I realize that this is not a particularly polite thing to say, and is certainly not Civil Discourse. But what the hell? What the hell is one supposed to say in response to this class of thing, except, you’re a dick?
Among these crosscurrents, my thesis is simple: The question of whether America is in decline cannot be answered yes or no. There is no yes or no. Both answers are wrong, because the assumption that somehow there exists some predetermined inevitable trajectory, the result of uncontrollable external forces, is wrong. Nothing is inevitable. Nothing is written. For America today, decline is not a condition. Decline is a choice. Two decades into the unipolar world that came about with the fall of the Soviet Union, America is in the position of deciding whether to abdicate or retain its dominance. Decline–or continued ascendancy–is in our hands.
If this were Sports! Commentary, Krauthammer here could be roughly translated as saying You Need to Give 110% and Put Some Points on the Board, and so forth. Or, this is the rhetoric of an International Conference of Super-Villains, with a plenary session by, oh, who knows, some creepy-ass bald dude in a stupid jumpsuit with tinfoil epaulets, petting a cat, giggling “bwah-ha-ha soon we will CONTROL THE WORLD!” Which is I suppose what we’ll be seeing Glenn Beck doing all next week.
Krauthammer sees the world in preposterous pulp comic-book terms. Why does the United States need to be “dominant”? And why does a lack of “dominance” necessarily mean “decline”? Why does the world even need a hegemon, anyhow? Is Oasis better than Blur? Could God roll a joint so tight, even He couldn’t smoke it? Who played the Cisco Kid? Why is Paula Abdul famous? Who wrote the Book of Love? If you could trap time in a bottle, what’s the one thing you’d like to do?
But even on his own terms and pretending his premises aren’t silly, Krauthammer achieves fail:
The current liberal ascendancy in the United States–controlling the executive and both houses of Congress, dominating the media and elite culture–has set us on a course for decline. And this is true for both foreign and domestic policies. Indeed, they work synergistically to ensure that outcome.
But the liberal internationalism of today is different. It is not center-left, but left-liberal. And the new left-liberal internationalism goes far beyond its earlier Clintonian incarnation in its distrust of and distaste for American dominance. For what might be called the New Liberalism, the renunciation of power is rooted not in the fear that we are essentially good but subject to the corruptions of power–the old Clintonian view–but rooted in the conviction that America is so intrinsically flawed, so inherently and congenitally sinful that it cannot be trusted with, and does not merit, the possession of overarching world power.
For the New Liberalism, it is not just that power corrupts. It is that America itself is corrupt–in the sense of being deeply flawed, and with the history to prove it. An imperfect union, the theme of Obama’s famous Philadelphia race speech, has been carried to and amplified in his every major foreign-policy address, particularly those delivered on foreign soil. (Not surprisingly, since it earns greater applause over there.)
And because we remain so imperfect a nation, we are in no position to dictate our professed values to others around the world. Demonstrators are shot in the streets of Tehran seeking nothing but freedom, but our president holds his tongue because, he says openly, of our own alleged transgressions towards Iran (presumably involvement in the 1953 coup). Our shortcomings are so grave, and our offenses both domestic and international so serious, that we lack the moral ground on which to justify hegemony.
Is “America” corrupt? Only to the degree that the people in charge of its policies are. And the people who ran America for eight years were so sublimely corrupt they thought they were, well, qualified to run the world, when they were in truth delusional incompetents. If you start a war based on hooey, and then botch it, this, you know, has dire consequences for whether or not people think you’re Morally Serious and Fit for Global Command.
If Krauthammer is bothered about how pretty much everyone on the planet thinks the people who think as he does are utterly unfit to rule the world, well, he and his pals had their chance to prove their thesis, and they whizzed it pretty spectacularly.
The “problem” with America is, precisely, Charles Krauthammer, or, even worse, the notion that he and his are not frightening clowns.
Dick.

Dr. Freud, call your office.
There are more dicks! You cannot stop at the shriveled sourkraut.
Feeling around, I am afraid you are correct..
total dick
Krauthammer is one of the biggest wingnuts in a wingnut circus. Facts and reality have left the Republicans and the so-called conservatives long ago.
Krauthammer isn’t just a dick, he’s an unoriginal one. I think if I have to read this “liberals think America is intrinsically flawed” crap one more time (what is it except a variation on “liberals hate America,” anyway?) that I shall certainly throw a steel-toed boot at the perpetator.
Speaking on behalf of the dicks of the world, we don’t want this asshat. He ain’t one of ours. No way, no how, no siree!
The scary part is that this lunatic is an actual psychiatrist. I think it is very clearly a case of physician heal yourself.
We’re # 37! [health care]
We can call him a cocksucker if you prefer.
How about, we think that the world is essentially flawed and the Krauthammer is on big flaw that needs to be “fixed?”
This is an important point, which I’ll be exploring more going forward.
As long as you keep him away from mine. God knows what you could catch. Rabies comes to mind and mad cow disease.
What you said. Except I’ll have to throw a leather sneaker, I guess.
I am so tired of hearing this. It’s part of the “nobody has the right to govern except Republicans” mantra that’s behind so much of the current craziness, and I.am.sick.of.it.
If conservatives are throwing around references to “synergy” they must have made it to the 1990s. Look out people, they’re catching up. Soon they’ll figure out how to connect their 28K modems and then there will be no stopping them.
Actual picture of Krauthammer psychoanalyzing Sarah Palin.
A neocon shrink. Wonderful. Must be a Freudian, then…sometimes an ICBM is just an ICBM, but then again, there’s Krauthammer’s tiny penis.
Throw one for me too, it’s getting very old.
Precisely how many Dicks do you claim as your own?
I think we can all surmise the reason why he is not practicing medicine.
Enough to get the job done. 8-)
Congratulations, mine has never been able to hold a job.
In all honesty, mine is sort of retired at present.
How disappointing. Heretofore you’ve been the model of civil dicourse.
some have a love hate relationship with theirs
Good math.
From the new Frank Rich column:
It is what we value and have come to expect. That and saying “fuck” a lot.
Pla ce change.
“…left-liberal internationalism…” – Well, isn’t that just a pretty crumb of Fakin’ Bacon on top of the word salad.
All this ‘dominance’ talk…One might speculate that Charles has a passing familiarity with the kiss of the whip.
;>)
Mine still writes good, have to wait for snow, however.
Ce corrected.
Well, they will get you in trouble faster than just about anything except tequila and handguns.
when they are added to that mix…. well i used to call that job security
Sounds like standard operating procedure to me. See also: Iraq.
That’s a good ‘un.
OMG!!! That is the funniest, Suzanne! Must see.
Very word salad…
LOL!
I see the party’s already dirty.
Yep, I’ve mentioned the installment of Washington Week awhile back in which they ran clips of Pelosi saying insurers ration health care and some Republican talking about death panels, then discussed them as if they were equally valid sides to the debate. Gosh darn that liberal media bias.
What is so interesting and disturbing about rightwing FUs like Krauthammer is that there is a complete absence of self-awareness. Conservatives had their chance to enact their theories and the result was utter and absolute disaster across the board on every front. So what is Krauthammer’s conclusion? Beware of liberals.
It is people like Krauthammer that make our era the Age of Stupid. Nor is Krauthammer some whacko wailing away at the darkness. He is one of many similar voices that represent our ruling elites, both Democratic and Republican. He and his form the trajectory of our failure. But being the gormless bobblehead that he is, he can’t see that he is the problem that he fears.
Aw Fuck. Perhaps I shouldn’t have misspelled discourse.
dang.. forgot my manners.. hey thers… excellent post, as usual. thank you
Fixed it for you.
As a psychiatrist, you’d think he’d recognize projection when he does it.
To be fair, except for an occasional hiccup, most of human history has been one continuous Age of Stupid.
Well done.
As a psychiatrist, you would expect him to sign involuntary committal papers, but that ain’t happening either.
He is a vampire psychiatrist… no reflection.
Did you ever stop to consider how lucky the U.S. is to have had its constitution written during the Englightenment?
You clever.
I like how Krauthammer refers so offhandedly to the ‘1953 event’ – “Of course, dear boy, a bit of CIA destabilization to safeguard the oil flow, harmless trifle really…”
;>)
That is truly hilarious. thanks.
Conservatives seem pretty blind to projection. Even psychiatrists, it seems.
The current liberal ascendancy in the United States–controlling the executive and both houses of Congress, dominating the media and elite culture–has set us on a course for decline
America is never stronger than when we Lefties win the fight for everyone or has Charles forgotten WW2?
We won that fight before WW2 and when we lost that fight America fell backwards after the war it did take some time though.
Also say hi to Katymine on Loohoos threads Late nighters she’s sick!
there is none so blind as he who will not see
Krauthammer is an angry, mentally-ill man who’s not particularly gifted, compared to someone like Fareed Zakaria who can really make conservative ideology sound reasonable. Why he has a column I’ll never know.
Actually, Krauthammer has many things in common with a vampire. First he bites and then he sucks.
IIRC, the Brits would have been better off if they’d taken the Iranian deal, which was something like 50%. With the U.S. running interference, the U.S. ended up with the lion’s share and the Brits with 25%, or numbers to that effect.
I’m certain it gave great comfort to many Africans and Native Americans.
We’d have been luckier if the Age of Enlightenment had lasted a bit longer.
Gee, the do projection so well and so often, you’d think they took lessons.
Yep and yep.
And that worked out so well for us in the long term, now didn’t it?
Ok I got to leave for awhile but that thought deserves expanding upon bye eCHAN I now I say you should write more Diaries and it is a pain I know but… with thoughts like that your asking for it.
Never really was all that deep socially. Remember that they were still burning witches in Scotland in 1776.
It was a tragic error in translation, Mosaddeq actually asked the U.S. for a Coupe DeVille.
See, now, this is the real reason why liberals find fault with the U.S.: because conservatives fuck up everything they do.
Nag, nag, nag. *g*
Now that is the most succinct summary so far. Brilliant.
We aim to please, and please to aim.
The thing about our current times is the unremitting nature of the stupidity. It is like our government and our society have been hollowed out. There is no core. We have Republicans who are crazy and Democrats who are only a little less crazy. Neither can fix even simple problems let alone the complicated ones we face. But it is what I saw and was really driven home to me when I was writing my Bush scandals list. It wasn’t just that Bush made bad decisions. Every decision he made was bad, and yet even that didn’t get to the heart of the matter. It was that every decision he made was the absolute worst one and with the most catastrophic consequences. And the final twist was that he persisted in them. I look at Obama and the Democrats. I see a few changes in rhetoric, a few modifications around the edges but in general the very same approach and policies, results and costs.
And, as usual, the conservatives confuse themselves with America.
That’s the trouble with libruls, too much a-please-ment.
Just think, they have many many hours of wingnut radio and TV to reinforce these “lessons,” kind of like those mandatory Maoist meetings.
The actual goal of eugenics was to breed shallow-minded consumers. Trouble is, it only works as long as the consumers have jobs.
Time for me to call it a night. Peace out, y’all!
Actually, Krauthammer has many things in common with a vampire. First he
bitesgums and then he sucksI agree with the “he sucks” part…
G’nite EDP.
Think I will toddle off. Take care all.
*waving g’nite to all the leaving sleepyheads*
Never thought about the history of stupid times. Good lordy.
G’nite.
I’m a sucker for peer pressure, splendid evening to all.
Yes, they certainly do. They have a lock on teh right and teh good and teh incompetent.
Everyone’s being so smart tonight. That’s a fabulous analogy. It’s the authoritarian thingy.
It’s just a matter of perspective. The accumulated intellectual achievements of humans are at least as impressive (probably more) than our collective stupidity, albeit less pervasive.
Arglebargle! Sorry, got redirected by Life.
Crashing tho. Niters mes amis.
Bonne nuit.
g’nite thers — thanks again
Dangit, I just missed Thers on a Thersday, eh…? Aloha Ya’ll from the mtn…! ;-)
hey ct – how’s the mt tonight?
Another gorgeous sunset to behold… The Sun looked like it was setting into a lake of clouds with some clouds behind the sun… Magnifico…!
Funny, I hate a lot of things about America, including Krauthammer, which sounds like an awesome band name.
In addition, does anyone else love the new sign-in process on Firedoglake? No more going back to the front page for me when I sign in on a thread! Yay!
dude!
did you see any kind of explosion from the moon-bombing the other day? I didn’t.
Any word on the data gathered?
If you don’t sign out, you don’t have to sign in. At least that’s the way it works on my computer.
the tech crew did a great job during last nights update. they are working on a few hiccups but only a few.
In addition to getting a Nobel Prize, Obama shot the moon. How much good luck can one man garner?
after the update, the lake required me to sign back in even though i had not signed out — tech guy shrugged and went back to cursing in some weird code thang when i asked about it.
NASA’s still analyzing the data and expects to release ’some’ data in a week… I was kicked off the mtn 2 1/2 hrs prior to the implosion so I was denied the opportunity along with the rest of ya’ll… Keck was telling me earlier today that Keck I caught both plumes from the moon shot…!
sux dood
I was caught up in last nite’s outage… I do like the new sign in procedure…!
Oh, so that explains it. I also had to sign in again today, but it wasn’t the first time I logged on.
Back in the dark ages, in the days when there were remote terminals to a CPU, printing at 10 cps, you could contact the computer operator by typing ?SPO message. If you typed just ? and a carriage return, the computer typed back: I am the genie of the disc. What is your command? I’ve greatly missed the genie of the disc since computers upgraded.
Apparently, Obama is gonna end DADT…
Anybody holding their breath…?
Oh, so that explains it. I also had to sign in again today,
that’s good to know.
I was taking it personally.
Awesome band name indeed!
I havent seen any newness about FDL, but now that articles stay in their own playground (FDL, Emptywheel, Attackerman, etc.), you need to check into the home site occasionally.
Heh. You must be a youngun. Ever since I passed the age of 50, I’ve decided that NOTHING is personal. A great relief, to be sure.
Anybody holding their breath…?
ok – sucking in a great big breath.
now, if I can just hold it for a couple of years…..
teddy has a post up immediately downstairs about that
I’m having to login too, but I used to be able to stay logged-on. Macs.
the tech crew did some sorta big update/upgrade thingie last night. a lot of the changes are behind the scenes and make life easier for those working backstage.
Ever since I passed the age of 50, I’ve decided that NOTHING is personal.
yes, but you are probably not a narcissistic egomaniac with a massive inferiority complex.
Something tells me I said a bit too much there.
i only had to relog in once (and that was immediately after we came back up). i’ve not had to since — and i’ve had my computer off in the mean time.
Wow, another good post by Teddy…! Heh, the “but, not when’s” about sum’s it up…! ;-)
shorter jayt: i am a lawyer
Hands over ears, eyes shut, lalalalala. Too much information. *g*
Ditto, except that I was required to login about the fifth time I turned my computer on today, not the first time.
hmmmm… they did say there were some hiccups.. perhaps that is one they were talking about
We’ll see. Things will be worked out.
You don’t seriously shut down your computer 5 times a day, do you?
Where is the genie of the disc when we need her?
Yep. Restart when I’m losing on freecell.
If not, I’m sure Suz will don the Nomex and Kevlar suit again…! ;-)
You have waaay too much time on your hands, Ma’am…! ;-)
the cold is on its way… i’m dressing in layers again
What’s freecell?
*ding*
in the last two weeks, I’ve lost two outta three trials. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. How it’s supposed to work is that I stop talking – the judge says “Not Guilty”, and we all go home.
The judges seem to be blowing their lines.
Seriously, I had two trials with 2 counts each, and one trial with only 1 count. Somehow I manged to win 3 out of 5 counts, and still lose two out of 3 trials.
I need an accountant, or a shrink, or a cat to kick.
maybe some music….
It’s triple tasking. Do it with TV on & reading posts. If necessary, will mute TV during commercial while reading interesting post.
how about a classic cartoon
okey-doke.
A solitare game that it’s theoretically possible to win every time. However, if you restart your computer while the game is in session, it doesn’t log it as a loss. So it’s a way for weak egos to boost their winning streak, which the game keeps track of.
Heh, let me reiterate…! 8-)
You have to try Snood.
LLN’s on tap…
Interesting. I’ve only been a client of lawyers, not on the other side of the relationship, so I appreciate your telling the lawyer’s POV. I have been told that white shoe lawyers in NYC (had one for awhile in my will contest until I fired him) attempt never to go to trial, pressure clients into settlements so that they won’t have any “losses” on their resume. Any comments?
What is snood?
Hmmmmm. News to me, thanks.
I have been told that white shoe lawyers in NYC (had one for awhile in my will contest until I fired him) attempt never to go to trial, pressure clients into settlements so that they won’t have any “losses” on their resume. Any comments?
I know a ton of guys who make their living by making a ton of noise at pre-trials. Impresses the client, ya know. I know several guys who’ve been at this for years, and have *never* taken one to a jury. I know one hell of a lot more who have never won in front of a jury. Me, I never say a word at pre-trials, other than to confirm dates. (A calculated risk, because I’ve been known to pass up pre-trial motions which *might* have gone somewhere, in favor of keeping my mouth shut).
My trial motto is “Never let ‘em see you coming.”
I don’t pressure anybody into anything – it’s not my job. The client is the boss. If he/she wants a trial, after being presented with all of the alternatives and possible ramifications, I have no choice – we go to trial (not all trials are juries – many are bench trials, as were all three I mentioned above).
There is some small, practical, consolation in going to, even if losing, a trial. Every prosecutor in the building knows that I won’t roll over – so even if I’ve got a dead loser on my hands – when I walk in the door, plea offers get hastily re-written. That counts for something, I guess.
otoh, I *really, really* don’t lose well – even though I’m stuck with existing facts – I cannot stand to fucking lose. Something about going up against the bigger budget, w/assistants, paralegals and professionally prepared exhibits, opponent against just me makes it seem a moral imperative that I kick their ass. And, not to jinx anything, I do pretty well.
P.S. I wonder how many psychoses I’ve exhibited in one comment?
Yes, but then you have to live with the crushing guilt of having cheated on your FreeCell statistics.
There are unwinnable FreeCell hands, all right. If you want to see one, enter -1 or -2 as your game number.
we are a nation of imperialists
we dont know that we are but we are
the size of our military says it all
we are the largest seller of war goods in the world
the hundreds of military bases around the world says more
our two wars for profits says more about our imperialism
the millions we killed in vietnam were war crimes
the illegal invasion of iraq was and is a war crime
many americans are out and out war mongers
mc war wanted to bomb every vietnamese man woman and child to win that illegal war and he almost became president
few will understand my words
when I protest the wars few join in all too busy on cell phones or shopping or working two or three jobs
yes americans salute your flag and sing the song with pride as we bomb and kill and conduct illegal invasions for oil and war profits
The problem with Krauthammer’s thesis is that he can cite no factual evidence to back it up. His thesis that liberalism is the death of America is just plain bullshit. Liberalism is what America was founded upon. The founding fathers were liberal. In fact, every significant event that advanced the cause of civil liberties in this country had a liberal solution. I cannot think of a single significant contribution that conservatism has made to the betterment of our nation. Not one.
So Krauthammer issues forth with his arrogantly dripping condescension toward liberalism. Fuck him and anyone that looks like him. He has a remarkable record at being consistently wrong in his columns. His assessments and predictions regarding our glorious war in Iraq have been 100% wrong. Why does anybody pay this dickhead hack to write anything?
Thers,
You are being much too kind.
(If it were not for the radically conservative, racist dicks (now I am being too kind) who (thanks to the Reaganization of the FCC nearly 30 years ago) rapidly monopolized big chunks of the mass media, people like Krauthammer wouldn’t have a spot to hiss in.)
By definition, democracy is liberal. If it’s not liberal, it’s not a democracy.
