MSNBC and AP are now both calling the race for Republican Chris Christie. With 70% of the precincts reporting, Christie holds a 50% to 44% margin over Corzine.
Across the river, in New York City, number-crunchers are in quite a tizzy as the exit poll company has pulled back their projection of a Bloomberg victory for NYC Mayor. City Comptroller Bill Thompson is within 3% with about 3/4 of precincts reporting.
Update: Most news organizations are now calling the race for Mayor Bloomberg. Still, for a candidate that spent more than ten times what his opponent did, over $100 million, with the power of incumbency, it will end up ridiculously close. As I have been saying since last year, any halfway decent Democrat could’ve beat this guy–unfortunately, Democrats had a quarter-way decent candidate.
The guy with the biggest egg on his face right now? Besides Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson and the entire conservative movement? That would be Anthony Weiner. He was planning to run for Mayor in New York City. Had a campaign all set. Then he begged off when Michael Bloomberg got the City Council to change term limits and allow him a third term. Tonight, Michael Bloomberg barely won over little-known Bill Thompson. Weiner spent months raising his profile in the health care debate. He would have SLAUGHTERED Bloomberg, if tonight’s results are any indication.

Disgusting.
Revolting. Something illegal going on, no doubt.
Someone please tell me where OFA was (or wasn’t) in New Jersey.
Only two points apart on the Maine initiative according to TPM. No is leading.
barf
So what’s going to happen when he is indicted by a federal grand jury?
And Rahm is helping to dismantle Sarbanes-Oxley. Because why, that “in the tank for the banks” thing will be a winner in 2010?
I prefer AP with No leading by six.
Really disheartening. I was looking forward to Christie being indicted – not elected.
Jane, thanks for speaking for us on RM tonight. Great job!
Don’t give up, the indictment could still happen.
I just don’t get it. I really don’t.
Some days I feel like I live in an alternate universe, you know where “This is right, that is wrong” (on so many levels) just doesn’t exist.
Goldman Sachs, weighing heavily?
Mafia:1 Goldman Sachs: 0
TPM is showing Owens ahead of Hoffman 51-44. That would be a prize!
Thanks – I needed that! Was born in Jersey and have no illusions about how
politics there work. Just worried about what this means for 2010.
Rats!
If only Sarah Palin had made one more visit to the district…
Oh, I meant Glenn Beck.
City Comptroller Bill Thompson is within 3% with about 3/4 of precincts reporting.
Hope the remaining 25% will deny the cocksucker the acquisition. Bloomberg, that is.
The sad thing is when repuke win, the elected dems don’t really pay. They are rich and can go work for their lobby masters. It is the people who are truly fucked. Perhaps the administration will get their head out of their ass now. If they don’t we are all really really fucked. Not the politicans but the american people who go to work every day to be bent over by these slimy bastards and fleeced for every fucking thing we own.
To save time here in Illinois we are thinking of designating one of the state prisons as the governor’s mansion.
I did my part by voting against Bloomberg today. It was the least I could do.
Now it’s 50-45 Owens with 40% reporting.
If only Glenn and Sarah had been on dancing with the stars together.
Fingers crossed for Owens!
Okay…now I’m laughing.
Good thinking. Who’s got the key?
But I thought this guy was handpicked by Karl himself BWAHhahaha!
“Celebrate Good Times Come On! ” Cool and the Gang
Complimenting Bloomberg will only encourage him.
Good riddance to Corzine, I doubt many progressives will shed many tears ove that.
Between him and Christie, the choice was the evil of the hollow brained ‘no taxes, no goverment’ mantra of Christie, and the hollow pretentious ‘democrat’ who has never managed to shed his corporatist ties and interrests.
This should be a wake-up call for democrats nation-wide.
Although on fox news and fox newailite (formerly cnn), they are claiming this a ‘rejection of socialism’ and a ‘vote against big goverment’.
Sigh.
Hopefully Fitz.
Trying to figure out how things will play out going forward…
What will Republican victories in gov. races in NJ and Virginia mean for Democrats?
Will they move more to the right in an effort to appease those who voted for the Republicans, or move more to the left in an effort to please those who didn’t bother coming out for Corzine or Deeds?
The momentum that helped Obama win Virginia not so long ago seems to have faded there.
At least his money didn’t buy the race easily.
Ok sorry I thought the Dem was winning my bad.
Reality will not influence the narrative. It will be the Left’s fault.
Isn’t Owens more conservative than Scozzafava? Isn’t Owens opposed to a PO? If so, I think I’d rather have Hoffman win so that the Republicans go even faster off the teabagger cliff.
Jane is upstairs!
Klein on How Lieberman Went Bad: It’s All Jane’s Fault
Not entirely sure, but she endorsed Owens because he was more in line with her ideals than the conservative party candidate.
I did hear on good authority years ago that Bloomberg was gay. But then years later, on apparently better authority, I was told that was ridiculous. So take your bets.
With 70% of the precincts reporting, Christie holds a 50% to 44% margin over Corzine.
The race is still winnable after Al Gore every Dem should no better than to concede early and isn’t Rupert on the AP board? MSNBC Chuck Todd does their political Stats when has that guy ever said anything is good for the Dems unless it was to big to be ignored.
It seems like there are always rumors to that effect regarding high profile pols.
GOLDMANSLACKS VERSUS USDA.
no matter the outcome, the citizenry loses.
The media is misreading these Republican wins. They assume voters are opposed to the public option, when in truth, they are disappointed that we are not getting a VIGOROUS public option, and some real banking reforms, instead of bail-outs. The “bait and switch” tactics by Obama and the Dems are going to lead to more progressive voters either staying home or voting 3rd party. Dems be warned!
Me too.
everybody upstairs???
I’m from NJ too. Even though it didn’t turn out as I hoped, I can’t help but feel a sense of history tonight. Not quite the same as a year ago when Obama won. But a sense of history nonetheless.
You are so right.People are disillusioned and feel punked hope this sends the Dems in Wash and the WH a wake up call.
No real leadership from a seemingly weak & timid Prez with huge majorities in congress and still unable to define his stance on HCR ain’t encouraging voters to the Dem plank.
Look,if we can’t get robust HCR,I hope the voters stay home when it’s Harry Reid’s time next Nov.
It’s the only way we have left short of taking to the streets to help ourselves.
In the elections, I believe we simply saw a firm anti-incumbent tendency. So glad to see that Bloomberg didn’t get the huge majority he paid for, so sad to know that he will be my mayor for the next 4 years. Jersey is a bit of a loss, but what a joy if/when Christie is indicted. Interesting too that the Teabagger wing won’t be getting their wish in NY 23. Hey, it wasn’t great, but it could have been worse.
I don’t know so much about sense of history, as that it’s more of the same.
It’s the same kind of “Demonized Democratic Governor Gets Ousted” headline that Governor Florio got handed in 1993. And Byrne almost during some points in 1977.
I don’t think Jon Corzine sat around on his buns for 4 years, serving time. The state has a boat load of problems, and now a loudmouth buffoon who is controlled by Republican County bosses to add more problems.
The Assembly is going to be heavily Democratic (maybe not 48-32, but close). The Senate wasn’t up. So the Christie Administration is going to be negotiating with a State House that will be even less cooperative than it was with Corzine’s initiatives.
did you vote for Thompson or Rev. Billy Talen? ;-)
They were MIA all over the map today. They couldn’t be bothered with Marriage Equality in Maine either.
I heard the real take last night by the former governor,Jim Florio.
The people fell for the okey doke about trenton controlling property taxes,he said “that its not trenton the controls the taxes, its the municipalitys that do”I’ll give the new Governor 90 days before the worm starts to turn.
Is Bloomberg a stalking horse for Hugo Chavez? By his changing the election laws to permit himself to run again to succeed himself, how is he different from the right-wing wacko hysteria against Zelaya in Honduras?
