Yeah, all that’s holding the Republicans back is Glenn Beck and El Rushbo.
Many top Republicans are growing worried that the party’s chances for reversing its electoral routs of 2006 and 2008 are being wounded by the flamboyant rhetoric and angry tone of conservative activists and media personalities, according to interviews with GOP officials and operatives.
Congressional leaders talk in private of being boxed in by commentators such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh — figures who are wildly popular with the conservative base but wildly controversial among other parts of the electorate, and who have proven records of making life miserable for senators and House members critical of their views or influence.
Everyone, all together now: awwwwwwwwwww.
Quick quiz: which of the following wingnut media types do not engage in angry, flamboyant rhetoric? El Rushbo, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, G. Gordon Liddy, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levin, Bill Bennett. Because they were all spewing their hateful tirades when Republicans were winning elections and talking of permanent majorities.
Turd Blossom is right for once:
“The question will be whether the Republican candidates next year can talk about a lot of kitchen-table issues and the deficit and spending,” Rove said.
And that’s why Republicans are screwed. Because those Republican candidates will tell us that the Answer to Everything is smaller government, lower taxes, increased defense spending, and keeping the brown people out. Exactly what they said during the “angry white man” Gingrich 90s, exactly what they said when they ruled the country during the Bush/Cheney years, and exactly what they said in 2006 and 2008 when they got their asses bounced out of every level of government.
Being closely associated with two hugely unpopular clowns with substance abuse issues may not be helpful to an already reeling party, but it’s the failed policies and incompetent governance of the GOP that killed the GOP — not the wingnut media industry.

Dick Cheney snarling about Obama’s governing doesn’t help the GOP any either. Voters haven’t forgotten those dark years of war and spying on Americans.
Quick!! Call a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance.
Did you hear, the Repugnantcans have a new slogan. — Yes we Klan!
Which is why they are banking heavily on potential failure to enact a Democratic agenda. Sooner or later voters always get fed up with the incompetent clowns currently running things and decide to give the other incompetent clowns a go at it.
The biggest trouble is that when they are in power, the Republicans actually are competent… at implementing policies which are detrimental to the U.S. and the rest of the world.
Their one not so batshit crazy on-air personality, Joe S. always seems somewhat embarrassed by his teabagging birther colleagues. And that’s too bad. There’s nothing wrong with articulating conservative arguments. That’s just part of the democratic process.
But any sane Republicans left will be quickly marginalized by the Party’s “leaders” and will end up wandering in the wilderness for possibly generations to come. Or at the very least
severalmany more election cycles.Someone really should apologize to Rush!/s
He keeps saying that he’s not the leader of the R party but no one seems to have told the wingnuts – or the members of Congress either.
LOL
Then who is the GOP leader Sarah?
As was true with the past ten years of right wing dominance of the legislative branch, policy has nothing to do with the agenda of that Party of No. They don’t have any concept of ‘public service’, that stuff they said they’d do if they were elected. Shhhhh. Don’t tell them about ‘action’.
If there are sane Republics left, they must keep quiet. Any comments will require them to either leave the Party or govel before the great and powerful Limpy Limbaugh.
That’s the problem – they don’t have a leader and it surely isn’t Michael Steele. It’s interesting to watch because they have been so disciplined in the past and to see them flounder around is fascinating.
Just think, we’ve got a year to watch these people implode. Beck and Limpdick can’t do anything but get crazier to keep their ratings up. The fundie teabaggers will be running through the streets looking for heretics.
this is precisely what happens when batshite crazy people take to the airwaves:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/22/lia.shenandoah.killing/index.html
other batshite people kill people, as happened in PA to some poor guy guilty of the crime of walking down a street while brown.
This has got to stop.
does that mean we have to put up the barricades and stay indoors then? Let me know when it’s safe to go outside again….
Party of personal responsibility!
Gotta love the hypocrisy — they’re blaming Glenda and Rashbo while they repeat the exact same talking points.
I was on the CBSNews site earlier and someone posted a comment about how horrible! Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were and how they were connected to ACORN and the WH . . . and it was the very same jibberish — verbatim — that Joe Scarborough had been whining about on his Morning Joke show about an hour before!!!!
And now they’re dredging up the old Tricky Dick Enemies List stuff to try to paint the Prez with. Classic bullying tactic: accuse your enemy of the crimes you’re committing.
Just another excuse to blame the problem on those two. They have no ideas. End. Of. Story.
The GOP hates Brown People fine I want every GOP contributer who hires immigrants to get hit by INS. That and I want all the immigrants sent home with all their stuff and six months pay. Then lets see if Fox News brings up a single immigration story again.
Lower taxes just keep saying higher taxes only on the rich. The rich will go Gault and take their cash and jobs fine tariff Globalization does not work ask Tom Friedman’s wife.
However we do need a Real Job Stimulus plan 10% unemployment is to much.
Naw, they’ll be lookin’ for people with a big H branded into their forehead. O’Reilly will have provided a graphic of what that looks like on his show for his intellectually challenged viewers.
Limpy Limbaugh
Followed by a wink and pop!
True and confusing they seem to want to lose rather than do what they have to too win.
It’s all just a misdirection until John Bush steps into the light.
They have spent years and years embracing these lying hatemongers and now it is backfiring on them. What did they expect? Most of the country may be under educated today and most of the country may not pay close attention day in and day out, but when the only voices coming out of your Party are loud inciting fringe idiots, you attract only angry gullible idiots. The sane members of society have disassociated themselves from the GOP out of plain embarrassment.
Back to the cesspool.
Namaste
Tee hee. GMTA. I just did a diary on the same article, BT, but I only used one quote:
That is very easily the only sentence to appear in Politico that has made me smile.
Doesn’t that stuff still play well for Republics in the South?
Jeb ?
His real name is ‘John’.
I wouldn’t count out the republicans, especially since the dems have pretty much squandered their time in power.
The GOP can’t appeal to main stream America if the mainstream thinks they are the crazy uncle who watches Fox News, drinks beer and shoots squirrels while ranting about Obamacare and the New World Order.
Here’s the other problem: Newt and Friends wouldn’t know a kitchen table if it tried to argue with them.
The Rich Republicans have No Clue how the rest of America is being crushed under this recession. They have NO IDEA that most people want something done, even if it raises “the deficit” (which I’d bet about 99% of Americans would be very hard pressed to explain in any case.)
And as much as they might try to deny it, most people think “Rich White People” when they think of Republicans. You know, rich like bankers and Wall Streeters. God knows that crowd is about as popular as a communicable disease right about now.
And, their obsessing on the tv about wars and foreign adventures, I’m thinking, is also about as popular as salmonella. People want jobs, healthcare, and to know the roof isn’t going to cave in. I don’t see that changing any time soon.
When you sup with the Devil, bring a long spoon (and count your fingers after).
Small towns are still racist backwaters. My parents went to “Homecoming” in Lytle, Texas a couple of weekends ago, and couldn’t believe how ugly and vile the casual conversations were.
Enemies list! Ha! Saw a segment on CNN this morning (volume off) talking about O’s enemies list generated from those opposed to the auto bailout. Uhm…isn’t that called an action list? Like a list of people who you call to try to influence? Isn’t that what a competent leader does?
The Progressives are treated by the Democrats in much the same way as Rush/Beck, – what does that say?
The Republicans are suffering from the same problem that brought the Democrats down between 1985 and 2000. I’m not talking about the strident left, but the fact that most people don’t have time to engage seriously in politics, and only get involved when things turn really bad, as they did after 2004. The Thugs got away with political murder because they had a riled-up first time base in fundies and Old South anti-diluvians, and they took the rest of us by surprise (think Lee Atwater’s campaign in 1988). They still have their riled up base, but the penumbra of that base is now living hand to mouth on account of the recession and health care expenses, and they are tired, too, and ready to let someone else take the heat. So try as hard as they can, the Thugs cannot generate the kind of votes they need to take critical elections.
I think they will reform into a new party (perhaps with the same old name) faster than most people think. Their is a sold core of Broderism out there — the latest incarnation of George Babbit, that will restore the Republicans and their everreplenished widow’s cruze of ignorance and selfishness.
I’ve got to admit, the thought has occurred to me more than once that we will all be laughing out of the other side of our mouths if/when the rethugs choose Stanley McChrystal or Petraeus as their standard bearer. We might want to take some time to plan what to do in that case.
Oh, and btw, the current admin has only been in office for about 9 months now, right? So why are we already saying “dems have pretty much squandered their time in power.”? Eh, jwill5587?
Agreed.
I have a hard time believing that because they are so rigid. “I’m right; you’re wrong, end of discussion.” If they change, they lose their lunatic base. Then what? No votes and no one constantly stirring the pot. I would just love to see tea parties raging against the “liberal” Republicans.
No doubt they’ll call it the National Christian Front or something terrifying and membership will come with arm bands and a signature salute.
Such tea parties will never happen because the whole movement is fake. It’s manufactured by Fox News and groups fronted by people such as Dick Armey. There’ll be no raging against Republics from the likes of them.
There is a political infrastructure in the Republican Party already. It would be easier, IMO, for a rational set of people to step in and snatch power away from the leftovers that are running the R Party now than to create a new party.
For Twain @42
Although…I’d be much happier if the so-called moderates from the R Party got together with the odious Blue Dogs and formed a new party together. Let the Democrats have the Democratic Party back.
That would be the perfect thing. HoJo could be their standard bearer.
Since he can’t have his NFL plaything, Limpy Limbaugh is not giving up his poitical party toy.
The first problem the Republicons have is if they were ever honest about their true agenda, they’d find themselves hanging from lampposts throughout the country.
Eisenhower’s Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, admitted:
“… somehow we find it hard to sell our values, namely that the rich should plunder the poor.”
William Kristol confirmed this much more recently when he said:
“[Among conservatives] there’s been too much pseudo-populism, almost too much concern and attention for, quote, ‘the people’…. After all, we conservatives are on the side of the lords and barons…. We…are pulling up the drawbridge against the peasants.”
So, the Republicans are left with nothing to do but to engage in fearmongering, lie blatently about the intent of their legislation when in power, and use lies, slander, derision, and character assassination to try to make their opponents look as bad – if not worse – than they, themselves are.
This usually works, because the Democrats have historically been far less willing to dive into the festering cesspool from which people like Karl Rove, Ken Melmann, the late Lee Atwater, and most of the current Republican leadership, pundits, talk-show hosts, and wackaloon websites and issues groups are so comfortably ensconced as they heave their buckets of steaming, liquid pig sh*t at anybody who dares to disagree with their radical and reactionary views, or dares to get in the way of their abject service to their plutocratic masters.

You betcha
Carnival barker Beck an Rush (for the money) Limbaugh are not journalist or commentators. They are leaders of the left behind and the right turn only set.
See Virginia, in two weeks.
And it partly be my fault I guess, cause I ain’t voting for Deeds. Just not gonna do it. And this complete fundie, wingnut is going to be Governor of Virginia.
Bank on it.
The GOP is far from dead. In fact, the latest “generic” Congressional polling I saw had them within 3 points of Democrats.
Write off the GOP at your own peril.
Oh, and I forgot the most important part.
After the GOP does win in Virginia, THAT’s going to be THE NEWS all over the media for at least a week, probaly longer. Gotta reinforce the idea that the GOP is still alive as much as they can, so they can in fact remain alive. It’s great when you own the media.
I, too, am unwilling to write off the rethugs.
They never, ever, never stop going for the jugular. They were a party of the dead who were brought back to life by the phoney-baloney tea party crap and, I can’t even get started on, Glen Beck.
They are harping 24/7 about the dangers to the country being caused by the muslim, nazi, radical marxist, socialist Obama and the left.
They have their minions worked up and frothing at the mouth – they will show up in droves to vote.
Will we?
I would elect swine flu to be my legislator before any of these crack head Repubs.
The demographics alone are against their returning to power. Significant power, that is.
