[UPDATE: 12 dead, 31 wounded. One confirmed shooter killed at the scene shot at the scene BUT NOW CONFIRMED ALIVE AND OUT OF SURGERY. Two other suspects in custody (now released). More below.]
Multiple sources are now reporting a shooting at Fort Hood Army base, near Killeen, TX. Seven are confirmed dead, and twelve (update: 20 wounded) others are reported wounded.
Olga Peña from the Killeen Daily Herald was on the scene. Interviewed by phone on MSNBC, Peña said shootings started in a barracks. Other reports had the shootings start at a base PX, but that might just be where one suspect wound up (update below says shooting was at “Soldier’s Readiness Processing Center“). Local news saying that there were either two or three suspects. One is in custody, one is believed holed up in a building at the base; whereabouts of a possible third shooter are not known. (The existence of a third shooter is not consistent with all reports). Live report on MSNBC now confirms a third shooter.
The base is on lockdown.
This story is developing. Speculation is rampant. We will try to keep it basic, here, until other information is confirmed.
Fort Hood is the largest military base in the world. Over 50,000 active service personnel are currently stationed there.
This is not the first shooting at Fort Hood this year. In July, one soldier recently back from Iraq shot and killed another from the same company:
Fort Hood Spc. Armando Ray Baca remained in custody Monday evening after a weekend shooting at a Fort Hood housing area that claimed the life of Spc. Ryan Richard Schlack, 30, of Oshkosh, Wis.
Both Baca and Schlack were assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s B Company, 27th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team and both returned to post in May after deploying to Iraq in June 2008.
UPDATE: TV reports have one suspect in his late 30s. Though all three suspects are reported to have been wearing “fatigues,” no one can confirm that the shooters were active military. Shootings are reported to have taken place in three locations.
UPDATE 2: TX Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison tells MSNBC one shooter was wounded and is now in custody. One other is not. Shooting, according to her, took place in a processing center preparing troops on their way to Iraq. The Senator was briefed by a base General who believes there were around 30 wounded.
UPDATE 3: US Army reports that shooting happened in “Soldier’s Readiness Processing Center” and the “Houze Theatre.”
UPDATE 4: KCEN TV reports that 500 soldiers are sweeping across Fort Hood. Killeen police are also surrounding the base. Fort Hood officials expected to brief the press shortly. TX Gov. Perry has scheduled a press conference for 5pm EST (not sure if that is EST or TX time).
Local TV reports that two suspects are now in custody (but, honestly, I am not sure how they are confirming that).
UPDATE 5: NBC’s Pete WIlliams is reporting that the one shooter confirmed apprehended was an “officer” on base. CNN is reporting 9 dead.
UPDATE 6: Olga Peña (Killeen Daily Herald) is reporting that shooter in custody is a 40 year old male. MSNBC refers to him as an “Army Major.”
UPDATE 7: Army spokesman confirms 12 dead. All casualties took place during the initial shooting at the Soldier Readiness facility. All were US military personnel. The one confirmed shooter was shot and killed by military personnel on the scene. Two other suspects in custody. One police officer also now reported dead, according to Army spokesman.
UPDATE 8: President Barack Obama expressed his sympathies during a pre-scheduled appearance at the Tribal Nations Conference.
UPDATE 9: ABC reports alleged shooter’s name:
The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.
The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.
The general said there were “eyewitness accounts of more than one shooter,” and the others were tracked to an adjacent facility.
Update 10: CNN also reports alleged shooter was Major Malik Hasan, and that the 12 dead includes the Major. MSNBC reporting that Maj. Hasan was due to be deployed to Iraq.

Prayers to the families involved…
This is horrible. One report was that the suspects were in uniform. Given the number of deaths and casualties they must have been heavily armed.
If outsiders there was a major security screw up allowing them access to the base.
If “insiders” one has to ask if they were undertaking some sort of vengeance act, or perhaps were caught in a robbery (weapons, money, goods…and opened fire on MP’s or others trying to apprehend them).
My condolences to the families of those service-people who have lost members, and I hope that those injured have a speedy recovery.
The incident took place at the sports dome, now known as the soldier readiness area, the station reported.
cnn
Any theories about what happened?
Any ideas on the best sources for good information as it breaks?
Watching news from Ft. Hood via Dallas station KXII where Iraq soldiers are texting in asking what’s going on.
MSNBC said there is to be a press conference from ft hood in about 10 minutes
The conference will be from Ft. Hood? Hmmm. That’s good, at least.
Prayers for the familes
It’s probably impolitic to ask this question, but I can’t help but wonder how the teabaggers are taking the fact that the media spotlight has likely been diverted from them and onto Fort Hood. Even Michele’s tinfoil hat can’t help with that…
There are 50,000 troops at Hood.
you are right, it is
MSNBC reporting that more shots have been fired in a base neighborhood — base sirens going off again.
Also saying 2 suspects are in custody.
(all unconfirmed)
Crikey. This is bad.
Son just talked to a buddy on base at Hood, and the soldiers are being told to take cover, and turn off all ventilation units.
A bulletin just reported other shooting, all of this unconfirmed, at a theatre; First Cavalry positioned here. Saying 9 deaths confirmed.
Local swat and cops involved. . .that seems pretty strange.
Turn off ventilation as a precaution, I hope? Don’t want to scare the kids by turning on the tv.
First Cav is mostly deployed, i think.
lotta MP’s are off base – currently up here in Indiana.
There are elements of numerous outfits there. The new structure is almost as hard to figure as the Marines.
9 is what I just heard…30 wounded
Ft Hood is the home of all the armored corps.
I’m guessing just precautionary, but I dunno.
III Corps
First Army Division West
1st Cavalry Division
3d Armored Cavalry Regiment
41st Fires Brigade
13th Sustainment Command.
504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade
89th Military Police Brigade
What kind of gases does the army use?
Swat teams would have protective gear.
Every kind there is. In this case I’d think CS.
Yeah, I used to have a pretty good handle on both Army and USAF force structures but I have no clue anymore. They’ve “purple-suited” a lot of the units over the last dozen years or so.
Most armored units do too.
They have that RCT thing going.
What i know about military is zilch, am just relaying what the news reporters are saying.
showing a convoy going in now.
MSNBC says they have an unconfirmed report that the shooter in custody is an officer on the base.
Holy shit now saying that the person who was apprehended is an officer on the base.
msnbc says one of the suspects is an officer. Don’t know if that means someone in an officers uni or a confirm.
Pleas for blood donations at Scott & White Hospital in Temple nearby, many shot.
Now saying two in custody
going back to Jay T’s comment in prev thread about lots of Post MP’s flyng to a training event in Indiana – wondering if they were workng with lighter than norm crew and shooters knew it -
Curious.
I wonder how long before F0X gets Baby Dick on to say this is all Obama’s fault.
These idiots, “an amazing show of force FIVE HUNDRED troops sweeping across that post”.
Pretty early to speculate I think.
why are troops told to lockdown when a convoy is coming in? seems confusing.
thanks for the updates, guys.
“When the sirens ring” !
Wow, do you have to make this a “damn fox news” moment? Can’t you just do as others are doing and relay information?
Thanks everyone for relaying what’s going on, no tv where i am.
roger that
now 9 confirmed deaths. :(
Oh boy, Arabic Major. . .
MSNBC: Nine confirmed dead. Captured shooter Army colonel with Arab-sounding name.
shooter has “an arabic sounding name”
Oh great.
“Arabic sounding name”
News conference starting; Lt. Gen. Bob (?) Cohn,
now 12 confirmed deaths.
I now am watching an ABC affiliate, and presser beginning.
Ah FUCK! An “Army Major with an ‘Arabic sounding name’”
actually Fox was doing a lot of fact based reporting – initially, now it’s the loathsome Cavuto and I can’t watch
With rank of Major….
Oh, how horrible if it was planned by an officer. Hope that is not so.
There’s a 4th ID patch on the Main Gate too.
per CNNlive just now, 12 dead. One shooter dead, one shooter in custody and a third at large.
Captured shooter Army Major with arabic sounding name.
saying one suspect is army major “with an arabic sounding name”. Last thing
I wanted to hear in this awful event. :(
What is CS? And Every kind of Gas what kinds are we using?
you mean I’m totally clueless?
also, has this been going on for almost two hours?? the time change has me really messed up.
Recall that the fragger/shooter in Kuwait was a muslim NCO.
This is bad why?
you mean like Abizaid ?
media clowns
CS is run of the mill tear gas.
Shooter #1 killed
Watching CNN online, and they have nothing on one of the shooters being an officer.
Blogs are apparently faster than CNN
what does that mean. 4th id patch? is there a fourth person involved. four id’s missing?
I’m nervous, sorry for stupid Qs.
You have summed up Limpy Limbaugh’s plans for his show tomorrow.
Thanks
Shooter killed…
You had to hear her, obviously it’s good to secure the area. I’m sure there is some kind of reaction force on post 24/7 and tons of contingency.
Lt Gen Bob Coe; 3 corps general, near resolution; A shooter, soldier readiness facility for deployment, for meds. Numbers are 12 dead 31 wounded, Ctrl TX med facilities. Three total, shooters, two apprehended, are suspects at this time, main shooter dead. Under lockdown. Situation near conclusion so can lift shutdown. Err on side of caution. All casualties in initial incident.
No 4th Infantry Division, the Ivy Division. Just reinforcing the complexity of the garrison.
12 dead
Handguns, dude asks if they reloaded. No they were tv handguns that hold infinite rounds. Morons
A local policeman killed
Thanks Raven
Shooter was using handguns.
horrible.
shooters, maybe
He was a contract civilian policeman on base.
KBH’s earler statement did say SWAT person was among the dead -
Doesn’t it seem kinda hard to kill 12 and injure 30+ with handguns?
an earlier report said “military style” weapons. I’m not refuting what you are saying, I’m just wondering what the heck kind of handguns look like military weapons.
But I’m very very ignorant in this department.
3 guys all decide to start shooting an army base full of people with guns they could have blown up a few fuel trucks, ammo depots, etc and been much more successful. I think they wanted to die and they for what ever reason wanted it to be more personal than an explosion.
No really, if they were bunched and trapped.
May only be one – other two are “suspects”
An 9mm and a 45 look enough alike that it would be easy. 13 rounds in each and if you know what you are doing you can reload very quickly.
yeah, that’s at least 14 rounds per shooter, maybe they each had two guns to minimize reloading? again, me no expert
roger
you just pop a button, slap in another magazine, chamber and go.
The spokesman said handguns.
9 campuses on Ft. Hood, all under lockdown, mainly elementary, in after school activities, had closed early today.
Sometimes, especially in a crowded area, a bullet can pass thru one person and hit another.
Showers bunched up unarmed? Waiting in line for food? Bunched up preferably unarmed and someplace the shooter can get away from without being seen so they can shoot someone else.
Obama UP
gotcha. wasn’t questioning your reporting…
raven straightened me out with some gun facts above.
There are not going to be any regular troops with live ammo on a post like that. Even overseas there are strict procedures for both weapons and ammunition.
I heard shooter from VA and just back from Iraq
Just ask Arlen Specter
Yesterday I wondered what would the media reaction be if there was a shooting at a tea party. What’s News Corp’s ROI When Someone is Shot at a Tea Party?
The media love these kind of events. So much so that they are starting to organize them.
Ok gottcha
Was going to ask what happened to 4ID in your list …
The military way of doing things. I am sick of young men and women killing. Them and us. If you take up violence as a way to deal.this is what you get.
What’s interesting is that it is not listed on their wiki.
OK, I can’t stand it and here comes a blurt.
TROOPS HOME NOW.
They are well past the breaking point and for what?
You may want to wait a bit before you start that.
what cliches is Obama offering up?
We know nothing of the shooters motives besides maybe an Arab sounding name. But yes the shooter could be a Fox News Fanatic for all we know now.
Um, what would you say?
.45 holds 7 in magazine.
Seconded!
who you talkin to?
That is some serious betrayal. Soldiers killing soldiers.
That is strange. The 4ID is the high-tech division down there. They’re the ones who test out all the new gizmos, which is an activity that accounts for a lot of the non-military people on the base.
Pretty unnecessary…
K. Ba’al E saying there is a motive.
I suspect she’s flying blind there. she is running for gov.
sorry, just frustrated. I prefer action not more platitudes and promises. I’ll withhold more comment until the picture is filled in more.
thanks for your info and updates.
True, but I think that all the pistols the military issues now are 9mm, which hold more.
This “Arab Sounding name” BS just pisses me off. Stephen Colbert’s name sounds French! Traitor!
When some unhinged guy from the South Bay drove a car into people in San Francisco Melanie Morgan on KSFO latched on to the “Arab sounding name” and proclaimed this was a “mini-jihad”. Of course we find out that it had NOTHING to do with any terrorism or jihad. Just some mentally unbalanced guy with unrequited love problems who took it out on strangers. But Panic toward the others MUST BE CREATED to keep us in a state of fear.
Fox and Clear Channel will soon have wall-to-wall blame Obama coverage.
My point was that it would be easy to mistake a 9 for a 45 in a crisis.
That’s correct, I was only making a technical correction regarding the second finest handgun made. *g*
Followed closely by the firepups
Got that right.
yea, you’re right, I did say in both but that’s not what I meant. duh
My glock 21 holds 13 rounds….
And the finest is?
Colt Army Single Action revolver, commonly referred to as the Peacemaker.
Yeah, And I won’t be very ready to hear that either….heard crazy John Voight a little bit on my car radio.
Inside base, reporting that weapons used were not military, all weapons had been checked in recently
Heat of the moment. *g*
Glock holds 15 and one in the chamber
Now let’s blame it on al-Qaida
Maybe it’s some of the gang members we lowered standards for to meet enlistment numbers
Of course, a forty year old WM wouldn’t be one of them
Oh boy, Cliff Van Zandt on msnbc, I’m not saying it is but’ “AL QUEDa AL QUEDA AL QUEDA AL QUEDA AL QUEDA AL QUEDA AL QUEDA AL QUEDA!
As we’re seeing, wrong information is easy to come by in the aftermath of events like this. We’ll know more about these folks later, I suspect. In the meantime, this just makes what KSFO is doing even more irresponsible.
Not many of them make Major.
True. I find it hard to tell the difference, particularly if they’re in someone’s hands.
Yeah, and then there’s Tweety with his “Let’s not speculate while I sit here doing nothing but speculate”
Maybe the two suspects were actually fighting the original shooter, who knows yet?
We had a situation like that a few years ago…too soon to tell.
*gesundheit*
JHFC, where do they come from?
Take a hike, bigot.
Filling air time is no easy task.
get’s even harder if it’s aimed at you, firing. . . .shhhhhhhssshh
They need to stop having that ass on. all he does is wildly speculate. now tweety, not wanting to speculate, is opening another round of speculation.
Shepard Smith states the three shooters are military.
Blitzer asked Honore if this kind of thing happened often on military bases.
Shit yea, it just never gets out.
I think the mods must have done their work since I’m not seeing anything untoward. Yay Mods!
Ya caught that al-Qaida meme, hunh?
If this was an al-Qaida thing there would have been coordinated shootings across the country.
just can’t watch Tweety
At that point, they all look pretty much the same, I imagine.
Quick mods.
I’ll take a good cup of coffee at your leisure. :})
Local area calling for blood….2 handguns, but no specifics.
Tweety speculates that I want to order up some pancakes. From my mom.
2 handguns, almost 40 hit. Damn, that’s a lot of shooting.
Tweety has convicted the two suspects.
malik nadal hassan
aged 39-40
Name = Hasan
Malik Nadal Hasan is the name of the shooter
Malik Nadal Hasan is 39 or 40 year old army major, the perp who is dead.
AP reports 12 dead, 31 wounded as of 30 minutes ago.
Malik Nadal Hasan?
Sounds Arabic to me. Moroccan?
MAybe this guy was a foreign national who joined the Army like the Cuban exiles after the Bay of Pigs.
Muhammed Ali used to be Cassius Clay. Kareem Abdul Jabaar used to be Lew Alsinder. Assumptions are dangerous.
He was going to deploy to Iraq per Kay Bailey Hutchinson.
I wonder how many times he was there before. I blame Geroge W. Bush for starting that cursed war.
He’s being a particular horse’s ass, isn’t he?
correction: Iraq or Afghanistan
Foreign nationals may be allowed to enlist but I’d find it doubtful if many foreign nationals are commissioned officers.
I sure hope this wasn’t an extreme variation of “suicide by cop.”
Just being picky about spelling: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Lew Alcindor.
CNN confirms that Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan is one of the gunmen. Twelve dead includes one of the gunmen.
I watched him yesterday and in an entire hour he didn’t mention CA 10 once. Idiot gets something in his head and can’t learn anything else.
That was where my imagination went immediately.
a convert to Islam
He collects Persian rugs. His house, with 7 1/2 foot doorways, had them everywhere. House burned down years ago. Too bad.
A medical type person is automatically commissioned. A RN is a Lt. a MD = capt. and promoted from there. Same is true for other professionals.
When will someone on Fox News note that the Manzanar location is preserved and possibly could be restarted?
Who reported that?
He should have bought Wilt’s old house.
I used to ride the subway with him every day in HS when he was Lew Alcinder and going to catholic school.
I met him through my friend who owned the only store in LA that carried his size in Levi’s. A really nice man.
He was a good kid too.
Exactly my next thought…maybe Nation of Islam American.
I’ll stop now starting to feel like tweety
LOL
all victims were adults, no children hurt.
You went to Power?
I went to christ the king. Remember margie baez went out with Lew for awhile.
Shepard Smith
Joan’s sister?
We can be thankful for that, at least.
No I went to Brooklyn Tech – 1 subway stop away.
This guy does not appear to be a Medico.
This will not be the last time, unfortunately.
When I was a kid in the late 60s-early 70s I had three young men from my small street go off to Vietnam.
One never came home.
The other two committed suicide, independently, after they got home.
Tragic.
CBS affiliate Reporting was Army major, retaliatory killing, AP report from official re; Hasan, still 2 handguns. Don’t know if was birth name.
Thanks. Haven’t heard that on msnbc.
Gotta love it. “Without other details, I’ll now open it up for questions.” WTF?
Any info on retaliation?
One shooter, 2 handguns, 40+ hit. Goddamn.
Gov. Goodhair on CNN (press conference – he needs to get some face time since Kay Bailey got some earlier) Wearing an ugly ass lime green tie.
That was all said, tho earlier, K. Ba’al E did say there was a motive.
Is lime green the new tie power color?
Rick Perry gave presser. That clown has difuculties with his vocalbullary too. Is that a prerequisite requirement to be Texas governor?
I thought it went out with cottage cheese McCain’s thrillah in katrinah.
No, please. Recall Ann Richards….but I take your point. It’s a guy cheerleader thing, I guess.
Thinks of the electorate. yep, when in the local Dairy Queen
Couldn’t watch him.
Yea, and he has a great relationship with the military and the federal authorities. Just who does he think he would be up against when they leave the union?
Reports he wasn’t happy to be deployed….
Base commander is on CNN now.
All three shooters were U.S. soldiers. One dead, other two have been apprehended. Confirms 12 dead, 31 wounded. Occurred at Soldiers Readiness Facility, which comprises several bldgs. (old sports dome facility). Fort is still locked down.
Local affiliate just coming on air, gives AP reports Hasan was a convert to Islam, but conflicting reports.
I wonder how many times deployed?
I was feeding the dog. Missed it. Did he say all three were shooters?
“CBS News has learned the suspect in the Fort Hood shooting, Major Malik Nadal Hasan, was an Army psychiatrist”
True this is why they stopped the Draft. If we shared all the things that come with “War” there would be no Iraq War at the very least. I don’t why they point out “Hassan” big fucking deal, he was an unhappy solider that should be the focus.
Sorry but America is not a White Male, Christian country….
All I have heard does not indicate that..being held as suspects, but nothing specific
A mental health professional.
He said there were three gunmen, and that all were U.S. soldiers.
base commander says eyewitness reports of more than one shooter. the two suspects were apprehended away from the scene of the shootings.
Did not hear a number but I did hear he had been there.
Ed just said he was an army mental health officer
Holy moly.
Rep McCaul saying this is an attack against our military…..
Physician heal thyself.
Aw, somebody shut these fools up.
Considering the source, can we have a “Well, Duh”
I guest their stress programs need a little adjustment.
Thank you…so, what can you expect?
Base is still locked down…
It’s not unusual for people who have emotional issues to choose mental health as a profession.
I am just sick inside and cannot stop crying. My son is stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC. He says they are on heightened security right now. His best friend is stationed at Ft. Hood but thankfully he is unhurt.
I just heard on MSNBC that this Major was in the Mental Health sector of the Army ? Meaning he was involved in helping in a medical manner for PSTD or varying forms of. I cannot imagine his motive. Also, the handguns were personally his own. HOW did he have so MUCH ammunition ?
I am frightened for my son. SOuth Carolina politicians are every bit anti Obama as Texas. Would this have anything to do with it at all ? I am being paranoid I know, but this has me rocked to the core.
((((militarymom))))
I don’t think it was an anti Obama thing. Military move all over. Take a deep breath – the event is over. I am a military dad and understand the worry.
What the hell? A major military base can’t stop three guys from raging all over it? The families of the dead, when they have come to term with their grief, should sue the stupid bastards in charge for all they’re worth. If they can’t stop three people, at the largest military base in the entire world, what good is security for?
Licensed Psychiatrist from Maryland….
specialty traumatic stress –Good God
He treated PTSD. I would imagine that he heard so many horrific stories. It’s not hard to imagine how someone in that position could crack.
His specialty was traumatic stress.
Sorry, getting ready to go to my son’s confirmation.
Nice joke. Good school Bklyn Tech.
I went to St. Francis College for a couple of semesters 68-69.
Congratulations to your son….Enjoy the evening.
Photo shows he is not African-American
Does he look Middle Eastern? It was hard to tell.
He appears to be white or Middle Eastern from a picture at his
Trauma Center worksite. He’s not African American. If he is a recent convert to Islam that likely means that his name was changed.
I’m also wondering if the conversion may have been a means of changing his “status” for deployment. It doesn’t sound like it was something that would be done in reaction to the invasion of Iraq or Afghanistan…why wait so long?
Furthermore, why would someone announce a conversion to Islam and make it public with a name change if one was intent on undertaking a terrorist act? Especially so if one was a covert member or sympathiser of al Qaida? That would be stupid. One would retain ones prior identity, mix in, and then attack. Not send up a red flag.
Could have been, but he could have been from many of the ethnic groups clustered around the Mediterranean, too (IOW, Greek, Italian, Turkish, etc.)
Whatever this was, it now appears to be an individual act. The other two suspects have been released. That means it could have been some sort of mental breakdown.
Other two soldiers have been released from custody. A fourth is now in custody.
That’s what it looked like to me.
Thanks. I am calmer now, but my heart and prayers go out to the families of these soldiers. My biggest worry now, of course, is if it happened there, it can happen anywhere at any base but I guess that is true of anything.
My son is set to deploy in months and while he is not looking forward to it especially, we take ” some ” small comfort in knowing that he maintains the Apaches and should not come under any direct fire. Our poor soldiers, men and women alike. Haven’t they gone through enough?
Awaiting the press conference….
Glad to hear that your son will not be in a combat position. Hope all goes well for him.
They have gone through way too much at the behest of a bully, narcissistic Pres. and his goons….The Iraq story will always make me sick…sending US citizens to tear up a country and murder its citizens. We should all weep for so many victims, ours and theirs. Comfort the people..
He apparently was co-chair at a session of the APA meetings in SF in May entitled
“CW17. Medical Issues for Psychiatrists in Disasters APA Committee on Psychiatric Dimensions of Disaster; Chair: Mark Viron, M.D., Co-Chair: Nidal Hasan, M.D.”
Truly bizarre given his background.
I can find no record of his name before this year…which suggests perhaps a change in his name linked to his conversion.
Sweet merciful heavens, Tweety is SUCH an asshole.
A picture of Malik Nidal Husan
I had to flip channels. Tweety was jerking off under the table from all the gore of it. Disgusting.
Hysterical…And that’s not?
I want to go fix dinner, but I’m waiting for the presser. Otherwise, I’ve had enough for now.
Cobern picked a good day to put a hold on verterans’ benefit bill.
Had Hasan been deployed to Iraq before? Did he have any connection with SERE training?
Sorry for not reading all the comments first, but the thing that stands out to me on this situation is that the guy was being sent back to Iraq for what? a 3rd or 4th deployment? And he apparently didn’t want to go.
This is a symptom of a gigantic problem. We’ve been fighting thess wars without a draft, forcing part-time national guard troops who were never supposed to be full-time combat military, to do tour after tour, because of war-crazed Dick Cheneys, Donald Rumsfelds, Paul Wolfowitzs and Dougie Feiths, most of whom have never even served in battle. The “stop-loss” policy needs to be highlighted here, too. This gigantic problem is the way our war policies are grinding our service men and women down. The price we are paying is not just $$$$ and lives, but mental degradation.
Its interesting that this happens before Obama announces his decision on the request for more troops in Afghanistan. It has got to give him more pause.
Bob in AZ
The comments on that site are simply unacceptable.
We don’t know for sure yet, but it sounds to me like it would have been his first deployment.
I’ve heard nothing about SERE, but I thought I heard early that it was “re” deployment…..nothing more specific.
Thank you very much. I’m pretty liberal and I support our President and my son does as well. He has loved the military since he was a child. Another of my sons is in the Coast Guard. Any loss of a brother soldier affects them deeply. They are both upset and worry for their fellow soldiers. I wish he wasn’t in South Carolina sometimes, but that is where his fiancee’ lived so….
Thank you for your warm thoughts.
Nader Hassan, his cousin is on with Shepard Smith, says he was always Muslim, wanted to join military against parent’s wishes.
But was getting sick of the harassment from fellow soldiers because he was Muslim.
Thank you, RevBev.
I have no friends nor relatives in the miliatry, like most Americans. But I can only imagine how this particular tragedy might affect them. It’s reversal of all the values the military tries to instill about protecting your buddies.
Thanks. An important update.
Possibly his first deployment TO IRAQ, but it has been stated that this would be his 3rd or 4th tour of duty, that was involuntary.
Bob in AZ
According to link at 251, he completed his residency in 2007, and then underwent further training. Where was the time for him to be deployed multiple times? Of course, we don’t know which information is accurate at this point.
To clarify….my comments were about W the Decider who initiated this disaster based on a lie…not the troops who stepped up.
A terrible tragedy. Because of the alleged shooter’s identity I’m sure the Right will use this as an opportunity for more arab/muslim bashing.
Fucking Tweety has no idea that an Army doctor would have a gun, or be trained in marksmanship… Keefuckingrist…
One reason I asked about SERE training was he wouldn’t necessarily be assigned for a full deployment, especially in the event he was sent to black sites. Of course. this is nothing but speculation on my part.
Yea, I had to turn him off. “This war is like no other. IED’S, snipers, never facing an enemy. You never feel safe”. Uh huh.
Doesn’t sound like SERE to me.
How old is he? Has he EVER heard ANYTHING about the Nam?
And of course eCAHNomics was right earlier — you can almost hear the fapping when he talks about war…
Oi.
Moran. Maroon.
Never mind that the guns in question may not have belonged to the Army…
Medics go out on patrol. And when they do, they apparently carry a VERY loud, VERY distinctive-sounding rifle. This is so that their unit knows right away that their sawbones is in trouble.
But, hey, Tweety is Tweety, what can we say.

Thanks for the info, Elliott, that sounds like it could be an important piece of the puzzle. I imagine either political side could use this to their advantage so I hope the media does some good digging for once and employs research independent of the military PR machine. We wouldn’t want any situations to get the Tillman treatment ever again. Perhaps a portion of the plight – the taxation – these wars are taking on military families (in terms of mental and physical health, not just financial) will move to the forefront of the debate.
Presser keeps getting postponed. I can just imagine the traffic back & forth between the Pentagon brass, WH, etc., trying to figure out how to spin this. Excuse me for my cynicism.
He was in the peace corps at the time. A noble pursuit for sure but he is just so fucking stupid sometimes it’s unreal. He’s not that much different that the rest, one dude asked the general if the the shooter reloaded.
That’s a new one on me.
Funny (or perhaps ironic is a better word) that you should mention Tillman right before my comment @ 278.
[snort] You’re cute when you’re naive… [grin] The media? Not bloody likely — other than maybe Rachel. I’d look to the blogs. Maybe Raven can point us to some military news blogs worth checking?
I’m listening to the theory that he was tired of being fucked with because he was a muslim.
Well, in fairness, I have no idea how many rounds are in the clip of a typical semi-automatic pistol. But I doubt it’s as high as 40+…

Cynical? YOU??? (((eCAHNomics)))
Try Pat Lang or Army of Dude. Neither have anything up on this yet but they will. Dude is in Austin at UT now.
9mm’s hold 13 with one in the chamber. Easy to reload magazines.
The medics on patrol bit, or the loud-ass rifle bit?
This was from someone who’d been a medic in Teh Irak. One of the lucky ones…came home in one piece, waited out his Stop Loss and got his discharge. Not that the emotional toll was light, of course…

Hood was the most miserable place I ever lived. For a child it was a nightmare, every single day and night. Granted that was 40 years ago, but I can’t imagine that curse wearing off as long as it’s a military base.
So terribly sorry it happened, but it’s almost impossible to believe it doesn’t happen in that hell hole every day.
Good info here, too.
Thanks. I’m not surprised they don’t have anything up yet. They probably do that silly thing called “research” or “investigation,” rather than shoot from the hip. (Love the name Army of Dude!)
I meant that I wished to be excused for being cynical in light of such a tragic event. I would NEVER ask to be excused for being cynical in other circumstances. *g*
Thanks for that link.
Thanks. Yes, it looks like EZ reload on my TV…that’s if you’re carrying extra mags.
So the first load is 13, and then there’s 12 thereafter (from the new clip). So, even with 2 guns, he had to reload each at least once. I hope/imagine that a fair number of rounds missed.

He is a very gifted writer, it’s worth it to dig around his archives. One of his fellow soldiers that was KIA in Iraq was from here.
thx
Someone, CBS?, did a review of violent history…very impressive and goes back along way….really big episode in ‘91. Certainly not a new outbreak.
Oh, thank heaven! Tweety’s over!
What it Hood itself, or the military syndrome?
And yes, it’s got to be worse now than 40 years ago, considering the “volunteer” army enlisted have many more family members around than back then.
Read this short one from last vets day
You’re right. He’s one hell of a talented writer. Bookmarked.
Got it from a Tweet by Spencer Ackerman.
“It’s not unusual for people who have emotional issues to choose mental health as a profession.”
I’m disgusted by your cavalier smear, as this statement was clearly meant to be.
This is a completely irresponsible statement especially given the context. To blanket the highly honorable and needed mental health professionals with “emotional issues” is an inaccurate and highly prejudicial notion. It’s fear mongering and ignorant in the extreme.
Please apologize.
When I said the media I meant journalism in any and ALL mediums so I was not the one being naive – blogs were already included in my definition. (Feel free to ask me next time before throwing out some judgment, though.) You see, I worked for a major newspaper before moving on to edit a Web site, so I know that good journalism can exist in either place and it’s not the medium that ensures whether said journalism is good or bad.
You obviously don’t know eCAHNomics. We do. She doesn’t traffic in “cavalier smears.” You seem to.
Huh? A little sensitive? I did not say that all mental health professionals had emotional problems.
I personally have known several who have been motivated to choose that field because of their personal issues, and have talked to them about the profession.
I was merely trying to figure out what might have motivated the shooter, given what we think we know about his background.
I have nothing to aplogize for.
Thanks.
Sorry if you mistook my statement for a judgment. It certainly wasn’t meant that way — as a matter of fact, I was agreeing with you. I thought the (grin) would indicate that.
Any time. We seem to be attracting a few folks with very easily ruffled feathers this evening.
Well, he’s supposed to have had two, each with 13 round magazines (and most likely one in the chamber ready to fire so that’s 28 rounds, a reload of each (26 more) for a total of 54 rounds and there are 11 dead (not counting the shooter) and 31 wounded.
He didn’t miss too often.
As a grim consideration, some of the rounds may have wounded more than one if there were through-and-through wounds.
Understandable that Ft. Hood events should cause some to be extra sensitive. And it’s hard online to discern tone of voice and where someone is coming from if you don’t know the person.
I got the impression that there were people in line for a graduation ceremony. One msnbc guest used the military phrase “target rich envirionment,” a euphemism for phrases that could be much more crudely expressed.
Very true. It’s hard enough sometimes in person to discern clearly what people intend.
Yep, I’ve known a few mental health experts. Some were really good. Some, not so much. Just like lawyers. Some care, some are rats. Same with dentists, auto repair people. We can’t all be great at what we do, but I agree with eCahn, that some folks go into the mental health industry to figure out their own shit.
I heard someone on the tv wonder what kind of stories this man had to listen to. My guess is that there were a lot of really horrible stories. But, I’m not an expert.
Ft. Hood PC shortly.
One of the best physicians I’ve ever known (a rehabilitation medicine specialist) had to undergo psychiatric counseling as part of his training. He relayed the tale of going to meet his psychiatrist, only to find an immensely obese woman seated behind a tiny Queen Anne desk with a huge bowl of candy on it. He asked to be reassigned another therapist…
Yes, that was my speculation way far upthread.
msnbc guest said that dentists have one of the highest suicide rates because of all the pain they see. I had previously heard that it was docs in general, for the same reason, plus they have all the painless drugs at hand to facilitate the act. I’d guess that most doc suicides do not involve guns and taking out others in the process though.
Oy.
Yikes. That would do it.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who wouldn’t have considered that a Red Flag.
Searching for a specialist is like anything else. You get three quotes. And, you check them out. Just something my pop taught me.
I had heard it as dentists having the high suicide rate (which they do) due to most people HATING going to the dentist, and if you factor in fear and pain… It can’t really be jolly being in a profession where people drag themselves to your office only when they’re in intractable pain (the fearful ones) or as a twice-a-year chore.
Plus, there’s all that spit… (I should talk, working for docs who deal with snot all day!)
Life lesson in dealing with the mafia of the intelligentsia (docs, lawyers, higher ed).
And always looking down in the mouth.
Oooooh. You gave me the willie-shudders. ‘Tis so true.
And people wonder why or how we get skeptical, if not cynical. Huh?
Yep.
PS – Hi Marion in Savanah. And, so long, eCahn. Soup’s on.
Enjoy your meal. I’m eating while watching, as I don’t want to miss the Ft. Hood presser.
Homemade split pea and lentil with carrots, celery and onions. Gosh, I love cooler weather meals.
I’ve been waiting for the presser too long. Gotta good book. I’m sure I’ll catch it later. At least several times. *g*
((girlfriends))
I’m not being flippant about today’s tragedy. Just cherishing the good stuff while it’s here.
I still have a freezer full of soup, and yes, it’s good food for the cold weather. I also have a freezer full of homemade stock, so that when my soup inventory gets drawn down, I have the ingredients to make more. Split pea is on the list.
I’m goona move upthread. It’s clear that the “official” version is taking quite awile to craft.
he’s not dead
No longer lock down…Shooter is not dead…hospitalized.
The police officer isn’t dead either
Amazing…how could the media get his “death” wrong?
That’s good
It’s called the fog of war. They are all in cammies, the job is first to save people. The general confirms, confusion at the hospital but there was a CID agent with him at all times.
Only one was a semi?
understand, but how can the media report a death when it didn’t occur?
Empty it, hold people at bay with the revolver, reload.
I think that it, the media, was given that info. I also think it really doesn’t matter.
that’s what I would ask, where did the shooter reload?
It’s not that hard to reload a 9mm.
As a former reporter, nothing is more important than getting a death wrong. At the least, you have to attribute the quote and they didn’t.
Self preservation is a hell of a influence. People always think, “someone should have charged him”. It’s easy to say.
As a former soldier I don’t think that is the most important thing but I respect your perspective.
New post way up top about latest developments
I would never say that. I think if people were honest, they would say they don’t know how they would act until they’re in that situation.
The back story on this event, to me, is
(1) The number of suicides at Ft. Hood
(2) The miss-use of the National Guard and the repeated use of Stop-Loss in order to field sufficient numbers of troops in an illegal war that has lasted longer than WW-II.
We are grinding our troops to bits, as cannon fodder for Dick Cheney’s war.
The proper way to “support our troops” would be to
(1) Bring the National Guard troops back home
(2) Stop the “Stop-loss” policy
Bob in AZ
people are gonna have to stop just voting Democratic, no matter what, for those 2 things to ever happen.
