Bearfoot is surprising.

NASA completely flubbed the cams for the visual impact… I was kicked off the mtn 2 1/2 hrs prior to impact… Cost me half a night’s pay… Ironically, I got home 5 mins prior to impact and I was yelling at the TV to have them lower the cam a mere degree and they’d have caught the plume… Altho the plume didn’t rise but a few meters above the crater’s walls…!

I’m off to sit up with The Sweetie for a while. She’s got a cold and feels punk.

UC and CSU are entirely separate systems. UC has the research mission, CSU has a teaching and pedagogy research mission. That was codified in the Donahoe Act of 1960 (a/k/a the California Master Plan for Higher Ed). Basically, the CSU campuses were screwed because they didn’t get a seat at the table. Clark Kerr (then President of the UC system) masterminded the whole thing.

SDSU is the exception: they were locked out of offering doctorates by the Donahoe Act, so they did it with postdocs instead. I’m really surprised more schools didn’t follow that model: there are real advantages to hiring postdocs instead of graduate students. They’re a little more expensive, but much more capable and require much less in the way of system resources.

I saw an interesting t.v. interview by Charlie Rose. He spoke with a Harvard professor on political philosophy and morality. The man discussed different aspects of our thinking wrt certain political positions and ways of thinking.

He raised an interesting question about how a society functions based on how the moral understanding of it’s people decides some basic questions.

For example, here in America we have a larger divide between the rich and poor than any time since 1929. I wonder, do the Rich in other places in the world emulate us, use us as an excuse or just do as all Rich do. In Moscow, Buenos Aires, Islamabad, Riyadh, London?

What morality says it’s alright to deny healthcare to a child while the Rich have no similar problems? What morality is that?

What morality says it’s alright to deny a people a livelihood and thus require them to work in the black market (perhaps selling drugs) just to survive?

I don’t seek to indict anyone, but there are less than perfect arrangements in many places in the world and we all must be open to discussing them and trying to find better ways to function for ourselves and future generations.

Have you ever seen a child smile and laugh when they have stolen something and they think they’re getting away with it. I saw that with adults when the Republicans (and Bush) were in charge of the U.S. gov’t. I also saw it tonight.

Tonight I watched Tzipi Livni give a speech to the Knesset in Israel. Her opposition, including Netanyahu, were smiling, laughing, sometimes yelling out to disrupt her speech and generally acting like bratty children. Didn’t their parents teach them to behave? I can’t help but think their political system is as broken as California and the people are a bit too placid (or tired) to protest and force change. They may be able to bear it for now, but it only makes me admire some Iranian protesters more for their courage and it makes me wonder what change in the lives of typical Israelis would encourage them to begin thinking that this dysfunctional government is really unbearable. Sure sure there are Katoushkas hitting southern Israel, but what will change their overall view from military defense to peace offense.

On the one hand the hard Right feel SECURITY is everything and they shouldn’t negotiate with anyone or even talk. Livni said you can do that to protect Israel, but in the end LOSE ISRAEL with that policy. She said what they needed was leadership with a vision for a lasting security found in peace with their neighbors.

But, as I said, Netanyahu and his colleagues just laughed and talked to one another. Can they hear? How much public noise would there have to be for them to realize another direction is needed. Already Livni won the popular vote. Can Netanyahu hear her or others in Israel who want a lasting peace instead of just more missiles, tanks and rifles?

The clock is ticking.

I speak with more and more old friends who own small businesses these days… most of them have been in business for at least ten, often twenty or more years.

All of them have told me they are not health insured because of the price. These hard working folks are no longer living “middle class” lifestyles.. you can see it in their eyes, their demeanor… haven’t been for several or more years. You know what that means for any employee they have.
