About Firedoglake
Sly and the Pig!
Hey Suz!
hey newton — how’s the bay area tonight?
Slyvester rocks!
shhhhh, i’m watching the ‘toon in my Paul Krugman footie PJ’s.
Where are my manners – chilly and dry. How about up there?
edit: and suz, these restored post-war toons are beautiful.
this one is one of my favorite slyvester toons. how’s ktown tonight k-town?
What’s on my mind?
I appreciate both of newtonusr and Suzanne saying I’m esteemed here. That’s a treat I got for Halloween!
hey wmd — how ya been?
*laughing* i want a pair of those jammies!
chilly but dry up here. wind died down so it is a cool 46 outside. the wood stove has it a toasty 72 inside.
I said gnite at the bottom of the thread downstairs and just stopped up to make sure you heard it. G’nite!
On the other hand, I can watch The Three Stooges for hours straight, and I despise Kathy Griffin. So my taste may be suspect. ymmv
i saw it and replied even :) g’nite ktown.
Suzanne! When I come on Saturday nights and see these cartoonies, I juvenilize.
And, eCAHN, Happiest!
hey loohoo — i forking love searching through all the toons on utube looking for just the right one. takes me right back to being a kid again.
how’s socal tonight?
Ya gotta link for buyin’ them Krugman jammies?
Wow. That’s great. Thanks!
So sleep already. *g*
Sweet dreams.
hey ecahn — just when was your bday? (i’m a little slow on the uptake tonight)
I got them at the George Will traveling charity car wash and flea market, coming to a town in upstate NY soon.
I despise 3 Stooges. Reminds me too much of Rs.
ppppffffftttt or however the heck ya type a raspberry
Sure, but my way it’s about 125 million fewer.
The 29th. I was in NYC having a long drunken dinner with my son an a niece. Since I am so seldom in the city, I’ve let the cable-TV lapse, which means I don’t have an internet connection.
OK, stopping this train – great toon. The last 3 minutes are still cracking me up.
happy belated and crap. dare i ask how you are connected now?
I always wondered if Porky was a eunuch, or if it was a bodysuit. Sadly, Wikipedia is lacking this information.
;>)
It’s not the numbers (well at least not so much). It’s the behavior.
hey db — how’s the great white north tonight?
I’m mostly in mid-Hudson house, so I keep my cable there/here.
whoops never mind. i realized you were in the city
tis a forking great toon dood
Who’s on First? What’s on Second. WTF am I?
Aren’t they the best?!!
btw… until this toon, we did not know the name of slyvester.
3rd base
Good Night!
Um, think it may be a home run with bases full, but then, I might be hallucinating.
I’m kind of wistful, my mom’s memorial was last year on All Saint’s Day. Also psyched, I had to bail on my motorcycle club brothers and sisters last year (for obvious reason), this year I’m making good on cooking for our Day of the Dead ride.
And I’ve got a really good feeling from the job interview yesterday.
One of my favorite anecdotes about my home town of Bloomington happened on halloween. I was walking home from a party, a young man dressed as a pregnant roman catholic nun stumbled off the porch at another party and started puking. When I got closer I recognized him – it was the Dalai Lama’s nephew Jigme. His father Thubten Norbu taught at IU for many years.
This anecdote just tickles my iconoclastic funny bone too much. Must have been 1986 or thereabouts.
newtonusr: I’m with you on three stooges. Who is Kathy Griffin?
It’s wonderful tonight. Outside and in wearing short sleeved jams.
Trick or treat was somewhat slim pickings this evening. I blame the Conservative war on Halloween, myself.
;>)
Couldn’t find the Krugman jammies, but here’s the t-shirt
fingers and toes crossed for ya dood. jobs are forking hard to come by — my jen is still looking and steph has given up looking for a regular job and is looking at seasonal work during the holidays.
Great story!
And if you don’t know who Kathy Griffin is, you are better off.
• as I piss-off her fans everywhere •
Wow. How many spiritual cross links can you post in one comment? Spectacular.
fall nights in socal are among the nicest there are loohoo.
hey eg — how was your howl-o-ween?
Merci buttercups. Will send one to my wingnut son on his next bday (June).
That’s why it tickles my iconclastic funny bone. Bloomington was a special place to come of age.
you could always send it as a half-birthday present in december
I think Halloween was slow just like the rest of the economy. Everyone said, fuck it, I can spend $20 on candy or just turn the lights out. Gee, which??
Never knew that about the place. Will put it in my mental file cabinet, hopefully to pull out when appropriate.
Still trying to find candy on the nutrition chart. Peanut butter has protein, right?
Good eye!
Neatly folded right next to my Nouriel Roubini two-piece… did I say that out loud?
and there are so many organized ‘safe’ events for the kiddies to go to.
Or as an Xmas present. But I’ve just had a wonderful dinner with him, so don’t want to provoke him quite so soon. We both (without overt coordination) seem to be working on a 12-step anti-provocation program. This is a good thing.
i figure if it is good enough for the usda to hand out in emergency rations as protein.. reeses peanut butter cups count as a protein.
you will know when the time is right :) sometimes ya just have to agree to disagree and move on — the relationship is more important than the disagreement.
Roubini lunch NYABE on 11/10. Am attending.
Yes, especially if they’re staring a double-barrel Christmas in the face. A shame – I’m rather partial to the old Halloween spirit.
;>)
ooooooo
Right. And chocolate=longevity.
a total win win loohoo
Someone…somewhere…I read or heard on NPR???
No child has been poisoned from Halloween candy since it was first suggested in 1957.
Oh, teh son. If I’d known what to do, he wouldn’t be a wingnut.
*belatedly catches up to the late late thread*
kathy griffin? who dat? the name sounds vaguely familiar. I suspect i don’t want to know who she is. I benefit greatly from never watching tv except when family has on Rachel or Keith.
What’s on my mind? sigh. my life has sunk to new depths. last night i read an article on the Kardashians!, o sweet jeebus on a cracker, someone needs to do an intervention on me.
If true that is a fabulous refutation of fear mongering. What about razor blades in Halloween apples? I’ve always thought that was completely bogus.
Gotta love your ‘lil righties!
What are you going to do, for heaven’s sake, throw him in the dumpster? He’ll come around if you don’t push. (ignore)
hey ndfg — quick watch the toon up top. ya need some laughter grrrlll
This?
whoa whoa there—Paul Krugman footie pjs? Elucidate, willya?
It would be a win if it were believable!
You need to stay away from that hard journalism and get back to the breezy, lightweight political chats.
;>)
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight?
Don’t know how it’ll turn out, but prefer to be friends not enemies, regardless of political loggerheads. It’s just that in his political pronouncements, he’s soooo stooopid. It’s the wingnut email shit. I wouldn’t mind at all if he thought for himself. Then he’d be educable.
the academic supercomputing sys admin job I crashed and burned on in my second interview has been reposted. I crashed and burned by being honest when asked were I saw myself in 5 years – said my career path was towards a distinguished engineer doing technical performance work and I wanted to get back to that path as it motivated me. I also said I wasn’t really happy with pay discussion, they dropped $5K from what they said was their low ball offer and I shouldn’t have contrasted it with my previous compensation – they didn’t like 16% cut or my putting it in weekly pay terms.
For contract work they shouldn’t care about my long term goals and money issue is surmountable as well. So I kind of think that former prospective boss will get an email if the start up job doesn’t lead to an offer. I’ve got a feeling that there’s a use it/lose it funding issue which could get me work as a 1099 contractor there – they certainly know I can do the work.
The work I’d be doing at the start up is what I really have been looking for and it would put me back on track longer term. Feedback from yesterday was I’d hear back in a week, they thought I was well qualified technically and needed to talk with 2 other candidates before having me back. i was pretty clear that I want to be doing what the job requires. I feel like there’s a chance for my work to make the same kind of difference I made getting Sun equipment used to render Monster’s Inc. I’m proud of that work, I got Sun out of a big performance hole in a few weeks time analyzing and tuning Pixar’s code on site. very motivating.
I’m willing to do work that isn’t as good a fit, but very psyched that there have been some reqs a few places doing what I am best at and want to be doing.
she’s one of the sisters, yes.
For those who don’t know, they’re sisters in a reality show. About them. Think Paris Hilton but as brunette triplets, and without Paris Hilton’s brilliant intellect and decorous restrained behavior and modest dress.
hey margot
• suz, i’m in a spot of trouble with the PJ’s thing over here. little help? •
i suggest a full confession that you were snarking and offering up some of that candy you’ve been bogarting
Christ, you should be proud.
Had bbq next to a bunch of deputies late this afternoon. It was drizzling and they were hoping it would let up for the little kids and then start pouring.
Seems Sat night and Halloween isn’t a good combo for them.
doing something ya like doing right now sounds great. as you said as a contract employee ya don’t have those crash and burn issues.
please keep me posted
If a snark-tag is needed for a vision of me in footie pajamas, we are truly lost as a society.
That said… Sending Baby Ruth’s out to all the pups.
hey sunny — i heard this dry halloween up here broke a many year long-standing tradition of soaking wet halloweens.
*laughing* well we do get a very diverse crowd at late late nite
I’m still hunting longhandles with Joe Lieberman’s face on the flap.
it’s tough being an older professional looking for work – I know what I do, have expertise that I want to use.
Setting up supercomputing hardware is something and helping academic personnel with their software needs uses my expertise. And it isn’t the most productive use from my perspective.
whoa dood! i don’t think i’ve been on a thread with you before … i am now a wmd1961 fangirl.
My fave EVAH workstation was a Sun box when i was doing high-end pre-press work and idly dreaming of working at Pixar someday.
Awesome that you fix the programs that run on those high-end boxes. SQUEEEEEE! *gets a grip and stops acting like a geeky fan-girl*
Ohio: Dark and cooler, trending to light and warmer tomorrow.;)
Love the cartoon, how you find them I don’t know but am glad you do.
Hi Suzanne and everyone. Mr. Votus says Happy Halloween!
Oh, purrfect. Jammies with LIEberman on the flap.
i spend time surfing the utubes. kinda random play i start with one and then start checking out the ‘related’ and usually end up with something completely different than what i started out with.
tonight’s toon was different — i knew exactly what one i wanted and just had to find it.
hey mr votus — how was yours?
Certainly. Thanks for the good wishes.
Regardless of any prospects or offers I’m going to Supercomputing 2009 in Portland in 2 weeks. it’d be really nice to be able to expense the hotel and flight because I’m on the job, but regardless I need to network there and do research on where the industry is moving.
Ya know, with a little seed money….. They’ll be evergreen
Mr. V dressed as the Elephant Man, and it was laid back. I joined him in a V for Vendetta mask–loved it!
Open or closed, the difference will be hard to discern.
;>)
sounds like fun. dressed for a party or for handing out treats?
darkblack, you’re right. I’ve gotta stay away from that hard journalism. If i continue down that dark path, i might find myself reading an article about octo-mom or jon & kate. Can I sink that low? Stay tuned ….
Both, but we didn’t have many kids tonight–a neighbor said they all came by earlier tonight, and we were out.
Baby ruth history
http://www.usefultrivia.com/miscellaneous_trivia/candy_bar_trivia_008a.html
I’m an old (48) fat DFH. And single. I keep chickens, someone dumped a rooster on me back in June and I’ve not slaughtered it yet, so I can say my cock is disturbing people’s sleep in the neighborhood. :-) (it’s late night)
I also apparently managed to reply to myself. maybe it’s time for me to sign off – 93 was meant to respond to Suzanne at 81.
lard love a duck grrrlll, you are one step away from watching the duggards…..
LOL
OK, I accept candy and a virtual snark tag.
Won’t bring it up again /huge lie
Good luck.
hey emerson — how’s the east bay tonight?
better that than putting them to sleep…
sometimes that dayam reply button thingie just don’t work right. i’ve hit the wrong one or not hit it at all many a time.
pretty cool
I’ll bet! Could you discern whether they were they doing a rain dance?
You’ll find yourself arguing with complete strangers in check-out lines when you overhear their celebrity ringtone…No good can come of it.
;>)
Sounds like a tax write off at the very least.
(laughing) i think i was behind one of those at the fred meyer last week.
Amazing cartoon, Suz. What was Sylvester called before and when did he start talking?
What happened to kids trick or treating? I got zero kids for the 3rd time in 4 years. It used to be our favorite outdoors holiday.
That rooster has been the source of way too much juvenile humor.
he’s still young enough he’ll make good stew. he only started showing aggressive behavior in September. My best guess is he hatched in March and was mis-sexed at the hatchery. Once he was known to be a rooster the original owner decided to dump him and figured since I have hens he’d be alright at my house.
He’s not legal according to my zoning – I don’t have Ag zoning – hens are OK in unincorporated Santa Cruz county zoned Residential, roosters are not. So far I’ve been sliding… and I do intend to cook him before Thanksgiving.
he wasn’t called anything other than putty tat. i’m not sure about the talking….
Dawg help me…
So, are you having the neighbors over to help eat your cock?
It is a valid itemized deduction, unfortunately my taxes are mainly penalties for early withdrawal of retirement funds this year. If I do get some wage income (W2 or 1099) then it will be good for a $400+ deduction.
Not so I could see. Weirdest person there was an old monk, or so I thought, ’till I realized the huge cross around his neck was tinfoil.
He was holding the door for everyone entering or exiting and sticking out a basket asking money for the poor. It was kinda awkward and I asked the cashier what charity he was collecting for. Cashier said “himself… it’s a joke.”
Strange and awkward.
707
Oh for gawd’s sake.
My preference is to have a likely lass over for that meal. I’m leaning towards flemish stew in home made vol au vent puff pastry. You can imagine the different horrid juvenile puns available.
I almost hope I get a mis-sexed chick next time I get chicks so I can re use all the bad jokes.
“…um…we have plans…”
ahahahahaaaa! One of my coworkers has chickens, she had a big list of names before they arrived, kiev, casserole, pot-pie, marsala, kung pao, etc … her hubby didn’t think it was funny and nixed all the names but kung pao. The other hens are Aggie, Ethel, etc.
Good luck with the job stuff!
just think of all the pastry shapes ya could create for the old cock
Sounds creepy…
Thanks. I don’t name my hens… well the one aracauna that likes to cross the road has a name thanks to a neighbor… The others I just track by age and call them tamale or whatever.
LOL!
hahahah!
He’s likely under a year old, and as a barred rock (multipurpose breed) he should still be pretty tender (cornish cross are bred for meat production and slaughtered by 12 week).
The pastry shapes certainly go into my thinking as for his ultimate disposition on my table.
well, i gotta show my tv ignorance here … who or what are duggards?
those folks with 19 kids and counting
*wicked evil laugh*
I’ll update and link to a picture of the meal when it happens. It’ll be at my livestock/brewing blog.
Sometimes a rooster really is a cigar…
no, never mind.
thanks — are ya gonna warn the lovely lass ahead of time
gaaahhh! Mrs Clown Car!
No wonder i don’t know the name, they don’t show up in the celebrity mags my baby girl sometimes abandons around the house.
Or sometimes a pig really is a no, never mind.
Absolutely, it wouldn’t be urbane to do otherwise. I do realize there’s a certain tension between the juvenile humor and being suave… and I think I’ll be able to pull both off. Err, did I use a bad idiom there?
ya can play the chicken song for background music
Just about fell outa my chair when I saw that today.
White House Halloween pics are here.
hehehehehe ya gotta realize all these old cock jokes are brand new to me… i don’t have an old cock — or even a young one — around the house.
OMG!
I’m somewhat nonplussed (non plucked?) that newtonusr didn’t speculate about the method of slaughter… there’s just way too many bad jokes to be made.
In spanish, it’s known as “gallos humor.”
even i have standards. ask my witchdoctor if you don’t believe me.
I know. Two demerits for bmaz. But is it not seared in the brain?
I doubt newtonusr spends a lot of time thinking about how to slaughter birds.
I think Balkan Beat Box has to be in the mix somewhere just for the opening sample…
and emerson, that spanish pun is extremely funny.
and to merge the rural element with the hip urbane, he can ask his lady friend to do the Techno Chicken Dance!
Techno Polka! Seen at the Monsters of Yodel tour.
yay! oops no yodelers on that polka, techno yodeling has yet to arrive.
little red rooster
thanks wmd1961. I chalk it up to that extra hour of sleep I’ll be getting. *g*
Nice, has a very spooky feel to the video.
thanks — felt perfect for this halloween night thread
Aw, no demerits, teach. That funny deserves a pass.
I’ve been +0, going to get to +2, then sign off. Having some 10 cane rum on the rocks.
Classic.
that will get ya there (laughing)
i didn’t know you were in the santa cruz mountain. i loved my time there.
Beyond a pass, he deserves great applause!
wmd mentioned polka, which to me means Flaco, so here’s Hey Baby, Que Paso?
crikey thats a good one margot. haven’t heard that since i moved outta kpig territory
Mick’s expression about halfway through is priceless.
master of the universe grin. at what, 24?
1965 per the utube — hard to imagine they are still as strong as they were back then but he still has that motu grin in recent videos
That would make him 68 now? Imagine him hopping in the time machine, setting it for 2009, and having Keith open the portal?
whoa dood
Careful, Mick would have a coronary event.
Chicken dance is polka. KPIG is available on the net, FM stations in SLO, Chico as well as Freedom. And an AM station in the Eastbay.
My ex worked for KPIG as a production director. Her son, my former stepson, is another reason I really want healthcare fixed and have great affection for Sun – his brain stem glioma (inoperable tumor) was treated because Sun let me cover her and her children as my domestic partner (we weren’t married). Without that insurance I’m concerned about his continuing checks for tumor growth and necrosis in his healthy brain tissue due to radiation scarring. Since it’s been 8 years the main issue is getting him proper MRI scans to detect any new tumor growth.
i’ve listened to them on the net but it just doesn’t feel the same as when i had them on the local radio. when i go down to the bay area i catch the chico station if i go down 5. last time i was down in santa cruz, they had no on the air dj after 8pm. it was all the computer dj at nite. it had changed.
it was good of sun to let you do that. if ya get this contract job, will ya have any benefits?
the no late night DJ has quite a few people unhappy. laura ellen’s death was a big blow, she was good at standing up to corporate on that sort of thing. frank got some good spine stiffening from her on that (and gave her some help too). Laura lived an inspirational life with lupus
No benefits as a 1099 contractor. Which means I’d be eligible for a public option. Glass is obviously still half full of rum!
or at least put a lifetime ban on the micro close-up.
in 2013 *sigh*
and it’s good rum-very tasty.
yeah… regardless of 1099/w2 in the near future I ought to be w2 by 2013… i used the edit function to put some more KPIG insight up. I miss being part of that family they’re all good folks, even if corporate has some cranial rectal inversion problems.
i feared change would happen after laura ellen passed — she was so good at fighting the corporate man to keep kpig what it was. it really feels sad listening to them now.
Suzanne,
I think jane and I made nice a little bit at the other thread. I’m feeling less hostility all around, which is good… this place is one of my virtual homes and it irritated me to be falsely accused. Disagreements should be civil, I tried to keep it that way and I think that got acknowledged.
one more thing before i go
This week’s The Office – Michael Scott dresses for Halloween as…
Justin Timberlake.
nite you guys
good. this is a difficult form of communication and so much can get lost in the bytes.
keeping things civil helps facilitate the difficult discussions ahead of us.
g’nite newton
Suz, I almost forgot. I can view videos!!!
Great toon. Thanks.
woohoo
*snoopy happy dance* yay sunny!!!
Laura Ellen was the heart of the station, and it stayed the same through changes in corporate ownership thanks to her (New Wave was Hawai’ian owners, Mapleton is out of SoCal). She and her partner were good at keeping the station pure, with only one visionary in management it’s harder.
one KPIG thing I was bothered by – my partner the production director was adamant that non commercial radio sucks. I got her point that non commercial radio does have advertising “this program underwritten by” is advertising, and her pride in creating good spots was justified.
But for sheer quality of the music and news programming non commercial can be very good. And a friend that does program/music director work at a non-commercial community radio station said Laura Ellen didn’t have that chip on her shoulder, she recognized good programming regardless and praised stations like WWOZ in New Orleans.
Wow. Just how many Sat nights have there been? I sense a marathon coming on.
Night sleepers. Me too. Thanks again, Suz.
g’nite loohoo
if ya click on my name at the top of the post it will bring up in reverse chronological order every post i’ve ever done — the toons should be easy to find.
hard to fight that fight solo.
I got started on this kind of thing on usenet. No question that there are miscues that would never happen face to face.
I know I will defend my position a bit longer in text interactions, rather than just cutting to “this is a rathole, we should just agree to disagree rather than both get covered in more stink” at an early stage. There’s plenty of evidence that many people get into flame wars that don’t leave anyone looking good.
i’m fading. g’nite all and thank you for all the conversations and music tonight.
enjoy your extra hour
My rum is nearly empty. Thanks to all for the conversation, I’d been feeling alienated and I feel home again.
Sounds easy, thanks.
Think I’ll put it down for the night too. Going to check the farmers mkt in the am. Hoping for something besides pumpkins :-)
Boo!
Way EPU’d, but didn’t want to go OT in the ‘serious’ threads. If my notes are correct, tomorrow Nov 2 is Katymine’s birthday.
{{{{{{{{{Katymine, Happy Birthday!!!}}}}}}}}}
If anyone’s in touch with her, can they please pass this along?
