Michele Bachmann and her crazy mob of Teabaggers have invaded the Hill today.
Thousands of opponents of the Democrats’ health care legislation are gathered outside the Capitol, for a noon news conference and rally led by Representative Michele Bachmann, Republican of Minnesota, and the chants are already underway, echoing across the Mall.
“Kill the bill!” they are shouting. “Kill the bill!”
It seems some got a little carried away.
Capitol Police arrested nine protesters Thursday morning in the Hart Senate Office Building.
The protesters were arrested about 10 a.m. in the office of Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and were charged with unlawful entry, a Capitol Police spokeswoman said.
And as usual, the rhetoric of the Teabaggers is extra classy.
Among the signs displayed at the rally was one demanding “Waterboard Congress” and another that said, “Vote no to government-run health care.”
As for Bachmann, she called for Teabaggers to storm the halls of the Capitol.
“I’d love to have every one of your viewers join me so that we can go up and down through the halls, find members of Congress, look at the whites of their eyes and say, ‘Don’t take away my health care.’ “
Steve Benen notes the significance of today’s date.
This afternoon — November 5 — a date widely known as Guy Fawkes Night. (You know, “Remember, remember, the fifth of November.”) In other words, Bachmann wants to rally right-wing activists, label them an “insurgency,” and encourage them to roam the halls of Congress deliberately “scaring” members of Congress, on the infamous date that marks an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
Added a Teabagger,
“Palin/Bachmann 2012,” came a shout from the crowd.
Perfect.

Like my dad used to say, “Spare me.”
Hope she doesn’t cut herself with the katana.
Maybe we should alter that image to say “Kill the Poor” since that’s really what she seems to be after.
I really think Wall Street should start a futures market for teh crazy. Bachmann is way up today, but Palin’s book tour starts in two weeks. I see both trending upward…
If they actually put those arrested in the DC slammer for a short period of time they just might run into some folks who disagree with their assessment of health care reform.
Teabaggers: We must be freed from this oppressive access to healthcare!

Luke Russert characterized the crowd as “passionate”
I hope she is able to kill the bill because it’s a horrible bill. If the Congress decides that everyone in this country should have health insurance (not health CARE, mind you) they should use the progressive tax system to either provide it directly to the citizens or give everyone a voucher to purchase the policy of their choice, if we are to keep our disfunctional private system. The mandate is a tax burden on the poor and middle class. If these bills in Congress go through, perhaps “mandates” will eventually replace the progressive tax code.
“Palin/Bachmann 2012,” came a shout from the crowd.
Good lord – how would their supporters ever find the rallies?
I mean, it could involve maps, reading a newspaper, or other such complicated stuff.
Some Code Pinkers arrested at Lieberman’s office too, per TPM.
http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/11/eight-universal-health-care-supporters-arrested-at-liebermans-office.php
er, what if it is a terrible bill, that mandates the purchase of crappy insurance policies and further enriches the greedy, amoral insurance cartel?
If it were us at the Capitol he’d be calling us “radicals” and saying we’re tearing the building apart.
Intelligence default swaps.
Luke Russert characterized the crowd as “passionate”
Luke’s a serious tool.
The nut didn’t fall far from the tree. Or something.
If it is I believe our intention is to push to vote it down. No bill is better than a bad bill.
As Oliver Willis also noted, remember how pissed off the right was when “V for Vendetta” came out?
er, what if it is a terrible bill, that mandates the purchase of crappy insurance policies and further enriches the greedy, amoral insurance cartel?
Then Ms. Bachmann would be *for* it.
good litmus test.
Passionate is fair. They are passionate. He just omitted the ignorant and batcrap crazy that goes hand in hand with the passionate part.
remember how pissed off the right was when “V for Vendetta” came out?
no. You mean they noticed? And made the obvious association? all by themselves?
I’d even say they have passionate intensity.
Is she really crazy? Or, did she stay at Holiday Inn Express last night?
I saw a banner ad for that the other day. Isn’t that a rehash of something that came out in the 80s? Attractive lady with a cat’s eye, too. I could go for that.
surprisingly, yes. There was much consternation and tut-tutting from Wingnuttia because the movie “glorified terrorism”.
the Dumb Pouter Plot ?
Remember, remember the Fifth of November.
I’ve got no problem with that.
I also have no choice.
But they really don’t understand why. These baggers haven’t dealt in facts for a long time.
“Thousands“? Were there actually “thousands” there in the “crowds”?
If so, we’ll NEVER hear the end of that on the MSM.
Lunacy on display
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/05/holocaust-sign/
Kill the Bill.
Is Bachmann only useful for corralling progressives to support this terrible bill?
MSNBC reported Cap Police est 3,000 – 3,500
KO will probably mention that tonight. There is a violent streak in Bachmann’s psychology.
so you define your political orientation as simply being for what Teabaggers are against, and vice-versa?
kind of gives them the upper hand, doesn’t it, and puts you in a bind when Teabaggers oppose vast giveaways to the Wall Street oligarchs who crashed the economy.
and anyway, by all indications it will be a terrible bill, irrespective of what Ms. Bachmann thinks of it.
have you heard about how the House version allows funding for CHIP to run out? Thanks Democrats, the Rebublicans could never have gotten away with that!
V for Vendetta came out in about 2005.
Kill Bill around 2003.
Maybe this thing (don’t know what to call it) at the Capitol today is a good thing. Some of these Blue Dogs, New Democrats, etc. will get a good look at the loonies they are supporting. I think it’s going to make some Republicans cringe.
Yesterday I wrote the News Corp financial analysts and asked:
What’s News Corp’s ROI When Someone is Shot at a Tea Party?
I think that this question needs to be asked. Who will financially pay when someone is shot at a Fox News sponsored Tea party? What about a Michelle Bachmann sponsored Tea Party?
I don’t care about who will be arrested, that will of course be the individual, but what about the financial liability of the politician or corporation who organizes this?
The legal issue will get tied up with issues of right to assemble and free speech, but in America today it is all about the financial.
I told the financial analysts that last week the family of a woman who died in a water drinking contest sponsored by a radio station was awarded 16.6 million dollars. Entercom, the radio station parent, said that the woman was responsible, they weren’t. The jury decided otherwise.
I want to make sure that we and the MSM keep tying Fox News to these tea parties. They want the credit, when the death comes they need to get the blame and pay the financial price.Massive financial penalty? Loss of broadcast license for abuse of the airwaves?
They got away with sponsoring and suggesting the murder of Dr. Killer. This event is tied even more closely to them.
If Michelle Bachmann or Fox News convinces someone to kill a politician killed will the killer, like Oswald, scream, “I’m a patsy!” or “I’m a patriot!”? Will the footage of the shooting include Bachmanns earlier calls to ‘wait till you see the whites of their eyes”?.
Nah. It’s all about personal responsibility with the right wing media. People act in a vacuum.
Shut these idiots up and just extend Medicare benefits to all. Jeebus.
And how, exactly, are the idiots in Code Pink much different from Bachman and her crazies?
Some around here love Code Pink. I think they’re just Palin/Bachman-ites in pastel.
First there was denial, now there’s anger. I can’t wait for the bargaining to begin. More popcorn, please.
That’s why they are the worst.
bet they don’t cringe publicly. up till a few days ago, Repub leadership gave tepid endorsement to the deal – today they’re out there sharing Bachmann’s spotlight – don’t know whether the Koch’s kicked down some extra campaign cheddar or they are really stupid enough to get on the NY-23 Crazy Train
Dumb question.
If there is an actual successful reform of the health care industry, wouldn’t that pretty much end the need for CHIP? After all, isn’t one of the hallmarks of what we are all pushing for universal access to healthcare?
It seems that if a GOOD bill can be written and put out there then the CHIP program would no longer be necessary as a stand alone component.
Which obviously means we need to make sure the end bill is a good one that does cover everyone.
Glad to see you are working that angle. Money means something to them where good ethics do not.
Always nice to see the narcissistic left here pushing for their magical ponies. They are every bit as delusional as Michele Bachmann.
How about stopping all these giveaways and cutting our taxes? Might work better, dontcha’ think?
Michelle told them to “storm the Capitol.” Seems a little inflammatory to me. What if one of baggers gets hurt – falls down, etc. – do the taxpayers have to pay? So many unfortunate things could happen.
Actually, most of us are still in the laughing stage.
a diary about that
unclear. although I tend to go with Wright Edelman
I disagree.
CodePink Women for Peace
“Palin/Bachmann 2012,” came a shout from the crowd.
Please, please, please, let it be true!
Back to work.
Namaste
Palin/Bachmann 2012
Why I’m still in the laughing stage, Exhibit A.
Thanks.
I remind people that ABC/Citadel/Disney wasn’t going to fire anyone at KSFO because of the money they lost DURING the time of the controversy. I didn’t either because they they would be martyrs. I did NOT want them to be the victims in this narrative, especially since it was MY voice that was silenced when they had my blog shut down. So I backed off. Then when the final bill came in and the parent company saw that they weren’t going to recoup the money they lost they fired Melanie Morgan. They didn’t want a wrongful termination lawsuit so they waited until her contract was up. They also said that it was because of slow advertising across the board. If you read the Citadel financial documents you will see that they said that they lost money in San Francisco. There are only two stations in San Francisco. KSFO and KGO and KGO wasn’t losing money.
Did the baggers bring their weapons this time?
Yeah, tax cuts really work when you’re unemployed and have no health insurance or have a pre-exisitng condition.
But thanks for playing.
I would also agree with her and understand her concerns but it does seem to me (as a potential idiot) that if the final bill can be such that we can accept, there should not be a continued need for CHIP.
But I’m willing to be convinced by smarter people.
Good Question. Maybe we should ask them why they didn’t. “Are you afraid Obama will take your guns? Wow. You really are a pussy. What are you afraid of? You have a second amendment right don’t you? Come on’ go get your gun! Don’t let liberals tell you what you can and can’t do!”
Of course you should never taunt crazy people they might do something crazy.
but the bill that ends CHIP is not an “actual successful reform of the health care industry” – what planet are you on?
here on FDL it was called
By Dr. Geyman, and invited frontpager.
and by Matt Tabibi:
that’s what all the busses were for!
Bachmann stood at a podium that promoted the House GOP’ health care plan, declaring “Health Care Freedom.”
Too Funny – Bend over while the insurance companies put it to you and smile if you like it.
Michelle has failed to take her meds for some time now.
Why can Bachman lead ranting and raving loonies through the capital office buildings but protests at conventions are verbotten.
Well for one thing, I have yet to hear of any Code Pink people showing up at town hall meetings packing firearms.
Freedom from badly needed psychiatric medication.
That should be a diary.
And Code Pink is trying to save lives. The Bachman crew will be responsible for the deaths of American citizens if they are successful.
Not to mention photos from Bergen-Belsen.
I’m late to the party.
A+ on the illustration. Michele is scary. Funny, but scary…
uh spork? Asking me what planet I’m on is not conducive to convincing me.
Edit: And I did say the final bill, not necessarily the one you are so up in arms over.
Yeah, one big difference is every right-wing blog in the universe is excitedly linking to the Bachmann story, cheering her on.
Don’t see many left-leaning blogs praising Code Pink.
Has anyone in the MSM thought to ask Bachman if she has bothered to read the bill?
“Palin/Bachmann 2012,” came a shout from the crowd.
This is what Miss Batsh*t Crazy has been angling for all along.
It’s too long for her to take the time to do her job. Haven’t you heard? It’s 1,990 pages long and she (and most of the Rs) just don’t have the time what with organizing tea parties and such.
…every right-wing blog in the universe is excitedly linking to the Bachmann story, cheering her on.
ummm – I’ll take your word on that one.
Per Digby: ten years ago today, Glass Steagel was repealed. Too bad the goddamned idiots are too stoopid to protest that.
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/
Has anyone called for a progressive march?
What Code Pink does is not my style, but they are relentless and certainly agree with stopping the “wars.” I admire their stamina and determination.
Did you have a point that’s germane to the discussion somewhere in that comment? Or are you just an automatic nonsense generator?
Really? Do we daily accuse all Republicans and conservatives of hating their own country, wanting to “take away our freedoms” and “destroy America”, of making up global warming and evolution, of stealing the last election with the help of ACORN and Muslims and George Soros, of wanting to give the terrorists therapy and wanting to turn America into a socialist nightmare where good Christians are forced to have gay abortions?
I must have missed that memo.
Don’t you dare compare us to the sociopathic hypertribalist authoritarians running your Tea Party into the mud. We don’t put party before country; you and yours do. So blow.
Code Pink may be silly, but they haven’t quite hit the offensiveness meter like the GOP Congressional Caucus has:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/11/5/800935/-While-Democrats-were-touting-AARPs-endorsement.
You don’t have to.

cbl2:
Your mission, should you accept it, is to see if Luke Russert is nicer to these “passionate” Congressionally-sponsored teabaggers (with such charming professionally-done and Congressionally-approved signage!) than he is to CodePink or was to, say, Van Jones, Bill Ayers, or Prof. Henry Louis Gates.
Please report back via The Seminal.
That is repulsive and so disrespectful to those who suffered and died in concentration camps. How could they do such a thing – good grief.
I have a good friend who’s father is a Dachau survivor. I can’t even begin to describe how offensive that is. And for the record, I think her father supports health care reform.
Elliott has a fresh cross-post up: “Teabagging Rep. Todd Akin Recites Pledge to “Drive Liberals Crazy,” Then Botches the Words”
I wish the progressives would stop calling protesters crazy. The people that got arrested in Lieberman’s office were not conservatives or Code Pink. They were assorted people who were for single payer.
I want to reserve my right to protest, threaten, bully and scare any worthless politician I want, within the law. You just sound ridiculous when you try to stop free speech, even if you don’t agree with it.
I do hope that this bill gets killed because it will trash SCHIP, forcing it to shed lots of its benefits when transferred to Medicaid. It also trashes Medicare. It forced people to buy a product from a known crooked industry, under threat of the government. It further crushes small businesses and does not remove the noose of having to provide health insurance instead of jobs.
The more people read this bill, the worse it becomes. This is WAY TOO MUCH money for just the measley changes that will happen. And judging by the LACK of success even reforming a financial industry that has just about destroyed us IN FRONT OF OUR VERY EYES, Obama has no one convinced this isn’t more of the same.
Tax dollars should NEVER be given to private industry like this. Use tax dollars to finance actual care, not insurance policies. Obama has worked against single payer, public option, behind the scenes, from the beginning. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lieberman is trying to do him some sort of favor.
To me, that’s beyond the pale.
Cliff from Cheers…there’s an icon for the tea-baggers! A guy who used to go into bars in his Post Office uniform at mid-day and ruminate in a shallow manner about Philosophy. Now it seems that Cliff is the symbol of the “common man”- retired on a government pension, lifetime health care, skipping out on work, and a slacker that complains about “big government”.
Oh wait…he’s an actor…probably a member of the Union and receiving Social Security.
Yeah, whatever.
When I lived in LA a good friend’s dad owned a lot of storefront property on Foothills Blvd, one of which was a clothing and military surplus store. He always had friends who came in to chat. One day an older gentleman came in. It was during the summer and he had a short sleeved short on. That was the first time I had ever seen the tattoo in real life. Hard assed combat vet and it sent chills down my spine.
That pic is really, really offensive.
I also wonder why it is that it is always the liberals that get arrested? I wonder if any of the tea baggers got arrested? Or tased?
Did you read the headline?
Who’s trying to “stop” the protestors? What the hell are you talking about? We’re upset that our fellow Americans are shouting in anger based upon lies and misconceptions and ignorance. Why aren’t you?
We also don’t appreciate being accused of hating our own country and working to destroy it. Frankly, it’s kind to accuse someone who attacks my patriotism of being crazy. The less kind accusation would be to call them scum who deserve to get the crap kicked out of them. Nobody ever accuse me of hating my own country to my face.
Why do you excuse the protestors’ bigotry and ignorance?
I am sure the Luke is a nice kid, but seriously, he is a kid with limited skills and perpetually bad hair. If he was not Tim’s kid, would he EVER be on TV or the radio? Perhaps, he has ability that if developed would be exceptional, but he has not demonstrated any reason for being on the air at this juncture.
Let’s hope that Keith or Rachel, or heavens even the MSM pick this up. This kind of stuff is beyond repulsive, but seems to go unchallenged if it comes from the GOP.
See comments at 48, 62, 65, 66,76 and 79 above.
Take a deep breath…seriously.
Comparing the Holocaust to healthcare reform is crazy. Saying that healthcare reform is a government plot to kill grandma is crazy. Arguing that Obama is a socialist and/or a fascist is so unbelievably ignorant that it defies description. Teabaggers are (mostly well-meaning but pitifully and proudly uniformed) crazies.
And…above link from TPM mentions that those at Lieberman’s office were Code Pinkers.
Our government isn’t just going to be ‘killing’ the poor, they will be making everyone poor with this bill. We will be paying for this ‘insurance’ for four years before it goes into effect. Who’s to say we will just be paying in for ‘insurance’ that will never show up? It wouldn’t be the first time government continues to take our money for something that doesn’t exist. Remember- over 35% of the unisured will still be unisured after this bill goes into effect.
Sorry I’m late. Hey, smells like troll in here!
What are you talking about? They are crazy! Not the ones that want Single Payer Health Care. Those that get Medicare or Social Security out in the Washington Mall screaming Obama is a Nazi – That is CRAZY.
The Left is a disorganized MESS. We can’t even agree on a basic platform and its unfocused. I don’t know why I have to keep saying this. The Right is focused and sings the same tune at all times. The Left is everywhere at once, some focus on the War(s), others focus on Social Justice and others focus on Civil Rights.
No, No, No!
We need to be FOCUSED on one GOAL at a time until its FINISHED. If its Single Payer Health Care, then beat that drum until its LAW, forget about Civil Rights for LGBT for example, they’ve waited this long, they would wait another political cycle. How come there was so much energy placed on Maine’s legalizing of Same Sex Marriages but we can’t even get people to show up in support of Single Payer in Washington? You see what I mean, its unfocused, shows no discipline won’t take on the fire and brimstone theory of the Black Church.
We need the Labor/Union’s Money and the Black Church’s Rhetoric
As MLK once said “Make It Plain”, constant political lingo doesn’t work for a population that largely doesn’t understand how Congress works, why explain it to them in terms only the Hard Core can understand?
This is why we’re talking about a bs-filled “Public Option”, like a blob its undefined and not something MEATY like Single Payer or better yet Medicare For All, which is something a 5 year old can understand.
Until we on the left say we need to focus, focus, focus, its a lost cause.
It seems to me that the best way to show the country that these lunatics are in the minority is for us to show up when they do
When it comes to Michelle Bachman I stand firmly in favor of “[Edited by Moderator. Please no talk of extra violence today (or any day)]“. What an amazingly empty-headed, mean-spirited, hateful bitch!
Shorter protestor today:
“Quick, tell me whether those people being arrested over there are Code Pinkers or Teabaggers, so I know whether to yell “America, love it or leave it!” at the people being arrested or “Leave them alone, this is America, not the Soviet Union!” at the cops!”
Well, by now I guess you guys know that it was Code Pink protesters that got arrested… although the headline for this article remains the same.
Honestly, many of you folks remind me of a bunch of 7 year-olds in a treehouse with a “No Gurls Allowed” sign and giggling over a Playboy magazine – while excitedly chattering over something you know nothing about.
The protest today was done by normal people. Seriously. You could actually sit right next them on a bus and not know that they were patriotic God-fearing, freedom-loving Americans.
The moron with the concentration camp photo was..a moron. I was there today and never saw that. I think that most of the people there today would have been offended by that sign, so I suspect there is more to the story. Yes, the right has excessive characters – just like the left.
By the way, although most of you derisively refer to the protesters as “Teabaggers”, you should know that this was not a “Tea Party” event. In fact, I saw very few Tea Party signs.
It was a spontaneous protest. What I DID see were many thousands of concerned Americans with serious resolve. Most of whom I spoke with had taken the day off from work. They are not the caricatures you wish they were.
Many are probably your neighbors and you don’t even know it.
So Members of Congress have enough time to organize “spontaneous protests” now, huh?
Maybe they should stick around and actually try to do their day jobs
I doubt Michelle Bachmann realizes it, but today is Guy Fawkes Day. Hell of a coincidence.
“Whatever, whatever, the Fifth of November.”
Boo hoo hoo. Let’s be nice to the people accusing us of hating our country and completely misrepresenting what’s in the healthcare bill!
I’m sure they’re perfectly sweet people. You don’t, however, seem to care that they are horribly, dysfunctionally misinformed. You don’t seem to include that in your considerations.
You’re right, if I sat next to these people without talking to them, I might never know that they believe everything Glenn Beck and Michelle Bachmann tell them — that I hate my country, that I want to take away all their freedoms, that Obama is a socialist out to destroy America, that the healthcare bill includes mandatory abortions, forced gay acceptance training, death panels for grannies and Palin kids and a secret agreement that at least one of your kidneys will end up in the belly of an illegal.
Please don’t pull this crap of trying to make us feel ashamed of our behavior in this thread because we aren’t sweet and nice to the protestors who accuse us of being monsters. The people at those protests were motivated to take time off from jobs they desperately need because they believed it when they were told that this healthcare bill is a greater threat to their “freedoms” than terrorism, that the evil Pelosi-Obama-Soros triumvurate were just seconds away from handing the nuclear football over to Fidel Castro, and that, as Ronald Reagan put it in 1961 (speaking about Medicare), that it would inevitably lead to the USA becoming just like the old Evil Empire.
These people are ignorant hypertribalists. The difference between us is, I still consider those people Americans and human beings and brethren. They would consider me evil and disqualified as an American and part of the vast liberal conspiracy. Yet you seem to think it is the liberals who are insufficiently civil. Fascinating.
