I never thought I would have to admit this, but Glenn Beck totally nailed it when he said that Obama is a racist with a deep-seated hatred of white people and/or white culture. He’s done a pretty good job of covering it up so far, but his judicial nominees expose him for what he really is:
Dave Weigel reports that the conservative Committee for Justice is complaining in the aftermath of the nomination of one Latino and one African American to the federal bench, that President Obama’s judicial nominees aren’t diverse enough because there aren’t enough southern white men among them.
Does President Obama or his advisors believe that southern white men are likely to be bigoted, making them unfit to serve on the second most powerful court in the land? We hope not and readily concede that it is difficult to know if any such stereotype lurks in the White House….
(…)
Just to put this in perspective, a whopping 18 percent of judges on the federal bench are people of color. But in the eyes of this conservative group, assigning more white men to the federal bench “transcends racial divisions,” and that doing otherwise reflects a selection process “dominated by racial and gender preferences.”
So, to sum up, nominating two people of color (three, if you count Sotomayor) to an institution that is 82% white is stone-cold racist. Just imagine the crushing blow to diversity if that number were to dip down to, say, 75%.
That may be a little unfair. The CFJ isn’t talking about the federal judiciary as a whole, they’re talking specifically about the Southern Appeals courts, where there is a large pool of Southern white males that Obama is presumably snubbing because of Teh Racism. Those courts probably have a lot more minorities on them already because the South has such a high minority population, right? The CFJ specifically refers to the Appeals Courts for the Fourth, the Fifth, and the Eleventh Circuits, so I did some quick digging and counting at the Federal Judiciary’s website. Result: 87% white, 5% Latino, 8% African American.
Wow. Apparently the CFR thinks that 87% just isn’t white enough, even in a region with a 30% minority population, because they seem so offended by any attempt to whittle that number down. Me, I’m trying to remember the last time I looked at a powerful, influential organization and thought, “You know what they need? More white guys!”

Eli !
Jayt!
President Obama’s judicial nominees aren’t diverse enough because there aren’t enough southern white men among them.
Maybe Jeff Sessions is still interested?
Maybe the Senate still ain’t.
One of the pieces of “evidence” the CFJ harps on is the Democrats’ opposition to Dubya’s Southern white guy nominees on the grounds of racism/sexism/homophobia, and how that perpetuated the stereotype of the bigoted white Southerner. But they never acknowledged the possibility that maybe Dubya’s nominees actually *were* bigoted white Southerners.
No, Bush would never do such a thing. No, no, no, no. Yes.
O thank you, thank you. We needed alittle stupid white guy humor…Perfect.
But they never acknowledged the possibility that maybe Dubya’s nominees actually *were* bigoted white Southerners.
But, seriously, enough about Jeff Sessions.
As a stupid white guy myself, I consider myself eminently qualified.
With a great sense of humor….thanks again. The Moyers war film is very bleak.
Leave Beauregard alone !
Hey I resemble that remark!
The Moyers war film…
Which, thanks to my local PBS station, I will get the chance to see at 2:00 A.M. tonight.
Moyers, and Indianapolis, well – not a happy mix.
For some reason, this post got me thinking about a big fight, okay a verbal disagreement, I had at the dinner table with my father when I was in college. I was telling him that we were racists because we live in a racist society. Got really in to it. NAACP. Lots of other stuff.
I was also thinking about my Pop yesterday during the coverage of Ft. Hood. An Army recruiter had come to the school and I had brought home flyers and pamphlets and he had a fit. No! You’re not joining anything. You’re going to college. And, then I did and brought all these high falootin ideas home. Oh, brother.
I would, if he would just. go. away.
guy makes my skin crawl.
Passing you the aloe vera cream.
Hi jayt. Hug your boy for me to. Loves me some of those Indiana raised guys! (speaking of my poppy.)
How long is our country just going to shoot up other people? The movie sounds make my cat jump….look how much sense she’s got. Jeeez
Hmmm, I don’t hear women screaming for 51%+ women judges. Of course, we’d be saying, “Women; race/color/sexual orientation not important.”
will do. I can hardly express how glad i was yesterday to know that he was here, safely home on leave, rather than on post.
Otherwise, I would either have been one severe basket case, or a last-minute passenger on a plane to Killeen.
Now where’s that little DavidByron guy to do his ranty-dance?
Too close….thank goodness.
FWIW, Obama nominated 3 or 4 women to those Southern courts as well, and the CFJ wasn’t happy about that either. Anything other than a Southern white male they considered dangerously bias-y.
(overall percent of women on the courts is around 25%, for the Southern appeals courts and the federal courts overall)
I want you to know that I, along with your other friends, was right with you yesterday, when you posted that.
((jayt and son))
With this digital age, and our ability to see slide shows with photos of people’s grief striken faces, whether it’s here or Over There, at tragic events, we have the opportunity to be one.
Gawd, I’m getting maudilen on a Friday night. Sorry.
Shhhhh….he has been quiet during the last few days. Let’s keep it that way. okay? :)
Yeah, I do find myself surrounded by (older) white male angst. Fortunately I don’t see it so much in the 40 and unders. And thanks for the information on female judges; I didn’t know there were as many as that.
heh. Plus, it might put me in danger of being banned forever….
Never! And, thanks, again, for standing up to that guy for us. That was before we knew to just Stay Away, Sit On Yer Hands, Ignore, Scroll. I’ve learned, now and am able to just turn the other cheek.
Still, that was a rough thread and your being there made me feel better.
It did, and I thank ya!
PS…love, your friend, the idiot. *g*
we are lesion!
“It’s the poor that fight these wars….”
You know, I was thinking the Detroit Pistons could use another Bill Laimbeer…
I can think of a bunch of white guys I’d like to see added to the docket at the Hague, but that’s not exactly what you’d call a powerful & influential organization.
(To be fair, I can think of a few people of color I’d like to see there as well – I guess I just can’t help myself)
…I was thinking the Detroit Pistons could use another Bill Laimbeer…
blergh. Isn’t he off somewhere coaching women’s ball, and teaching them how to be thugs like him?
Diversity is good….
Bill Laimbeer belongs on the bench.
heh. Rachel is talking about the coal industry’s putting out a coal-inspired coloring-book.
Seems to me that that would require only one crayon, but what do I know?
Missed that. Jayt, is your son at Ft. Hood???
Moyers has a “Good Soldier” link on his website…For a while, I thought I would quit watching. The characters/men are very interesting.
yes – normally. But he came home on leave the day before the shootings.
South Bend gets Bill Moyers on SATURDAY night. Kwitcher whining! *G*
well yes – Indianapolis is very progressive, ya know.
ahem. Also.
Ah, ha! You are a racist, too! ((Eli))
Thank all that’s good. What a nightmare.
Hell, I used to live in Cincinnati. Talk about progressive. Not.
The south needs more white judges? About like Wall Street needs more N1H1 vaccine.
And more white guys!
Probably, at least the last time I bothered to look. But we could use a dose of drama here, something to lift the unending horror that is life in Michigan and the Second Great Depression.
Even if it’s a brute like Laimbeer.
good music town, though.
Or at least it was back when I was in college – lotta good clubs.
And what was the radio station that used to annually broadcast the Fool’s Day Parade? WEBN?
For some reason, I always looked forward to the Our Lady of Perpetual Motion Marching Band.
Even if it’s a brute like Laimbeer.
yeah – I’m not really mad at him – the NBA was more interesting back in those days. Blood was merely a temporary nuisance – not a reason for a ten-game suspension.
And Laimbeer did bring blood and guts – but mostly blood.
20/20, pretty good piece on Ft. Hood….
At least two. You need some grays for highlights.
(I got a lump of coal for Christmas one year. It was tagged as a ‘DIY Diamond Kit’.)
Like Federal Judge James Moody of the US District Court in Tampa, of the Dr Sami Al-Arian shame.
Reindeer? Lame Deer? Where?
Been thinking about you….don’t you get Moyers about now? I was wondering about how you may react to his film.
How are you?
Heh. By the way, it’s bow season for deer here. One more week to statewide holiday known as firearm season, during which one million volunteers deploy with their choice of legally-approved munitions into the state’s woods and fields to take on the deadly nuisance known as “un-dead road kill.”
There’s another group of powerful, influential white guys in need of some diversity for you…Michigan deer hunters.
the deer population has long been in need of a Rambo-type leader, imo.
Arm the deer!
Rambi?
LOL.
Yeah, went over to the site but decided I’m gonna put that off for a day or two. Gets a little rough around the edges at times.
Rayne
When I lived in Imnaha, summer home of the Nez Perce, we used to have to drag the bow hunters out after they’d been snake bit. Rattlesnake capital of the world and these fools don’t have sense enough not to lean on a fallen tree before lookin’. Never lost one but sure scared the hell out of them.
Wouldn’t be nearly so many deer hunters if the deer shot back.
cows
You know as an older white male Vulcan I’m upset that I haven’t benefited enough from the white male policies. And I’m going to do something about it.
Hey yesterday I tried to get Glenn Beck in trouble with the financial poobahs at the News Corp. What I want News Corp to say is “Yes we are losing 2.4 million dollars a month on Glenn Beck but we are making it up in VOLUME!”
(see because he yells.)
Seriously, I’ve started working with Color of Change so that they can push my techniques to the next level because I’m getting pretty pissed off that Glenn Beck can use his Bully Pulpit to just defame people and pick the off like McCarthy. Does this piss anyone else off that he can just target people left and right? I think the only way to stop it is for someone to sue his ass for defamation. And they will have to meet the “actual malice” standards even if they aren’t a journalists and they are not really a “press entity” (a legal term used by the FEC)
Hah!
That is why MAN is the deadly is game! (Oh, wouldn’t that make a great episode of a TV show? I bet I’m the first one to ever think of that!)
Definitely rough….gets better later in. You still may not want to watch it….
Da utuub is doun fer miantnance.
Rambi III: This time it’s personal.
Rambi III: He’s in town with a few days to kill.
Rambi III: “My name is Rambi. You are the man who killed my mother, prepare to die.”
Well yes. And it pisses me off that this ridiculous lunatic has a platform to spout nonstop paranoid nonsense to millions of people who lap it up like it’s Secret Insight Into The Ways Of The World.
Oh, I didn’t even click on any segment. Shoulda left the “gets” off my 2nd sentence.
…even if they aren’t a journalists and they are not really a “press entity” (a legal term used by the FEC)
am I misremembering or didn’t Fox win a case precisely on that basis? (that they were *not* a news organization)?
in Florida maybe?
And “mean” Laura Ingraham is opining that people who do not like this country should leave it….she’s forgotten about free speech. What a pair.
I like this country just fine. I just don’t like what the Bush administration and the Republicans (and a lot of the Democrats) have done to it.
“Leave the country,” “get a job.” People yell at us from cars. I call ‘em Road Scholars.
Eli I’ve been thinking of other steps to stop him, or punish FOX further.
I often look to history to see what were the techniques and methods of stopping other demigods. One thing that do is to figure out who supports him and why and then take away those reasons.
When I go after the hosts at K S F O and contact the advertises I also look for comments that the host make that attack the advertisers. This is especially annoying for the management. Beck has lost 81 advertisers so now I want to look at his management and see what things that they care about. That is why I’m focusing on the money.
I also am thinking about how to tie the crazy people directly to Beck so that when one of them does something crazy Beck gets financially tared with their acts.
I think she means we should all shut up…she loves to rant about Obama not liking America
if enough people do not like Laura Ingraham, does that also mean that *she* should leave the country?
If so, I say we take a vote.
Tying the crazy people to Beck is probably your best bet. Fox *loves* what he’s doing, and the prestige of the teabag rallies and czar scalps. I don’t think the money is all that big a deal to Murdoch.
But…but…then we wouldn’t get to see what she looks like after she’s had as many cosmetic surgeries as Joan Rivers. Hi, I’m Laura Sardonicus.
Tying the crazy people to Beck is probably your best bet.
I have the ugly feeling that something is gonna happen pretty damned soon which will make that real easy.
Let’s have a vote….
Unfortunately, the next right-wing media star who suffers
massiveany consequences for one of their fans going on a killing spree will be the first. We wouldn’t have Beck if there had been a first.
A big part of their lament is “I want my country back…” That is so weird as it is their folks who have wrecked so much…What part do they want back?
Fuck them, I want *my* country back.
jayt: What happened in that case what that the judge ruled that they didn’t have to tell the truth. That they could lie. (This was featured in the movie Outfoxed and in Moore’s film)
The FEC deal is more narrow. I was working this angle for K S F O and in my research I found out that during the run up to federal elections the most right wingest of hosts get “press exemptions” and the most wacky radio station is considered a “press entity” This is done so that the radio station giving time to candidates aren’t considered donations.
So that means that Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are all considered “the Press” during the 30 days prior to a federal election.
I found this out when I did my research on federal election law after hearing K S F O giving 10-20 minute infomercials to David Harmer who was running in the 10th congressional district in California. (He lost to Democrat John Garamendi) I felt that these infomercials should be seen as a donation. In research I found out this loophole that the right wing radio stations are using to donate hours of free time to their right wing candidates. I worked the issue and contacted three scholars two lawyers and two groups that do this kind of work they kept saying to wait until we find out how the Citizens United case at the Supreme court works out.
I can’t do this myself and I need a home that has the resources to keep pushing this. But I want to share what I did here so people can see my thinking and ofter thoughts help or suggestions.
Exactly….They really don’t “get” how much they have wrecked, I think
What part do they want back?
Well, the Civil War was a bit of a setback….
there’s something similar in the rules about campaign donations in the last 30 days.
unfortunately, i did the research so long ago that I don’t feel able to speak intelligently about it right now.
You’re doing yeoman’s work, spocko.
Bless ya, and fuck ‘em.
(what – is there something wrong with that sentence?)
on edit: what I meant was that there’s something which changes with the 501(c)(4)’s.
Yep, someone to tote those bales….And all these immigrants…Saw someone today saying how they better not get one cent of medical care. I guess we can figure this out..Thanks
It won’t fly as a benediction.
I’ll work on it. *g*
Exactly.
I remind people about the impact that Carol Burnett had on The National Enquirer.
One thing that the work showing that Fox is not a “press entity” that their hosts are NOT journalists and they should not get the “press exemption” are doing is putting FOX outside of the media protective bubble.
Sure they will keep using it and sure their lawyers will try and say that the standard for defamation should be as high for Glenn Beck and Fox as for the New York Times, but my feeling is that EVEN if Fox is tried using the New York Times v. Sullivan standard of “actual malice” in some case they will Lose. Just like Fox lost the Bono swearing case.
The rest of the media will treat Fox like they are one of them, (like they did recently with Obama and Fox) but the general public is getting the idea that Fox is different. Even with the slogan they are NOT journalists.
I think the time has come for a massive defamation case. What bothers me is that all the people who are so quick to defend Fox and the host. I think the reason was stated very clearly yesterday by Rupert Murdock in his Q1 conference call. “They think that they might be next.”
The media HATE defamation cases. That is why they have developed conventions like “allegedly” and do the stenography stuff, but Fox doesn’t do that. Fox is counting on the fact that they usually attack people who are public figures and won’t sue. They are counting on the fact that they will be held to the same standard as the New York Times.
One of the ways to get the media to support a defamation case is for the Fox people to be sued by a journalist at the New York Times.
Fox is counting on the fact that they usually attack people who are public figures and won’t sue.
I don’t watch fox so I honestly don’t know.
Have they been going after Alan Grayson?
Gregg Levine is upstairs!
Late Night: Bachmann Terror Overdrive
Peace…all my local news is about Ft Hood. Seen enough.
A good part of the story is about the woman officer who took down the shooter. A genuine hero and getting wide praise…still in the hospital. What a week.
Good night
Yeah. I can’t believe Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et. al. are just taking this with no fight back.
Hopefully, something’s coming tomorrow. *dream?*
night, Rev. Always a pleasure.
So clever, SD!!!
Yeah. I don’t think Grayson is the one who will sue although he has the money. I actually contacted a LGBT group to see if they would support Kevin Jennings in a defamation case. I was told he didn’t have good “optics” for a case. Sigh.
I don’t remember WEBN, but maybe it was. I remember the fireworks on the river, simulcast with music on TV. Cincinnati is very conservative but it really was a great place to live. Pretty surroundings, decent weather, great activities at the river, a great classical music station. I worked at UC for 3 years.
Gives a whole new meaning to the words CRACKER BARREL! This Grand Wizard of an organization should remove the sheets and pillow cases from their heads and take a good look around this country. The shrinkage their experiencing isn’t just between their legs!
