ever seen one of these? A less expensive gai wan can be had at most Asian food stores. I use a smaller gai wan for drinking.
No and I will probably be on the road home when this important discussion begins. Please give the author my regards and let them him/her know your firepups ARE out there working our butts off, but it is a jungle out here! I am not sure if our legislature are snarling wolves or saintly angels, but I suspect they are a little bit of both!

I am so new I find it hard to catch the rhythm of conversation but enjoy the spirit that I see behind most of the posting. Forgive the intrusion for a question. How can I be able to read your all’s profiles? I know some are reading mine and welcome. But for the life of me I don’t see how I can access others. Do I have to have a higher level of participation set on the blog?
thanks
That is nice…I’m gonna have to find a few of those.
When you say profiles, do you mean the link at your name? Not everyone takes advantage of that.
No I have my profile online at that link.
My question is: Is there a link to other members’ profiles?
I recommend the books about this topic written by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein – “The Schwarzbein Principle” and TSP II and also “The Program” plus she has a cook book. These books address the way the body works with the nutrients we eat in addition to the way all the balances of the body are influenced by our diet. She also spends a lot of time addressing appropriate hormone therapy if needed. She is an endocrinologist and has put a huge amount of time and study on this topic. The best info this retired health and pe teacher has ever found.
No, I don’t think so.
Edit: If you add biographical info in your profile –
She recommends Dr. Schwarzbein’s book and I think writes an intro.
Thanks…..
I’ve not heard of a profile thingy. I’ve gotten to know my friends here over years of chatting and asking questions.
For example, DeVeria, you say in your post, I am learning that in my old age. Hon, you don’t look older than your 30’s! So, spill it.
I heard that the average age of a pupper is mid to late 50’s. That was a few years ago, so it could have changed, as we have a little bit of a different crowd these days.
Thanks. I think I have solved it. When you go to profiles you can go from the info page to dashboard. Dashboard shows recent posting. Click the author’s name and -if he/she has filled out a profile with personal web page you are sent to that. It seems you can’t actualy read the profile but can go to authors’ outside websites.
There’s also an About Us page
Thanks demi. See my post to Elliott. I will just hang loose and enjoy you all and ask questions.
I am in my latter thirties…
Sounds great…we have a great time here
Hey Demi….Good Morning Beautiful day….I am way into Don’t Ask…..
Did and cool. I think I have gotten most of my personal info from the early morning and late night posts. That’s when we share our juice. And, mostly it comes in dribs and drabs of sharing. I’m glad you’ve come to the Lake. I find your comments intelligent and thoughtful.
One of the things I especially about this community is how we each bring a different personality here. Some come to just get things off their chests. Others have such vast knowledge of issues at hand and share educational links. As Jane once said, we each contribute in our own ways.
I know that ladies aren’t supposed to say their age, but, dammit, we’re foul-mouthed dfh’s! Ha! I don’t usually ask someone outright. It just comes out in the context of stories shared, don’t you think?
I don’t need to ask your age. But, I feel like I’ve gotten to know you through our chats.
We’re as old or young as we feel. Damn, girl, I wasn’t finished having babies at your age!
Before I go, the little thing that made me happy yesterday was picking the first leaves of lettuce from my garden. I put them on some sandwiches. I’m trying to leave as much as possible to keep growing. Next week, a salad. *g*
I haven’t even started yet! I just want one though…I have Rashad
sounds good…I haven’t heard of a garden since my grandparents had one
You’re a treasure, my dear. Lord, I need to start this day.
You are so kind demi. Thanks. And I find your and the quality and tone of posts here awesome.
I have and do a lot of my own web sites and blogged a good bit for many years. I have to say this is the first place, since some of the old Compuserve forums, that really feels like home.
As are you, hon. I left you a note at the next thread, re: tomorrow’s sermon.
Oh, I think there are more than several here who have them. You don’t even need much space to put one in. A patio or even a window box or sill will work. Christy had brought up the idea when our country started it’s er, um Downturn.
We’ve spent many a Saturday PUAC threads sharing and asking questions. It’s been very educational and inspiring.
Had one at 30, 35 and 42. You’ve got time. Get that leg better first is my only suggestion. Once Rashad starts running around, you’ll know what I’m saying. *g*
Exactly!
