It’s starting to look more and more like Texas governor Rick Perry orchestrated an effort to thwart a state probe into an arson investigation that may have led to the execution of an innocent man.
Sam Bassett — the former chair of the Texas Forensic Science Commission, who Perry declined to reappoint last month — is now saying that Perry’s aides tried to pressure him over the direction of the inquiry his panel was conducting into the steps that led to the 2004 execution of Cameron Todd Willingham for arson. Perry, as governor, signed off on the execution, despite clear evidence that the investigation was flawed.
And Burnt Orange Report notes that Perry may be hiding the smoking gun.
Texas Governor Rick Perry is refusing to release documents that could show whether or not he considered or even read the information sent to him on the day of the execution of Todd Willingham informing him that there was new evidence casting doubt on Willingham’s guilt and raising the question of whether Texas was about to execute an innocent man.
Perry is facing a primary challenge from Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who has publicly criticized his recent ass covering actions in the Willingham case.
Stay tuned.

Aw, now, let’s be fair. With all the people who are executed in that slaugherhouse that Texas calls a correctional system, it’s not reasonable to expect the governor to keep track of a little thing like potential innocence.
I realize there’s an aspect of “man bites dog” to this story (Texas executes innocent man; water still wet) — but these actions by Goodhair are so brazen, it’s pretty shocking.
To your rhetorical question:
Yes
Hey Goodhair! Ya probably ought to check out getting a brain under that goodhair.
Innocent? Guilty? Who cares–killin’ people sells well with the Republican base. Well, as long as they aren’t fetuses.
Texas Governor Rick Perry is refusing to release documents….
and that always plays so well in a campaign….
and gosh BT, I’m simply heartbroken (:D) Perry has ensnared our Wilco DA in to his web of deceit- enjoy the um, sunlight Mr Bradley
Gosh, you don’t think that someone who might have hired somebody to do a little insurance specialist work on the Governor’s mansion in order to get something a little more palatial built by the ol’ cronies (with all the loot from the original digs conveniently removed and stored safely, natch) would stoop to covering up a bit of murder now?
Why, I never.
;>)
If execution is so great (the TX philosophy), why is Gov. Goodhair trying to hide anything?
pro life? responsibility?
Talk about yer coverup – CNN: Perry removes 4th member of panel probing execution
Rick Perry is refusing to release documents that could show whether or not he … even read the information sent to him on the day of the execution of Todd Willingham….
gotta say = that’s where my money is.
Things like that are for the little people.
thanks eg,
Evans would be the designated Defense Atty required by the Commission’s charter
This is sickening. How do you brazenly use your office to commit and then conceal state murder?
This was the story yesterday on CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/11/texas.execution.probe/index.html
Look at that family pic. This story could very well grow legs on MSM and come back and bite Hang’em High Perry.
Whats the word on the ground in Texas is this story getting coverage?
I thought Rick Perry had the “Goodhair” exemption. Doesn’t that apply to murder, too? Am I misinformed?
BT’s last link in the post is from the Houston Chronicle. there is now regular coverage in Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas Papers
I would imagine it’s a big yawn in TX, but perhaps that’s my prejudice showing.
Odds are that Gov. Perry, like Shrub, never read the new material in the appeal for clemency, but dismissed it out-of-hand as another defense lawyer’s gimmick to delay the inevitable. Someone later discovered this was not business as usual and now it’s Perry who’s on the hot seat for having been brutally thoughtless, for pulling a Palin and not doing his job.
The facts must be bad if Hutchison is using them against Perry. She wouldn’t be any more compassionate as governor; she just wants what Rick’s got.
Hutchison: Something about stones & glass houses, though she hasn’t yet had her chance in the execution decider seat.
Local ABC and NBC affiliates covered it on their noon news.
The fact that a high profile (Republican) political opponent is using it against him should help keep it in the spotlight.
If Perry gets clipped on this deal, is it possible that a precedent could be established which might apply to executions carried out during the Bush years? My recollection is that Shrub was partying with the switch like it was 1850. If only…
the only people who should be allowed to throw stones are those who are trapped *inside* a glass house. h/t/ Demetri Martin.
I remind those of you not too familiar with Texas politics – that Perry is the result of Rove working to improve on his Bush model
Yep, I missed that on first scan of post.
Heh.
No statute of limitations on murder, she said, knowing that does not apply to officially sanctioned murder.
The whole system is designed to green light, not impede executions. Hutchison would likely have done the same thing as Perry in not delaying the sentence. It is only the cover-up (if anything) that will sink him.
Isn’t Texas a crime-free paradise because of all the executions they do?
Top of the fold, “Ex-forensics panel chief says Perry’s office pressured him”
Of, course it’s in smaller print than, “Cowboys 26, KC 20(OT)”
Priorities /s
Will be after they complete the border fence. /s
Not yet, because they haven’t executed all the bad guys. But surely if they keep on doing it, and a little bit harder & faster, paradise will soon be established.
surprised. AFAIK, nobody died in the Cowboys’ game.
Won’t be paradise until the Rapture, when all their naked asses go flyin’ up to Hebbin.
Beatings will continue until morale improves.
Could be the reason he is so enthusiastic for Texas secession. He would be the only law in his new ‘country’.
Just the asses? I guess I missed that theological update.
Aren’t many profootball players brain dead?
Any way we can accelerate the rapture? Get rid of ‘em sooner rather than later.
Yep, if you’re standing next to somebody when they get Raptured, don’t look up.
Actually, that’s one of the themes of Blumenthal’s R Gommorah, which I just finished reading this morning.
as been said here before, when The Rapture comes – Don’t. Look. Up.
There is a recent study about a higher rate of dementia in former players.
dammit — lost to the quicker fingers again.
Your beverage of choice?
Don’t worry, people in high places are working on it.
That’s going to create major traffic jams in Texas. Might just make it on the evening news…
Lots of comments about coverage from different people who I assume watch tv read different papers thats good the entire MSM is covering the story except maybe Fox. Still who does Fox like more GoodHair or Kay? Which GOPer will they spin for in a GOP civil war?
And why is Kay going after GoodHair a fellow GOPer’s job Senator, Governor both got status and perks Governor is a better place to launch a Presidential bid but does Kay really think she has a shot?
If it makes any difference, I type with more than my fingers. :)
Diet Pepsi, please.
Couldn’t be any other way. All that battering gotta have an influence. Maybe they should soak their heads in ice water after every time on the field.
Then Fox News will back the Governor?
on the way – and – TMI…
She’ll be 69 in 2012, so she hasn’t got a shot.
The former players I’ve met didn’t seem more demented than average. Had a lot more chronic pain, though. Guess I’m lucky, I got that without playing football.
Then why fight Perry a fellow GOPer for a job when she already has one? Inside Texas politics is not my thing could she be afraid of loosing her Senate seat?
NFL Players
Senate seats are bolted down?
I know many Illini fb players from the early-mid 70′s and you are right but that next step up is a killer.
I’m not surprised. If I had kids I’d try to steer them toward other sports.
Again, you ask me a Q that’s above my pay grade. But maybe she reveals all on her gov website. On which, I happen to notice that TX first responders’ uniforms are PINK!
I worked for former Illini/Bear Stan Wallace. His history of football related surgeries was quite impressive.
curiouser and curiouser -
Ernest Hollis was exonerated in fall 04, just before being executed based on the same outdated forensics as Willingham.
there were also the issues of incompetent defense counsel, possible drugging of the defendant by local police, and the no small matter of another inmate confessing to the crime – but clearly the state was well aware of how unreliable and outdated the forensics were at the time of Willingham’s appeals
Which group gets more surgeries per capita: football players or Hollywood sorts?
I saw a halftime show once in which a physicist analyzed the variables and concluded that a typical quarterback sack is comparable to falling off a 13 foot wall. I’ve seen quarterbacks get sacked 8 times or more in a game. Has to take a toll.
frankly we chicken fried dfh’s don’t give a rip why she’s doing it – we are just looking forward to watching the two of them rip one another to the point of voter antipathy in hopes of getting a Dem gov.
Dunno but players get more for the purpose of retaining or regaining basic functions.
Exactly my point.
Who’s the D candidate and does he have a chance?
Saw the link she is against healthcare that might cost her votes but isn’t GoodHair also against the public option?
A strong GOP Primary fight between 2 high level GOP office holders only benefits us as the GOPers bring each other down in the media during the Primary and spend money on the Primary that could have been used in the General Election.
Money that the National GOP party could use if Perry and Kay only had to worry about a Dem candidate in the General election.
The National GOP knows this why are they letting it happen?
Never been much of a glutton for punishment, myself.
Kam is an old friend and my dad knew Stan quite well.
Knowing the why helps predict the next plus the real story is sure to be Snark to my ears. Still your right enjoy this gift from the GOP Texas Dems.
Now then do we have Good candidates for Senate and Governor if they do destroy each other?
And that’s nothing compared to what wideouts get going over the middle.
Well, I did put a nice gash in the top of my head about 10 days ago, pulling a dead branch out of a tree, which broke in the process & came crashing down. But typically I try to avoid such mishaps. *g*
Cam was my supervisor at Sportsworld. He’s still around although I haven’t seen him since 2008.
That why god made steroids.
Ow, need stitches?
When I was six I got a gash on my head, my dad came in and looked at it and said, “We’re going to have to take you to the hospital to get that sewn up.” All I knew about sewing was that my mom did it with an old Singer sewing machine. I figured they had one at the hospital about 20 feet tall. I told him I thought I’d be okay but wasn’t able to get out of going…
there’s a small herd of ‘em right now (former DA and DeLay Ronnie Earle is mentioned) personally, I like Gilbert so far, but need to do some reading over at Burnt Orange.
and again, if Cheerleader Kay and Goodhair make their evisceration of one another splashy enough, we’ve got a shot
I knew there had to be a reason.
Loved your story of “stiches.”
It hurt like hell for about a minute after the rather large branch hit. But then I went on with my pick-up-sticks chore until I felt something gooey on my neck & realized it broke the skin. Panicked briefly, but then continued. Took a shower a couple of hours later, which resulted in only small seepage, so I figured it was OK. Scabbed up nicely (my cleaning lady, who’s a nurse for the VA, took a look at it the next day), and since it’s under my hair, I figured it didn’t matter if I had a scar.
LOL that is a cute story.
Well, one can hope. Ronnie Earle would be nice irony. BTW, why has his case against Delay never gone to court?
Fresh Jane
Harwood Confirms: Comment Came from “Obama Advisor”
A GOP civil war in Bush’s home state the why is unknown two GOPers with good jobs are going to start tearing it up but the MSM is not asking why the GOP is destroying itself in Texas a state which Bush and Rove should have wired.
Why are they allowing this to happen they could cut big donor cash to either one if they wanted too.
Could it be they can’t?
Maybe the divided Democrat Meme with bloggers on one side and the WH is not the story the Bush machine losing control in Texas.
If the GOP can’t enforce party discipline in Texas then where can they enforce party discipline?
I ran into him at the Red Lion Reunion a couple of summers back. It’s Cam huh. . .always thought Kam’s was named after him.
This has really been one of the most horrifying stories of late. Isn’t there cause for the DOJ to step in? This is so much like the old South that it is literally NOT FUNNY.
Glad to hear it wasn’t too serious.
It was, although if Stan thought changing one letter would steer his boy away from beer it didn’t work…
Thanks. It sure was a surprise though. Can’t count the number of times I’ve done the same thing with no consequences.
Ha! Was/is Stan’s Gridiron next door?
I only learned about the Gridiron after the fact. I thought maybe it had been in the same location but don’t really know.
Sign the petition to Governor Rick Perry and the State of Texas to acknowledge that the fire in the Cameron Todd Willingham case was not arson, therefore no crime was committed and on February 17, 2004, Texas executed an innocent man.
They’ve been executing innocent people in Texas for years. They have had dozens of cases overturned recently because of new DNA tests. It is highly probable that many of the previous executions in Texas were also done on wholly innocent people.
I lived in Texas when Bush was governor and at that time, the appeal system was definitely stacked against anyone who was on death row. Once you’ve been convicted, the odds are that you WILL be killed no matter what evidence emerges or what kind of errors occurred in the original trial. At that point it ceases to be a system of justice and becomes one merely concerned with executing people. I’d be willing to bet that anywhere from 5-10% percent of all executions in Texas have happened to people innocent of the crime for which they were sentenced to death. That should be W’s enduring legacy.
Perry should go to jail for obstruction.
Whaddaymean “trying to?” He’s been doing a good job of it so far and this isn’t the only case where innocent people have suffered to advance Goodhair’s agenda.
What Gasman just said.
It hasn’t been settled yet, but keep your eye on the Texas Observer and you’ll get about all the political news (none of it fit to print) out of Texas that there is.
