As a followup to my post yesterday on the media’s enabling the career of Michele Bachmann, I decided that it was only fair to give you a rundown of the persons set to challenge her for her seat next year.
Elwyn Tinklenberg, who wasn’t given much of a chance to beat Bachmann last year, capitalized on a streak of particularly crazy behavior from her that saw hundreds of thousands of dollars enter his coffers from netroots donors — money that attracted the attention of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which belatedly threw some monetary and other support to Tink. However, it was too little and too late to unseat the well-entrenched Bachmann, who has a nationwide following to rival Sarah Palin’s among reality-challenged Republican base voters.
This year it’s a different story. While Bachmann, blessedly free of any serious primary challengers, has the New York Times and the delusional GOP base in her corner — and has the campaign warchest to prove it — the two DFLers most likely to face her haven’t exactly been sitting still.
Tarryl Clark is the more progressive of the two, a state senator representing the city of St. Cloud, and is an unabashed Democrat, a longtime legislator and veteran of state and local politics, and a supporter of stem cell research, reproductive freedom (a fact that Bachmann’s anti-choice backers have noted; they’ve ignored the other DFL candidates in the race and concentrated on attacking Clark) and unions. She’s helped start a local Habitat for Humanity chapter and worked with troubled teens. Noted for her formidable political skills, her entry into the race was enough to cause El Tinklenberg to decide not to attempt another run. (She’s also the other woman in the graphic that graces this post. You know, the one with sandy blonde hair and a sane and humane expression on her face?)
In contrast, Dr. Maureen Reed is a relatively late entrant to the Democratic Farmer-Labor party, and to politics in general, having got most of her previous political experience in 2006 from running for lieutenant governor on the Independence Party ticket. In fact, many IP supporters were puzzled by her decision to challenge Clark in the 2010 Democratic primary, feeling that she should have instead tried to run for governor herself under the Independence Party banner. Also in contrast to Senator Clark, her stance on reproductive freedom is not clear, even after MinnPost’s Eric Black tried to pin her down on it; she has been equally cagey on whether she intends to abide by the DFL endorsement and withdraw from the race, should Clark win the endorsement (which is all but certain). This all has caused speculation that her candidacy is in fact intended to be a spoiler one, roughing up Clark in the primaries and siphoning enough votes from her in the general to guarantee a Bachmann win, much as Bob Anderson, the IP candidate in 2008, functioned by siphoning votes from Tinklenberg.
Fasten your seatbelts, gang — the next year is going to be interesting!

Mornin’ PW, my buddies in Bachmann’s district are already practicin’ their door knocking skills.
And a stealth Republican-plant candidate? Gee, we’ve never seen that anywhere before….
Go, Clark!
I’m sure Tinklenberg is a capable and nice person but his name makes me want to laugh rather than vote for him. I’m sorry if that rescinds my membership as a leftie but the truth is that in this age of advertising, brand names are everything. Ex Lax has a better sound to it than “Colon Drip”. Barak Obama might have started out as that guy with the funny name but he overcame it with a personality and message that made his name into a brand. Let’s face it, “Barak Obama” has an edgy cool sound to it that a more comical name like “Tinklenberg” won’t acquire. Sorry, it’s the truth.
So Michele will likely have two races where the Dems vote is split in the general election? How are the voters in Michele’s district feeling about these funny odds?
Barack Hussein Obama you understate just how much he had to work against.

Tell me when Michelle’s people read the bible what part of Give up all of your goods to the poor if you would follow me does not sound like Socialism?
I guess I never saw his name as comical or cartoonish.
Does the ultimate winner of the election have to receive more than 50% of the vote or is it the candidate with the greatest number of votes? ie. is there a runoff if no one receives 50%?

I want to see this study Yes I’m sure Michelle’s people hate the poor but Sarah’s crowds which transformed the John McCain Presidency did scream about Barack Hussein Obama, they did say he was a secret Muslim you can be Prejudice about other things like religion, socialism etc as well as race.
so carville and greenberg have figured out what I knew when I was a 4 buck an hour cook when I was 20 when I had dropped outta my poli sci degree boston college world … cuz I was piling on debt debt debt, being in an on welfare family, and having a poli sci degree to be a indentured cook was scary.
maybe we should all send stan and jim some money so they can continue illuminating, emanating, pontificating, and ruminating!
by the way, I too want to get paid like jim and stan, so how about I give advice like jimmy and stan baby – cower in your diapers, cuz no matter what you do the liars will lie (see Cleland, Max) and then the middle will be scared, and then we’ll lose!

1st FDL post.
opps! I was 20 in 1980.
I learned WYSIWYG on a typewritter, and, I still can’t edit worth a shit until I print / publish (and cringe!!!)
rmm.
Well your sane the GOP however loves mean humor that puts people in out groups down.
The vision of Sarah’s chanting followers at John McCain rallies screaming Obama Ossama is still with me. I am sure Michelle will link her opponent to Obama in the exact same way Sarah did.
I do not believe that it would be possible to conduct an accurate poll of this. Such a poll would be one on one where a
hypocriticalrespondent would be reluctant to articulate views that are racist etc.. Get them together with their likeminded however and the crap feeds upon itself.I am disputing Carville and Greenberg’s idea that this GOP anger is not racism. But yeah the Democratic Party Leadership is not known for being Bold, Predicting the future or making a stand on Principle. However ever since the blogs got on the case I don’t think the Dems have had to worry about another Max Cleland cause we not Rahm have been playing attack dog and instant response to GOP lies.
I do know how you feel $5.50 an hr Mcdonalds manager, delivered newspapers a few years B.A philosophy.
Welcome Seabos84 – many of us are similarly challenged
Reed is not a DFLer, she’s a mole. She was the lieutenant-governor candidate on IP candidate Peter Hutchinson’s engineered-to-defeat-Hatch pro-Pawlenty campaign in 2006. It doesn’t seem like Reed is in the campaign for any other reason than to re-elect Bachmann.
All the Independence Party has been since Ventura left is a stalking horse for the GOP.
‘member when she said Obama blew his wad at an orgy ???
So why not try to poll the group reaction then as you suggest after all
If they all chant Obama Ossama then they are Racist I don’t care if they only chanted because they wanted to fit in.
Polling of groups by observing unnoticed the groups actions this could be Big it is brilliant.
This sounds like Rove split the moderate vote (Ralph Nader comes to mind) so you can elect a crazy who can only win in a three person race.
It would still lack statistical validity as their percentage of their universe could only be guessed.
No got a link? I hope the Dem Candidate uses all of Michele’s quotes against her we need to target the GOP crazy and show the Crazy is the reason they lose,
I wonder if the National Dems are going to get some money in this race. Getting money was the reason to compromise with the drug companies and insurance companies on healthcare right?
So lets see what all this compromising has gotten the Dems.
The way to confront this is to either create the view that this person is in reality a republican or to create a right leaning party to fight fire with fire.
It’s hard to understand how a state that gave us Gene McCarthy, HHH, Fritz Mondale, Paul Wellstone, Al Franken, et als. can also produce such a fucktard. Now, I realize everybody I just mentioned was a product of statewide elections while Bachman is not. But still……………. Actually, know what? As I’m, typing this I realized. it has nothing to do with MN. i don’t see how anyplace including South Carolina – can elect such a fucktard like Bachmann. What really embarrasses the shit out of me is that she’s a lawyer. What a fucking disgrace to the profession.

It was about the time those morans were finding out that people were goofing on them when they referred to them as “teabaggers.” And she comes out and says the government was engaged in an “orgy” of spending and “spent its wad” by April 26th.
Are you saying they are Crazy but what if their make believe world is consistent? Michelle seems fixated on Obama, Socialism, Abortion Camps etc her ideas are imaginary however they are consistent so we can get poll results that record her as against Obama for imaginary reasons and those results should be valid statistically tomorrow and the next day.
Its the hate of Obama the Poor, Democrats thats consistent its the reasons why/delusions that are not.
Given that Michelle and the Governor have both benefited from this trick telling people the third party candidate is a GOP plant should work.
Not to mention the near win of Norm Coleman.
I missed the one about abortion camps. taxpayer funded, no doubt. Will they be compulsory for some people?
I’m surprised she has not said some crazy lies on the floor of the House and then got taken away to a mental hospital. A homeless guy saying the weird stuff she does I hope would be help and evaluated at a Mental Hospital.

I could go with either head line.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Phoenix Woman and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
The corruption of Minnesota politics and the weakness of the DFL are gunna be exposed in the 2010 elections. The Independence Party is the reason thatthe people of Minnesota were treated to 4 years of Jessie the Bullethead and 8 years of Tim the Friendly Facist Pawlenty. Further, the Independence Party and their brain trust of Al Tinklenberg and Dean Barkley were able to manipulate knuckle draggin’ pseudo feminists and play to the corrupt old guard in the DFL establishment to weaken Al Franken and almost get Coleman elected. The triangulation of the DFL base in Minnesota has succeeded in solidifying and legitimating the fascist fringe of Minnesota politics for over 12 years and it won’t end until the DFL Party leadership declares war on the Independence Party and exposes ‘em as a functioning part of the Republican Party. What has happened over the last 12 years is that instead of facing these people and their quiet money and support from Minnesota’s plutocracy, the DFL leadership has played footsie with ‘em in order to bury the progressive and working class base that has been so inconvenient for ‘em over the years.
The DFL leadership has sold out the progressive base of the party and tried to triangulate the greater mass of Minnesota voters out of politics entirely. Until there is strong progressive leadership that is willin’ to take on the Independence Party there will be no democratic (lower case) politics in Minnesota and Michele Bachman will define the political landscape of the state.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, IT’S THE SAME OLD GAME!!
Norm was in a three way race two? If so this is no accident.
Sorry money for abortions and camps to reeducate people my bad.
This is the point we need to hammer the voters with!
I thought it was the school health clinics that would have the abortions performed and the girls on the school bus at the end of the day and that the camps were for freedom loving amurikans
Tarryl Clark looks great PW better than Michelle, Sarah, Coulter, Malkin I expect the GOP to say she was chosen for her looks and down play her experience.
I want our side ready with Michelle quotes to show her experience .
I would like to see billboards going up now to warn motorists that they are entering the home district of Michele Bachman, the biggest wacko in congress and the people who elected her.
We need to come up with our band of idiots something like this
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/16/theres-a-rep-for-that-fak_n_324151.html
Yes as a Brown person who might be mistaken for a Secret Muslim I think billboards would be a great use of tax payer dollars!
Or how about a computer real estate map that takes into account and puts a negative future value on racism like cross burning, and living in Michelle’s district GOP voters love their property values.
A rumor that banks are giving voters in Michelle’s district less value for their homes because Michelle’s crazy rants got potential home buyers thinking Meth Labs, Cross Burnings and Inbreeding would be believed by Michelle’s conspiracy theory base.

Sounds like a Tarryl Clark campaign slogan.

MN is still more progressive than most states in many ways, especially in the cities of Minneapolis & St Paul. I lived there for years.
It’s a shame about Maureen Reed. I didn’t realize what was going on. Reed has been on Twitter for months proclaiming herself as DFL opponent to Bachmann. Reed is officially kicking off her campaign in Anoka today.
The thing about Bachmann & MN is that she represents a particular type of Minnesotan. The cities of Minneapolis & St Paul would never vote for her. The cities are largely Dem & diverse. But white people who are not interested in living in the Dem & diverse cities flock to the suburbs, especially the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities. These people are typically suburban or small-town folk. You see a lot of pickups & SUVs. And they are the voters for Bachmann. I don’t believe she could ever be elected to a statewide MN office. The people in the cities think she’s crazy.
Citizen NCGal:
The only way Minnesota gets rid of Bachmann is through redistricting…the district as now configured is a wholey owned protectorate of the Catholic Church. Indeed, the Catholic Church is a much bigger player in Minnesota reactionary politics than any other single force …after all it’s got more money even than all the rich families that have run the state since the 1880′s.
Bachmann is the poster child (or is it nut job) for the bat-crap crazies that make up the largest segment of todays GOP.
Should the vote-weilding morons in her district re-elect this bible thumpin’ wild-eyed looney then they will get the caliber of representation in DC that they deserve. And along with the that these voters will become the focal point and the butt of jokes about her as well. After all “stupid is what stupid does” says Forrest Gump but I prefer “Only in America”. After all, being intellegent was never a criteria for getting a voter registration card in the good ole’ US of A…
Tinklenberg is not a “weird” name in Cental Minnesota. Take a look at the phone book for St. Cloud, MN and you’ll see a lot of last names from a different ethnic heritage than you are familiar with.
