The RNC reacts to the Nobel news. . . predictably:
"The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action."
The DNC responds:
"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists – the Taliban and Hamas this morning – in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO. "Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize – an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride – unless of course you are the Republican Party.
"The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim," Woodhouse said.
And yes, the Taliban and Hamas indeed condemned the award earlier today.

the state department spokesman got it right: It is a good day when people are throwing accolades at an American president, instead of shoes.
BHO stole Sarah Palin’s Nobel Peace Prize … pass it on !
Watertiger !
Heh. That’s a great line.
Citizen Petrocelli:
ROFLMAO
Said it before and I’ll say it again: Groucho Marx sang the Post-Obama Election theme song of the Republicans a long time ago. This is all they’ve got and they will go down with the ship singing the song.

I serve to live … *g*
wow, that is incredible stuff, it feels as if I am reading one of my own posts
the dnc is learning by god, they are learning!
“Just say no!” to anything BHO does anything… smells like a typical repuke response to me…
I’d go further than that. President Obama got the Nobel Peace Price solely because of shrub. We owe this honor to our country solely because of what happened with Obama’s predecessor. Obama’s message of a return of America to multi-lateralism, peace-building, and the promotion of democratic values globally has already made a profound impact globally (and it actually has) only because it follows eight years of militaristic millenialist despotism, which, in turn, justified and enabled the thuggish actions of every other tin pot despot out there. If you had told me in 2000 that we were about to cross the Rubicon, into darkness, I would not have believed you, but that’s exactly where we went.
America’s return to the basic norms of international conduct, even if that return hasn’t been as complete or as unconditional as we progressives would have liked, has had a huge impact around the world, from China and Russia to the Middle East to Africa… and all because Obama’s simply got us to the first rung of ladder back out of the septic tank we spent 8 years wallowing around in. And it’ll be a long, hard climb back into the light.
i’ll bet pickles tried to hide the news from georgie but he found out he didn’t get one – again. wonder who got more blotto – him or her…
Well, even the wingnuts know it’s true. All you have to do to get a peace prize today is to not be that guy, George W. Bush.
Iknow I felt imminently more peaceful the day he left office. Now I know an international committee that feels teh same way.
Please excuse this off-topic comment, but I just received an email from Congressman Grayson stating his support for real health care reform and asking Americans to sign his petition to Senator Harry Reid.
Click here to see the email, which I’ve posted at FDL, and sign the petition.
Hi Suz! Finally learned how to use the dairy feature ;>)
(slaps head) how could I forget? Bush wants us to remember he was all about peace. I just plum forgot.
Uhhh… Like this?
My summary of today’s discussion in the form of a question:
Obama’s Peace Prize: Premature, or Hijacked Elation?
Ducking and running…
hey Suz you hear from MaryMcc? She was having pc issues and had asked for your email….
i haven’t — i’ll dash her off an email… thanks nahant
here we go.. wingnuts speak:
“Now, the Norwegians have weighed in to support Barack Obama in his bid to reshape America so it looks more like, well, Norway, or at least like Europe. European socialism cannot succeed without conquering the United States…. He obviously doesn’t deserve the award for economics or, given his healthcare ideas, for medicine. But the Peace Prize expresses Europe’s longing: to take back the nation its overly ambitious and uppity children founded.” – Dick Morris, Newsmax
http://www.newsmax.com/morris/…..70571.html
(warning, this link leads directly to Newsmax, so make sure young children and the emotionally sensitive are kept well over from your PC screen)
I knew it … the Nords have taken over America ! Man the Battle stations …
I wish I could find the time to troll a few Rethug sites and add this tidbit.
Excellent !
Petro!
What is the word on the prize in Toronto?
Easily forgotten now, but there was a fellow wingnut in the Norwegian legislature who nominated Bush and Blair for the NPP for their “work” in Iraq.
Politicized? Sure it is. But not that politicized.
One thing missed in all this from the right-wing is that the Nobel Peace Prize doesn’t need to be awarded each year. Unlike the other prizes, it’s an Opt-In kind of deal. That makes Obama’s award a double affirmation: yes, let’s give one and let’s give it to HIM.
A tangible recognition of the HUGE sigh of relief that Bush/Cheney left offiec without blowing up the whole fucking world.
I can see a case for a Reagan/Gorby Peace Prize for working to end the Cold War. It would not be worst Nobel Peace Prize. But wingnuts are actually complaining that Cheney and Bush did not get a prize for invading Iraq? What? They are crazy.
Main themes I see today from wingnuts and Village:
1) It is Obama’s fault some one gave him an award
2) It hurts Obama
2) It proves that Obama is a failure and the US is an object of ridicule
3) It is very hard and irrefutable evidence of a world-wide conspiracy of humanity-hating progressives to tie down the US, emasculate it, and turn it into a pitiful helpless giant.
I wasn’t sure about the wisdom of this choice when I first heard about it, but it may be worth it for the wingnut reaction alone. Looks like they will charge even further into the crazy.
Looks like Obama will handle this perfectly: it is an aspirational prize, and he will accept in behalf of a fairly reasonable vision of world peace and progress, and give a speech that furthers those ends.
Sounds good to me. That will be plus, regardless of whether Obama can follow through in his policy choices in the first term. And it will be very nice if it causes wingnuts and corporate media to further humiliate and disgrace themselves in public.
And, of course, little Dicky Morris knows him some Nobel laureate material when he sees it, right? It is to laugh.
do what
I can…
Sure looks like the Nobel Peace Prize is driving the wingnuts crazy. They are not even over that Gore and the climate scientists get it. I like that too. Dig deeper, boys, dig deeper.
left ya a comment on it ktown
Man, you got that right. I went over there when the bozo publisher from Rome GA wrote a piece on Obama being ousted by a military coup. There are some real uberreichwingnutjobs over there.
Republicans would do well to remember 2 words when they whine about the Nobel Peace prize, Bush Doctrine… Pre-Emptive War does not make for Peace….
It’s funny to watch the republics melt down this way. I’m glad the DNC finally grew a pair…
Like many World citizens, we lurves BHO. His vision is 180 Degrees of Bush/Cheney/NeoCons and his success domestically will depend on how active American citizens are, in driving policy back to Democratic values.
As far as we can see, Obama deserves this award because he has turned the World away from another Cold War, is shifting power away from the M.I.C. and back to the citizenry and rewritten rules to prevent another Banking catastrophe from occurring. Not that the current crisis is over by any means.
The most important thing that Obama’s policies, wrt ME peace, Nuclear disarmament, etc. is this: Thanks to Bush and the NeoCon cabal, Extremists and Fundies everywhere seized power away from the moderates. By taking a moderate stance, Obama has created a shift in the World body politik by shifting power away from extremists and back to moderates.
The DNC has definitely found its punch!
They have also started a series called “Faces of the GOP.” See the story at CNN’s political ticker HERE.
My comment at CNN to the story was cut by the moderators:
I’ve had that same thought about alot of things, especially about bringing guns to an event POTUS will be attending.
You’re making me think of the Doomsday clock -
Unfreakinbelievable Mark Halperin on the Ed show said that it was a bad thing that Obama won the Nobel because it is devisive here in America. The rethugs are attacking Obama over it!
You’re not surprised by this, are you ? I mean the attacks on Obama by the Right and Left …
So was Halperin napping for the last nine and a half months while the Rethugs attacked everything Obama did, everything Obama didn’t do, and a few things they made up themselves? This isn’t divisive. The Republican Party is divisive.
yep. And he’s loved around the world for it. I posted on an earlier thread that, in China, primary schoolchildren are learning English by reciting his speeches, poets are penning triumphalist missives to him, and he’s outpolling (in the low eighties/high seventies) by a margin of over 20 points any of their own leaders in a country where answering the pollster could conceivably get you in hot water with the authorities. Regardless of what (little) he’s actually done, through his volition, a guy that has that kind of reception in a somewhat hostile dictatorship probably deserves a Nobel….
Thanks for that perspective. It’s so easy to mired in the inside views and not stop to think how we are viewed outside the country.
I am not at all surprised at the attacks from the right but the attacks from the left are. Some of them represent a level of irrationality that that would make a rethug proud.
I’m having fun seeing all the GOP and Villager heads go ASPLODY all over the place. *snickers* This just pushed them another step into the world of crazy.
hey Nahant
John Bolton: “I was nominated three years ago and I’m still waiting for the call”.. complaining that the prize should’ve gone to a more deserving guy. That’s a real quote, not snark.
http://corner.nationalreview.c…..0NzI4NzA=#
(warning: link to today’s NRO interview of Nobel Pretender John Bolton)
Nobody has the heart to tell Walrusman that he was a prank nominee…
hey hows things down south?
I think what rankles them even more is that this came completely out of left field. I don’t think anyone was expecting him to get it! I’d been hearing about the various awards but not that he had been one of the nominees for the NPP.
He’s definitely taken the first steps to mending all those fences chopped down by the Shrub regime. It’s going to take a long time to even get the structure up to par again. International and domestically.
It is that alternate universe thingee. Obama shouldn’t have gotten the Nobel because the mainstream rethug centernuts let alone wingnuts would find it offensive.
Dear John,
Don’t hold your breath.
signed,
The Rest of the World
bolton is just mad he bought his nomination and didn’t even get a tshirt in return
So, in essence, the Nobel committee should have taken into account the fact that the American right wing is a bunch of whiny-ass titty babies. Gotcha.
World Domination Boomerangerdammerung
Today’s announcement from Stockholm of Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize was Cheney/Bush’s 2005 Nobel War Prize.
Harold Pinter delivered Bush’s speech for him because he was too busy cutting brush on his ranch and bombing Iraq back into the Stone Age to steal their oil.
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_pr…..cture.html
Alias !
tee hee hee … ’tis wonderful to behold !
Doing well, thanks Nahant — sorry tomorrow’s event was cancelled. How’s everything up north?
Hiya Suz
LOL !!!
Actually, they DID take that into account!
I think the prize was actually for Obama and US for electing him.
The DNC is always good for a laugh. So, the Taliban and Hamas criticize the award as does the RNC, ergo “The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists.”
You seem to be forgetting that the terrorists were all in favor Obama’s candidacy: does that mean the DNC threw in with the terrorists or is it just another case of leftie double standards?
TYpical rethug delusion! Go back through the portal to your alternate universe idiot.
I still believe the award should have gone to someone more deserving (like, I don’t know, the Dalai Lama?), but I’m happy to see the DNC finally located its balls.
Maybe Bush and Cheney will get a prize too, in the Hague.
The Dalai Lama has already won the Nobel, in 1989. Did he do something to deserve winning another one ?
I mean … apart from keeping Richard Gere from making movies … *g*
Wow, they came right out and used the word “uppity”? That’s a bold move. And by bold I mean “stupid.”
They live in a fact-free Universe, poor things … see my @32, trolls. The Crazies wanted McCrazy and Sarah Palinsane to win … Obama’s victory signalled end of times for them and their ideology.
That’s where their prize is waiting for them indeed! Does anyone know if there are countries where Bush and co can’t go because they’d be arrested for war crimes?
No one could be more deserving…
I kinda wish Dicky Morris is right and that the Nordics really are about to take us over.. then we’d actually get a healthcare system.
Republicans, Taliban, and Hamas all agree BHO doesn’t deserve this award, go figure.
That was just an example because I have no idea who the other nominees were, but when asked who has done more to advance peace over the last year between he and Obama, I’d have to pick the Dalai Lama. Even though anything that raises Orly Yarly’s blood pressure is automatically awesome.
Vermont?
We’ll amicably disagree then … Obama has done a he** of a lot to further World Peace and Leaders around the World are in awe of him. They also know that he has raised the bar for all of them, from Europe to Africa.
Don’t have to go very far.
warmongers dislike the peace prize ;-P
According to Orwell, it’s all a matter of equivalencies.
War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.
There is a clip of the announcement in Oslo that the corporate media have been running. It goes something like this:
Committee Chair: ….Barack Obama
Audience: Oooooooooooooh! (not yay or boo, but sheer dumbstruck awe-filled astonishment at something that came out of nowhere)
The current Dalai Lama already received the prize in 1989. Can you get it twice?
…heard Rush and Hannity cast the tie votes.
wow…a somewhat gracious and only semi-barbed statement from the president of the National Assoc of Evangelicals: http://blog.christianitytoday……ce_pr.html
and a very gracious statement from fundie megapastor Joel Hunter.
Not sure that Eric Erickson doesn’t get the prize, but then maybe it is Michael Steele, or maybe …….
Holy crap, did the DNC find its balls or something? That’s one stunning retort up there!
And I was thinking Democrats were weaklings! Well!
Obama kept Bush and Cheney from getting their prize, a chance to rattle their tin cups on the bars of their cells.
If the wingnuts want their ilk to win a prize, let them create it and pay for it like they have with the Heritage Foundation, and all the other wingnut “think tanks”. Maybe they ought to create a Jonah Goldberg “anti-liberal fascist war prize” and see if they have any takers.
republicans are stuck in the same old grove of “what has obama ever done”..i love to say, “well, he was elected president of the U.S., and he recently won the nobel peace prize”..that usually is enough to induce apoplectic, spittle spraying gibberish for a few minutes. remember to back up a few steps.
By God, Teddy,
I second their relief. I was holding my breath from November ’til the end of January hoping that Dick and Dubya would actually step down. First I expected they’d find the threat level so high that elections would need to be postponed. Then they could have just invoked martial law, claiming that the president elect was obviously not an American citizen, or worse yet: Clearly a liberal and maybe even one with progressive tendencies. That would have done for him where I live.
Hi FDLers! And hello again Suzanne, Teddy, iremember54, Knoxville!
Apropos of tonight’s topic.. I just stumbled on the perfect Valentine for Rove, Cheney, Coulter, Limbaugh, Beck.. ( how do I loathe thee? may I count the ways?)
A new video game based on Dante’s Inferno. Yeah. Maybe they can rush production in time for the holidays?
http://bit.ly/InfernoVideoGame
“Players will assume the role of Dante as he fights through Alighieri’s nine circles of hell — limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.
“Inferno” will be released in Europe and North America in February of next year, according to EA.
Game software will be tailored for play on Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 consoles along with PlayStation PSP handheld devices.”
Me: “You seem to be forgetting that the terrorists were all in favor Obama’s candidacy”
Bozo #1: “TYpical rethug delusion! Go back through the portal to your alternate universe idiot.”
Bozo #2: “They live in a fact-free Universe, poor things”
I’m always amazed when ignorant people think they know it all. Ahmed Yousef of Hamas said on WABC that the group supports Obama. “We like Mr. Obama. We hope he will (win) the election…” Obama even commented on it: interview
You two are the ones off in another universe, LOL
As someone said here yesterday:
[I apologize for not remembering who said it.]
I don’t mean to detract from the honor of Obama’s winning, but I thought the quote was enjoyable.
You’ve got to be kidding. What late night show host had their team of writers come up with the incredibly funny idea that these two war criminals deserved the Nobel Peace Prize? Fact is often stranger (and more funny) than fiction. Come on guys, it’s way too early for April Fools.
