Agree. Gore utterly failed to enlist the support of his millions of backers in the Recount period, thus leaving the playing field of public influence to the highly motivated Bushistas and their skillful players like Jim Baker while they organized Brooks Bros mobs to shut down lawful vote counting activity. Our side got the dull aging lawyer Warren Christopher, and an overt attitude from Al Gore that said he didn't want to rile up the masses with street protests which could get out of hand as he decided to make his recount approach solely one of a battle in the literal courtroom.

Interesting to consider what his running mate's position might have been had Gore toughened up in the PR dept as much as the Repubs did. Liarman in his later memoir said he was privately one of those urging a more robust position in the Recount battle, yet other behavior in that campaign suggests he might have tried to backstab Gore had he actually tried the hardball approach.

Gore: He reminds me a bit of Humphrey: basically a good, decent liberal who would have done good progressive things as president, but who didn't have the cojones or sufficiently well-honed political instincts to do the things necessary to get elected.

I "hear" you, but I think the worst decision he ever made was conceding defeat to W so quickly and not pushing for more ballot counting, as Al Franken did this year in MN.

Why Gore found it accepted to "quit" so quickly - allegedly in the name of "healing" for the country - has always been a big sticking point for me. He permitted the devastation of this country by not fighting harder to be POTUS, which he was fairly elected to be.

I like Gore, but I also agree w/a different prior post, in that I think, once again, he is conceding to corporate big interests on the current bill. Gore seems like a "good" man, but he's not strong enough or something to really be as effective and productive as one would like.

What is it with Democrats. Republicans tend to be the most venal bottom dwelling jerks, but they fight & fight & fight for what they "believe" in. Seems to me that Dems are more into going along to get along. I get that some wars are won incrementally battle by battle, but for a guy who puts himself out there as extremely concerned about climate issues, he seems to cave in too much.

Offa the soap box now... onwards into the day ahead.

where or where is the al gore of 2002-2006? i admired that al gore so very much.

current version? not so much.

the so-called climate change legislation going through congress right now is a corporate boondoggle and not a science based bill. the war on science continues, this time advanced by democrats.

lots of good stuff from james hansen here:

....the obviously all-important goal of getting 60 votes....

I thought the goal was to, ya know, address the fucking problem.

Thanks for the post, BT.
